Bill Browder’s U.S. Visa Waiver Cancelled, Quickly Restored, After Bogus Putin Interpol Notice

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:16 pm

So I wrote a spittle-flecked post at RedState about the cancellation of Bill Browder’s US visa waiver pursuant to yet another bogus Interpol notice from Vladimir Putin. Fortunately, I saved my rage for Putin and gave Trump the benefit of the doubt. Then I went to look at Browder’s Twitter after the post was published and saw that Browder’s visa waiver had been restored a couple of hours earlier. (I saw no news stories about the restoration despite looking before posting.)

Anyway, there’s no point in repeating the whole clusterfark here, so I will merely link the post. I repeat that the U.S. needs to fix the system so that Putin can’t do this again.

  1. Understandable. We are cooperating with both Russia and Interpol in the GWOT.

But it can happen in any bureaucracy. I had a client arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle. It had been stolen, found, salvaged, and sold to my client, but the original theft report had never been cleared off the Chicago PD’s computers.

  2. Yeah, I got pulled over once by LAPD because my car came up stolen. It had been — 6 months earlier — and returned to me. After the explanations, I asked the officers how long it would take to get out of their system. He said “It probably just got in.” I went down to DMV the next day and got new plates.

  5. That’s still not a good explanation, recall the last administration gave visa to veselniskaya in order to appear for depositions re that case its not a Charlie Gibson thing.

  6. Patterico: I admire you for not blaming Trump and even more for cracking a small joke about your fairly minor TDS.

Which reminds me. happyfeet, please stop insulting Ted Cruz so horribly. He is often wrong, he is not evil so far as I can see. Your insights are often spot on and persuasive, but Cruz is more or less on the side of the angels.

Unlike Hillary. She’s pure evil. You can slag her as much as you want, and I’ll cheer.

  7. Visa waiver (Elecronic System for Travel Authorization) and visa are two different things. As a British subject, Browder can visit America (for up to six months?) without a visa. He could still do the same without the visa waiver, but he would need to apply for a visa.

It wasn’t about TDS but about getting upset regarding a situation that had already been resolved.

It actually was reassuring to me that I found it difficult to imagine that Trump would actually allow this to stand.

  9. Ted Cruz needs to show he understands where we are at this juncture in america Mr. Z

this would require an epiphany on his part

he needs to speak out against nevertrump trash like filthy butt-suck John McCain and the deeply anti-semitic tennessee failstud Bob Corker who put their nigh-masturbatory fascination with their own egos ahead of rolling back the sadistic agenda of barack obama what’s so viciously raped so so many people and helping america heal and move forward

Sen. Ted Cruz on Friday praised the choice of Robert Mueller to lead the investigation into whether President Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia to influence the 2016 presidential elections.

“I don’t think it was necessary to appoint a special counsel,” Cruz said. “But the Department of Justice made the decision to do that. If they are going to appoint a special counsel, Bob Mueller is an excellent choice.”

this is who Ted Cruz is, you see

    he’s not a leader he’s a vile slurky swamptoad

i do applaud him though when he does the right thing

he’s been a beautifully staunch support of the Mulvaney plan to target economic growth with robust and meaningful tax reform

  11. the reason bill browder needs to beg for a US visa like a dog is cause he gave up his US citizenship for tax purposes

  14. You mean the State Department is not experienced yet with the existence of fake Red Notices from Russia? Or, do they normally not care?

  15. He later told MSNBC that he is “very happy” that U.S. officials resolved the issue. Earlier Monday, Browder had said on CNBC’s “Power Lunch” that a quick fix would indicate the matter was simply a bureaucratic issue. He said that failure to do so would suggest that “there’s obviously something more sinister at foot.”

Interpol under Putin pressure. What leverage did Vlad have? Bureaucratic oversight or hoping no one would notice?

  16. Heh. Kid Rock was just kidding about the Senate..

Rock said he talked with Eminem’s manager, Paul Rosenberg, at last week’s Detroit Pistons opener at Little Caesars Arena. Right-leaning Rock and left-leaning Eminem have been become high-profile political lightning rods.
“Let’s not let this divide us,” Rock said he told Rosenberg. Eminem, on the heels of a viral rap blasting President Donald Trump, was loudly cheered at the start of the game. Rock, shown onscreen in the arena, drew boos from some in the crowd.
Rock said as public hype grew around the Senate talk this year, even people in his circle who were “in on the joke” started to take it seriously.

  17. Visa waiver is Homeland Security, Sammy. As is admission with a visa, for that matter. Or anything else that involves crossing our border. The State Department’s job ends when it issues the visa at a consulate overseas. And Homeland Security is essentially police.
