Kenyon Martin: “I’m Going to Take Care of It”

Filed under: Sports — DRJ @ 6:37 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

Mark Cuban owns the Dallas Mavericks NBA basketball team, and he’s an enthusiastic owner. Kenyon Martin plays for the Denver Nuggets and the two teams are currently meeting in the NBA playoffs. Denver leads Dallas 3-0 and can sweep with a win tonight.

After Saturday night’s game, Cuban reportedly told Martin’s mother that the Nuggets – including her son – are “thugs.” Others claim Cuban told Martin’s mother her son is a punk. Today Martin issued this response:

“Don’t say nothing to my kids or my family,” Martin said, according to The Post. “If you got something to say, say it to me. But I’m going to take care of it. I’m not going to do the whole media thing, back and forth. That’s his thing. I’m more of a face-to-face type of dude.

“So whenever the opportunity presents itself, then I will address it. But I got a game to go win. At some point I will, but I got a game to go win, first and foremost. So that’s my focus and concentration right now.”

Tonight’s game will tip-off in minutes, and there may be more eyes on Cuban and Martin than on the teams.

  1. Cuban is a guy who got incredibly lucky in business, then decided to spend the rest of his life by acting like a first – class narcissist/fratboy, adolescent, grade – A douchebag. I thank the heavens he never got close to buying the Cubs – sure, he spends money, but he also fancies himself the GM and coach as well, with predictably disasterous results. SWEEP!

  2. To be fair to Cuban, it is hard to overcome the indoctination @ IU. And, though he never should have said anything to Kenyon’s mother, Kenyon is, in fact, a thug. A thug in a long line of thugs to come out of Huggins’ and the Bearcats program.

  3. As a Dallas resident and Mavericks fan, Cuban should have kept his big ole mouth shut.

    Difficult task for that man.

Seconds ’til tip off…I’m sure the Mavs are thrilled to have Cuban in the stands.

  4. As a die-hard White Sox fan, I so badly wish that Mark Cuban could have bought the Cubs. That would have been so much fun. Almost as much fun as “updating” realaudio (Mark Cuban’s cash cow) every 8 minutes for 5 years. God bless him.

  5. They seem to deserve each other…

  6. carlitos – I could not agree more. I cannot count the number of prayers I said hoping Cuban would buy the Scrubs. The idea of him dumping loads and loads of cash into that team would have raised hopes and expectations through the roof, making the inevitable collapse all the more painful 😉

Denver is really laying the wood to the Mavs.

In fairness, it’s not like he would make things any worse with that franchise.

  8. Blackhawks tied 3 – 3 with Vancouver after 2 periods. The resurgence of this proud franchise is so much fun, I hope that it continues.

  9. But carlitos, the friendly confines are still a better place to watch a ball game than whatever they call Comiskey these days.

  10. Trash talk in sports – Not just for playahs anymore

    Thugs in the NBA! Shocked!

  11. Guys, There are other cities besides Chicago, I can’t seem to remember them but I know thy’re out there

  12. Baseball is played in St. Louis.

  13. You rock, JD! You aren’t a Purdue fan, by any chance?

Kenyon Martin is indeed a thug, and as you say, typical of Bob Huggins and his program. World class cheater, that Huggins, as well.

    Andy (f8f746)

  14. Andy – I am not. My favorite t-shirt says Purdue sucks, but IU swallows. I am a Fighting Illini.

  15. As I said yesterday, I love having DRJ and her sports posts back.

Kenyon Martin vs. Mark Cuban? Brings to mind Henry Kissinger’s famous quip during the Iran-Iraq War: It’s a pity that they can’t both lose.

  17. Whose ears are bigger? Barcky or Reggie Miller?

    JD (06f82d)

  18. Martin showed his thuggish side again tonite, barking the whole way off the court after their loss. SHOCKA

    JD (06f82d)

  19. So, JD, I’m wondering: Is Cuban a loud-mouth owner or a shrewd motivator of his team?

I’m gonna go with door #3… both. 😉

  21. Stashiu beat me to that one. I would say that the 2 choices offered are not mutually exclusive.

  23. i quit caring about professional tree hockey years ago….. and this is another example of why.

have the Lakers lost their series yet?

    redc1c4 (9c4f4a)

  24. Dallas Sports Fans. I am one, and yet I know they are in tight competition with LA fans for worst.

I don’t know why this is… Dallas is a decent enough place.

    Juan (4cdfb7)

  25. Sorry to hear that, JD. You guys stole our coach. Then again, we seem to have gotten another good one.

I always enjoyed trashing Lou Henson. Bruce Weber I like a lot, though.

    Andy (f8f746)

  26. Lou Henson is one of the best men I have ever had the honor of knowing.

    JD (c6b598)

  27. But that hairpiece looked like a dead Tarantula, JD.

A thug in a long line of thugs to come out of Huggins’

Sure, but the biggest thugs in pro basketball of all time were the Piston’s teams in the late 80’s and early 90’s. The Bulls learned how to deal with it, that’s part of what makes championship teams. Cuban exemplifies why his teams will never win the big one – all he does is whine and complain, which sets an example for his players. Just shut your piehole and let the players sort it out.

Blackhawks tied 3 – 3 with Vancouver after 2 periods

Carlitos, I still remember going down to the old stadium during the 70’s and getting the cheap seats in the 3rd deck, and running back to the walls and banging on the huge baffles hanging there in order to make the noise even more deafening during the playoffs. No one’s happier than me to see the franchise come back from the dead.

    Dmac (1ddf7e)

  28. Dmac – Since I have shared a meal with you, I will forgive you, this one time.

The old Chicago Stadium was my all-time favorite hoops venue. Simply incredible to watch His Airness play there. So loud. Such an electric atmosphere. Not at all sterile like the new arenas. Remember when you could still smoke in the Stadium?

    JD (c6b598)

  29. Sure – but the omnipresent smells of smoke, popcorn and urine (they also had the circus in there every Winter) in the stadium from decades ago pretty much overwhelmed the senses to anything going on beside you during a particular game. You should have attended a Hawks game back then – you could lose a few decibels off your hearing after one of those playoff games, and the opposing players always said it was the most intimidating stadium to play in, even when the Hawks were fairly mediocre.
