Stephen Miller Rips Shameless Jim Acosta to Shreds on Immigration

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:51 pm

What a performance. Miller comes off as smart and like someone who knows what he is talking about. Meanwhile, Acosta comes off as preening, foolish, and rude.

Y’all can televise more briefings if you’re going to put up this caliber of spokesman.

By the way, Miller is spot on when it comes to people learning English. Acosta is so clueless it’s embarrassing.

  1. Now that I have listened to it twice, Miller could have done with a tad less of the whole “that is so insulting!” shtick.

But still. Miles above Sanders or the dummox Trump. I don’t know a lot about him, but he’s clearly sharp.

  2. Some people deal with questions which have planted axioms better than others. Gingrich and Coulter are really good, and this Miller guy is pretty hot, too.

  3. He’s from the belly of the beast, Santa Monica. In high school and at Duke, he proudly and resolutely stood up to progressives, a lonely endeavor. He is a bit over the top and sometimes manufactures controversy. His lefty parents are wondering where they went wrong.

  6. there’s no such thing as reporters

  7. But Acosta did not behave like a reporter. Not the least little bit. So maybe he’d be ok?

  13. CSPAN has a longer version of the video on their Twitter feed. Right after the video that Patterico posted ends, an older African-American woman reporter inquires of Miller:

“Are you targeting the African-American community. Now you brought it up again. You said you wanted to have a conversation and not target. Is it going to be a target here? You’re saying to the African-American community, are you going to target. I’m not trying to be funny, but you keep saying. . . .”

Now I confess that I have no idea what the hell she was trying to ask here, but Miller seemed to interpret it as question as to whether the administration would be working with the African-American community to make sure they had the opportunity to compete for jobs that had recently mostly gone to immigrants, and he assured her that they would. I just love, though, how amid all the talk about this immigration change would affect the Hispanic and Muslim and Asian communities, this reporter had to make sure that the black community had a piece of the action too. It goes a long way towards demonstrating that progressives are big on tribalism and seek to split everyone up into categories.

    JVW (42615e)

  14. JVW, I don’t think progressives are seeking to split everyone up into categories; I think progressives recognize that people *are* already split up into different groups, and that as a result of that, people’s group membership results in them having incredibly different experiences of the world — which can only be fixed if we can recognize the differences in experience and work to remedy them.

    aphrael (3f0569)

  15. My larger point though, aphrael, is that I think that not only are progressives not interested in bringing people together across the disparate interest groups, but modern progressivism is structured so that they benefit from everyone staying in their own lane and not trying to venture outside of it. You might accuse me of undue cynicism, maybe rightfully so, but I think the last thing that progressives want to see is African-Americans and conservatives unit on immigration or school choice or other areas where perhaps progressivism hasn’t served their interests.

    JVW (42615e)

  16. By the way, Miller is spot on when it comes to people learning English.

More spotty: “You Are Exempt From The English Language Requirement, But Are Still Required To Take The Civics Test If You Are: Age 50 or older at the time of filing for naturalization and have lived as a permanent resident (green card holder) in the United States for 20 years (commonly referred to as the “50/20” exception).”

  24. Miller comes off as smart and like someone who knows what he is talking about.

But the CBS Evening News indicated that he didn’t, because the poem on the Statue of Liberty dates back to the very beginning. And why not? That’s what was what was true then, It was just plain factual.

I am not sure it was actually inscribed right away, though. The poem was written in connection with a fundraiser to raise money for the pedestal.

  28. Steven Miller should read Marshall McLuhan’s ‘The Medium Is the Message.’ The way Miller presents himself is much too ‘hot’ for a ‘cool’ medium like TV.

His self presentation may be marginally more apropos for a closed door press briefing, but it will never play well to a broadcast audience. The way he comes off makes jerks like Acosta look better by comparison.

Everyone can be civil, it’s not that hard. And calling them “these people” is an example of the partisan, tribal Us vs Them approach championed by the Left and adopted by the Trump Right. If the President and his spokespeople can’t be civil to everyone, then they can’t represent everyone.

  35. Allowing Acosta equal time for multiple minutes to make his little speeches and move on to a new smear every time Miller shot down the previous one was a mistake. Let him ask a question and a follow-up or two but giving this idiot all that time was exactly what he wanted, even though he looked the fool.

BTW – The poem The New Colossus was written in 1883 as part of an effort to raise money for the SOL pedestal. The French statue was set on the pedestal in 1886 and the American poem was engraved on it in 1903.

Also btw – at the massive 1886 dedication, the poem was not referenced at all.

Also btw – the author Emma Lazarus was a fanatical Zionist and her poem clearly was influenced by Jews fleeing the Russian pogroms. Ask any liberal if her poem also applies to Israel.

  37. Caution. Facts you knew already..

    Esquire
Miller doesn’t know dick about Emma Lazarus and the Statue of Liberty. She wrote the poem, “The New Colossus,” from which the famous lines on the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal were taken in 1883 for the purpose of raising funds for … wait for it … the Statue of Liberty.

  39. Nascent beginnings for Goebbels at that #16..

“(Duke) gave Miller the perfect opportunity to hone the right-wing political views he had espoused since adolescence. His passion for American exceptionalism and racial superiority eventually led him to jobs in Washington, D.C., first as a spokesperson for two right-wing members of Congress, Michele Bachmann and John Shadegg, and then as a policy adviser and communications director for conservative Alabama senator Jeff Sessions, now the U.S. attorney general. Sessions, with Miller at his side, almost single-handedly killed the 2013 bipartisan immigration-reform bill that would have created a path to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants.”

  43. for the purpose of raising funds for … wait for it … the Statue of Liberty.

No. For raising funds for the BASE. The Statue was already here. But putting the poem on the base came up later, after she had died. It was not engraved on the base until 1903, TWENTY years after her death.

    Wikipedia

“The New Colossus” was the first entry read at the exhibit’s opening, but was forgotten and played no role at the opening of the statue in 1886. In 1901, Lazarus’s friend Georgina Schuyler began an effort to memorialize Lazarus and her poem, which succeeded in 1903 when a plaque bearing the text of the poem was put on the inner wall of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.[4]

    1. The West was wide open and empty, and it was a national objective to fill it up with Europeans.
    2. There was very little in the form of public welfare, other than sanitation and other civic programs.
    3. The robber baron era was consumptive of workers.

As a result, immigration from Europe was wide open, so long as you checked in at the gate and had no communicable disease. I imagine TB would have been a problem. The statue BECAME synonymous with immigration due to the location of Ellis Island, the NY entry point. Only after that did the association of “The New Colossus” make sense.

A lot of AZ, NV and NM are federal reserves of some kind. And desert. But in 1880, “west” meant “Minnesota”, “Dakota”, or “Wyoming” which are not deserts. Or the west coast, but that was unreachable for most until the Union Pacific was finished. Many of them helped build it, including many of my Irish ancestors who settled in California in the 1880’s.

    ropelight (eaa946)

  69. Is this on topic?

    Sen Levine
I’ve always supported merit-based immigration. I think we should always want to attract the best and brightest to the United States.

“Unfortunately, the other part of this proposal would reduce legal immigration by half, including many immigrants who work legally in our agriculture, tourism and service industries.

“South Carolina’s number one industry is agriculture and tourism is number two. If this proposal were to become law, it would be devastating to our state’s economy which relies on this immigrant workforce.

“South Carolina’s agriculture and tourism industry advertise for American workers and want to fill open positions with American workers. Unfortunately, many of these advertised positions go unfilled. Hotels, restaurants, golf courses and farmers will tell you this proposal – to cut legal immigration in half — would put their business in peril.

“Finally, I fear this proposal will not only hurt our agriculture, tourism and service economy in South Carolina, it incentivizes more illegal immigration as positions go unfilled. After dealing with this issue for more than a decade, I know that when you restrict legal labor to employers it incentivizes cheating.”
