Feuding Leaders: Brazil’s President Publicly Insults Macron’s Wife’s Appearance
[guest post by Dana]
[Ed. From my soapbox: One thing I have always hated about women in the political spotlight is the continual circling of sharks attacking them about things that shouldn’t really matter. This happens whether the woman is the actual politician, or the spouse of a prominent politician. First line of attack is her physical appearance: age spots on her face, crow’s feet, bags under her eyes, helmet hair, a body that has clearly been lived in, a few extra pounds, crepe paper skin, too much make-up you’re-not-fooling-anyone, not enough make-up OMG GOD, SLAP SOME LIPSTICK ON THAT PIG, etc. Next line of attack is her sartorial selection: skirt too short, too long, too much cleavage showing, heels too high, heels too low, color of dress washes her out, color too bold for her age OMG WHAT WAS SHE THINKING! And so it goes. It’s an endless opportunity for journalists and commentators to use their platforms and publicly slice and dice a woman. The cruelty of it is underscored by their male counterparts about whom no one on earth cares what they’re wearing or whether they’ve got “laugh lines”. Well, with a few dumb exceptions… Ed. Steps down from soapbox.]
After the G-7 summit, Brazil’s leader, Jair Bolsonaro took a shot at France’s Emmanuel Macron because of a tiff about climate change and the fires raging in the Amazon. Unfortunately, instead of just insulting Macron himself like a real man would do, the weenie Bolsonaro was a complete jerk about it and instead, provoked Macron by insulting Mrs. Macron:
In a post on Jair Bolsonaro’s Facebook page, a user insulted the French first lady, Brigitte, by comparing her appearance with that of the Brazilian president’s wife, Michelle, implying that the younger woman was more attractive.
The supporter suggested Mr Macron was jealous, and that that was why he was “persecuting” the Brazilian leader.
Mr Bolsonaro hit “like” on the post, writing: “Don’t humiliate the guy… ha ha.”
Macron responded to the jab:
“He has made some extraordinarily rude comments about my wife.
“What can I tell you? It’s sad. It’s sad for him and for Brazilians. I think that Brazilian women are probably ashamed to read that their president has done that.”
“I think that Brazilians, a great people, are a bit ashamed of this behaviour,” the French president added. “As I have a lot of friendship and respect for the Brazilian people, I hope that they will quickly have a president who is up to the job.”
Here’s a brief overview of what’s behind the spat between the two leaders:
[Macron] claimed Mr Bolsonaro had gone back on a promise to halt deforestation, threatening to no longer support the EU’s Mercosur deal with Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay….Mr Bolsonaro had missed a scheduled meeting with the French foreign minister in favour of a barber’s appointment, Mr Macron added…Mr Macron has been highly critical of Brazil’s handling of the crisis, tweeting: “Our house is literally on fire”…[T]he French overseas territory of French Guiana on the northern coast of South America is France’s biggest land border, so the Amazon was particularly important for France because “we are there”…
Mr Bolsonaro attacked Macron for having a “colonialist mentality”, tweeting that “ludicrous and unnecessary attacks on the Amazon” were unacceptable….Brazilian politicians, including Mr Bolsonaro’s son Eduardo, have taken pot shots at Mr Macron, with education minister Abraham Weintraub calling him “an opportunist idiot” and “a president without character” in a flurry of tweets…Eduardo Bolsonaro, who is tipped to be the next ambassador to Washington, on Friday retweeted a video showing violent yellow-vest protests in France headlined “Macron is an idiot”.
And demonstrating what a certified ass he is, Bolsonaro said this in 2017:
“I have five children. Four are men, and then in a moment of weakness the fifth came out a girl.”
Anyway, this got me thinking…
Trump and Bolsonaro, two peas in a pod, am I right??

I want to see Macron slap Bolsonaro with a glove and challenge him to a duel.

Dana (fdf131) — 8/26/2019 @ 6:02 pmSpeaking of Brazil…..
Suddenly everyone is concerned about fires in the Amazon (the forest, not the online shopping company). There are all sorts of scary stories being published, and even the G7 leaders (minus Trump) met to discuss what to do about it.
Last year there were bigger fires in the Amazon and no coverage at all. What changed?
This year there’s a conservative government in Brazil.

You mean Macron used Bolsonaro’s wife in a campaign ad, making Macron’s wife fair game?

Woke heads must be ‘sploding all over the Western world. On the one hand you’ve got the insensitive sexist jerk who apparently isn’t willing to sing from the hymnbook of extreme climate change, but on the other hand you have the fey Euroweenie who is basing his argument on — wait for it — his country’s history of colonialism in countries of indigenous brown people. Figure that one out, progressives.
JVW (54fd0b) — 8/26/2019 @ 6:45 pmSuper easy, barely an inconvenience, macron is being selfless and bolsanaro evil, forget the burnt smell of yellow vest protests.

You mean old men claiming accolades for the young and beautiful THIRD wives they bought, one with his daddy’s money (that would be Trump) and one with his government’s money (that would be Bolsonaro)? (In case you didn’t know, the current Frau Bolsonaro is what Kamala Harris could have been if Willie Brown had married her.)
nk (dbc370) — 8/26/2019 @ 8:30 pmUh huh. In this context, to which accolades do you refer?

And Trump made an investment worthy of being the First Lady.
Kamala, of course made the same cardinal mistake that Hillary did-thinking she didn’t owe her political life to the man in it, and could appeal to people on her own. Men with vision and foresight know to stay far away from them!
Politics is show business for ugly people. But only the ugly people that are actually good at it get a pass. A Macron is bad enough, but at least we didn’t have to endure a Jeb!
Such crimes against aesthetics are those MOST likely to inspire mass shooters, for what shall a man live for if beauty and truth itself is hated, despised, and driven out of public view for the sake of the perpetually aggrieved?

The status of French Guiana (and some other overseas territories, like Mauritius) was converted from colony to an overseas department of metropolitan France – in other words it’s sort of like Hawaii.
Note: Wikipedia says it has been a French Department since 1946. It was so previously also, from 1797 till the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. It was mostly a penal colony after that.
It surprised me to hear that the land border of French Guiana, or whatever it’s called now, with Brazil, is longer than that of France with any other country. It’s hard to tell scale on amap because maps of South America and of Europe are shown separately, but French Guiana appears to be smaller than France – the only thing is, France in Europe has borders with several different countries but in South America it is Brazil on both the east and south, so it could be longer than France’s border with any individual country, although there it’s probably just about all jungle and very lightly populated. (Surinam, former Dutch Guiana, is to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the north.)
The Wikipedia article says it is more than one-seventh the size of Metropolitan France and it’s only got abut 300,000 people, half of whom live in Cayenne, the capital, or its metropolitan area. 98.9% of it is covered by forest, most of that tropical rainforest (Wikipedia doesn’t lke the word jungle.) There’s a natonal park that occupies 41% of French Guiana’s territory, which the wikipedia article descrobes as the largest park in the European Union.
Its currency in the Euro, its official language is French, although most people speak their own langagages, the most important of which is French Guianese Creole, the European Space agency has a launch site there, and it technically has the highest per capita GDP in South America. Its; ahd its conflicts with Brazil, the most importtant over illegal gold mining in its interior, and a limited amount of (partially illegal) immigration.

That said, the Amazon basin fires are one big, fat media overhype, and it’s probably being done because a conservative like Bolsonaro is in power. If I were Bolsonaro, I’d insult Macron, not his wife. Some excerpts:
The Amazon is not the “lungs” of the world.
CNN overhype.
The Amazon forests are not on fire.
The deforestation is not as dire as hyped.
The overhype is so bad that it can be called FakeNews.

Aside from the insatiable sexual appetite wealth and power sets off in the third wife until after the nuptials (regardless to any pre-nuptial agreement), the bragging rights persist until the media tires of the sport.
steveg (354706) — 8/27/2019 @ 9:07 pmMacron is at a disadvantage here of his own making. Everyone else in the slag fest traded in the old model for a new, faster, sleeker model. Macron traded for an old Citreon H van

I actually like how Mrs. Macron looks.

Macron met his wife when he was sixteen and she was his teacher. He kissed her on the school auditorium stage, in front of everybody, and told her, in front of everybody, that someday he was going to marry her. And he did. But it took a while. Or so they tell the story.
