Two Female Experts On Islam Dismissed By Female Democrat Senators

Filed under: General — Dana @ 3:18 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Prior to their testifying before a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs subcommittee hearing called “Ideology and Terror: Understanding the Tools, Tactics, and Techniques of Violent Extremism,” New Republic writer Sarah Jones labeled scheduled witnesses Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Asra Nomani as “two of the worst possible “experts” on Islam”. Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Research Fellow at the Hoover Institute, is a former Muslim, who was born in Somalia and endured female genital mutilation as a little girl (a point conveniently ignored by Jones), and is an acclaimed feminist, author and activist who heads up the AHA Foundation, which works to end FGM and honor violence against women in the West. Asra Nomani is a Muslim immigrant who came to the U.S. from India as a child. She is a former professor at Georgetown, a journalist, and one of the founders of the Muslim Reform Movement. Nomani is known for boldly standing up for women’s rights in her mosque where she opined that women be allowed to pray in the segregated male-only hall. While her work as a reformer has been met with expected criticism, it was her Washington Post op-ed, published right after the presidential election, that caused a stir. In her op-ed, Nomani explained why she voted for Donald Trump, citing her concern and opposition to President Obama’s stand on Islam, “As a liberal Muslim who has experienced, first-hand, Islamic extremism in this world, I have been opposed to the decision by President Obama and the Democratic Party to tap dance around the ‘Islam’ in Islamic State”. She believed that a Clinton presidency would be no different.

Thus, with a complete lack of self-awareness, Jones, who amusingly relies on the Southern Poverty Law Center to support her attack on the women, offered her “professional” estimation of these two “non-experts”:

Hirsi Ali and Nomani aren’t reliable witnesses, and their extreme views ought to disqualify them from any platform dependent on expertise. On Wednesday, they’ll simply tell Senate Republicans exactly what they want to hear about Islam. It won’t be factual, but for Republicans, it won’t matter.

At the hearing last week, both Nomani and Hirsi Ali testified as planned, and yet they were virtually dismissed by four female Democratic senators:

On Wednesday, Democratic senators appeared to ignore Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Asra Nomani after they gave brief testimonies on the ideology of Islamism at a U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs hearing, sparking a social media outcry.

It was the first time a Senate hearing was devoted to discussing the ideas motivating both violent and nonviolent Islamist movements around the world, but, through a strategy of deflection and demonization, the Democratic senators — mostly women — ignored the scholarly and lived expertise of Hirsi Ali and Nomani.

Tensions were high even before the hearing began. A Muslim man wearing a prayer cap attempted to disrupt the event by yelling at Hirsi Ali, an ex-Muslim and Somali-born human rights activist, a witness who was in the room said.

The contentious atmosphere carried on to the committee members themselves as Democratic committee leader, Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri, expressed her disagreement with the premise of the hearing, called by Republican Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin.

“Anyone who twists or distorts religion to a place of evil is an exception to the rule,” she said. “We should not focus on religion.” McCaskill proceeded to lecture the panelists on “freedom of religion” in the United States.

“No evil should ever be allowed to distort these premises,” she continued. “I’m worried, honestly, that this hearing will underline that.”

Hirsi Ali responded to the attack:

“We haven’t paid as much attention to those people who get into the hearts and minds of vulnerable people and turn them toward the idea that it’s OK to run your car over people, to kill homosexuals, to kill apostates,” Hirsi Ali said. “I came and accepted [Ron Johnson’s] invitation to only talk about that group, not to vilify or stigmatize those Muslims who accentuate their spirituality.”

Sen. Johnson also addressed the issue by noting that the two experts had been “careful to distinguish between Muslims who practice their faith peacefully as opposed to political Islamists”.

It’s telling that four female Democratic senators, all of whom publicly proclaim their ardent support of women’s rights, demonstrated that their support is limited to only a certain kind of women. Senators Maggie Hassan (NH), Claire McCaskill (MO), Heidi Heitkamp (ND) and Kamala Harris (D-CA) were not terribly interested in what two female experts had to say or the unique first-hand perspectives they provided. Female senators, one assumes, that, along with New Republic’s Sarah Jones, still retain fully intact genitalia. Ironically, these same senators instead turned to the two male witnesses that were also testifying at the hearing. It’s humorous to see a group of staunch feminists ignore two fellow feminists in favor of the men in the room…

Video of the hearing here. It is well worth watching in full (but it’s long).

Note: One of the senators involved in the dismissal of the two experts, Kamala Harris, recently found herself admonished for her rudeness when she continued to interrupt male colleagues as they attempted to answer questions on the Senate floor. Sensing an opportunity to push the left’s weary accusation of sexism, Harris, unabashedly playing the victim, began a fundraising campaign:

Untitled

These slogans help women take back power over the very scenarios that seek to disenfranchise them. When women are reminded their place in society through reprimands and dis-empowering statements, the very re-appropriation of these statements helps women reshape the narrative.

Unexplained by Harris, however, is why two courageous feminists who have demonstrated both courtesy and unquestionable and unflagging courage in their fight for the protections and advancement of women everywhere, were virtually ignored by Harris and her fellow Democrats. At the very least, why didn’t the senators show their rousing support for fellow-women persisting in some very risky trenches, let alone taking advantage of the opportunity to draw from their wealth of knowledge and experience? But I think we all know the answer to this.

  7. That quote by Nixon sounds quaint today. Since now we all know women can do anything a man or transgender can do and they are steady as the Northern Star (thanks, Caesar) and highly rational and never emotional. Especially during their periods. Hell, just look how well Hillary took her loss, or just watch five minutes of Maxine Waters. Absolutely the definition of rationality.

  11. Beware deceptively edited clips of this woman. I’ve already seen some — replayed, in fact, on FOX — which don’t show her constantly, incessantly speaking over and interrupting the witnesses. Instead she clips the lead-in and only shows herself being reprimanded very lightly and politely by the chair, and she wants to claim thereby to be a poor, victimized woman of color being abused by her sexist, racist, while male colleagues.

She is a very dangerous demagogue and I think she’s just stepped into the front-runner role for the Dem nomination in 2020, when she’ll run as the female Obama.

That said: John McCain, you must know better than to usurp the chair’s role and play into Harris’ narrative! That was absolute political malpractice.

  31. @ kish (#16), who wrote:

[Harris] has a better resume than [Obama] did at the equivalent point in his career.

It sort of depends which eye you squint through. I grant that she apparently has successfully held down several full-time jobs that required her to show up on a regular basis as a requirement of collecting a paycheck, and she’s been a courtroom lawyer, which he wasn’t. She doesn’t have the Harvard or HLR credentials or the U Chicago senior instructorship, and it took her two tries to pass the CA bar, whereas I believe I recall confirming way back when that based on his graduation and bar admission dates, Obama apparently passed the IL bar the first time he took it. On the whole, I think the “real world vs. ivory tower” issue resolves in her favor fairly decisively, but there are still Ivy Leaguers who are going to cock an eyebrow until they catch themselves. I think it ultimately won’t make a hill of beans to her prospects in the Democratic Party, no more than it did for Obama that he had never held a serious job for any reasonable period of time, never actually done any legislating, never was much of a lawyer, and basically was an empty suit, but a very nicely tailored one with the best labels.

What she is not, and I don’t think she’s capable of being, is No-Drama Obama. I’m not seeing her doing the fingertips on shoulders brush-off while lip-syncing to Tailor Swift’s “Shake It Off!” This ad slogan nails it — she should just be honest, drop the “Courage Not Courtesy” stuff, and say, “We’re Proud of Being @ssholes!” as her response to “Make America Great Again!”

We might as well just get rid of the Electoral College, I’m thinking, and just make the election depend on a one-season reality TV series featuring monster trucks, vats of spiders, and the candidates clowns themselves. Text MAGA for TEAM TRUMP, text WPBA for KAMALA’s SJ-WARRIORS, only $3 plus applicable data rates, no more than one vote per person per half-hour. But every night, for the whole election season. We’ve got ratings to protect, people! RATINGS!

She is able to get away with her crude intolerance—against Jews, women, “whites” and anyone else who doesn’t embrace her hatreds—because in the victimhood Olympics that overdetermines so much of today’s left-wing politics, Muslims are agreed to rank highest. 47. Happy Fathers Day guys. Here’s what I got as my Father’s Day gift: My foster son and his wife and kids will NOT be at our celebratory BBQ/pool party today. It seems his eldest son will no longer come to fopa’s house because we are white racists. That is correct. My black foster son’s son has decided ALL white people are racist and won’t even associate with his own family.

My son was arguing with him since Thursday and had thought he’d change his mind by today to no avail. It seems someone at his school has determined that since Trump was elected “by white people” black people should segregate themselves. He no longer considers me his “fopa” and even my Asian wife is off limits. Asians exploit blacks in the ghetto, you see. My son was in tears and my daughter-in-law was so embarrassed she couldn’t speak to June on the phone.

But wait, there’s more. He has determined the only way for black Americans to be equal is to convert to Islam. This kid is 15 years old. My son is fit to be tied and has no idea what to do. He and his wife are hysterical.

I never had kids of my own and my foster kids are all I have. This man is a good, hard working all American family man. I am very proud of what he has made of his life. He began life as a cast away kid but once we showed him structure, love and guidance he grew into a wonderful person. I really don’t know what to do. I’m sure when all the family gets here around 2pm they will add their two cents.

What the hell is going on in our country? When I tell my sister this there’s gonna be an explosion. She really loves my boy and his kids too. This is gonna kill her.

There’s a set of people who are NFL fans and who pay the money that makes so much money for its owners, players, and other personnel.

There’s another set of people who think Mr. Kaepernick is a patriotic farseer who’s being discriminated against for his race because of his politics. (I know, that’s a logical non sequitur, but that’s the way this particular set is defined.)

What Mr. Kaepernick fails to understand is that there aren’t many members of one set who are also members of the other. If his football skills were undoubted, the lack of correspondence between the two sets wouldn’t matter nearly so much. They are, though, so it does.

  54. I complimented Jay Sekulow here the other day, and I do in general have a good opinion of him. But his appearance as a Trump surrogate on Fox News Sunday this morning was a disaster for him and his client. Of course Chris Wallace asked him some tough questions, including some with bad premises that required correction. But Sekulow came across like a guy who’s so tightly wound right now that he might go postal at any moment, and the interview deteriorated into a very ugly back-and-forth that Wallace got the better of. A lawyer has to project confident, easy grace even when — indeed, especially when — under stress, and Sekulow did the opposite of that today in this interview.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  55. Hoagie,

I’m sorry this happened today but it sounds like you have a wonderful son and daughter-in-law. I know this is hard for them, too, but I bet they have the tenacity and values to get through it.

Do you remember Stashiu? He taught me something important that your story reminded me of. He said all anger comes from fear. I disagreed at first but after reading more and thinking about it, I realized he was right. Thus, my humble suggestion (because every family is different and only they can find the answers that work for them) is that you consider graciously telling your son that grandson doesn’t need to come if he doesn’t want to, and son shouldn’t worry about it.

But as a favor to his grandparents, you would like grandson to sit down with his father and tell him what he is afraid of. He will disagree and it will make him mad, but maybe in the long run it will help your son open a dialogue with your grandson and help both of them look at this in a fresh way.

God sometimes has a weird sense of humor. But as nk said, this is mild compared to what some fifteen year olds get into. Let your son and daughter in law sort it out, and depend on the tincture of time to get some maturity into your grandson’s head.

  64. Sen. Johnson also addressed the issue by noting that the two experts had been “careful to distinguish between Muslims who practice their faith peacefully as opposed to political Islamists”.

This is insane. At the core of mainstream Islamic theology is the principle that Islam is not Islam without political authority and military power.

This is why the hijra (622 A.D.) is year one in the Islamic calendar. It’s when Muhammad who was powerless in Mecca emigrated to Madinah and acquired political authority and became essentially a warlord.

    https://historyofislam.com/contents/the-age-of-faith/the-significance-of-the-hijrah-622-ce/

…Throughout the history of Islam, the migration was a transitional line between the two major eras, regarding to the message of Islam; the era of Makkah and the era of Madinah. In its essence, this signified a transition from one phase to another, as follows:

    – Transition, which is most significantly for early Muslims, to the phase in which Islam was not only the act of worship, but a way of life. This was encompassing (surrounding) politics, economy, social interactions and every other aspect of life. This was the first time when Islam was looked upon as a comprehensive religion.

    – Transition from a position where Muslims represented a small group of people, surrounded by enemies and threatened by death, to the position of a regional power with a strong central leadership. This was one that was surrounded by a large number of followers and allies.

    – Transition from being a simple Islamic group of believers, to being the Islamic nation. This was an organized Islamic state, with a central leadership and other organizations…

Muhammad, according to the officially accepted Islamic historical narrative (which is complete BS but Muslims believe it so we have to talk about it as if it’s real) had been receiving revelation for 12 years in Mecca. Yet when he first started receiving revelation is not year one. Why not? Because without governing authority and the means to wage jihad Islam is not Islam. All the peaceful (actually self-serving) Meccan verses are according to traditional, mainstream Islamic scholarship pre-Islamic. Because they precede the Islamic era.

This is also why Hasan al-Banna founded the Muslim Brotherhood in 1928. Because Kemal Ataturk abolished the Ottoman caliphate in 1924. Without the caliph, who in addition to being a religious authority the caliph was also a political and military authority, Islam was not Islam. Again, why? Because offensive jihad, the open-ended declaration of war against non-Muslims simply because they are not Muslims is a religious obligation. But only the Caliph can order it. Al-Banna was horrified and angered by what Ataturk had done, and formed the original terrorist organization with the goal of restoring the Caliphate.

The Islamic State is nothing new. This is basic history, and none of our elected representatives or for that matter our natsec or intel officials know it.

We are doomed if we don’t correct this.

  65. Do you remember Stashiu? He taught me something important that your story reminded me of. He said all anger comes from fear. I disagreed at first but after reading more and thinking about it, I realized he was right…

Have you really thought this through, DRJ? Even Jesus could get angry.

    Matthew 21

11The crowds replied, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” 12Then Jesus went into the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those selling doves. 13And He declared to them, “It is written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer.’ But you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”…

And of course so could God the Father.

    Matthew 26

39Going a little farther, He fell facedown and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.”

The cup Jesus was referring to was the cup of God’s wrath.

I don’t understand how an omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient God could experience anger stemming from fear. In fact, I submit it’s impossible. So I can’t agree that all anger stems from fear. I was taught from an early age that their is such a thing as righteous anger. There are things that people should get angry over. Such as the abuse of a child.

I’m truly baffled how Islam became the cause that the Left has decided supercedes all other causes.

I’m baffled by where you came up with that. In other words. whle they normally wouldn’t have anything to do with any religious preacher who wss against homosexuality, if its an Islamic preacher, it suddenly doesn’t matter. If they are normally against any limitations on women, when it comes to Moslems they don’t care. They treat with much more respect than Mormons.

  67. DRJ, just to be clear in case I wasn’t, what Hoagie is dealing with is not a case of righteous anger.

  68. DCSCA @ 6/18/2017 @ 2:05 pm, you can stop now. We don’t need any more of your straw men to know you’re an @$$maggot. You’ve firmly established your bonafides in that regard. You are, in fact, the @$$maggot’s @$$maggot. Please don’t comment again unless you want to let us know when you’re being inducted into the @$$maggot’s Hall of Fame.

Every sane individual, the kind of individual you don’t allow in your social circles apparently, understands that simply asking how we got to the point where a black 15 year old has been so indoctrinated to think it’s OK to hate all white people and Asians including their own family members is a long way from insisting we were perfect in every way when we were 15.

But keep it up. If there isn’t an @$$maggots Hall of Fame we’ll start a GoFundMe page and create one just for you.

  76. First of all I want to thank you guys for your comments on my family situation yesterday.

It turned out that my son Marcus, his wife Venice and their youngest boy Tim did make the 41/2 hour drive from Upper St. Clair to my house and arrived around 4 pm. Venice is of mixed race herself as her mother is white and father black so her parents are being ostracized by Marc Jr. also.

It seems these ideas were not “taught” to him by the school so much as *at* the school. It began with one of the other kids parents seeing Marcus at the high school during the November election and was insulted that Marcus was a Republican and supported Trump. No *real* black people are Republican you see. Anyway, it appears the word got around first among the black parents then the kids and Marcus Jr. was getting heat about his “honkey-loving fascist dad”.

Marcus reminded his son how both his fopa (me) and his aunt Jeannie (my sister) marched for civil rights down south when I was 15. Junior’s answer was that they don’t need us or any other white folks to march for them.

I can see this has profoundly hurt my son and daughter-in-law. They see this as a complete repudiation of all they have taught the boys about God, Freedom, Love, Family and Equality. Frankly, I have no idea what to tell them. For the first time in my life there is nothing my experience can do about it. I just suggested that Marcus not fight with the boy or deliberately cause arguments yet at the same time not tip-toe around. After all, it is his house, he’s the father and the kid is 15 not 25.

Only time will tell with this kid. My friend Ben and his family were there and since he’s black I asked if I’m missing something and would he like to add something. He said it was all good. Nothing he could add.

    We shall see.

  77. Keep the faith, Hoagie. Maybe the kid will come around.
