Weekend Open Thread

[guest post by Dana]

Feel free to talk about anything you think is newsworthy or might interest readers.

I’ll start:

I didn’t realize that baseball legend Joe DiMaggio’s sister, Nellie, had been kidnapped by a rejected suitor in 1917:

Dominic Tringalli would not stop proposing.

The 29-year-old crab fisherman was obsessed with marrying Nellie DiMaggio, the oldest daughter of fellow San Francisco fisherman Joseph. He’d proposed over and over, but Nellie kept turning him down.

This, he decided, wouldn’t do.

The morning of June 19, 1917, Nellie was walking to work with a friend. At the corner of Mason and Filbert, a car came squealing up alongside them. Two men jumped out and grabbed her and her friend, Edna King. Tringalli picked up Nellie, who fought back. As he tried to stifle her yells, she bit his hand as hard as she could.

Edna King had a bit more luck; she was able to escape her captor. As the car drove off with her friend stuffed inside, she stood on the street and screamed.

The widow of civil rights leader Rev. Ralph Abernathy has died at 87. An important figure in the civil rights movement, Juanita Abernathy was the force behind the famed 1955 bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama:

She is credited with writing the business plan for the 1955 bus boycott in Montgomery, Ala., which protested the segregation of seating on public transportation in the city. The boycott — originally meant to last a day — went on for 381 days and eventually led to the courts declaring segregated seating unconstitutional.

Mitt Romney says no to endorsing Trump…or his three Republican challengers:

“I’m not planning on endorsing in the presidential race,” Romney, who has periodically sparred with Trump, told CNN in the Capitol. “At this stage, I’m not planning on endorsing in the primary or in the general.”

On Thursday, Romney told CNN that he has concerns with the move by several states to cancel their primary contests in a bid to help Trump as he faces challenges from Weld, former Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh and former South Carolina congressman and Gov. Mark Sanford.

“I would far prefer having an open primary, caucus, convention process … where people can be heard,” said Romney, who reiterated that he’s not running himself.

Romney also reiterated that he is not planning to run in 2020.

A solid gold toilet said to be worth more than $1 million has been stolen from the birthplace of Winston Churchill:

Police are on the hunt for a solid gold toilet valued at over $1 million that was stolen overnight on Saturday at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England, causing damage and flooding at the birthplace and ancestral home of Winston Churchill.

“The piece of art that has been stolen is a high-value toilet made out of gold that was on display at the palace,” Thames Valley Inspector Jess Milne told USA Today. “Due to the toilet being plumbed into the building, this has caused significant damage and flooding.”

[…]

“The artwork has not been recovered at this time but we are conducting a thorough investigation to find it and bring those responsible to justice,” Milne said.

The golden john actually performs its necessary bathroom functions and was part of an exhibit by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan titled “Victory is Not an Option” that opened at Blenheim Palace last Thursday. It had been built in a wood chamber opposite the room in which Churchill was born.

Holy crap!

And finally, a horrific piece of news that will immediately remind you of Kermit Gosnell:

Police say 2,246 medically preserved fetal remains were found on the property of Ulrich George Klopfer, a late abortion doctor who used to operate a South Bend clinic.

Klopfer died on Sept. 3.

On Sept. 12, the Will County (Illinois) Coroner’s Office received a call from an attorney representing his family. They reported finding fetal remains among Klopfer’s personal property and requested proper removal.

Will County sheriff’s detectives, crime scene investigators and representatives from the coroner’s office went to the address and were directed to an area of the property where 2,246 medically preserved fetal remains were located.

Because killing these babies isn’t enough for these sick bastards. They have to keep trophies of their kills. In light of this piece of news, tell us how you really feel about abortion to the point of birth up until the baby’s first breath, Democrats. What? You don’t want to know about this, or look at it?? Anything to avoid seeing the humanity of small dead bodies. Anything, and I mean anything to avoid acknowledging that they were divinely formed and woven by hands of love in their mother’s womb.

  1. Hope you have a restful weekend.

  2. I saw the toilet story. It was only on exhibit at Blenheim, not part of the original castle. It’s “contemporary art” by some spaghetti-eater who named it “America”. Solid 18kt gold. Hopefully, it’s already been sawed up and melted down.

  3. Thanks, you too, gotta good start, watching “Stop Making Sense”…

    Spittin’ words and phlegm

Ah, all wet, yeah, you might need a raincoat

  6. I posted a link about the strike against abquaiq which was predicted 11 years ago.

    Narciso (7658f4)

  7. @5 Jim Jones created a deathcult which proves that religion is evil and Rober Dear shot up an abortion clinic, which proves that prolife people are murderers.

Yeah, neither of those is a reasonable conclusion either.

(Third trimester abortions are the result of something going terribly terribly wrong. No sane person would stay pregnant for 7 months and then get an abortion)

    Nic (896fdf)

  8. 4… yep, mg, one of my old high school buds saw that one and expressed the same feeling

My wife and I saw two shows on that tour… one outdoors in Costa Mesa, Ca. in the summer and then one of the shows at the Pantages that was used for the film… I think it was in December of that year. I was telling my wife this morning that I think that was the best show, tightest bands we’ve seen.

  10. Over at Instapundit they linked a Michael Yon post from Hong Kong where a friend of Yons makes some notes about Chinas ongoing problem raising enough protein for its people.
The trade war has exposed one of China’s basic weaknesses and the fact that Brazil and Argentina don’t grow enough soybeans to fill the gap left by China shutting out the US.

The ruling class also likes its pork… and the US has pork.

They lost election thanks to green party who wants to ban all guns. jill stein votes were difference in michigan, pennsylvania and wisconsin. Ralph nader votes were the difference in floriduh and new hampshire.

  16. The story of Andrew McCabe impending indictment just got weirder.

Did a federal grand jury refuse to hand up an indictment of former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe?
No media organization has reported that this is what happened Thursday, but something clearly happened when the grand jury met—and that something wasn’t the McCabe indictment that everyone was expecting.

If I were the kind of guy to spitball, Trump pushed the DOJ to indict McCabe but a grand jury was unwilling to play along. A grand jury isn’t required for indictment, but it means that the DOJ probably won’t win in court.

    Paul Montagu (dfd657)

  17. On that we can agree.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  18. of course, Byron tau who has recycled every fusion tidbit, would take McCabe’s word for it, lets be frank one cannot make these officials accountable, take the prosecutors in the stevens case, a decade ago, after obvious fraud, the doj reversed the minor penalties judge Sullivan imposed,

  19. We shall soon see, Paul.

  20. A DC grand jury declining to indict a swampy swamp thing would be oh so very shocking.

    Munroe (732181)

  21. that’s sadly likely, now the convictions of Flynn’s business partner, are under scrutiny with judge trenga, and the attorney for concord, have discovered a whole treasure trove of material, the prosecutors did not initially present,

  22. One of my favorite games, Through the Ages, just got an expansion a couple days ago.

It’s a fast-paced civilization-building card-game (originally a board game, then given a faithful online adaptation that you can play on PC or mobile). 2-4 players, although you can play solo vs. AI in the computer version too.

As a promotion for the expansion, the base digital game is 40% off (so it costs ~$10) if you also buy the expansion (for $5). There are no other costs – you buy it and can play as much as you want (the base game has to be purchased separately on each platform – iOS, Android, or PC – you want to play on, but the expansion is “buy once, play everywhere”). If you like this type of thing I strongly recommend giving it a try. The design is brilliant, it has an excellent (and entertaining) tutorial to get you started, and every game is incredibly interesting and tense. Extremely addictive!

The physical board game is incredibly beautiful too, and will be getting the expansion cards in a month or two.

  24. Amusingly, the specifics of what McCabe is (possibly) being indicted for blow up multiple fact-free TrumpWorld conspiracy theories.

McCabe was pressured by a Clinton apparatchik to tell the press she was in the clear, and he refused to play ball (*boom*).

Then, in retaliation, the Clinton apparatchik planted a false story saying it anyway, and smearing McCabe and his wife (*boom*).

McCabe then went through the FBI office of legal counsel (but apparently w/o permission – that is the point he was allegedly dishonest about) to contact the press and knock down the false pro-Clinton story, thus directly assisting the Trump campaign a couple weeks before the election (*boom*).

And one of the key witnesses against McCabe, who could have gotten him off scot-free simply by saying the disclosure to the press was approved, is none other than his supposed DEEPSTATEWITCHHUNT co-conspirator, James Comey (*boom*).

Fortunately, in TrumpWorld the facts never get in the way of an agreeable narrative!

    Dave (1bb933)

    Heh, I wouldn’t know, I didn’t sit down during the entire show…

  26. Saw TH for free in Gainesville, outdoor stage, SiT tour. It had just rained and I forget who the add-on rhythm guitar player was but he was on fire and in the mild humidity of that evening, you could see the steam rising off of his back. It was a kind of moment that stuck with me.

  27. Mitt Romney won’t endorse Trump. Despite Trump endorsing HIM in 2018 and 2012. What a pretentious Jack-ass. And isn’t it weird how Mitt didnt’ say a word against Trump – WHILE HE WAS RUNNING FOR OFFICE. What’s amazing is how, no matter how much he lies, no matter how much Mitt Flip-flops, no matter how much he attacks his fellow Republicans, he’s still the Great moral leader – to some.

But its like McCain. 35 percent the Republicans LOVED Him. No matter what he did. He could’ve shot 12 of Republcian supporters and endorsed Hillary, and the rest of his Supporters would’ve shrugged it off and kept on LOVING McCain.

It is, for a federal felony. The problem, I think, is that they did not give it a catchy name, like say “Operation Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs”.

  33. Rather, he leaked the existence of the FBI’s Clinton Foundation investigation. Even in congressional testimony, the FBI’s then-director, James Comey, had tried to keep the existence of that investigation confidential (as the FBI customarily does with investigations). Yet McCabe orchestrated the leak, apparently for personal reasons — viz., to refute the suggestion that he and the FBI were in the tank for Clinton.

The point of Flynn pleading guilty is not whether he is in fact guilty. It’s that he has no case anymore.

Yeah, nice try, Nic, but Jim Jones had way more to do with trendy San Francisco left-wing politics than he did with religion. Recall that Jones started off as a communist sympathizer; in fact, he likely moved to religion in order to try and provide a cover for his hardcore leftism. And in addition to claiming he was the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, he also claimed to be the reincarnation of Vladimir Lenin. You do recall that his allies in San Francisco included Harvey Milk, Willie Brown, and Jerry Brown, don’t you?

  47. The Iranian drone attack that knocked out half of KSA’s oil production is kind of a big dill.
These weren’t garden-variety drones. Sixteen months ago, the IDF shot down an Iranian drone, the kind that can drop a 500-pound bomb, noted here and pictured at this link…
    https://theaviationist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/New-Iranian-drone-copy-RQ-170.jpg
…which is similar in design to an American UAV the Iranians captured seven years ago…
    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/60/RQ-170_art_impression.jpg
Suffice to say, this is an actual act of war by the Iranian regime. When some Iranian navy boats were messing with oil tankers in the Persian Gulf a few months back, we had a perfect opportunity to decimate their navy, and Trump passed on it. At minimum, it would have sent a message. Now more than ever, the theocratic authoritarian regime needs to get spanked.

  48. Guys, guys, guys re-read Nic at (7); he is not saying that Jim Jones proves religion is evil or that Robert Dear proves prolife people are murderers. He states quite clearly that those are unreasonable conclusions to draw. Which they are. Where Nic goes off the rails is when he tries to compare those to Dana’s statement on abortion, for which I am still trying to puzzle out the connection.

  51. Guys, guys, guys re-read Nic at (7); he is not saying that Jim Jones proves religion is evil or that Robert Dear proves prolife people are murderers. He states quite clearly that those are unreasonable conclusions to draw.

Yes, I think we all understood the point Nic was trying to make. But my quibble is this: Ulrich is a prime example of an abortionist; it’s what he did for a living and what he was noted for. It’s not as if (to my knowledge) he was also a world-renowned stamp collector or an innovative breakdancer too. So when we say Ulrich serves as an example of an abortionist, I think it is justified, even with the acknowledged caveat that obviously he doesn’t represent all abortionists.

Jim Jones, on the other hand, represents lots of different things, none of which seems to dwarf the others in importance in the make up of his character: radical leftist, cult leader, political boss, sexual libertine, etc. He was truly an all-around kook and to just pick one of those categories doesn’t work in the same way that it does for Ulrich.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  52. @52 Yes.

The connection is that Dana is using this one person to imply that this is what Democrats (as a substitute for pro-choice, which would be the more properly intended target here) want.

Third trimester abortions are a result of something going very very wrong. Women don’t wait 7/8/9 months and then have an abortion just for giggles. Implying that they do is fearmongering and propaganda.

    Nic (896fdf)

  53. @55 I’m sure that Ulrich did other things in his life. Jim Jones is famous as a religious cult leader, regardless of what else he did. (Almost) nobody using him as an example would use him as a radical leftist or sexual libertine, they’d use him as a religious cult leader. But if Jim Jones won’t satisfy, there are several Fundamentalist Mormon leaders and Catholic Priests who were/are famously pedophiles and thus you could generalize that religion is evil and run by pedophiles. (which, obviously, no.)

    Nic (896fdf)

  54. Now more than ever, the theocratic authoritarian regime needs to get spanked.

Agreed, but a massive attack on their centrifuges would be a better idea. Disproportional response is the way to keep them honest.

  55. 44 – A good laugh, Col.

    mg (8cbc69)

  56. Abortionists are more comparable to Jeffrey Dahmer and John Gacy who combined murder with sexual perversion, and I have no problem comparing them with pederast priests, either, who likewise turn their perverted urges to little boys, destroying their innocence even though they don’t take their lives, and I am using the term “perversion” advisedly because abortions and homosexual pederasty are both perversions of the procreative instinct.

    nk (dbc370)

  57. TL;DR All abortionists are like all serial killers and all pedophiles.

    nk (dbc370)

  58. @61 and @62 nk, you also missed my point. Just because 1 priest is terrible doesn’t make all religion everywhere terrible.

You believe that doctors who facilitate abortions and women who get them are murderers, campaign to give them the death penalty, but that has been a very unpopular opinion in this country, even when abortion itself was illegal.

(I would also like to note that pedophile priests abused girls too, we just talk about the boys more.)

    Nic (896fdf)

  59. I don’t think so, Nic. It was your comparison which was faulty. “All religion everywhere” is not comparable to “all abortion everywhere”. It is comparable to “all medicine everywhere”. And to “all sex everywhere”, why not? Where would we be without it?

Very few doctors perform abortions, just as very few people, priests included, molest children (or rape adults for that matter), and even fewer people are serial killers or mass murderers. Hmm?

    nk (dbc370)

  60. Not “all abortion everywhere” everyone pro-choice everywhere.

More than you think perform medical abortions. Planned Parenthood just happens to be obvious.

    Nic (896fdf)

  61. The Talking Heads were one of the most influential bands of the 80s. I saw them perform at an outdoor concert on Auditorium Shores in Austin on the Remain In Light tour. It was an incredible show. The only outdoor concert that could possibly surpass it was when I saw the Grateful Dead on their all acoustic tour at Manor Downs racetrack. That was life-changing, because the Dead were the best. And, yes, I dropped acid before the show. Had to, it was a rite of passage to get high on LSD and listen to the Dead play live. They had their own custom made sound system, and every note was perfect.

The Talking Heads did their best work when David Byrne collaborated with Brian Eno, as they were sort of like the American version of Roxy Music, the band that pioneered new wave. Eno, which is one spelled backwards, was a founding member. Roxy Music was huge in Europe but never really caught on in the US, except for a hit or two, like “Love Is The Drug.” Their songs were brilliantly experimental, and along with David Bowie, they ushered in a wholly new style of music.

For example, on this song from their self-titled debut album, the saxophone is haunting. It’s probably the greatest love song ever written.

  65. What’s the “that” that #70 is referring to? What comment number? #68? That;s something about a crime ring. What’s the connection to politics? I guess it was a binary choice. something like that could help exolain her election.

DFL = Democratic Farmer Labor Party (the odficial name of the Democratic Party in Minnesota, because it is the result of merger engineered, I think, by Hubert Humphrey in the 1940s,

sister bride = Ilhan Omar, who seems to have at one point created the impression that she legally married a man who was her brother. I think you said she stands in the way of something worse representing that district.

5th CD = 5th congressional district on Minnesota, simce the election of 2018 represented by Ilhan Omar. She succeeded Keith Ellison who comes from the same political group, and despite his controversial reputation, was elected statewide last year to the position of Attorney General of Minnesota.

Keith Ellison had represented it since the election of 2006 so the machine he belongs to is well entrenched.

Great bands (and shows) I saw that come to mind: Allman Bros., Cream (Spirit opened), Love (Arthur Lee), Canned Heat, Little Feat (many shows with Lowell George), Yes, Bowie (March of ‘73 Ziggy and then “thin white duke in Feb ‘76) Devo (always fun), Tom Petty. Most accomplished musicians: Mahavishnu Orchestra… they were overwhelming.

  73. It seems like Donald Trump has caused people in foreign countries to not think they can rely on him to keep his word.

    And that’s a good thing:

The Taliban, or whoever controls the Taliban, do not trust Donald Trump to stick to any agreement to bug out of Afghanistan and they want any agreement signed and witnessed by the foreign ministers of several countries, including Russia. They also want Qater to announce the agreement before there’s any meeting at Camp David.

    https://nypost.com/2019/09/13/taliban-visits-moscow-days-after-trump-says-talks-with-group-are-dead/

Russian state news agency Tass cited the Taliban’s Qatar-based spokesman Suhail Shaheen as saying the delegation had held consultations with Zamir Kabulov, President Vladimir Putin’s envoy for Afghanistan…

Shaheen told the Taliban’s official website on Tuesday that the group was still communicating with US negotiators, at least to find out what to do next.

he Taliban shura, or leadership council, opposed its negotiators going to Camp David and admonished those who had accepted U.S. peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad’s invitation that was extended at the end of August.

Shaheen was quoted on the website as saying the Camp David visit was delayed, saying the Taliban wanted the agreement signed and witnessed by foreign ministers of several countries, including Russia. He said Taliban also wanted Qatar to announce the agreement before any Camp David meeting.

The part about Qatar, came out before.

The Friday before the meeting was abruotly cancelled by President Trump, the Taliban also said that they did the car bombing in order to strengthen their negotiating position. Probably not the exact reason, but a cover story, but this turned Trump against the meeting.

  99. re: John Bolton vs Donald Trump dispute

There was an Op-ed article Friday in the New York Daily News by a woman who worked three separate times for Donald Trump.

She says that Donald Trump had a longstanding habit, during his business career, of claiming that people who quit had actually been fired.

    https://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-oped-how-the-youre-fired-guy-does-it-20190912-jv5xavx77fffbb5lkypitsifgi-story.html

One day in May 2016, I came across a headline which said, in effect, that Donald Trump had “gotten rid” of me when I worked for him in construction. By then, nothing surprised me, but this was so egregious that even I was taken aback, although I knew the media outlet involved was known to be associated with spurious stories.

I was employed by Trump on three separate occasions, and each time, I terminated my employment with a voluntary resignation. Yet here was Trump advancing the line that he had fired me. I was reminded of this incident this week, when I read the dueling tweets by Trump and John Bolton as to whether he quit or was fired.

Throughout the 16-year period during which I was employed by Trump, I witnessed many occasions when Trump would try to claim to be the instigator in a conflict which resulted in someone leaving as an employee, consultant or service provider.

At the end of the article she says the sued the media outlet that said that Trump had gottten rid of her, and, in a confidential settlement, the article and any trace of it were removed from the internet. I presume the defense was that it wasn’t reckless disregard for the truth because they had a source, (Donald Trump) so it wasn’t actionable libel, but at the same time they conceded it was nonsense.

    There’s more in the article:

She tells a story of when Trump needed a lawyer for a condemnation case in California. (the first lawyer he had hired to work on this was a politician with no condemnation experience – it was disastrous and Trump in fact ACTUALLY FIRED HIM)

So anyway Trump saw an article in Vanity Fair in which he had claimed he had never lost a case. Trump told Barbara Res to hire him.

This actually did work out because the lawyer had a lot of junior attorneys who did the actual work. They were actually new to this but they were good and the lawyer also was brilliant.

But there was one little thing: This lawyer introduced Trump to a client of his to discuss an unrelated matter – and Trump then double crossed the lawyer and his client.

    The lawyer quit on him.

Trump then claimed he fired the lawyer.

And then he fired his firm, although they were millions of dollars deep in this ase. Well, he would have fired the firm, but she talked him out of it.

Trump was not the sole investor in this project – he was the developer but he was only one of a group that owned it. (evidently this was a good argument for her to make since maybe Trump wasn’t afraid of losing his own money.)

There’s another thing: Trump always wanted to be the plaintiff in a lawsuit. So whenever he saw a lawsuit coming he insisted they sue first. I don’t know if he got any legal advantages that way.

    Sammy Finkelman (8dcc71)

  101. The question of who to vote for in a presidential and many otehr elections) is whose misgovernment you consider worse. Both parties are almost committed to misgovernment, but in different matters.

That’s why little things such a tone, should not be abig consideration

There are some other points to consider:

    1) Not all Democrats would institute misgovernment in the same way, or with the same intensity. There are differences between them, although you may need to really examine things to tell who’s going to do what. It is almost like reading ebtween the lines.

    2) Democrats tend to entrench their misgovernment more than Republicans, while Republicans don’t institutionalize most things the same way.

    3) Some of the proposed misgovernment is unlikely to become law.

    Sammy Finkelman (8dcc71)

  102. It’s something of a scam, but the law is both vague and inhumane, not to mention economically nonsentical and damaging.

Trump now wants to end temporary protected status, thus throwing construction in the Washington D.C. area (where most employees are legal) into chaos. In other places, particularly with restaurants, he wants to enforce the law, thus damaging the economy. Never a consideration of changibg the law or what makes sense.

    Sammy Finkelman (8dcc71)

  103. Trump is operating under an assumption that all (or almost all) immigration is harmful to the people already in the United States. By the same token, you can probably “prove” that (nearly) all births, with few exceptions, also are damaging.

    Sammy Finkelman (8dcc71)

  104. 110:

Perhaps if TPS wasn’t seemingly always converted into “Permanent protected Status.” With libs, media and “activists” baying in outrage, when we ask people who have been here 10+ years, to hoof it on home. instead they behave like Like guests that were supposed to “get it” and go home sometime, but intend to stay.

Perhaps if the impression wasn’t that TPS has become just another way to dodge immigration law.

Add the fact that kids born here are US citizens per some USSC case I have not read–and one can see that TPS has become a touchy issue. The Usual Suspects want it to be Temporary in name only.

  107. I think you could make a statistical case the abortion providers are more likely to be mentally unstable and do horrific things than legal rifle owners are.

There were 1671 abortion providers in 2014 which would have included Gosnell and Klopfer and those two did thousands of strange illegals deeds before, during, after their killings. Those are the two we know of. 2 out of 1671 isn’t the bad stat. Its the body of work of those two, thousands of cruelties, mishandling the dead, etc.
Was abortion on demand worth these ghouls? Statistically speaking Klopfer alone tags 1.5 or so criminal acts spread over the 1671 providers.

There are about 150M legal gun owners in the USA. There are about 9 gun related homicides per 100,000 residents in the USA. About 50% of those are with illegally possessed weapons, A handgun is used 19X more than a rifle. So death by rifle is about .6 per 100,000 even with the mass shootings. To keep up with Klopfer and Gosnell, gun owners would have to commit 225 million crimes annually with their guns.

But the geniuses running for President 2020 on the Democrats side want to confiscate rifles and continue to pay for providers like Gosnell and Klopfer.

…After weighing the Trump administration information, Saudi Arabia announced that it was going to invite United Nations experts to come investigate the attacks, a decision likely to prolong the debate over any military response. Saudi Arabia said it would wait for the results of any such investigation before deciding how to respond.

I guess like the world acted after the death of Jamal Khashoggi.

The position of Iran is that it was Yemen, and that yemen was defending itself. Many U.S. officals are afraid of a wider war. Trump won’tstart anything without the consent of saudi Arabia. Justin Amash says he needs Congress.

Under the War Powers Act, which all presidents have said is unconstitutional, a president has 60 days to act.

Declaring war kicks anumber os statutes into action but does nothing else. It’s a legal action. The problems that come from home, we need — we have one school psychologist for every 1,500 kids in America today. It’s crazy. The teachers are — I’m married to a teacher. My deceased wife is a teacher. They have every problem coming to them. We have — make sure that every single child does, in fact, have 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds go to school. School. Not daycare. School. We bring social workers in to homes and parents to help them deal with how to raise their children. It’s not want they don’t want to help. They don’t — they don’t know quite what to do. Play the radio, make sure the television — excuse me, make sure you have the record player on at night, the — the — make sure that kids hear words. A kid coming from a very poor school — a very poor background will hear 4 million words fewer spoken by the time they get there.

First, that word salad ought to cast doubt on the theory that the number of words a pre-schooler hears is what matters. Imagine playing CDs of Biden speeches to your baby to give him a boost in life. I’m thinking quality matters, not just quantity. And doesn’t calm quiet benefit the child too? I can’t believe that filling the air with chattering recordings is good for the young brain! I’m just going to guess that the studies of child development are looking at caregivers speaking to the child in person and saying words of substance that have to do with understanding the world around him and interacting with people who are looking him in the face. ….

  125. Even if it is conclusively proven that the drones/ballistic missiles was launched from Iran… Trump still needs Congressional approval for any military engagements.

Just like Clinton did in Bosnia (he asked, got rejected) or Hillary Obama did in Libya (didn’t bother to ask).

Congress can refuse to pay for the war of course, but that leaves soldiers in harms way with no bullets. This was last done in VietNam, at the end.

  127. Not sure what that means. It might mean bigger sellers or sellers who sell at a higher price.

Amazon sells its own products now that compete with other vendors. Presumably they make a bigger markup.

  129. #138: I note that AR-15s are still legal in CA, after a fashion, but the registration law for “assault weapons” hasn’t been very successful.

If Beto & co really want to get rid of these guns, they WILL have to go door-to-door and rip up everyone’s floorboards and attics.

  132. I found this today at Instapundit.
    https://pagetwo.completecolorado.com/2019/09/16/stooksberry-research-refutes-assault-weapon-ban-buybacks/

The writer has done the homework I did not.
Cites FBI figures claiming all rifles account for 340 homicides a year.
Also cites NYT saying that AR15’s account for 15 deaths a year avg. (The writer gives perspective to this number by noting 13 people die each year in the USA when vending machines fall on them)

I guess Beto’s rationale is that he knows there is a needle in the haystack of 8M AR owners. Rather than invent a magnet to find the needle, Beto’s solution is to burn all the hay?
