The New Blue Dress: Yanny or Laurel?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Patterico @ 8:01 am

You remember the gold and white dress that some weirdos thought was blue? This is like the audio version of that. Listen to this and then vote.

Now take the poll. I understand it’s not perfect, but it’s much closer to one than the other, so choose the best answer:

What do you hear in this recording?
Yanny
Laurel

As with the dress, I can process this one way and one way only, and it astounds me that anyone processes it differently. But they do.

  1. I heard Laurel but this is interesting. Typically, auditory tests don’t test for hyperacuity, especially at high frequencies, but there is/are equipment/tests that can measure these things. I imagine hyperacuity at higher frequencies would affect how and what we hear.

In addition, as noted at thelink, it could also be related to what we expect to hear. If so, it would be interesting to know if the political, religious, educational, and/or cultural beliefs of the two groups (those who hear Laurel vs those who hear Yanny) are similar.

  2. Imagine the impact this has on music appreciation.

  3. The frequency at which the Yanny is said is not that high.

That said, I can hear both at once. I haven’t yet met anyone else who can. I wonder if musical training has anything to do with that.

  4. It makes sense that it might. Maybe music really does “speak” to you more than others.
