  1. If you want context for the first clip, just pull back the time thingie to the beginning.

    Patterico (115b1f)

  2. It’s inartfully expressed, but Guiliani is correct in the context of interviews given to law enforcement agents and the use of such interviews in setting up prosecutions for or lying to investigators.

The investigators get to choose what they think the “truth” is when there is a conflict between the two statements given.

When Comey meets with Trump alone in the Oval Office, each is going to come out of that meeting with their narrative of what was said. There is no way to test one v. the other except in a contest of “credibility.”

So you are not establishing “truth” through the use of a jury process, you are establishing which person is believed by the jury.

It’s certainly possible that the more “believable” person is actually not telling the truth.

That is the context for his statement, and in that context Guiliani’s characterization is not wrong.

  3. It’s inartfully expressed,

    Ya think?

    Patterico (e66a17)

  4. Another example of truth vs truth is the climate change mess.
Science that is settled even though the results keep changing. Climate change truths from 10 years ago have been found not to be true, same will probably go for truths written and spoken about today.

Comey, McCabe, Strzok, Brennan have all claimed to have “misremembered” truths which is another way of them saying that at the time of the interview or testimony they felt they were being truthful.
Or there are the word games Hillary used “wipe the hard drive? like with a cloth?”

Or a truthful answer that can get you into trouble like lets say…. ok… ear with me
Q: were you with Mr. blah Thursday night the 29th of February?
    A: no

Questioner: Aha. You lied. We have a photo and witnesses placing you there at 7:00PM and an email from you at 6:45PM saying you will be there at 7PM

    A. I don’t understand then because when I got home the sun wasn’t down yet.

Or maybe better would be an over broad question like those they asked of Sessions about contact with Russians.
Sessions clearly was used to asking ze questions because he should of just said he talks to Russians all the time. Government work, social settings and someone is bound to have made small talk about Trumps prospects. Instead Sessions assumed context and pissed himself

  6. George Orwell (not his ghost), call your office.

In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality, was tacitly denied by their philosophy. The heresy of heresies was common sense. And what was terrifying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right. For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable…what then?

  8. Trump has been said not to pay bills for services poorly rendered (as is his right), and if so, Rudy should be working for free.

That said, I think a majority of people know exactly what Rudy meant. Muellers crew has no problem putting either a fine or a broad line on the truth and I’d assume Trumps defense lawyers would try to blur Muellers fine lines and sharpen Muellers broad lines

  29. this is an interesting discussion of how increasingly corrupt fbi butt-sniffer James Comey and gestapo slurp-boy Robert Mueller have become over the years

Hannity opened the interview with questions: “How is it all of these politicians have become filthy rich? They’re supposed to be public servants. Where does the money come from? What are the conflicts of interest?”

Hannity drew from Bruner’s new book, “James Comey’s net worth has skyrocketed 4000%. By the time he left [the Department of Justice] in 2005 and came back in 2013, [James] Comey made 6.1 million dollars after [Robert] Mueller granted his employer, Lockheed Martin – the largest contractor in history – a billion-dollar boondoggle. Under Mueller’s direction, the FBI granted multiple spy contracts to Lockheed Martin while Comey was advising them on the legality of their operations. Comey also received another six million dollars working for one of the world’s largest hedge funds and an additional $500,000 for unused vacation time.”

“Mueller cashed in, as well,” continued Hannity. “In 2013, when Comey took over the FBI while Mueller left to start consulting at a consulting firm, he made more than 3.5 million in about year giving speeches and representing clients who had previously enriched his FBI director; clients like the world’s most profitable spy corporation.”

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  30. I’m not on board with the implied (direct?) criticism of Rudy’s truth. The man is far too generous with his thoughts and he does not take care to understand that his audience is not just seasoned LE and Criminal Bar folks. They would easily and quickly get what he was saying. Heck, they all play games with “truth.” It’s their sworn duty, afterall.

No. RG’s crime is in not recognizing that the vast majority of the “truth tellers” aka the media, and a huge number of Americans are looking to discredit him and his main client at every turn and at all cost. He stepped right in it here. Again.

  31. nobody believes the CNN Jake Tapper fake news anymore though

  32. Is it not at all interesting to anyone that an Associate Deputy Attorney General Bruce Ohr, a senior career staffer who worked under Dep. AG Sally Yates — there are between 7-10 Associates in that office, as well as less senior staffers — maintained contact for well over a year, deep into the Pres. Trump’s first term in office, with former Brit Intel officer Steele, who the FBI had officially closed out as a source because of his violation of the agreement with the FBI to have no contact with the press.

Does anyone else see significance in the email traffic between Ohr and Steele well into 2017 where Steele worries about whether the “firewalls will hold”, and after Comey is fired he worries that he will be “exposed.”

Is none of this is worrying in the sense that Ohr — after meeting numerous times with Steele — passed on the contents of his discussions with Steele to the same FBI who had found Steele to be untruthful, and to have violated the terms of his source agreement thereby making him “unreliable” in Bureau-speak?

Is none of this worrying that Ohr had repeated and regular contact with Glenn Simpson at Fusion GPS, and that his wife worked for Fusion GPS on the very same project that Steele was hired to work on?

No one here seems to be concerned that Ohr’s jump responsibilities had nothing to do with intelligence, counter-intelligence, or national security matters — he was head of OCDETF, and his portfolio of responsibilities as Associate Dep. AG involved US efforts and policies at combating narcotics trafficking.

Does anyone care that this takes the investigation far beyond the “professionals” at the FBI, and directly into the laps of the political appointees in the Obama DOJ?

“Instead of “true” and “not true” I’d substitute “consistent with what we know so far” (i.e., not yet disproven), and “not true.” The problem with characterizing an explanation as “true” is that it gradually accretes more and more credibility over time, until it becomes received truth. 93. A common definition of truth is being “in accordance with fact or reality”.

  96. Link to Horowitz piece narc references above:

    https://amgreatness.com/2018/08/19/trumps-character-and-trumps-presidency/

What’s noteworthy in this piece is tu quoque argumentation on bad character:

The posture of these NeverTrumpers is transparently self-serving. It preserves their intellectual credentials as “conservatives,” and simultaneously takes them out of the line of fire from an increasingly vicious Left whose goal is to destroy Trump and his presidency, and—incidentally—conservative America. Sitting on the fence affords them new career opportunities—appearances on CNN and MSNBC and columns in the New York Times. All that’s required is that they avoid taking sides in the political war that is engulfing the country. All this reminds me of a memorable Trotsky sneer about liberals, whom he accused of being reluctant to step into the stream of political conflict because they were afraid to get their moral principles wet.

In other words — people who say bad characters are wimpy, because that brings in the fame and fortune. Nice guy, with a Masters in mindreading.

Once we get past what too many Trump fans seem obliged to do — slatter somebody’s reputation — we get to some reasonably interesting meat. Horowitz regards Trump as loyal. He was loyal to Omorosa. He was loyal to Bannon and Sessions at the beginning of his term, when they were accused of being white nationalist racists. This seems pretty weak tea — Trump was reeady and willing to dispatch Bannon when he took too much credit for the 2016 campaign, and being the resident supergenius. And his feelings for Sessions are evident to anyone who glances at his twitter feed.

But this is what Horowitz defines as the real loyalty:

Has Trump kept his promises to his supporters? Has he stayed the course he set for himself of making America great again? That loyalty is the character trait that matters most in a leader, and should matter most in any assessment of Trump. He has taken great personal risks and incurred great personal costs. His reputation for example, was pretty good before he ran against Democrats and their media, who fueled an epidemic of hate portraying him as a racist and neo-Nazi.

I’m betting there isn’t another Republican who would not have wilted under these attacks. Who would have had the fortitude to stay the course, and keep his promises. That’s really good character. And it’s presidential.

And this is the thing anti-Trump Conservatives have to answer. Trump has done things — some fairly easy — that Conservatives for years said they wanted to do, and never did. Why does Trump have the intestinal fortitude to do them, and the Bushies and like minded Republicans did not?

I believe Trump’s unending sense of personal grievance, racism, perpetual unpreparedness, corruption and indifference to ethics will stain Conservatism for years. The trickiness of the anti-Trumper is making that case, and also making the case that if never-Trump conservatives actually take over, they will actually DO anything. That’s the real challenge.

Moving the embassy to Jerusalem is the only thing I can think of, and that requires an asterisk because Dubya said he would “begin the process”, recognizing that the embassy’s location gave us leverage over both sides that would evaporate once the move was completed. And so it has.

I think the embassy should be in Jerusalem, but this affects the lives of Americans not at all; weighed in the balance against Trump’s disastrous Keystone Kops foreign policy, any good moving the embassy has done pales in comparison to the real harm Trump has done in nearly every other region of the globe.

Other than that, Trump has broken every promise he made during the campaign:

It’s inartfully expressed, but Guiliani is correct in the context of interviews given to law enforcement agents and the use of such interviews in setting up prosecutions for or lying to investigators.

If you think a littlr bit deeper into it, you would se etheer;s no real risk of prosecution. Just reputation harming.

I don’t think they usualy prosecute when two witnesses contradict each other. There has to be some other proof. Otherwise you have got the very definitoon of reasonable doubt. On top of that, Mueller is bound by a DOJ policy not to indict asitting president. he could recommend impeachment, but you don’t need a criminal act to do so, and a House ZDemocratic majority would — well what it would do is condict alot of investigations, while looking for soemthing stronger.

SWC> When Comey meets with Trump alone in the Oval Office, each is going to come out of that meeting with their narrative of what was said.

Trump had no idea this would become something important. I think it’s posisble taht trump offhandedly said a few words about Flynn.

But the purpose of that conversation was the NYT article that day.

    This story:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/14/us/politics/russia-intelligence-communications-trump.html

If you carefully read what Flynn wrote in his prepared testimonmy about the meeting late that day

    https://www.intelligence.senate.gov/sites/default/files/documents/os-jcomey-060817.pdf

…you will see that he has Trump reverting to the topic of leak at a point in the conversation where there is possibility that they were overheard.

After he had spoken for a few minutes about leaks, Reince Priebus leaned in through the door by the grandfather clock and I could see a group of people waiting behind him. The President waved at him to close the door, saying he would be done shortly. The door closed.

The President then returned to the topic of Mike Flynn…The President returned briefly to the problem of leaks. I then got up and left out the door by the grandfather clock

I think it quite possible that Trump said a few words about Mike Flynn, and might have opened up with that even, but didn’t think anything of it, and the main purpose of that meeting was to discuss leaks and that NYT story. Later when asked about it by his lawyers months later, he might nto even remember he did say something about Mike Flynn.

And what Flynn said he didn’t do – drop the case against Flynn – is precisely what he did do, immediately.

Bruce Ohr’s wife Nellie, worked for Fusion GPS, the firm that hired Steele on behalf of the Hillary Clinton cmpaign and the Democratic National Commitee (which was controlled by the Clinton campaign even before her nomination – although HRC didn’t care about orotecting those emails)

Rush Limbaugh susoects taht nellie Ohr wrote a lot of the derogatory information about trump that was in the dossier, but I think it was genuine Russian disinformation approved of by Vladimir Putin. Putin didn’t know Steele was working for the Democrats, and wanted him to have confidence in his old sources.

Does anyone else see significance in the email traffic between Ohr and Steele well into 2017 where Steele worries about whether the “firewalls will hold”, and after Comey is fired he worries that he will be “exposed.”

    Quite so.

In a place like TrumpWorld where “truth isn’t truth,” lies aren’t lies either. They’re just “alternative facts” or equivalently, DOUBLETHINK:

To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just so long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies—all this is indispensably necessary. Even in using the word DOUBLETHINK it is necessary to exercise DOUBLETHINK. For by using the word one admits that one is tampering with reality; by a fresh act of DOUBLETHINK one erases this knowledge; and so on indefinitely, with the lie always one leap ahead of the truth. – George Orwell, 1984

And how did actual border patrol *enforcement* do under Dubya? Were any of their jobs made easier by Dubya being legendarily beholden to the Chamber of Commerce on immigration?

“To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them”

I guarantee you that no one lying to the Democrats (whether it’s Trump talking about how he just loves DACA kids or Gorsuch saying he has no plans to do anything about Roe) is operating in this fashion. The Democrats have been and will continue lying to us as long as they’re in power and lying right back to them is less expensive than trying to force investigations and recantations on them. This is simply a part of the larger war, and victory is measured by the amount of forward progress towards the goals (of which many Republicans claimed to be on our side but turns out they were just lying like John McCain.)

So it behooves people who are neverTrump, but not in love with what the Democrats and their woke brigade have in store, to figure out what Trump’s got that they ain’t got. And part of it is realizing that saying “well, he’s just lying” may not cut it. Now it may be that some folks are just intoxicated with the way Trump has made racism and sexism acceptable all over again, and that’s the magic. Or maybe, folks just love the way Trump rips society to shreds, just by tweeting. If that’s it, maybe a principled GOP is an electoral loser, and we suffer years in the wilderness.

I’m not sure how we dig ourselves out of this hole. In the age of Trump, and look at the Republican primaries, who can be more Trump than Trump. Even though that will actively make it much more likely for a Democrat to get elected.

Democrats are at least being smart enough in competitive House districts to not actively trying to lose. Sure you get some Ocasio-Cortez’s in 95% blue districts, also a person that has never been elected to anything before, but those 60 districts that look like OH-12 aren’t getting her as an opponent.

If the future looks like a bunch of drooling dunces, arguing about the things they “know” that are actually unrelated to reality, that doesn’t bode well for actively creating positive momentum. That’s the world we’re in now, where a reality TV star and Twitter troll is the intellectual leader of a major party, and the other one has no leader. After his release he worked as an enforcer for his brother-in-law Leo D’Avanzo, who ran an organized crime operation involved in loan sharking and gambling at a restaurant in Brooklyn.’- source, wikirapsheet

I must say, this is an encouraging development.

Just as it wasn’t the government, but ordinary Americans rising to the occasion, who saved the Capitol building from the 9/11 terrorists, we have enormous reserves of private sector technical expertise capable of bolstering the nation’s cyber defenses against hostile foreign attack, even if the Commander-in-Chief would prefer to look the other way.

A GOP that wins by being “Trump” — as he is now — deserves to lose. I don’t want the alternative, either. But I won’t vote for racism sexism corruption authoritarianism.

Trump isn’t forever. I prefer a small government party with respect for civil and property rights. The pre-Trump, tea party GOP was headed that direction, and ought to be able to go that way again. But it did change course. Trump had something that lured the people who were supporting that away, and, for the most part, are keeping those core folks happy.

Those who liked the old tea party and have gone neverTrump can either be cranky, or work at collecting up their lost voters, while not embracing Trump’s disgraceful aspects. I’m not sure what the right course really is, because the attraction to the base may be the disgrace. However old I am, I have enough years left that I don’t want to spend the rest of my life feeling my country is totally screwed. So my question, and feel for the future, is how does the GOP, or whatever that becomes the voice of the right, succeed in shaking off Trump.

I am not interested in debating the point, because issues like this are almost never disputed in good faith. Let’s just say I’ve got enough to make the charge, and as much as you don’t want to, you can’t gaslight all these out of existence.

    Appalled (96665e)

  169. So you cite leftist sources where their own biases are stated as fact. Gotcha.

And you are right. You refuse to discuss this in good faith. But you no longer get to claim such falsehoods without challenge.

The man would’ve never risen to prominence in NYC with such obvious bigotry. I grew up there. I’m guessing you didn’t.

    NJRob (b00189)

  170. The Daily Telegraph is leftist? Good Golly, man! Churchill is rolling over in his grave.

As for the use of wikipedia — that’s an impressive list they’ve got there, with citations and stuff. Care to dispute it? Have at it. Well, at least as long as the host is willing to tolerate it, and his fuse seems pretty short.

While NJRob’s views are extreme, even for a Trump supporter, he is symptomatic of the wider problem.

There will always be a person who votes for Gus Hall, or listens to Michael Savage and hangs on every word. or want the NYT shut down, or believes it’s ok to beat up the guy with the American flag. The problem isn’t generalizing from one guy with extreme views. The problem is the GOP masses eating this stuff up — and devoting themselves to a right of center politics that isn’t this when Trump madness passes.

  177. “How can people like him who are so embittered possibly participate constructively in a 51-49 political system?”

  180. Aside from Giuliani’s “truth isn’t truth” idiocy, the former NY mayor was fact-checked on his other comments about the meeting between Trump’s inner circle and Putin’s little Natasha, and he was awarded four Pinnochios.

    Paul Montagu (9dcfd2)

  181. The one that was let into the country, thanks to a special visa from Loretta lynch, to screen a propaganda film that acted toward their supposed administration goals, did the fact check include that.

    Narciso (78a4a1)

  182. She was let into the US so she could defend her client, but obviously that wasn’t her sole motive for being here, but the mythology that Lynch let her in was also fact-checked. It was State that gave her a visa during the time of the infamous Trump Tower meeting.
