Man. How did the New York Times botch this so badly?
Correction: Jussie Smollett is not a beloved Doonesbury character, as this story originally reported, but rather an actor on “Empire.” Also, he told police he had been confronted by homophobic racist Trumpers — not, as the article said in the initial version, by a herd of tutu-wearing sheep bleating racist chants.

Police said a female attorney was present with Smollett when he turned himself in and his lawyers Todd Pugh and Victor Henderson were not present at the time.

From the time I was six until about 16, the world of music transformed like no other time in history.
Our house was filled w Beatles, Beach Boys, Stones, Motown, Hendrix, Monkees etc., Everything from Miles Davis (Pop loves jazz) to Herb Alpert to Zepplin and Bowie.
One thing that really brings those early 60s SoCal days back is the Stones at the SM Civic In 64 doing Around And Around.

That gets things 180 degrees wrong.
Rush Limbaugh today did conncede the possibility that avoiding a camera was deliberate, but I don’t think he understood the reason:
Smolette would not get to do a second take.
And this was a stunt. It’s one thing to be interviewed on Giid Morning America; it’s another thing to do a stunt.
This way he didn’t even need to stage the stunt at all. He didn’t even need any sound effects. (He could have had some: It seems like he was speaking on the phone with his music manager, who backed him up on his story, claiming to have heard some of it, but I think he’s lying too.)
With no camaeras focused on the action while it was haeppening, it could all be done very slowly or even not at all. And he could want home with the noose around his neck. Or put it on at home. He only called 911 from home.

It was highly unlikely, for half a dozen reasons, including that it was 10 degreees below zero Fahrenheit. What we supposed to imagine? That they were secretly trailing him? Or taht they knew where he custoimarily went and thoght that neither rain, snow or gloom of night woukld stay him from his suual rounds? If they were from Chicago wouldn’t they pick another night?
Smolett never expected this to be traced to the two men who actually were involved, and he didn’t have any fallback plan if it was. So what did cutting them a $3,500 check add? He also paid for their hotel rooms in Chicago. That check was not for “mugging supplies” by the way, as one joke by Charles Barkley (or Shaq?) had it. For that, he gave them a $100 bill. That was extra. He also had them wear gloves so as not to leave any fingerprints, or DNA.
After it was exposed, then he came up wiutha fallback plan: People close to him did it. But he didn’t have this idea at the start. He counted on the “crime” never being solved. Then you could really make hay with it.

That’s still consistent with NOT wanting to get this on videotape. Especially since he didn’t want the perpetrators to get caught. He probably didn’t explain why just there. The camera may have been mentioned to them as a landmark.
Smolett didn’t even file a formal complaint until police told him they had a suspect – when they told him who the two suspects were, he didn’t wnat to do it.

Jussie Smolett is from California, and his mother is friends with Angela Davis. I don’t yet know of any connection to Kamala Harris, but that’s the way to bet.
There is probably also some connection to Cory Booker, but this could have happened any number of ways. They both supported an anti-lynching bill, and they both made similar tweets when the started. I would go with Kamala Harris, with Cory Booker (who likes to copy things) being roped in as a supporting player. And/or possibly having his thunder captured. The same political operatives could have affected both Senators, but he/they could ahve bene much closer to one than the other..
It wasn’t done to raise Jussie Smolett’s pay. He was getting a lot. Although you could say maybe it was done to raise his profile. Or avoid having the series cancelled.

This likely would have been an assortment including off-duty personnel, relatives, really any 6 you could think off and that was available to be in a lineup at a time Smollett was called in to identify. But to expose his desperation even further, you could have included some minor celebrities that may be known to Chicagoans but not known to a transplanted black Californian.
