Patterico's Pontifications

Karl expands his global media empire

HotAir is launching a new “Green Room,” where about a dozen people will be blogging. I am one of them.  I would not have accepted the invitation without Patterico’s blessing, and he was as gracious about it, as he has always been with me. AFAIK, I will still be commenting here, and posting (or cross-posting) here with some frequency.

One of the reasons I have blogged at all is the quality of commenters I have found here and during my stint at Protein Wisdom.  I accepted the invite from HotAir for the opportunity to write for a different audience. “If the mountain will not come to you…” and all that.  But I would not have received the invitation in the first instance if not for folks like Patterico and y’all, so I thank you like a Munchkin thanks Dorothy for dropping a house on the Wicked Witch of the East.

  4. Just promise not to forget the little people you ruthlessly trampled on your way to the top.

  5. Damn.

    Anybody seen my house?

It was right around here someplace until that gust of wind from Karl…

    ;)

  7. I was kidding, Karl. Congrats on the new gig.

  8. Congrats, racist. I hope you cross post your stuff here.

    Comment by JD — 4/13/2009 @ 5:59 pm

  9. Yeah, it wasn’t clear until today, but it appears there’s no problem with cross-posting — so I’ll probably do that most of the time. Should be an interesting comapre-and-contrast exercise in comments.

  10. SPQR,

I took your comment in the spirit intended.

    Dmac,

    Do I know you? ;-)

  13. Damn! Karl! Long time, no read. And now you’re headed for the Big Time. Couldn’t happen to a more qualified guy. You go, girl.

  14. carlitos,

I was probably too oblique in the original post, but that’s what I meant by a different audience.

    Comment by Karl — 4/13/2009 @ 6:17 pm

  15. Karl – Thanks for cross posting. I am sure there are some great, smart, and witty folks over there, I just have not met them, nor do I desire to seek them out ;-)

  16. I saw it over at Hot Air earlier and was going to give you a hard time about it. I was going to tell you not to forget the little people, but then you had to go and make a FREAKING MUNCHKIN reference in your post.

    What’s up with that?

Congratulations. I’m sure that waitress from the steak joint will start returning your calls now! Heh!

    The BIG TIME, BAYBEE!!!!!

  17. Always with the midget/munchkin/wee-peole references …

    Comment by JD — 4/13/2009 @ 6:41 pm

  18. Karl, no offense, but this seems like a promotion from The Show to AAA. Seriously. I’ve been linked by Patrick and linked from Hot Air, and I assure you, there are more deliberative readers here than there are over there. At Hot Air, barely anyone clicks on the links provided to read the source material for themselves, preferring instead to take Ed Morrissey’s word about whatever as gospel. So I won’t accuse you of selling out, because I don’t think you are . . . but I think the pernicious logic of comment and click counts might have you mistaking where the grass is greener. (Unless, of course, they’re paying you, in which case more power to you.)

    Comment by SEK — 4/13/2009 @ 6:44 pm

  19. SEK – It’s the babes, I’m telling you. They dig a Hot Air blogger. It’s not about the coin for Karl, it’s all about the BOO-TAY!!!!

    Comment by daleyrocks — 4/13/2009 @ 6:54 pm

  20. The Green Room gig allows cross-posting, and I think I have convinced Karl to cross-post here so that his contributions will be as frequent as ever. This will allow him to share his excellent posts with two audiences, and garner feedback from two very different sets of commenters.

However, as always, it’s his choice how to handle matters, and he may change his mind. All I can do is be grateful for his contributions wherever they appear.

    Comment by Patterico — 4/13/2009 @ 7:00 pm

  21. SEK,

Pls refer to #9 and #14.

    Patterico,

    Thanks, as always.

Which, as a serial x-poster myself, I certainly appreciate the usefulness of. But I x-post between a blog for professional historians and one for English professors, so I’m getting different perspectives from equally intelligent groups. The difference between here and Hot Air, well . . .

    Comment by SEK — 4/13/2009 @ 7:10 pm

  23. SEK, I think daleyrocks is right…its gotta be the babes…

  24. There are comments at HotAir? ;)

    Comment by nk — 4/13/2009 @ 7:48 pm

  25. SEK,

It’s not all about what feedback I can get from commenters. I’m sure you can imagine things that you might want to say to the HotAir audience that you would feel no need to say to the Patterico audience.

    Comment by Karl — 4/13/2009 @ 7:53 pm

  26. It’s not all about what feedback I can get from commenters. I’m sure you can imagine things that you might want to say to the HotAir audience that you would feel no need to say to the Patterico audience.

Absolutely. Teach them about research, evidence, nuance and that terrible puns on Obama’s name ain’t identical to arguments. You have your work cut out for you.

    It’s gotta be the babes . . .

There’s no way to respond to this without offending everyone who does blogs or everyone who doesn’t, so I’m just going to shut my trap now. But really, if Karl were in it for anything other than love, he would’ve put his energies into writing winning online personals. I mean, he’s got chops enough to win hearts and minds with words . . .

  27. Jeef G is sure full of butthurt over this, though…

  29. Karl,
I can’t match the wit of the other commenters, so I’ll just say . . .
    Congratulations!

    Scott,
Nice allusion to Godl . . . er, Voldemort.

  30. Apropos of nothing, here is what I get when I click on the link to “The Thriller that Liberals won’t read” blog ad to the right of the screen:

    Looking for something?
We’re sorry. The Web address you entered is not a functioning page on our site

    Comment by carlitos — 4/13/2009 @ 8:33 pm

  31. Yeah, you can click “Buy it now” for a good link, but I should report the bad links.

    Comment by Patterico — 4/13/2009 @ 8:37 pm

  32. speaking of, did my paypal come through, and did you ever research who won the IP-address-related bet in your absence?

    Comment by carlitos — 4/13/2009 @ 8:49 pm

  33. 1) Yes, it did, and thank you very much. It’s appreciated.

    2) I did, and JD appears to have won.

    Comment by Patterico — 4/13/2009 @ 8:52 pm

  34. I thought you had a better sense of humor than that.

Methinks you’ve forgotten which side of that spat you were on. (insert some sort of smiley-thing here)

But no, I’m not about to crack wise about something that could offend 1) everyone who writes a blog or 2) every woman who reads a blog. (Seriously, check out the latest comments at my place. I’m a smooth operator, er, I would be, if I wanted to be, and I think Karl’s got the courage of his convictions, and doesn’t want to be, er, you know, that either.)

In all seriousness: I’m off for the night, but even though I think Karl’s absolutely wrong about pretty much everything, his thoroughness has earned the respect of this nit-picky scholar. I value diligence over raw processing power and work ethic over ego. Smarter-than-average folks are a dime-a-dozen, but people willing to put in the time to do the research are rare birds. So even though Karl draws all the wrong conclusions, I can’t help but admire the work he puts in and the forcefulness of his (wrong, but still solid) arguments. (I mean, he could recycle lesson plans from ‘94 and think them totally applicable, you know, because. But Karl insists on thoroughness, so what can I say?)

  35. Crap. Well, he’s probably still cleaning powdered sugar out of his microwave, so I guess I can live with that.

    Comment by carlitos — 4/13/2009 @ 8:54 pm

  36. Thank you. No applause necessary. Just throw money. At Pat.

  40. Ah yes. Plus, I could not get all of that pink coated marshmallow fluff off of everything. In some places, it appears to have melded to the structure of the microwave, a sort-of marshmallow powder coating if you will.

    Comment by JD — 4/13/2009 @ 9:19 pm

  41. In retrospect, this is just an extension of my grand theory on how to avoid being asked to do things that you do not like doing. This little fiasco has me banned from the kitchen, which is not an altogether bad outcome. The theory is that when asked to do something you do not like to do, rather than complain, you should perform the task badly. Not just a little bad, but horrific, bad beyond words. This got me out of much wedding planning. I will never be asked to paint anything ever again. Plumbing? Forget about it.

It is also not a theory that you should share with your significant other.

    Comment by JD — 4/13/2009 @ 9:32 pm

  42. JD – Now you can use the old microwave for more EXPERIMENTS!!!

The plan worked after all. Just don’t tell Better Half.

  43. “Sometimes mindless humor is just … mindless humor.”

EW1 – Don’t sell me short. Darleen claims this place is the home of classist, sexist commenters. I can’t hold a candle to the comments at PW, but I’m trying to do my part.

    Comment by daleyrocks — 4/13/2009 @ 9:52 pm

  44. I acknowledged JD’s win here. The PayPal deposit should clear soon and I’ll send Patterico the $10 as soon as it does.

Just as an aside, I see the microwave “incident” as karmic justice. Even when someone wins a bet against me, they lose in the long run. Not my doing… it just happens. ;)

  45. The theory is that when asked to do something you do not like to do, rather than complain, you should perform the task badly.

JD, I am now more determined than ever to purge this foul mindset from my boys before they enter marriage! This was their M.O. all through their teenage years when I asked them to do chores. Funny how when their dad told them to do the same chores, they were models of efficiency. BTW, what’s your wife’s email address, anyway?

    Comment by Dana — 4/13/2009 @ 9:59 pm

  46. Oh and Karl, congratulations. I read the list and you are certainly in good company. Your posts here are always compelling and always draw the reader into further consideration, often from a bit of a different angle. (I was happy to see the RSMcCain in the Green Room too.)

Darleen claims this place is the home of classist, sexist commenters.

    Oh please.

You must not be fully liberated. Or something.

I believe that in the Navy and Coast Guard, this is formally taught in OJT as “malicious compliance.”
