Can A “Top Cop” Effectively Lead The Country If She Hollers ‘Hate Crime’ Before An Investigation Has Been Completed? (UPDATE ADDED)

Filed under: General — Dana @ 7:32 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Here we go. I haven’t posted about this subject for obvious reasons. The main one being that the Jussie Smollett case is still being investigated and we don’t know for sure what happened. So while I’ve stayed on the sidelines keeping my mouth shut and not jumping to conclusions, the leading Democratic candidates didn’t realize that they too should show some restraint and patience and wait for an investigation before spouting off. Obviously the reason we wait is because investigations into high-voltage incidents like the alleged Smollett attack can reveal that what the situation appeared to be, was in fact something very different. No caution for this group though. Heck no. They happily jumped into the sordid mess with both feet in an effort to advance themselves like the grifters they are. As they self-righteously beat their chests in angry indignation at the horrible stench of assumed racist hate wafting through the air, they made their assumptions based on seemingly little more than an initial report of the incident. Certainly they reacted before there was even an opportunity for an investigation to take place. (Date of alleged incident: Jan. 29. Date of the three candidates’ tweets: Jan. 29.) But sadly, the assumptions they made were necessary if they were going to out-woke the competition. And yet, while grifters are gonna grift, when a candidate for the highest office in the land, who spent six years as “California’s top cop,” still cannot resist the urge to make hasty, premature accusations about an alleged hate crime, as well as effectively announcing that she *knew* what happened – even before any investigation – then the seriousness of that individual who hopes to become the next Commander in Chief should be in question. I’m looking at you, Kamala Harris. It’s almost as if investigations, facts, and evidence are pesky mundane issues to be swatted away because girl wants to become the president, and pushing one’s cause, no matter how premature or inaccurate, is the path to a needed win. As caution and prudence go out the window, a foolish mentality of “strike while the iron is hot or forever lose that woke opportunity” becomes the guiding light for the self-proclaimed “top cop”. Maybe it’s just me, but shouldn’t we expect more of a presidential candidate who has been a state’s chief law enforcement officer and top lawyer for six years in one of the nation’s most populous states?

Anyway, the police want to interview Smollett again after two brothers who were interviewed by investigators claimed that they were paid [by Smollett] to take part in a staged attack.

P.S. No response from Kamala Harris or Kirsten Gillibrand on the changing tide of the story. Cory Booker, while not acknowledging his earlier rush to judgment, said today that he is now going to withhold from commenting further “until all the information actually comes out from on the record sources.”

Gosh, what a novel idea.

UPDATE: This is Kamala Harris responding to a reporter’s inquiry today about whether she had been too quick to condemn the “attack” before knowing all the facts:

“I think that once the investigation is concluded, then we should all comment, but I’m not going to comment until I know the outcome of that investigation.”

Uh, too late. You already did. Remember??? Unfortunately, the reporter did not hold her feet to the fire and point out that, of all people, the former San Francisco District Attorney and Attorney General should have known to use a prudent restraint before claiming that a “modern day lynching” had taken place prior to any investigation having been completed.

  1. Hello.

    Dana (023079)

  2. I just posted about an 11 year old boy arrested in lakeland florida for not standing up for the pledge of allegiance because trump is president. I just found out the sub. teacher is a cuban trump supporter who told the black boy to move back to africa if he doesn’t like it here. when the boy answered I was brought here the boy was handcuffed and arrested by the police in front of his classmates and taken to jail.

  19. There’s a commander-in-chief who hollers about all kinds of half-baked things before an investigation has been completed, and a constitutional majority already decided that they were okay with a person who does that kind of thing (remember when he said the election was rigged based on zero evidence?). Therefore, it does not disqualify Democrat candidates from doing the same. Just trying to apply a single standard here.

    Paul Montagu (0eb929)

  20. From the link Dana provided with regards to Cory Booker:

“We know in America that bigoted and biased attacks are on the rise in a serious way,” Booker said. “We actually even know in this country that since 9/11 a majority of the terrorist attacks on our soil have been right wing terrorist attacks, a majority of them white supremacist attacks.”

He reiterated his point in response to another question, continuing to call for further action to combat bigotry and violence.

“We have seen painful realities surge in our country, a rise in anti-Semitism, anti-Islamic attacks,” Booker said. “We’re seeing just a vicious, horrific, cruel violence that’s motivated by bias and hate. We need to do more to protect all Americans and make sure all neighborhoods and communities are safe.”

I’m too lazy to look it up right now, but I don’t think Booker is anywhere near correct with respect to the idea that the “majority” of “terrorist” attacks are by white supremacists. For one thing, who is he counting as a white supremacist? Jared Loughner (Tucson shooter of Gabby Giffords) who was just a garden-variety nutcase? Adam Lanza (Sandy Hook) who suffered from Asperger’s Syndrome, OCD, and depression? Nikolas Cruz (Stoneman Douglas High) who spent years under psychiatric observation and has a rather unlikely white supremacist name, even if he did apparently hate blacks, Jews, and Mexicans? I think like so much dealing with Cory Booker, he’s just making stuff up as he goes.

And even if Booker didn’t mean to refer mass killings (though what else could he mean by “terrorists attacks”?), I think the statistics from a few years ago are still valid which indicate that black-on-white violence is, proportionate to the respective populations, eight times more prevalent than white-on-black violence. Is this the kind of bullstuff that Booker is going to be bringing for the next 15 months as he makes his Presidential run? What a tool.

    Munroe (e0f980)

  26. Thanks Paul Montagu. I checked the GAO report linked in the Fact Check, and as typical with government work it is largely skewed to obtain the desired political conclusion. For instance, they characterize the guy who shot to death six people at the Lockheed Martin plant in Mississippi in 2003 as a white supremacist, though authorities have disputed that race was a driving factor. I’m guessing that there are a whole bunch of other questionable conclusions that the GAO people have drawn in order to push the narrative that white supremacists are out there gunning everyone down.

And they seem to take every peckerwood loser who kills someone (many times a sex offender) and label him a white supremacist, but they don’t pay any attention to minority gangs and the number of killings for which they are responsible. Many of the non-white gangs are supremacists gang too, whether it’s the Latin Kings, the Crips, the Mexican Mafia, etc, and their victims are quite often people outside their own race.

So we’re back to where we started: Booker is a horse’s ass.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  27. Someone posted a link to a story referencing CNN saying Smollett had made up the hate incident and Twitter blocked it as not conforming to community standards.

Slight correction, harkin: It appears that it’s Facebook (not Twitter) that censored the Smollett hate crimes story. I know, I know: six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Except that the Latin Kings and Mexican Mafia were not considered non-white according to the DOJ under Obama, when compiling crime statistics. Hispanics were conveniently lumped in with whites.

    Munroe (b11042)

  30. Many of the non-white gangs are supremacists gang too, whether it’s the Latin Kings, the Crips, the Mexican Mafia, etc, and their victims are quite often people outside their own race.

That’s true, but murders emanating from gang activity aren’t considered terrorism under the US Code. The fact that a majority of murders by terrorist attacks come from militant Islamists–even though less than a quarter of terrorist attacks have been executed by militant Islamists–is all the more reason DHS should focus more of their resources on jihadists instead of neo-Nazis and white supremacists, which really just further affirms that Booker is indeed a horse’s ass.

    Paul Montagu (0eb929)

  31. No because that appendage has a purpose. Considering tbone is too ask Edwin starrs question.

    Narciso (00a309)

  32. I have a nearly perfect record on these. Remember the McCain worker who claimed a black Obama supporter attacked her? I called that on day one – 90% chance it was faked, I said. The anthrax guy was real, I said. So I’m right a lot – and not because I’m a genius, I just don’t let the politics get in the way. Most people can pattern-recognize.

There’s no excuse for an experienced law enforcement to support such nonsense unless they are bad at evaluating evidence or don’t care. I’ve seen this on every level, including locally.

Everything is probabilistic – Jussie Smollett could still end up innocent of everything and have been telling the truth. But that was unlikely at the start and vanishingly unlikely now. There are certain obvious tells in these situations. Someone should make a list…

They know their city. They knew how unlikely the story was. Even David Axelrod, Obama’s eminence gris, hardly a Trumper, who deserves the title “veteran newsman”, had this to say:

The racist/homophobic attack @JussieSmollett alleged was horrific. But if this story turns out to be a hoax, orchestrated by Smollett to boost his career, he will have cynically betrayed supporters across the country and slandered a great city.

“…..The unintended consequence has been to make the media look ridiculous as it keeps rushing to judgement and falling for hoax stories.

If we are to beat back the charges of “fake news” and defend the institution of journalism, we must defend those other old-fashioned ideas and institutions like the presumption of innocence, due process, and, yes, maybe even trying to avoid political bias.

It is telling that today’s highest-profile hoaxes—a measure that, of course, reflects what hoaxes are accepted at first and rewarded with media attention —are about appropriating someone else’s victim status, not stealing their valor. Never mind the glory of heroes, experts, or champions, the desire for sympathy—and the moral authority that comes from being victimized—has replaced the desire for admiration or respect for some act of heroism.

I’m not sure what exactly that says about a society, but it can’t be good.”

  56. Can Empire‘s filming permits be revoked and as an abject lesson, should any of the less-wrong lizards (as Narciso would put it), get into the mayorship?

    No.

You’re asking the wrong question, anyway. The correct question is: Will Kimberly M. Fox, the Cook County State’s Attorney, be more scared of the Chicago PD than she is of her suck-ass liberal constituency and not throw the case against Smollett?

  65. I think you would have people more in fear of live fire from the upper floors. On Michigan Ave and other downtown streets, you have yoots reaching into open windows and grabbing stuff when traffic is stopped. Cabrini green, as dangerous as it was, was a geographic blip compared to the south side Robert Taylor homes which ran along the Dan Ryan expressway for 3 plus miles (that may have been the thing you talking about, especially if there was diversion of traffic to the side streets) The Taylors at the peak of their infamy comprised the 2nd largest city in Illinois.

Then the Smollett case implodes

    Colonel Haiku (273e2b)

  68. Fascinating how young men become kids, racist intimidation becomes innocence, if that narrative serves the Trump grievance industry.

But it’s really been a bad month for the Trump cause. Government shutdown, billions wasted, all so Pelosi can win a game of chicken. I can understand the urge to change the subject.

Another thing that just came up was that Smollett allegedly scripted out that one of them needed to be sporting a red hat, which was bought at a local store – one can only surmise that he told them to SMIRK too.

  75. (CBS) –“Empire” actor Jussie Smollett, upset after a racist letter sent to the show’s studio didn’t get a “bigger reaction,” is suspected of paying two men to attack him a week later, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the investigation.

“When the letter didn’t get enough attention, he concocted the staged attack,” a source told CBS 2 Investigator Brad Edwards. Other sources corroborated that information.

  83. BIG HAIR AND SKINNY JEANS,
    A short story by nk

There were two of them. I spotted them the minute they followed me out of the store.

I’d run low on cigarettes, so I’d driven to my local Jewel for a couple of packs. Marlboro Red. Hardpack.

Since I was there, I thought I might as well buy a couple of bags of Hershey’s Nuggets. I got three Hershey bars, too. The large 4.4 oz ones. Plain milk chocolate. I’ll always wonder if that might not have had something to do with it all.

They caught up to me just as I got to my Nissan Altima. Black guys in their twenties. Both wearing light colored skinny jeans and Canada Goose parkas. The one on the left also wore a blonde Dolly Parton wig and gold glitter eye shadow. The one on the right was Dottie West with a red wig and turquoise eye shadow.

“You’re the MAGA Trumper from the candy aisle”, Blonde Wig said. He sprayed me with Zum Patchouli Mist from a small glass spray-bottle in his right hand.

“This is ni**er fa**ot country!”, Red Wig yelled. He threw a pink feather boa around my neck.

Then they both turned away, and half-trotted, half-tiptoed to a black on gold Mini Cooper parked next to the Altima. Blonde Wig got in on the drivers side. Red Wig in the shotgun seat.

John, a Chicago PD patrolman from the 17th who moonlights as a security guard at the Jewel, ran up to me.

“I saw everything”, he said. “You want to press charges?”

I opened one of the Marlboro packs and shook out a couple of coffin nails. John took one and lighted both of us with his Zippo.

“Forget it”, I said. “Who’d believe us?”

We dragged on our smokes and watched Blonde Wig trying to back the Mini Cooper out of the parking spot.

“You ever drive a stick?”, John asked me.

“When I was a kid”, I said. “My boss at the gas station had an army surplus Jeep.”

“They can be tricky”, he said.

Blonde Wig would put the Mini Cooper in reverse and stall it. It was fascinating in a way. The engine would start, the backup lights would go on, and the engine would die. Then the backup lights would go off, the engine would would start, the backup lights would go back on, and the engine would die again.

John lighted two more of my Marlboros for us. The smell of tobacco blended in with the smell of patchouli and burnt clutch lining.

“I’ll throw that boa in the trash for you on my way back inside”, John said.

    “Thanks”, I said.

  95. we don’t know for sure what happened.

You would be oin fairly safe ground to claim it is hoax, becaus ethe very concept of people targeting black people with niooses ios a hoax.

And then we have the attackers shouting at him “This is MAGA country!” Can anyone believe that, not tehmselves, but that anyone else (in Chicago) could believe that Chicago is a pro-Trump place? Nationwide, maybe somebody could believe it took place in some precinct or neighborhood that voted for Trump.

And then they didn’t really ahrm him, buit just place anoose around his neck.

Also that the action took place off-camera. Rush Limbaugh thinks that was a (fortunate for us, because it was improbable) mistake on Jussie Smollett’s part (He thinks that he wanted video – that he wanted to be Rodney King II. But that Hussie Smolette didn’t notice taht the camersa wass pointed in the wriong direction.) But that, I think gets things completely wrong. he did notice that and picked the spot precisely because it was off camera.

It had to take place off camera, because Jussie Smollett could not effectivelly fake being attacked. Jussie Smolett would not be able to make a second take. (unless he really, really planned it and tried it in different locations, with a cameraman)

Now for other things it pays to be careful, Like Hussie Smolett hiring Clinton connected Lanny Davis as his lawyer. He probably did not hire Lanny Davis. I knew I had to check that out.

    https://www.thewrap.com/jussie-smollett-denies-hiring-defense-attorney

That leak, I think, is another hoax – on the part of the perpetrators. They wanted people to jump at “proof” of political motivation. Oh, he probably did hire somebody connected with Clinton opolitics. Just not Lanny Davis.

There was a lot of politics there. And it was probably arranged as part of the hoax. Kamala Harris didn’t even know what “she” has tweeted, and I believe that.

    Sammy Finkelman (102c75)

  96. Jussie, he be eviler than I thought. I initially opined that, as he would say, “it was a date gone bad” and he was too embarrassed to say so, but now it turns out that he also had a “racist letter” sent to himself, and it was when that didn’t get him the attention he wanted that he had the Nigerian brothers stage the fake attack. What this mean? The FBI are already investigating the letter. Jussie, he be looking at federal charges too.

And, Kimberly Foxx, the Cook County State’s Attorney, has recused herself from the case and is letting her First Assistant prosecute it. Which I kind of guessed that it was too hot a potato for her to handle.

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx on Tuesday recused herself from the investigation, and offered a one-sentence explanation via a rep: “Out of an abundance of caution, the decision to recuse herself was made to address potential questions of impartiality based upon familiarity with potential witnesses in the case.” The Chicago Tribune notes that no further information has been provided about the witnesses or Foxx’s relationship to them; the announcement came hours after the two brothers who were originally arrested in the case, Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo, spoke with prosecutors and detectives at the courthouse.

Smollett also narrated a documentary series in May 2018 called America Divided that looks at hate crimes, particularly lynching, notes the Chicago Tribune. Series director Lucian Read says that if allegations against Smollett are true, “it’s remarkable” for him to “take this truth about hate crimes and turn it into fiction like that.”

Maybe some of the cases in the documentary Smolett narrated were also fake.

It was thicslose to implicating random innocents,…

It wasn’t, but Smolett probably thought it was. he was going to file aformal complaint until he learned who the two men are.

He has now given an explanation for the $3,500 payment. he claims it was atraining fee.

And he didn’t overlook the need to explain the check payment of $3,500. The memo line reads:

    “5 week Nutrition/Workout program Don’t Go.”

That “Don’t Go” might sound like it is an ungrammatical way of referring to some kind of a cancellation fee, but his people tell TMZ that “Don’t Go” is the name of a song for which he was going to shoot a music video.. And theer’s text showing a calendar where February 23 is marked “Don’t Go.”

    https://www.tmz.com/2019/02/24/jussie-smollett-training-texts-payment-check-abel-attack/

Sources connected to Jussie say the $3,500 breakdown is as follows — $600 a week for the workout plan for 5 weeks, and $100 a week for the nutrition plan for 5 weeks.

He’s still denying everything. But he’s not speaking to many people – like the rest of the cast of Empire. Probably becasue it would be too ifficult to plausibly lie to all them. Although lawyers will tell even innocent people not to discuss the case. Except if you’re Roger Stone.
