Paging Rep. Rashida Tlaib!

Filed under: General — Dana @ 9:44 am

[guest post by Dana]

This morning I am wondering what Rep. Tlaib thinks about Palestine’s efforts to silence a specific community by making them live under oppressive conditions as if they were criminals, which clearly runs counter to everything Rep. Tlaib believes in–fighting against racism, oppression & injustice:

Palestinian Authority police have banned a Palestinian LGBT rights group from organizing any activities in the West Bank and threatened to arrest them, saying such activities are contrary to the “values of Palestinian society.”

In a statement Saturday, police spokesman Louay Arzeikat said events such as those organized by the group al-Qaws “go against and infringe upon the higher principles and values of Palestinian society.”

Arzeikat also charged that “suspicious parties” were trying to “sow discord and undermine Palestinian society’s peaceful state of affairs” and asserted that the police would pursue al-Qaws’s staff and turn them over to judicial authorities if it successfully collars them.

[…]

While there are no PA laws on the books that ban homosexual acts, the Palestinian LGBT community largely exists underground due to familial, religious and government repression, a source familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Times of Israel.

P.S.

Israel is one of the most inclusive societies in the world for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. As early as the 1960s, same-sex couples lived in Israel freely and without fear of persecution. The Gay Revolution of the 1980s brought Israel’s LGBT community full recognition of their human rights, as well as legal and social equality to individuals and families. Today, Tel Aviv is considered the “Gay Capital of the Middle East”, thanks to its thriving and supported LGBT community, playing an integral role in Israeli society.

  1. I’m looking forward to Tlaib’s public denouncement of this decision.

  2. In Leftspeak, pointing out that Israel does no persecute gays and that Palestinians do is to commit the crime of pinkwashing.

    Gaza: Not free
    Israel: Free
But anti-Semites like Ms. Tlaib blame it all on Israel. She is not a great American, a hypocrite when it comes to American values.

  5. In large areas of the US, it’s been less than 20 years since homosexual acts were treated as crimes.

Or to quote a great man: “Are we so innocent?”

Yes, but it’s been a while since we imposed the death penalty for sodomy

“If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”
    – Leviticus 20:13

What do the Israeli religious parties have to say about this, I wonder?

    Dave (1bb933)

  9. Dana, you know the truth of it. You bring this up, and get:

    “That’s different!”

When you ask why it is different:

    “Because shut up!”

It’s all about The Narrative, sadly. Nothing else.

What do the Israeli religious parties have to say about this, I wonder? </blockquote. They don't seem to complain about the public relations efforts, maybe because lives might depend on it, so if the national defense experts thinks this helps, OK; but they do complain about "gay pride" parades and flags.

  11. They also do not try to enforce religious law on a personal level on people. They do in the public sphere, which operates most for things that have other reasons for it, like limited selling of pig meat and bread on Passover, (the Jewish state should look Jewish – for the same reason they don’t want Ekl Al to operate on Shabbat or railroad work to be done when there’s no traffic) or business closings on Saturday (unfair competition and forcing smaller business owners not to have a day off) or public transpprtation on Saturday (disturbance of peace maybe, although that maybe rests mostly on he principle of maintaining the status quo as of 1948)

They also are against anythng that could impact their communities.

In the past also, autopsies have been a controversy, and the possible disturbance of ancient Jewish graves.

    Sammy Finkelman (6a3404)

  12. What may oprevent the formation of a government after the election is the issue of the draft, where the status quo was disturbed by the Israeli Supreme Court several years ago.

    Sammy Finkelman (6a3404)

  13. When I visited Jerusalem in 1997, I recall reading (in an Israeli tourist publications) that women wearing shorts, or skirts that exposed their legs, were at risk of being physically attacked if they ventured into the wrong Orthodox neighborhood.

And indeed, concerning gays, this Israeli site for tourists notes:

It is worth bearing in mind that due to the more religiously-inclined nature of the city, Jerusalem is not as liberal as Tel Aviv certainly, and perhaps some other Israeli cities. Therefore, it is advisable to be more discreet as a gay traveler in Jerusalem, especially in Orthodox religious areas.

It’s admirable that Israeli law mandates protection for everyone, despite (perhaps) some enclaves of intolerance.

    Dave (1bb933)

  14. Only religious marriages and divorces (any religion, but there is an established Jewish estabihsment and court system) can be performed in Israel, but marriages performed in other countries (like in Cyprus) are recognized civilly.

That could be tre, but that;s operating outside the law, and maybe on;y happens when someone has stirred up something. Theer was aproblem is a city called beth Shemesh.

  16. “In large areas of the US, it’s been less than 20 years since homosexual acts were treated as crimes.

Or to quote a great man: “Are we so innocent?””

Twenty years ago, a prosecutor who charged a pair of consenting adults with sodomy was likely to be a laughingstock. Thirty years ago? Maybe. Forty years ago, yes. Not in New York, but in Alabama? Sure.

None of that changes that in much of the Islamic world the debate is not “Should Gays be allowed to marry?” or “Should sodomy between consenting adults be legal?” but “Should we kill Homosexuals by throwing them off of the Mosque, boy burning them alive, or by stoning?”

The “We used to be just as bad” argument seldom holds water, no matter how goddamned fond the Left is of it. Yes, we once kept slaves. So did every society and culture on earth, until the 18th Century. Communist countries almost without exception STILL use slave labor. And Islamic countries DON’T practice slavery only to the extent that they fear the reaction of the West.

The Palestinian Authorities are a bunch of murdering bastards. If the Israelis were even CLOSE to that bad, they would have carpet bombed the entire Palestinian territory decades ago.

  25. While Rashida Tlaib tweeted on Friday that “I planned to hold meetings with members of the Knesset (both Jewish and Arab) along with Israeli security officials.” that wasn’t on her public schedule.

    http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/267563

Omar and Tlaib’s trip was to start with a lunch with staff at the US Embassy in Israel. From there they were going to meet with UNRWA, the United Nations agency that aids “Palestinian refugees” in perpetuating their status, before moving on to meetings in Jerusalem’s Arab neighborhoods.

On the second day, Omar and Tlaib planned to visit Jerusalem’s holy sites, including the Western Wall and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. They additionally planned to visit the Al-Aqsa mosque, which is located at the Temple Mount, a Jewish holy site which Muslims claim is theirs. The remainder of the trip took them to meetings and tours the cities of Hevron, Bethlehem and Ramallah, including at a “refugee camp.”

Israel is becoming a little bit of a partisan issue, and it’s being exacerbated by the Palestinian Authority. Abbas quietly refused to meet with a Republican Congressional delegation. (or avoided meeting them)

    https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/after-meeting-democrats-in-ramallah-abbas-reportedly-snubs-visiting-republicans-1.7683860

This is probably a quid pro quo with some Democrats.

  26. The blood libel, like other Arab anti-Israel propaganda, is not supposed to circulate where it will not be believed, but ehere it might be believed, the enemies of Israel find it useful and they use it because they have no imagination. Anti-semitism is closely associated with plagiarism.
