Scotland Yard Warns of Mumbai-Style Attack

[Guest post by DRJ]

Britain’s Scotland Yard is warning of a Mumbai-style attack on London in the coming year:

“In a [Scotland Yard] briefing in London 12 days ago, a senior detective from SO15, the Metropolitan police counter-terrorism command, said: “Mumbai is coming to London.”

The detective said companies should anticipate a shooting and hostage-taking raid “involving a small number of gunmen with handguns and improvised explosive devices”.

The warning — the bluntest issued by police — has underlined an assessment that a terrorist cell may be preparing an attack on London early next year.”

Authorities report an increase in chatter recently, especially during the past 2 weeks, and describe the threat as “very real.”

  1. well, at least they can count on armed citizens to jump in and put a stop to things……

    oh.
    wait….

    never mind.

that’s gonna be hard on the sheep.

  2. if it does happen, what is going to be the backlash on the local muslim population, and who benefits from that short & long term?

  3. Given the Brits’ gun-control frenzy of the past few years, they’re pretty much defenseless once the shooting starts.

  4. kinda my point, although we’re not much better off here in the PRC…..

    /fortunately, i think evil. %-)

  5. Wait a minute, the article says that this information comes from “communications captured by electronic eavesdropping agencies.” I never would have expected Great Britain — the nation that helped refine the idea of citizens having individual rights that the King cannot usurp — would fall into the evil Bush/Cheney/Ashcroft practice of “warantless wiretapping.”

Oh yeah, I am sure that Scotland Yard always gets the appropriate levels of approval from whatever magistrate is appointed to handle these sorts of issues [eye roll].

    Bombs? bfd
Somewhere there may be a racist in a 10 year old closet.

Maybe Ms Waters and/or Ms Richardson will commission and maybe even fund the next inquisition… or maybe the last inquisitions were pre-emptive and acted as good faith downpayments. No one can say.

  8. I think it’s better to absorb the hit of the death cultists than create divisiveness. We should be reminded from time to time that white culture is racist and deserves a kick in the pants to remind us that we don’t have the right to have our own culture.

Shit, Patterico will hold that against me someday after the sarcastic irony is no longer apparent.

  9. And if any of the victims attempt to defend themselves, they will go to prison.

GCHQ has never been bothered by such oddities as the 1st & 4th Amendments, even if The Yard has gone a bit wobbly on the Human Rights Front.

  11. GHCQ is their NSA, I’ve watched enough MI-5 to know that. They don’t bother with anything like a Constitution over there.

Then again, we shouldn’t be so sanguine. DCIS found no reason to flag Hassan’s contacts with a known AQ recruiter, and the show NCIS turned their Christmas episode!!! thing as a meditation on those endless Christian honor killings against innocent Moslems, as well as there spinoff, about guilty Iraq vets, turning into Christian IED makers and suicide bombers. The DHS template, ‘it’s whats for dinner’

  12. Too bad the victims are prohibited by law from arming themselves in order to defend their own lives. Hitler would have loved the modern day gun grabbers in merry ole England and could have invaded in a heartbeat with no resistence…. Oh wait, back then, back in the dark ages, the Brits were armed. Silly me. Oh yeah, and the crime rate much was lower back then, go figure.

Can’t we all just get along and hold hands and sing Kumbiah?

  14. Our friends on the left love to blame President Bush for the September 11th attacks, because he was warned, in advance, that al Qaeda was planning to strike. Of course, the warnings were not very specific as to time, place and method, and they had no names associated with them.

And now Prime Minister Brown has the same thing in front of him: a warning that the Islamists are going to strike — somewhere.

So, you’re Gordon Brown, and you have this information: what would you do to prevent the supposedly coming attacks, that would be in line with British law and European liberal sympathies?

Where Great Britain used to be is still a nuclear power. I’d just wipe out Cairo and Mecca and say “There’s more where that came from”.

No, the Brits went through a serious de-arming of the civilian populace in the Twenties due to the fear of a Marxist uprising of the Lower Classes.

After Dunkirk, where the British Army had abondoned a huge share of their weaponry, there was a drive here in the States (conducted by, among others, the NRA) to supply rifles, pistols, and shotguns to the Brits to be issued to the Home Guards, for the last ditch battle against the invaders. Ironically, many of those guns still in civilian hands were collected in the last great Gun-Grab in the UK and destroyed – I guess they couldn’t find the records of who donated them back in 1940, so that they could be returned to the families here in the States that saved their asses back when they were desperate.

  17. “…So, you’re Gordon Brown…”

Well, there are plusses and minuses for the PM.
The downside (which also could be argued as a personal-positive) is that he very well could be out of office before this attack comes off –
his polling makes GWB look like George Washington.

On the plus side, Britain has a very capable surveillance system, and electronic intelligence community.
The question, as it always is, is whether or not the pols have the spine to deal in an effective manner with the intell data that is handed them.

  18. Obviously this shows the racism inherent in the british security services and what needs to be done is they need their arms and legs tied behind their backs. And when a few dozen britons are killed it will be the security service’s fault.
who am i kidding though the idea of personal liberties is a joke to nu labor and half a joke to the “conservative” party of cameron. But theyll still probably fail at stopping an attack. Theres more useful endeavours to spend the british states overreaching power on – like making sure christians arent oppressing people by displaying and/or advocating their religion.
there will be a reckoning in britain some day as well.
