My Take on the “Comedy” Routine at the White House Correspondence Dinner Is Simple

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 5:47 pm

Here it is: it wasn’t funny. But I enjoyed watching Sarah Sanders called out for lying, on account of her being a paid liar. I didn’t enjoy watching her called out for her looks, because that kind of commentary is low class.

But you have no moral basis to complain about the cheap shots at her looks, unless you are on record complaining about all the similar cheap shots Trump has taken at people over the years.

That is all.

  13. I didn’t see it, but on paper it was pretty funny. To me, this was the best part, because she said it right to their faces.

You guys are obsessed with Trump. Did you used to date him? Because you pretend like you hate him, but I think you love him. I think what no one in this room wants to admit is that Trump has helped all of you. He couldn’t sell steaks or vodka or water or college or ties or Eric, but he has helped you. He’s helped you sell your papers and your books and your TV. You helped create this monster, and now you’re profiting off of him.

  18. The main crime was that unless you hate Sanders, it wasn’t funny.
Comedy is about bringing the funny.
The WHCD has had a few inadvertently funny “jokes” in the last few years, but no intended jokes have been funny.
Imus wasn’t that funny, Colbert was unwatchably rude and caustic and this idiot was only funny if you hate Trump and his appointees. Obviously you hate on Sanders because she is a “paid liar”, but I’ve listened to LA DA spokespeople try to spin nonsense into whole cloth and never heard a complaint from the inside. Their job is to make it all palatable, take all the trigger words out and spin it into its blandest, most innocuous form. Anyone with a brain takes it all with a grain of salt because… well… bland

    steveg (a9dcab)

  19. I do think that many, many people in our nasty political class like to be “mean girls” about nicknames and insults and appearances. And just like middle school, those people reveal themselves to be of low character.

It’s gross when people make comments about Michelle Obama’s looks.

It’s gross when DJT makes comments about how people look.

It’s gross to call DJT a cheetoh, and I have done that. It was wrong, and reminded me of the increasing nastiness or lack of character throughout our culture. The Left and Right should not be in a race to see who can be most vile.

And it’s wrong when the “comedian” at the WHCD does that kind of thing. Period. Full stop.

The “comedian” did this entirely for attention, just like anyone does who makes a habit of “mean girl” behavior.

We need to better than that. All of us. Especially when it is applied to opponents.

Many people confuse this kind of approach with ideological purity or even toughness. It’s bullying. That’s all.

    Gryph (08c844) — 4/29/2018 @ 7:58 pm

I’d call it fighting dirty when you realize your “opponent” is doing that and worse. Talk to me when movement conservatives turn a blind eye to trump letting North Korea keep their nuclear plan while shipping them 800 billion dollars on planes in the middle of night just so he could get a “win” by having them sign a meaningless piece of paper. Or how about if movement conservatives start marching by the millions in anti war rallies unless it’s a republican president who goes to war.

  24. What would be worse:
Sanders shilling for the President, or Mueller hiding exculpatory evidence?

    steveg (a9dcab)

  25. I don’t care about the jokes/truths about Sanders that were made. She signed up to work for a dishonest man with low moral character and is a known misogynist. She signed up to defend and spin and protect him. She gave Wollf a lot of material to work with. So did Trump. And so did the media, which was rightly called out by her.

What disturbed me about her “jokes” was this:

“[Vice-president Mike Pence] thinks abortion is murder. Which first of all don’t knock it till you try it. And when you do try it, really knock it, you gotta get that baby out of there. And yeah, sure, you can groan all you want, I know a lot of you are very anti-abortion, you know, unless it’s the one you got for your secret mistress.”

So glib and cavalier, yet all the while she acknowledges it’s a baby that is being killed, and yet the audience laughs because Pence. This was a room of people seemingly lacking any moral compass, character or ability to hear exactly what she said.

  38. Anon Y. Mous,

The comments I quoted above were about women’s looks. The jokes told by Wolf about Sanders at the WHCD were not about her looks:

And, of course, we have Sarah Huckabee Sanders. We’re graced with Sarah’s presence tonight. I have to say I’m a little star-struck. I love you as Aunt Lydia in “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

Mike Pence, if you haven’t seen it, you would love it.

Every time Sarah steps up to the podium, I get excited because I’m not really sure what we’re going to get: you know, a press briefing, a bunch of lies or divided into softball teams. “It’s shirts and skins, and this time, don’t be such a little b—-, Jim Acosta.”

I actually really like Sarah. I think she’s very resourceful. Like, she burns facts, and then she uses the ash to create a perfect smoky eye. Like, maybe she’s born with it; maybe it’s lies.

    It’s probably lies.

And I’m never really sure what to call Sarah Huckabee Sanders. You know, is it Sarah Sanders? Is Sarah Huckabee Sanders? Is it Cousin Huckabee? Is it Auntie Huckabee Sanders? Like, what’s Uncle Tom but for white women who disappoint other white women? Oh, I know: Aunt Coulter.

Quite so, although (given Hoagie’s deep misunderstanding of my point) I sense that some don’t quite understand who the true hypocrites are here. So I’ll spell it out, since I was apparently unclear in the post: everyone who applauded Trump’s insults about people’s looks, but whined about this. THOSE are the hypocrites.

(Also, anyone who whined about Trump insulting people’s looks but applauded the WHCD unfunny person’s shots based on looks. There’s a mitigating factor there, though in that Sanders spins for someone who does the same, so there’s a kind of rough justice, arguably — but I still don’t like it.)

Maybe I misunderstood the “smoky eye” stuff but I thought that was a shot at her makeup.

Again: she signed up to defend Trump. I don’t feel too sorry for her. But such jokes are wrong.

what does that make Michelle Wolf

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  47. Dana,

To tell the truth I hadn’t watched her routine, just relied on reports about how awful it was. But, you’re right, there wasn’t much of anything about Sanders looks. Except maybe for this one, “I love you as Aunt Lydia in “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

    https://www.google.com/search?q=Aunt+Lydia+in+%E2%80%9CThe+Handmaid%27s+Tale.%E2%80%9D&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiL5dzCjuHaAhUFHHwKHSUgDvcQ_AUIDCgD&biw=1056&bih=512&dpr=1.36

Not sure, though. The pics of Aunt Lydia don’t look all that attractive, but mabe the joke was more about the character of the woman rather than looks.

But, that possible exception aside, you’re right. The jokes were about other stuff.

    Anon Y. Mous (6cc438)

  48. I don’t think the Aunt Lydia reference was about her looks. I think it was her spinning lies for Trump. Here is a description of the Aunt Lydias:

Aunt Lydia – The Aunts are the class of women assigned to indoctrinate the Handmaids with the beliefs of the new society and make them accept their fates. Aunt Lydia works at the “Red Center,” the re‑education center where Offred and other women go for instruction before becoming Handmaids. Although she appears only in Offred’s flashbacks, Aunt Lydia and her instructions haunt Offred in her daily life. Aunt Lydia’s slogans and maxims drum the ideology of the new society into heads of the women, until even those like Offred, women who do not truly believe in the ideology, hear Gilead’s words echoing in their heads.

That’s how I took it anyway. Not about her looks, but rather about a true believer using her position of power to spin, cover and lie for the president and re-educate the masses.

    Dana (023079)

I also have heard from members expressing dismay with the entertainer’s monologue and concerns about how it reflects on our mission. Olivier Knox, who will take over this summer as our president, and I, recognize these concerns and are committed to hearing from members on your views on the format of the dinner going forward. Last night’s program was meant to offer a unifying message about our common commitment to a vigorous and free press while honoring civility, great reporting and scholarship winners, not to divide people. Unfortunately, the entertainer’s monologue was not in the spirit of that mission.

Every day we are working hard to advocate for our members and ensure coverage that benefits the public, and the dinner is an important opportunity to highlight and maintain our essential work. The White House Correspondents’ Association remains dedicated to that mission.

  94. 44. Also, Dana, the Aunt Lydia thing seems like a crack at her looks.

It could be that Ms. Wolf was insulting Ms. Sanders looks. It could also be her insulting Sanders for her unflinching dedicated role in furtherance of a crap regime, sort of like Aunt Lydia. If you really want to criticize her for going after someone’s looks, how come no one complained about her crack at McConnell. She said he couldn’t be there because he was getting his neck circumcised which, granted, was actually funny, but still. Given the location of where actual circumcisions take place, she basically called him a dickhead.

    Paul Montagu (e6130e)

  95. Actually Trump calling anyone names is not the same (in the least) as what happened at the WHCD this weekend. When Trump called Rosie O a big fat pig it was because she called him or implied that he and his then owned Miss USA pageant & reigning Miss USA, names such as pimp and implied the Miss USA was a whore. Once Rosie waded into that kind of “critical territory” for anyone who received that kind of slander, it was gloves off.

And for the same reasons mentioned, that is why anyone can slam the POS WHCD “comedian” from this past weekend.

I have never read or seen Trump go after anyone first unless he is attacked first. Rosie started it by stating on the View “the comb over” on her blog Wednesday — and suggested he was acting like a “pimp” for Miss USA, Tara Conner.

Then on Fox the week later he slammed her. Rosie deserved it and EVERYONE knew it.

This weekend was total BS. The comedian was and is trash. I reserved the right to call her out anytime. What she did versus what Trump did are 360degress different instances: She (whether it be Rosie or the WHCD comedian) was the attacker, basically lying, going for blood, unprovoked, and Trump was the defender, defending himself from lies that used derogatory language.

The funny thing about Rosie and her unprovoked attacks against Trump, Trump and his Miss USA were not pimps or whores and Rosie was and is a big fat slob. That was why Rosie suffered her celebrity star to fall and Trumps to rise, across all political affiliations.

So now the same thing: the WHCD comedian was foul and out of line. But it is protected speech. And that is why people of all political affiliations are criticizing the WHCD comedian, thru their own exercise of the first amendment.

So yeah there are lots of reasons to throw tomatoes at the WHCD comedian.

Assume A attacks B in a nasty and personal way, and C defends A.

Is C fair game for attack? If so, is B the only one allowed to pile on C, or may the world join in?

Or does it depend on who A, B, and C are?

  103. To make it more concrete, you attacked Michelle Wolf, calling her trash, even though she never said anything about you.

If I supported Wolf’s nasty personal attacks on Sanders, would you feel justified in letting me have it too?

If so, that shows you that you find it justified to a) attack people who have attacked others and b) attack people who defend the original nasty attack.

And if that’s how you feel, then Wolf was entitled to attack Sanders for supporting Trump, who engages in nasty personal attacks.

The logic works both ways, my friend.

The comment was a shot at Trump. Melania sustained some collateral damage, which stemmed from the fact that her marriage to the president is transactional, a fact that she has cheerfully (if only implicitly) acknowledged. Now others acknowledge it too, and I am one of them. Am I supposed to feel shame about this? Because if that’s your goal, it ain’t working.

    DRJ (15874d)

  129. Patterico,

Nope. All the progressive/regressive sophistic rationalizing in the world doesn’t change the issue at hand: Trump only attacks those who attack him first, or his business, or friends and family. Then he goes and defends himself and others.

You were validating the “comedian’s” unjustified attacks based on the error that Trump in the past did the same thing, which in fact, he did not.

You are validating, though mistakenly, that is what makes it ok to attack anyone who is associated with POTUS Trump. And that is faulty logic to avoid showing any kind of deserved “sympathy” towards someone who was clearly unjustly attacked just because she works for POTUS Trump and she is a woman who is not a progressive liberal. All of those “comedic” attacks were because of that as well as she works for POTUS Trump.

That is the issue. This whole multi-post on trying to find a logical way to validate your support of a “comedian” who went low on a POTUS you can’t stand, still doesn’t validate that across the political spectrum, what the supposed “comedian” did was wrong and not done well.

heck attack me all you want. We can bend logic all day long to support any position and that is what the liberal progressives have made a living off of; if you are trying to find a way to do that, you probably will.

But it still doesn’t change the facts: The “comedian” was wrong on a basic human interaction level, which Trump has never done before. The “comedian” is protected by the first amendment to say lies or go low, but she was and is still wrong. And I have the right to call her out on it.

Shoot me, a supposed “messenger” of sorts, if you want, but it doesn’t change the facts: and most of those facts are recorded for posterity to back me up.

this was around the time trashbag Liz Mair was sending nudie pics of Melania to people in Utah

and Ted Cruz was so desperate and flailing

he decided to blow a harmless tweet up into a big big huge deal, propagating it far more than it would have been otherwise, and further humiliating his mentally fragile wife

and in the end it was all for naught

he ended up looking like a pouty, weak, overwhelmed and unfocused mess, and the voters turned their backs on him

Not you of course, but a lot of low-information voters and less serious people – who do vote. When you figure out a way to take away their vote, I’ll stop caring.

Besides if the super-elite White House Correspondents were so concerned with Constitutional Government, why did they hire a “comedian” to attack the POTUS?

    rcocean (1a839e)

  139. People seem to be pushing the idea that because Trump – and some point in the last two years – made fun of someone’s looks, that means the Left and Never-Trumpers can be rude/nasty to Trump and his subordinates – forever.

    What an odd idea.

    rcocean (1a839e)

  140. What sick relationship: Sanders agrees to work for Trump as his spinmeister, fully knowing about his treatment of women. Yet she, to this day, defends him and lies for him – and not just about women. Trump boycotts the WHCD because he knows what a target he is, yet nonetheless Sanders is “encouraged” by Trump, her boss, to attend the dinner In his stewad and take the crap instead. This while he is busy hiding out and campaigning in Michigan so he can get some love. Understandably, he doesn’t want to attend, and yet has Sanders attend and take the hits instead. And then he tweets his disgust about the dinner and Wolf::

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner was a failure last year, but this year was an embarrassment to everyone associated with it. The filthy “comedian” totally bombed (couldn’t even deliver her lines-much like the Seth Meyers weak performance). Put Dinner to rest, or start over!

  142. Sorry for the ads. I was lazy and did not preview. Try again:

Liz Mair, a Republican strategist whose anti-Trump super PAC Make America Awesome launched the Facebook campaign last week, said each ad is expected to reach around 10,000 Mormons of voting age a day. The goal is twofold: increase turnout among LDS voters, and urge them to strategically consolidate around Ted Cruz, who is close to the 50% winner-take-all threshold in Utah.

The group is running three ads: one that features Mitt Romney, one that emphasizes Trump’s past support for pro-choice policies, and a third that shows Melania Trump posing nude. The Melania ad, which is by far the most provocative, invites viewers to meet “your next first lady.” Mair said that one is being promoted on Instagram as well, but only to LDS women.

Mair said this is the first time the group has run ads urging voters to back a specific candidate. In Utah and Arizona, polls show Cruz with a much better chance than John Kasich of beating Trump. And Mair, who has Mormon family members, believes she could bring some expertise in the effort to court LDS voters.

They didn’t fall for the anti-Trump lies.

Romney was worse then Trump ever was. He was pro-abortion and pro-gay adoption, enabled all of the Catholic orphanages to shutdown, and started what became known as Obamacare with Romneycare, in the most liberal northeastern state of Massachusetts. Yet he then changed the year or two before he ran for office. But because he wasn’t rough around the edges, he was given a pass by EVERYONE. Romney even wanted Trumps money and endorsement. Trump even sat out in order to give Romney a chance to become POTUS.

Trump, after being insulted by the anti-Trumpers by having himself and his family attached without mercy, swung back and swung back hard, and the anti-Trumpers scrambled and cried “mama that man, he hurt me….”

oh well. the anti-Trumpers started it first. They got what they deserved. They wanted scorched earth and they certainly got it. And in the end Trump forgot and forgave and has even given Romney compliments and for people to vote for him for Senator, and interviewed him for Sec of State. He even promotes foreign policies that Romney spoke about and even gives Romney credit.

yet the anti-Trumpers still hold grudges….

I also do not much like myself when I enjoy some of their efforts.

Sanders is a big girl. She has chosen the business of The Swamp and the Deep State. She got stained. it happens. AND Wolf is a piece of garbage.

  175. Eh…should be: the man in the most powerful position….

    Dana (023079)

  176. She chose to let herself be humiliated, NJRob, because her boss encouraged it. She submitted herself and her dignity to a man too afraid to take the heat himself.

But President Trump showed his true courage by whining about it after the fact, Dana.

Much like how he is now indignantly defending Ronny Jackson’s integrity after throwing him under the bus last week at the first whiff of trouble.

Sometimes a leader has to sacrifice loyal underlings for a greater good – his own.

    Dave (445e97)

  177. it dismays me to see a young woman willingly submit to such a man of low character and allow herself to be debased for his sake.

Do you feel the same way about women who voted for Trump, on Election day, despite knowning everything that was despicable about him prior to the election?

    BuDuh (817531)

  178. knowning should be knowing, Beldar.

    BuDuh (817531)

  179. Of course not, BuDuh. The two situations are not the same.

    Dana (023079)

  180. So some women are allowed to compromise if they think the country will benefit from a Trump Presidency and others deserve ridicule?

    BuDuh (817531)

    Dana (023079)

  183. I am being consistent with respect to women. I believe they can make intelligent choices based on perceived goals.

Sanders supporting the administration is no different than a voter supporting the administration the only time she can.

I almost think a vote is more powerful because you can’t rescind it. A lot of though needs to go into a vote beforehand.

    BuDuh (817531)

  184. though should be thought, Beldar.

    BuDuh (817531)

  185. Beldar left a comment? How come I’m not seeing it?

  186. Beldar likes it when we spell correctly, nk. If he is lurking, I don’t want to disappoint him.

    BuDuh (817531)

  187. Trolling commenters who are not even commenting on the thread? Yes, you a true blue orange Trumpkin. That’s a habit of your badgerhead, too. To attack people not in the room or in the conversation.

    nk (dbc370)

  188. You must have missed his comments on spelling errors.

    BuDuh (817531)

I don’t buy it or agree one iota. Its still sounds like you suffer from sour grapes that Trump became POTUS.

    you said:

“He makes the rules: it’s okay for Sanders to be publicly abused, but not him. And she’s willing to play by these rules. They’re both sick.”

so what was spoken to Sanders by the WHCD “comedian”, was Sanders and Trump’s fault because she & Trump should have know it would be that vulgar?

Pray tell how could they or you know that? Did you actually know it would be that bad?

    …..with what….a crystal ball?

No one has been this pathetic & vulgar to Sanders, or Trump, even on SNL.

Even the WHCD personnel at the event said this was not what they expected.

…the “comedian” made her choice and she will have to pay the consequences. So are others who start an argument with Trump or call him names. He will finish it.

Another “comedian” who has given POTUS Trump and his administration a gift. He will only become more popular by it and the pig farm of the “progressive” media will only be more hated for it.

i’m a lot dubious about this cause of if it were that easy everyone would do it

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  194. I agree with Dana with one cynical caveat: I think Trump and Sanders knew that either Trump or she would be made fun of at the dinner. I also think they wanted it to happen so they could use it to mobilize their supporters and have another issue to use against the media. It’s a smart plan and Sanders was probably willing to take the heat for the greater good.

    DRJ (15874d)

  195. Well, I suppose the text could be cut and pasted into a spelling checker. But that’s not so easy. A good online one (but an erratic website) is juno.

They should have been prepared for the worst. Always. And perhaps they were, and knew it would be this craven because now who scores political points looking like a victim now because a lefty comedienne did a hatchet job on an unpopular figure on the right whose job it is to spin and defend a president that is utterly loathed by the elite class of professional journos. 205. Also, Where Eagles Dare, The White House could’ve googled Michelle Wolf, gone to her Twitter feed, and also played a number of her standup routines tog an idea of what they were facing . But maybe they did…

My take is, President Trump has unfairly attacked people, made it personal, viciously insulted them in the public square and set the tone for this White House. As such it’s rich that the White House complains when a left-wing comedian, a known Hillary supporter lashes out in a crass and low- class manner.

    Dana (023079)

  206. I don’t know what do you expected? Decency?

    Dana (023079)

as I have said repeatedly, but you like the left wing, RINOS and the other anti-trumpers DONT want to hear it: Trump only attacks when he is attacked first. Just like he crushed the fat pig Rosie AFTER she called him a pimp and implied the Miss USA pageant was for whores.

Please show me anything Trump ever did to someone even close to what this supposed “comedian” did at the WHCD. show me the proof.

also show me the proof where Trump “attacked” anyone who didn’t attack him first.

whether it was the dirtbag McCain who always attacked anyone who spoke out against the RINOS of the senate, such as all of the name-calling he did against Cruz and Paul when they first were popular. McCain tried the same thing with Trump and Trump handed McCain’s head back to him.

again show me proof that Trump EVER attacked anyone first or ever sunk so low was to attack someone as the supposed “comedian” did at the WHCD.

this is just the same left wing, RINOS and the other anti-trumpers cabal that in the end, shows all of them more desperate and more upset that their candidates in the 2016 race for POTUS, lost.

you guys will support anyone as long as it makes Trump look bad and helps bring down his presidency.

really, for any of you to support what happened to Sanders this weekend only proves why supposed “conservatism” is a dead political ideology of the USA. I mean even if Trumps family was attacked, his children and grandchildren, you guys dont care and only pile on. At least Trump admits he hasn’t been a good husband. you guys think you are some kind of gold standard of political ideology.

You got the leader you deserved. Its a Trump world right now and you and your kind, are relegated to the dust bin of as-beens, along with the supposed “comedian” of the WHCD, and the WHC. Who would have thought that the corrupt WHC, the FBI, CIA, the DNC and even the RNC, would be so inconsequential and hated. Their lies have validated their down fall.

Along with anyone else who supports them.

    Where Eagles Dare (8f562c)

  220. CNN: Late-night hosts defend Michelle Wolf’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner act

CNN, same day: The 57 most outlandish, outrageous and offensive lines from Trump’s Michigan rally

“If, among those who supposedly cherish freedom of expression, certain widespread viewpoints become taboo, where does that leave us? In a dishonest media atmosphere. More and more, conservative writers and pundits will claim to support Trump, whether they actually do or not. Meanwhile, those who refuse to engage in the charade will be increasingly sidelined.”

Irony is not dead. Nor, apparently, is willful blindness. Those who might support Trump at CNN wre “sidelined” quite some time ago.

    But let’s yell about Fox.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  221. BTW, to focus on the insults about appearance is to bury the lead. Calling out GOP women as “Uncle Toms” and using everything in the book but “c-nt” to describe them is rather more of an issue.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  222. And the REALLY funny thing? Not one of Chris Cillizza’s “57 most outlandish, outrageous and offensive” lines is outlandish, outrageous or offensive.

I am willing to bet that one or more lines uttered at the Conspirators Dinner was all three.

There’s another. 24 times on Howard Stern.

I get it, Trump licker. You don’t care. And that’s fine. But to just lie to us and pretend it didn’t happen? That’s pretty low-class, there buddy.

    Gryph (08c844)

  224. 225. Whoops…I think I might have messed up those links. But you get my point. I could go on. But I won’t. You Trump lickers keep up this level of disingenuousness, I might just take up Pat on his offer to use his blocking list.

  225. Gryph,

    Name calling?

Why did trump, insult Carly? Was it her campaign speech during the week that attacked his reputation and family. Also, fiorino knew she had no business on that stage.

    Gryph (08c844)

  230. “136. And the ironic part is that *this* attitude is how the Left justifies their own personal attacks.”

Another example of that you guys just don’t get it.

The Left does NOT “justify their own personal attacks.” They just attack us because we are their enemy. They need no further justification that that.

Anything they say other than that is simply them trying to get you (us) to stop defending against their attack.

“You’re right. Donald Trump has never insulted anyone’s appearance. I stand corrected. Clearly, you have the better argument.”

and again, you’re wrong, Trump only attacked when he was attacked first by the “loyal opposition”. So did any anti-trumpers call out the attack on his wife? why, because you thought Trump and his wife deserved it from a previous name-calling episode that Trump didn’t start as well?

all the anti-trumpets SAY they like people who speak tough and whats on their mind, “truth to power”, but when that same tactic is pointed at them, then the attacker is “immoral”. And “their candidate was the good conservative guy”….

people can like Bach and company all they want, but hey guess what, out of the culture of Bach, Beethoven and Wagner (both of them) we got good ol Hitler & camps for those he didn’t agree with. just goes to show just because you think you are an “elite” and above it all, your notion of culture can produce some pretty amoral and immoral leaders.

really you are no different then redstate: you think you can “delete” what you dont agree with. Sounds a bit like censorship to me.

    go figure.
