Sharyl Attkisson Speaks of “Chilling Effect” from Obama Administration Leaning on CBS News Executives

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:45 am

Worth watching in its entirety:

Ed Morrissey:

Attkisson told Kurtz that the White House would pressure her to change or drop her reporting, and when that didn’t work, they worked her bosses instead. Kurtz asked how this differed from the “working the refs” actions that go on all the time in Washington, and Attkisson says that it went too far. “It’s just a lot of obfuscation, accusations, saying things are ‘phony scandals,’ ‘bogus,’ ‘not real,’ giving misinformation and false information. I mean, that’s provably true in some cases.”

She also speaks of working to get sources to go on the record, only to let the source down when the risk they took going public leads to no story.

And the oppression still goes on.

Therefore, more regulations of the coal and oil industries must be implemented. Beginning today.

  6. This, in a nutshell, is the danger we all face. It’s the danger that Jonah Goldberg wrote about, that everyone laughed at.

Here is the question to the press. What could the White House do that would make the denounce this administration, the way the MSM did GWB? I think it is an excellent question.

Because I believe the answer is “almost nothing.”

    It’s “Happy Face Armband” fascism.

I want an adversarial press, holding everyone to their word and promises. Can the Left say the same?

    I don’t think so.

You are welcome to work the refs, but if you overstep your bounds the ref can call a penalty or toss you out of the contest. I’m pretty sure Sharyl Attkisson didn’t have that ultimate authority where Obama was concerned, not if she didn’t want his henchmen from the IRS or the NSA at her door.

  11. So, where is the entrepreneur with the guts and capital to create a news site with Sharyl and the other investigative reporters like her who are being shut out at the MSM outlets? Can you imagine the impact of an all-star team of investigative reporters that went after the left and the right in the name of the nation?

  20. Why do some of you drive-by-lefties hate Sharyl Atkisson so much ? Other than attempting to expose the truthiness about the corruption of The Power, what has Ms. Atkisson ever done that is so angering to you ?

  21. Perry is off his meds again. JEA dropped in under yet another IP addy too. This sure has the serial trolls riled up.

  22. 15 phil donahue was fired for opposing iraq war as ge memo states google it and his rating were more then anyone else on msnbc at time. ge defense contracts not low ratings got phil donahue fired. 17 mike malloy is most hated lefty radio talk show in conservative polls and blogs. listen to him call you sob’s and nazi’s on the air!

perry – I didn’t know Malloy got his material from Pelosi. No wonder he sucks so badly.

  25. Perry, go occupy a rocking chair on a front porch. Or something.

    Elephant Stone (8a7f08)

  26. Who is Mike Malloy? If he is the best leftist radio person, it is rather telling that we have no clue who he is. The idea that Donahue and Olbergasm were fired to to pressure from the Bush admin is hysterical.

    JD (5c1832)

  27. “Who is Mike Malloy? If he is the best leftist radio person, it is rather telling that we have no clue who he is.”

JD – Malloy is the reason progressive hate radio can’t survive on its own.

  31. I saw a story somewhere that Internet advert income has passed the three majors’ combined.

Also struck lately by the restriction of televised adverts into odd silos.

Luxury items, cars, vactions, financial services targeting the quite affluent.

Insurance, pharmecuticals, security systems, etc., targeting the retirees.

Not a heck of a lot for young families, the notionally large economic groups without disposable income.

    gary gulrud (e2cef3)

  32. That’s an astute observation, Gary.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  33. Heh. Well you can’t say we didn’t at least learn something from Perry’s brief little drop-in today–the name of Mike Malloy. Has Mike Malloy’s name ever come up on this blog before? I certainly don’t remember it! And hopefully today will be the last time Mike Malloy’s name comes up as well.

  36. I guess Anthony Bourdain, who’s got a Foodie-Travel-Zeitgeist show “Parts Unknown” on CNN, has a ‘Las Vegas’ segment next Sunday evening. Careful they also have other unwatchable stuff too.

I’ve recently caught shows on Myanmar, Libya and Denmark lately. The last featured the world’s top-rated restaurant, the Nomo, in Copenhagen. The menu featured symbiotic farms growing 130 crops together, ocean fare from the Baltic Sea, and multigenerational fungi, i.e., foodstuffs far removed from the original ‘fresh’ kill.

Fascinating stuff if one is into eclecticism.

  39. Gary Gulrud,

That’s a good column you linked to. The theme of it reminds me of Abe Lincoln’s quote about only being as happy as one decides to be, as well as the quote by concentration camp survivor Victor Frankl, who said about his oppressors, “The one thing you can’t take away from me is the way I choose to respond to what you do to me. The last of one’s freedoms is to choose ones attitude in any given circumstance.”

  48. mister happyfeet, you should put yourself in attkisson’s shoes for a moment. (hey, your fetish is your own bizness !)ultimately, she’s probably interested in getting another job in journalism.

if she were to totally trash CBS, that might affect her ability to get hired elsewhere. they always say it is tacky to trash your current/former employer when interviewing for a new job.
by the same token, if you trash your ex-girlfriend to your newest date, that would come across as a bit tacky.

    Elephant Stone (8a7f08)

  49. she has to make a judgement I think

all this pussyfooting around is so 80s

if she wants to work for fascists again…

then what does that make her?

    that’s a rhetorical question

    happyfeet (8ce051)

  50. no, it’s not so much a matter of ideology.
rather, it’s a matter of a prospective employer entertaining the question, “if we were to hire her, and then sometime down the road she were to find fault with us, would she publicly trash us the way she trashed CBS in 2014 ?”

she’s trying to be tactful, yet at the same time allow people to read between the lines.

    Elephant Stone (8a7f08)

  51. she should investigate why every single piece of fruit you buy has to have a sticker on it anymore

    that’s so weird

  54. OT if I may,
A crowd source request and a suggestion for a post:
    1) Anybody know a good summary with details of the disconnect between the actual science of the IPCC report and the summary that was just released. I am looking at WUWT and other places myself, but if someone knows the best because they’ve already done the work I would appreciate it
    2) Anybody interested in the cattle rancher standoff in Nevada? I read some interesting things over at PowerLine, didn’t know if others have info/opinion
    Thanks

Another good treatment from a few years back by German physicists can be found via WUWT with some effort, if you choose the quest.

    2. I also find this dustup interesting. It would appear Burwell’s BLM has chosen this hill at Reid’s dyspeptic insistence.

  56. So SNOWDEN is a hero for giving CHINA and RUSSIA piles of AMERICAN SECRETS.

Libs are sick in the head. I’ve never met on who wasn’t.

In a way, however, the situation you mention has flip flopped over the past several years, but not to a degree that is truly morally equivalent. Nonetheless, if a conservative were in the White House, a larger number of people on the right would be (or would be far more) irate or indignant about Snowden’s shenanigans while being a bit less disgusted by CBS News’s treatment of Attkinsson, and, for the left, the opposite of that would be true. But the left, since it in general tends to downplay the importance of ethics and integrity (and instead loves to pray at the altar of liberalism), will be far more guilty of two-faced, hypocritical, double-standard forms of idiocy or lunacy, in this instance or others.

  58. #22 screeched about Phil Donaghue:
his rating were more then anyone else on msnbc at time
That’s like saying “She’s the prettiest girl in Pumpkin Patch, Iowa, population 250.”

And I never heard of Mike Malloy before I read the comment. Man, what a terrible threat to the right he was.
