Trump Sides with Democrats Over Republicans As Trumpers Cheer

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 9:47 pm

It’s time for all good Trump cultists to exercise your smiling muscles. Get ready to justify, rationalize, and applaud:

President Donald Trump sided with Democrats on adding a three-month extension of the U.S. debt limit and government spending to a hurricane-relief bill over the arguments of fellow Republicans, who pressed for a longer debt extension.

. . . .

Trump, after meeting with congressional leaders Wednesday at the White House, told reporters on Air Force One that the deal with Democrats would be “very good.”

“We agreed to a three-month extension on debt ceiling, which they consider to be sacred — very important — always we’ll agree on debt ceiling automatically because of the importance of it,” the president said.

Republicans used to negotiate for some small measure of fiscal responsibility (remember “sequestration”?) in return for raising the debt ceiling. None of that any more! Always announce that you will always give in, is the first tactic of any successful negotiator. Haven’t you read The Art of the Deal?

“The president agreed with Senator Schumer and Congresswoman Pelosi to do a three-month CR and debt ceiling until December,” said McConnell, a Kentucky Republican. . . .

Just hours earlier, House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin — who was in the meeting with Trump — had told reporters the Democratic proposal was “unworkable” and “ridiculous.”

Trumpers, who argued that one must vote Trump during the 2016 elections because the alternative was supporting a Democrat, were jubilant at Trump’s decision to support Democrats Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi over Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell:

Start your own obsequious pro-Trump spin now! It’s all the rage! Suggested line of defense: “anything that makes Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan angry is good.” (Do not recall that Ryan and McConnell called for Trump to be elected over Hillary. That never happened, citizen — and such thoughts are doubleplusungood.) If you twist yourself into a big enough pretzel, you’ll convince yourself that supporting Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi is the height of conservatism. The tools quoted above managed it. Why not you?

Hackery: it’s not just for breakfast any more!

This can only end with Trump switching parties and becoming a Democrat, and taking 1/3 of the Republican party with him. They’ll yell about the importance of fighting the left as they vote in Pelosi and Schumer, institute single-payer, expand entitlements, impose “ze and zir” transgender pronouns on America — and of course “automatically” agree to those “sacred” debt ceiling hikes. They’re “very important,” don’t you know.

At least I’ll never have to listen to people talking about how Trump fights the left any more.

Right?

Right?

  4. I still remember when this blog took on the left.

The show American Horror Story, which few watch any more and fewer talk about, will use election night 2016 as the horror, dread, and existential panic in every liberal’s and NeverTrumper’s permanently-infarcted hearts.

What is the thing that scares you the most?, an unknown voice asks in the beginning of the trailer.

“It is now official,” a newsman says on TV, as if in response to the question. “Donald Trump is now the president of the United States.”

And then the main character issues a primal scream.

Not even making this up. The trailer is embedded below the fold.

  11. He is just the symptom. The entire government is dysfunctional, mainly because Congress has found a way to hide under their desks. They simply let the president and the bureaucracy rule the land and then they can have show trials and pouty interviews on Sunday mornings.

It’s going to be a rough patch for the republic, and I’ve made my peace with that. Ride out the decline. Live life with the most meaning you can. We’re on Flight 93 and we’re still in the air but…

  12. I’ve linked this book before, but link it here again because it has an entire chapter devoted to splendid examples of how desperately the marks, the chumps, the suckers, the victims of con men, fight against every attempt to point out to them that they’ve been bamboozled, and how they continue to insist that the con artists are wonderful, righteous, and — well, insert [any description you choose from hatefulfeet about Trump here].

The Confidence Game: Why We Fall for It . . . Every Time (2016), by Maria Konnikova. Sample:

In June 2014, a so-called suckers list of people who had fallen for multiple scams surfaced in England, It had been passed on from shady group to shady group, sold to willing bidders, until law enforcement had gotten hold of its contents. It was 160,000 names long. When authorities began contacting some of the individuals on the list, they were met with surprising resistance. I’ve never been scammed, the victims insisted.

And this, which will describe how Trump will indeed use this betrayal, this connivance with Harry Reid & Nancy Pelosi, to further cement his Trumpkin base:

A loss, a good confidence artist knows, doesn’t spell the end: that’s why the breakdown sucks the mark in further rather than letting him off the hook. Under the right circumstances, a loss can signal a deepening of commitment.

    And this:

The sunk-cost effect gives us a continued, strong motivation to believe in something even when the landscape has changed significantly since we first invested ourselves in it.

    ….

The more and the longer we’ve invested in something, the more likely the sunk-cost argument is to get the better of both our reason and our perception.

    ….

Once we’re in the home stretch of the confidence game, our investment renders us unable to be objective about the past evidence; we ignore the breakdown and open the way for the send because we refuse to admit we could have been wrong. We persist in acting as we did before, despite the growing evidence that we should change course. And so of course the con is successful: the touch goes off without a hitch, and we’re left completely fleeced.

I do not direct this remark at those who voted for Trump in the general as a supposed least-worst alternative.

But every Trumpkin who voted for him in the primary has been conclusively revealed today, by Trump, to be a sucker and a chump. He’s just another damned New York limousine liberal, and when you strip away the flim-flam, at bottom he’s no different in kind from Hillary Clinton. That is going to become increasingly apparent as he goes farther and farther off the rails. Hell, he might run as a Democrat in 2020 — that’s just a matter of shifting his target audience for the con.

“The real problem today is that Trump joined the Democrats on the issue of the debt ceiling.

“Trump dove into the swamp and joined the Democrats. The fact that Mr. Trump agreed to Mr. Schumer’s proposal shows that the president is “utterly clueless about how the Hill operates,” a source said to the Wash Times.

“The Republicans have reason join the Dems on impeachment.”

  18. Will Social Security benefit payments stop coming?

Social Security recipients will probably be largely unaffected by a shutdown. Checks for seniors, those with disabilities and survivors will go out as usual. But Social Security Administration employees could face furloughs.

Donald Trump is not now, and never has been, a Republican.

Donald Trump is not now, and never has been, a conservative.

Donald Trump is not now, and never has been, a proponent of the Rule of Law.

Donald Trump is not now, and never has been, interested in draining the swamp. He is the swamp.

If you voted for Donald Trump in any GOP primary under the assumption, or even the hope, that he was any one or more of these things, you are a sucker, a dupe, a mark, and a fool. Repent ye of these things and open your eyes; then you can at least be an ex-sucker.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  20. Perhaps you get the sense that I’m angry at Trump tonight. I am.

But that’s nothing new. What’s new is that tonight, my worst fears are fully confirmed. I always thought this dog would sh*t the Oval Office carpet and claim it’s caviar. Tonight I’m angry at the people who let the mutt in.

    We won’t.

I am frustrated as all get out. However, I am not angry with DJT. A snake who bites is just doing its job. My anger is at the generations who refused to see and accept limitations. The scope of the tragedy of the fall of our republic can not be overstated. We’re just about there.

  23. Well, if Trump declares himself a Democrat and takes the RINOs with him, it would certainly kill any chances of President Hillary. It would also identify the RINOs for all to see and work toward replacing and it just might restore the Democratic Party to the party of the working mane from the clown show it has become.

    Jay Dee (7ee36c)

  24. Beldar, you’re being optimistic thinking he’ll run as a Democrat in 2020. I said it several months ago, Trump’ll switch his party affiliation before 18 months is up. It’s not the GOP “establishment” that’s a problem, they’re political opportunists with no principles, it’s the handful of actual conservatives who are managing to block Trump. Trump switches parties and suddenly he’s got a majority in Congress he can work with – the Dems and the GOPportunists – and, even better, suddenly the media is fawning all over him as a lovable rogue, a little rough around the edges, but always entertaining, just a swell guy. Russia goes away, Comey goes away, Mueller goes away, financial irregularities and cronyism and self-dealing, it all goes away and everybody loves Uncle Donald.

    Jerryskids (3308c1)

  25. I don’t know who Bill Mitchell is, but Mike Cernovich is a nothing punk who became a-little-bit-more-than-nothing with Trump’s election. He’s emblematic of the rabid Trumpkins for whom Trump can do no wrong because that would be an existential crisis for them.

    nk (9651fb)

  26. But don’t you think that this stuff we’ve been seeing this week is why Spicer, Priebus, Bannon and Gorka bailed out? These are guys who still have futures and don’t want them destroyed by an demented New York orange-skinned pansy. The ones sticking with Trump are the guys with nowhere else to go except a retirement community.

    nk (9651fb)

  27. It’s not the GOP “establishment” that’s a problem, they’re political opportunists with no principles, it’s the handful of actual conservatives who are managing to block Trump.

If the bulk of the GOP in Congress lack any principles, and would work together with Pelosi and Schumer, why didn’t they team up with Obama to pass his full wish list of immigration, wealth-distribution and gun control legislation?

Not a single Republican voted for the 2009 stimulus, or for Obamacare. All they gave Obama was continuing resolutions to keep the government from shutting down, the combined effect of which were to reduce federal government spending from 24.4% of GDP (in 2009) to 20.9% of GDP (in 2016). Under Reagan, the average was 21.8%.

In fact, about 90-95% of the GOP congressmen/senators are conservatives to one degree or another.

Trump is the opportunist whose only principle is self-worship.

    Dave (445e97)

  28. Remind me: who controlled the House back then?

    Rings a faint bell.

Seem to recall that Reagan also said one of the big disappointments of his Presidency was a failure to curtail federal spending, i.e. a Democrat Congress running amok.

He teased his base with the promise to eliminate DACA, then did so with a six-month window for Congress to write it into law, at which time he’d revisit it if Congress chose not to act.

With this, it really is the Art of the Deal: he just told Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell that he was willing to dance with someone else if the GOP kept stepping on his toes. His entire history is one of being willing to change dance partners: ask Hillary Clinton, to whom he made contributions in 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007. Hell, ask Marla Maples!

President Trump has positioned himself to get several things:

1 – The Wall (Republican policy)
    2 – DACA (Democratic policy
3 – Repeal Obaminablecare (Republican policy)
4 – Single-payer plan, Medicare for all (Democratic policy)
5 – Stricter (non-DACA) immigration enforcement (Republican policy)
6 – Increased infrastructure spending (Democratic policy)

We knew, all along, from his proposals well before the election, that he was no deficit hawk. I’ll admit to having some hopes from his FY2018 budget proposal that he might be willing to cut spending, but the infrastructure plan wasn’t in there; that’ll be coming soon.

Be thankful we got Neil Gorsuch, and pray that Anthony Kennedy and Ruth Ginsburg have to retire very soon; other than that, we’ll get very little from his President.

Consequently, Trump and his loyal supporters are not amused, in fact they’re screaming pissed off, fed-up, and contemplating the pros and cons of a retaliation against the entire DC swamp so sudden and so therough as to put genocide into a political context.

The monstrous tantrum, combined with bogus allegations of collusion and Russian interference in the election, that rejected Democrats and their masters in the media are inflicting on the nation has been more than tiresome enough to endure, but when nearly the entire leftist DC federal bureaucracy adopts the tactics of massive resistance to legitimate elected authority it’s time they all got sent packing, some of them to prison, and the sooner the better.

The GOP Congress has had over 6 months to put their house in order and make progress fulfilling the campaign promises that got them elected, but cowardly party leaders have consistently failed our President at nearly every turn that counted.

But in calls with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi Thursday morning, Trump raved about the positive news coverage it had received, according to people familiar with the calls, and he seemed very pleased with his decision.

Trump specifically mentioned TV segments praising the deal and indicated he’d been watching in a call with Schumer, two people said. And he was jovial in a call with Pelosi and agreed to send a tweet she asked for about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, these people said, while also mentioning the attention the deal had gotten. He indicated to both leaders he would be willing to work together again.

When have the conservatives blocked Trump? Conservatives weren’t the ones who stopped the ObamaCare bill — that was the moderates. Conservatives didn’t stop Trump’s deal with the Democrats on the debt ceiling. In fact, the only thing conservatives have done so far is push Trump to nominate conservative judges like Gorsuch and others — which seems to be the most popular thing (to Republicans and conservatives) that Trump has done so far.

Trump is not willing to try to work with a GOP Congress because he is too impatient and it doesn’t get him the attention and approval he craves. Instead, he has to share credit and blame. But our system shouldn’t work this way. This is Trump’s version of Obama’s executive orders: It excludes the elected Republican Senators and Congressmen/women across the country the GOP worked so hard to elect, plus there will be little possibility of court review.

Do a deal with Democrats in Congress and a few Republicans to authorize DACA? No court will touch that. Do a deal on abortion, or comprehensive immigration reform, or climate change, or how judges are picked? Ditto. And the minority party is driving this process.
