Michael Avenatti, Our 46th President

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:59 am

Allahpundit says our next president has announced his policy positions. But the most important one of all: he fights!

He’s got terrible judgment, he’s a media whore, and his ethics and honesty seem unlikely to withstand scrutiny. But he gets a ton of media attention and HE FIGHTS.

Naw, a guy like that could never go anywhere.

You think Republicans are the only ones who would sacrifice every principle in their sacred book to choose an over-hyped dunderhead who cons them into thinking he’s a Winner?

Go with that, then.

  28. Sour grapes losers, Conservative Republicans especially, are often quick to accuse winners of abandoning their sacred principles. It’s an easy (and self-serving) way to rationalize rejection at the polls.

The accusation stakes a claim on the moral high ground by launching an array of undefined virtue signals indicating the win was achieved at the expence of shallow and expedient ethical shortcomings.

We’ve seen it ad nauseam here, on TV, from Democrats, #NeverTrumpers and GOP elites. You can be sure that after an election the guy talking about principles is the guy who came up short.

  29. You think Republicans are the only ones who would sacrifice every principle in their sacred book to choose an over-hyped dunderhead who cons them into thinking he’s a Winner?

Why would we think that? They ran Hillary last time. And Kerry in 2004. I’d say McGovern in 1972, but McGovern had principles. Terrible ones, but principles.

  30. Trump has done more to advance conservative Principals[sic] in 2 years than the Republican party has in 20.

I must have been switching between channels when higher tariffs (i.e. massive new taxes), bigger budget deficits, more debt, insulting our allies (Britain, Germany, Canada), fellating our enemies (Russia, North Korea), moral degeneracy, bigotry, obstruction of justice, pathological lying and covering up foreign military attacks on our country became conservative “principals”.

    Dave (445e97)

  31. True, Avenatti fights.

Whether he *wins* is a different question entirely. Trump actually had a history of successes as well as failures to burnish his name, as well as having enough haters and stalkers to be considered the most-vetted man in New York.

As usual, people (mostly cowards) who don’t actually fight fail to see the whole picture, and immediately declare the game rigged in favor of the few fighters who actually dare to fight, when actually fighting themselves might actually get them a few victories.

“He really does have all the qualifications, plus the ability to speak in coherent sentences and about 100 extra IQ points.”

You Democrats and your worship of court TV. He’s a lawyer, not a showman. He’s trained in front of judges and friendly media, not the actual public and hostile media. He’ll meltdown off-puttingly on the debate stand or anything else where his talking points aren’t handed to him, just like the last 2 lawyers you tried to run. Tim Kaine is NOT a good look. Hillary Clinton is NOT a good look.

People who make their careers off of marginal rather than common people do NOT connect with the public well enough to win national elections.

  37. Washington Examiner has some excellent bits on how China ripped off the postal service (and by extension, why Amazon loves shipping through China so much:

    https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/op-eds/trump-can-move-unilaterally-to-stop-us-subsidies-for-chinese-shipping

“Decades ago, the U.S. entered into a global agreement created by the Universal Postal Union, a U.N. agency that sets postal rates for delivering letters and packages around the world.

Its terms are easy enough to understand in their basic structure. If a person or company sends a letter or package from Norway to the United States, the Norwegian Postal service will handle the leg from Norway to the United States, with the U.S. postal service taking responsibility for shipping it to its final destination. The UPU sets the rates for both legs of the shipment.

The problem is that the general underpricing of those rates set by the UPU, called terminal dues, has generated hundreds of millions in losses for an already financially pressured U.S. Postal service. These losses are growing rapidly. This is particularly true of discounted rates for China, which have allowed that country to take advantage of American taxpayers for years.”

Exactly how underpriced are we talking here?

“But China, the second largest and one of the most sophisticated economies in the world, is classified in the same tier as Gabon, Botswana, and Cuba. This outdated classification means the U.S. is effectively subsidizing every package China sends our way. China is exploiting this system to devastating effect. Under the UPU agreement, Chinese senders can mail any package to the U.S. and the Post Office will deliver it for less than $1.50.”

LESS THAN A BUCK FIFTY FOR PACKAGE DELIVERY! No wonder the Post Office keeps posting losses!

“This is a devastating handicap for American e-commerce and retail businesses to bear. These postal subsidies are putting our companies, particularly our small businesses, at an immense disadvantage against the Chinese, constricting U.S. job and economic growth.

And Chinese counterfeit products take advantage of the same U.S. shipping subsidy. This victimizes American businesses twice, who pay to ship products that violate their intellectual property rights. The counterfeit goods industry, as a $1.7 trillion market, is costing millions of jobs and is devastating to the U.S. retail market.”

This is the Capitalism(TM) that not one single Republican sought to make a national issue out of until Trump came along and forced them to confront it, because their donors were making a killing off of keeping the status quo alive and NATIONALISM was a dirty word.

    Steppe Nomad (d647e2)

  38. Everyone thinks they know what they are going to get with the vapid celebrity. With the politicians — there is much less confidence. Also, celebs are in the charisma business, and are in the business of seducing an audience. And, we are more prone, from watching their movies or interviews, or tv shows, to give the a suspension of disbelief to an actor or a reality star, then we are to a goof like Ryan or a poker player like McConnell.

This is worse now because our masses seem really in search of someone to really love. With all our institutions acting horribly, it’s a lot easier to fall in love with someone that we think we know through tv, tmz, or cute youtube videos.

  50. Why has the “Drain The Swamp” fighter/stable genius Trump let Democrats retain their security clearances

DRJ, plenty of people who don’t work for the government at the moment have security clearances.

Anyone working for a private firm that does military-related work for the government might require it.

Having a security clearance does not give you access to any classified information that isn’t required for your job, it simply indicates that you have passed the security review necessary if your job ever does require access to such information.

Several of my colleagues (physics professors) have security clearances that they have maintained for decades, despite not being involved in any work that formally requires it (one of them used to do neutrino experiments at the Savannah River nuclear reactor that produces weapons-grade plutonium, and the other had done cryptography work back in the 1970’s).

Many people who have served in the military also retain security clearances after separation, and this allows them to obtain related jobs in the private sector more easily.

  53. There was no voice in the GOP in 2016 who took similar policy positions as those taken by Trump.

The GOP fielded a list of largely uninspiring re-tread candidates, and Trump’s vastly superior skill at drawing attention to himself — and the media’s willingness to give him free coverage because he was ratings gold — gave him a megaphone he didn’t have to pay for.

Avenetti has none of those advantages.

He’s just a former foot solider of Rahm Emanuel. He offers nothing for Dem voters that they won’t see from a dozen other candidates.

This is an exercise in vanity. He’ll be gone — if he even enters — before the first primary ballot is cast.

    wendell (032acc)

  56. 45 — security clearances aren’t “revoked” for people who simply depart government.

But having a security clearance, and having a “need to know” or actual access to classified information are separate issues.

Strozk had his security clearance revoked because at the time he was still and FBI employee, and he still worked in a building where there was classified information. By revoking his clearance, that created “no go” zones for him — he could not enter any SCIF or other area that housed classified information.

Someone out of government like Brennan is not working somewhere that has classified info laying around. And since he’s not a gov’t employee, he has no “need to know” with respect to any such info. So there was never really any purpose in revoking it.

But allowing him to keep it kept open the possibility that someone else with clearance and access could provide information to Brennan if they had a purpose for doing so. Given Brennen’s proclivity for appearing on TV and talking about intelligence issues, the Admin took the unusual step of revoking his clearance so that everyone in gov’t is now on notice that he not only has no “need to know”, he no longer has the clearance necessary for anyone to share anything with him.

    shipwreckedcrew (56b591)

  57. Everyone?

Omarosa will have something to say about that.

Besides, the others mentioned on Trump’s hit list who tweet criticism of him under consideration for revocation mentioned at the WH presser are all vocal critics on his enemies list; Stzrok, Clapper, Yates, Comey, etc.

Great TV, but Omarosa will have the last word by the next news cycle.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  58. First, at this point in my administration, any benefits that senior officials might glean from consultations with Mr. Brennan, are not outweighed by the risks posed by his erratic conduct and behavior.

Second, that conduct and behavior has tested and far exceeded the limits of any professional courtesy that may have been due to him.

it’s impossible to argue with the cogent observations President Trump included in his announcement about John Brennan

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  59. There was no voice in the GOP in 2016 who took similar policy positions as those taken by Trump.

Remarkable, isn’t it? To think back to a time not long ago when identity politics, religious discrimination, bigotry, torture, protectionism, and vassalage to Moscow weren’t the official policy positions of the Republican party.

What a difference a couple years makes!

The GOP fielded a list of largely uninspiring re-tread candidates

This is completely untrue. In fact none of the major contenders for the GOP nomination had sought it before. Cruz, Rubio, Jeb and Walker were all relatively new on the national scene. Kasich was really the only long-time Washington insider, but even he was more recently a successful governor. Their problem wasn’t that they were uninspiring, it was that they all had consciences and none of them was willing to lie like Trump did.

He’s just a former foot solider of Rahm Emanuel. He offers nothing for Dem voters that they won’t see from a dozen other candidates.

Not so sure about this. You want “uninspiring retreads”, that’s what the Democrats have – Biden? Sanders? Warren? Please. And those are probably their three *best* candidates. They may be marginally less crooked than Hillary, but they are certainly no more appealing personally. The younger names mentioned as possible 2020 candidates are no better.

IMO, the only thing stopping the Democrats from running the table in 2020 is the unattractiveness of their so-called leaders. If they could find someone with charisma, in the mold of Slick Willie or Obama, who can make Trump look like the ignorant churl he is, I don’t think there’s any stopping them.

It certainly remains to be seen whether Avenatti has legs, but he looks like a more formidable candidate than anyone else I’ve seen mentioned.
