Trump v. Musk -Let The Games Begin Open Thread

Filed under: General — Dana @ 2:24 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Elon Musk and Donald Trump are solidifying their breakup online (Musk on X and Trump on Truth Social). It’s both a big waste of time for POTUS to be involved in a tit-for-tat with the world’s richest man, and yet it keeps Trump preoccupied with his favorite thing: trashing his enemies. That then leaves him momentarily unable to further wreck the country. But it is entertaining. Let the games begin!

UPDATE BY PATTERICO: Sometimes you see two young children fighting like crazy – they hate each other, and they’re fighting in a park, and you try and pull them apart, they don’t want to be pulled. Sometimes you’re better off letting them fight for a while and then pulling them apart.

Or not.

  10. Ooof:

The escalating dispute between President Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Thursday sent the car maker to a market-value decline of around $152.4 billion, its biggest one-day slide on record, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Tesla has now shed about $237.2 billion in market value over the past five sessions, notching its worst five-day market-cap loss since the stretch ended Jan. 2. More than 276 million Tesla shares have changed hands during today’s session, the most since January 2023.

  12. From The Breakup thread:

Billionaire Elon Musk seemed to suggest support of a third political party as he escalated a growing fight with President Trump that boiled over Thursday.

“Is it time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle,” Musk wrote in a post on social platform X to his more than 200 million followers on the site, which he owns.

    You may get the opportunity:

Musk said in a post on X Thursday that SpaceX “will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately” in light of Trump’s statement that floated canceling the billionaire’s government contracts and subsidies.

The SpaceX CEO included a screenshot of Trump’s earlier Truth Social post, which said terminating Musk’s government contracts would be the “easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars.”
    ………..
Since 2020, NASA has relied on SpaceX’s Dragon to transport astronauts to and from orbit. The agency, which retired its space shuttle program in 2011, depended on Russian Soyuz spacecraft for crewed missions prior to partnering with SpaceX.
    ………..
Steve Bannon, who served as the White House chief strategist in Trump’s first term, said in an interview Thursday that Trump should act immediately in response to Musk’s announcement about decommissioning the Dragon spacecraft.

“President Trump tonight should sign an executive order calling for the Defense Production Act,” Bannon said, referring to a federal law that grants the president authority to influence or control domestic industry in the name of national defense, “and seize SpaceX tonight before midnight.”

This system where the government seizes the means of production in the name of the people seems like it would make industry very efficient and responsive.

  21. Trump Torches Tesla Dealership

Firefighters were called to the scene after several eyewitnesses claimed to have seen President Trump setting fire to a local Tesla dealership this morning.

The event seems to coincide with a bitter public falling out between Trump and Musk over a spending bill currently moving through Congress.

“I thought we were friends, Elon! What happened to us?” President Trump reportedly cried as he lobbed a Molotov cocktail into the windshield of a 2025 Tesla Model 3. “I never liked Teslas. I always thought they were 3rd-rate cars anyway. And everything in them is computer, and I hate computers. Many people don’t know that, but I actually hate them. They’re terrible, frankly.”

  22. Could this all be elaborately staged kayfabe designed to get the BBB across the finish line?

Next week, taking their cue from Trump, Lindsay Graham and a few other senate invertebrates announce cosmetic and inconsequential modifications that reduce the budget black hole from $2.5T to $2.49T, while restoring the EV incentives by consigning a few million more dark-skinned children around the world to disease and starvation so the numbers work out.

Musk declares victory and praises Trump’s genius. Trump declares victory and praises Trump’s genius. Trump (of course) chickens out on all the dire consequences he has threatened. Any fence-sitters in the senate have no choice but to pretend their concerns have been addressed.

Anyways, now that everyone has had their fun:

    1) Musk is absolutely right that we need to take the deficits more seriously. That requires reforming entitlements and cutting wasteful programs. Simply moving money around while adding debt is a serious long-term threat.

    2) Musk is also right that Trump’s tariff games are a disaster that are hurting the economy. They are also politically harmful.

    3) Trump is right that there are serious conflicts with Musk influencing policy given his business interests. I don’t think those conflicts change #1 and #2, but they exist and should be acknowledged.

    4) Threatening to cut government contracts because of a personal beef is wrong and corrupt. It’s also a game that would harm Americans.

    5) Musk is able to much better serve Americans and humanity focusing on developing Space X, Tesla, Nueuralink etc

    5) X’s algorithm and moderation policies still have series issues. And getting support is impossible.

    6) Trump and Musk should privately work out their differences and stop taking everything personally because an open fight between them doesn’t serve anyone. Also, Trump should stop doing that thing where he pretends that anyone who criticizes anything he does has secret bad unrelated motives.

If Trump could semi-resolve with Zelenskyy, maybe he could with Musk, too. However, I don’t see Musk yielding to Trump’s Big Ugly Debt Killing Bill or on tariffs, because he happens to be right on both counts.

  49. Yesterday, Merz was compelled to educate Trump on Ukrainian and Russian drone/missile strikes, that the Ukrainians are striking Russian military targets, which is legitimate under the rules of war, while Putin hits civilian targets practically daily, therefore are terrorist attacks.

The irony is that Trump still doesn’t (or won’t) understand the dynamics of Putin’s War Against Ukraine. This isn’t two kids fighting in the schoolyard, this is the Russian bully trying to take the weaker Ukrainian kid’s lunch money, and the underdog is resisting the theft.

Trump and Elon aren’t the only internet troll leaders here, because Putin is one of them, too.

Russian official said that the nation could offer American billionaire Elon Musk political asylum over his fierce dispute with U.S. President Donald Trump.

The U.S. president and the world’s richest man have had a dramatic fallout, leaving many wondering what will come of the relationship.

The comments come as tensions between Washington and Moscow remain high as ceasefire talks for the Russia-Ukraine war have stalled, with the last round of negotiations lasting just 90 minutes with little progress outside of an agreement to release prisoners on both sides.

    Paul Montagu (7eb32e)

Musk should hope that Trump pulls contracts from his company. The punitive damages will be awesome.

    Kevin M (a9545f) — 6/5/2025 @ 1:49 pm

Contracts have multiple termination clauses, such as termination for convenience, for cause, default, failure to comply with laws or regulatory compliance, breach of warranty, improper consideration, etc. so it shouldn’t be a problem to find an excuse; much like the grant agreement cancellations cancelled by the administration.

He should file suit over the threats.

Not sure what grounds Musk would have for a lawsuit for something that hasn’t occurred.

    Rip Murdock (d2a2a8)

  53. Musk’s reported drug use could be grounds, since federal law requires contractors to maintain a drug-free workplace.

    Rip Murdock (d2a2a8)

  54. Irony: Trump is going to attempt to bankrupt a leading US car maker.

    Kevin M (a9545f)

The threats tanked the stock, harming the company and Musk.

  57. “Unless there’s a kiss-and-make-up, MAGA will throw out Musk like they threw out DeSantis.”

I wonder how “I’m sorry to have implied that you are a sex offender” is going to work?

And then, how does “Oh and you’re a drug user and I’m going to cancel all your government contracts” disappear?

It was a relationship of convenience. Trump got his campaign funding….Musk got to jump around with a chainsaw and hang out at the White House…while Tesla burned.

Sure looks like Musk got short changed, but who would have thought!? In Trump’s meager defense, DOGE really was BS on fire. What disastrous execution. If that is genius, I must be missing something.

Trump will move on but having a crazy rich guy out there lurking and itching to burn you down, can’t be a good feeling. DeSantis ultimately had a Bic lighter. Musk’s got a flamethrower and satellites that can always find you….our modern day Blofeld. I guess it’s good advice to just watch them fight for awhile and tire themselves out. What could go wrong?

That is the question, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Musk will be investigated by the feds because where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Violations include possessing drugs; using drugs before reporting to the office; or at the office.

  61. Rip Murdock (d2a2a8) — 6/6/2025 @ 10:00 am

Tesla’s code of conduct described the electric-vehicle maker as a drug-free workplace and prohibits all employees, including executives, from using them, even out of the office.

Illegal drug use by employees is also in violation of the rules that govern the more than $14 billion in contracts that Musk’s private rocket company, SpaceX, has with the U.S. government for civilian and military space missions.

Federal contracts require that companies comply with the Drug-Free Workplace Act and foster a drug-free culture with programs and policies, regardless of any state laws that may legalize some usage. Contractors can also lose security clearances because of drug abuse, defined as the use of illegal drugs or prescription medications “in a manner that deviates from approved medical direction.”
    ………
Corporate contractors must follow standard NASA guidelines for drug tests that usually check for marijuana and cocaine and have the ability to also test for amphetamines, opiates and PCP.
    ……..
At SpaceX and some of Musk’s other companies, including the tunnel venture Boring Co., executives began warning employees to follow company rules at all times, including to not use illegal drugs, even out of the office, according to people familiar with the warnings.

SpaceX brought in drug-sniffing dogs on a random basis to make sure employees weren’t carrying illegal substances, according to the people.
