Matt Gaetz withdraws as candidate for Attorney General

Filed under: General — Dana @ 10:22 am

[guest post by Dana]

It was just announced that Donald Trump’s choice for attorney general, Matt Gaetz, stepped down from the running:

Matt Gaetz withdraws his bid for attorney general amid sexual misconduct allegations.

Trump’s choice had been hindered by sexual misconduct allegations and a House Ethics Committee investigation.

I have two questions: Why does it matter if a man accused of sexual assault multiple times over, is our attorney general? After all, he’s no different than our President-elect. More than half of the voters clearly have no problem with that sort of “character flaw”. The report says that Republicans were uncomfortable with Gaetz as attorney general. Why? They’ve already evidenced that a functioning moral compass, and respect for the rule of law and the US Constitution, doesn’t matter to them. If Republicans find that Donald Trump is more than acceptable as our President, then why not Matt Gaetz as attorney general?

If you counter this argument of GOP hypocrisy with, “Yes, but the fact that he has stepped down because Republicans were not comfortable with him demonstrates a functioning, moral compass,” I would say to you: As long as Donald Trump is in office, that argument rings hollow.

Then, my second question is: With whom will Trump replace Gaetz?

Trump’s statement on Matt Gaetz’s decision:

I greatly appreciate the recent efforts of Matt Gaetz in seeking approval to be Attorney General. He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect. Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!

  1. Hello.

  2. The difference is Trump didn’t diddle minor-aged kids, far as we know, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Putin has a tape of him and Jeffrey Epstein and young teenager or two.

But that’s where the Trump line is drawn…if you’re not a multi-offending statutory rapist, you can be a Trump nominee.

  4. They’re all abusive perverts.

Hegseth paid a woman off after reportedly drugging and attacking her at a political conference. McMahon is being accused of enabling the Mel Phillips “Ring Boy” abuse.

And let’s spare a thought for his “advisor” from the first go-round, George Nader, currently serving five years for the sexual abuse of minors and CSAM, and another 1.6 for funneling bribes from the UAE to… certain US political action committees.

If Epstein were still alive, Gaetz may not have had the chance to drop out.

Got it. Was actually hiking up a hill when I heard the news and stopped to do a quick post – without my readers. Fixed now.

  10. McConnell turned out to be good for something.

The collapse of Mr. Gaetz’s selection underscored the haphazard way that Mr. Trump has gone about assembling his new administration. He picked Mr. Gaetz almost on a whim last week without extensive vetting, knowing that allegations were out there, but essentially daring Senate Republicans to accept him anyway.

Mr. Gaetz told people close to him that he concluded after conversations with senators and their staffs that there were at least four Republican senators who were implacably opposed to his nomination: Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and John Curtis of Utah, who will be seated in January.

As I said here, that would also be a tough nomination fight, given the fact that the DC Bar has recommended a two-year suspension of his law license

Presumably the next nominee will not have accusations of sex trafficking leveled against him/her.

This was all a ruse to prevent the house investigation from coming out.

    Davethulhu (ded184) — 11/21/2024 @ 11:26 am

I wouldn’t be surprised, which is why Gaetz resigned so quickly. He can always rent out his forehead as a billboard.

    Rip Murdock (e63693)

  18. @16 Dana, focusing on an accusation that a politically biased DOJ investigated and dropped is the ultimate “Look! Squirrel!” Why can’t others play, too?

We had four years of “The Big Guy” accusations and whistleblower testimony, but that was ignored as “Look! Squirrel!”, right? Everything that points to Nevertrump and left wing hypocrisy is “Look! Squirrel!”. Because reasons.

False accusations that Trump-inspired militias were threatening FEMA workers just before the election. Now, that was totally legit! No “Look! Squirrel!” there!

    lloyd (6b6c89)

  19. I think Gaetz failed because people really detest him for his role in throwing the House in chaos and his big mouth about his sexual conquests The salacious ethics crimes probably would not have felled him. Paying for underage sex is probably something other Congress critters do.

    Appalled (f2f556)

eh, just because Gaetz (statutory) raped some teens

Just one, maybe twice before she turned 18, and he and the others weren’t told her age.

He was investigated for the federal crime of sex trafficking probably in this connection, and for a whole slew of allegations by the House Ethics Committee.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/20/us/politics/matt-gaetz-house-ethics-report.html

Since the spring of 2021, the ethics panel had been investigating Mr. Gaetz over an array of allegations, including that he had engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, shared inappropriate images or videos on the House floor, misused state identification records, converted campaign funds to personal use and accepted gifts that violated House rules.

Some of these things (like diverting campaign funds) may also be crimes, but didn’t attract the attention of the Justice Department, but might if they became public..

It’d be hard to prove that some expenses were uncalled for.

And this is all besides his general lack of character and playing political games, and probable lack of ability to handle the job properly.

Ethics aside, he doesn’t have the background you would normally consider for the post of Attorney General – it’s not close.

Kamala Harris is tanned, rested and ready.

And has a25% yo 60% chance of eventually becoming Ambassador to Japan. They are often people who strike the Japanese as being extremely important but aren’t.

    Some previous ambassadors:

Former Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield (1961-1977) from June 10, 1977 to December 22, 1988.

Former Vice President and then 1984 losing presidential candidate Walter Mondale from September 21, 1993 to December 15, 1996.

Defeated House Speaker Tom Foley from November 19, 1997 to April 1, 2001.

Former Senate Republican Leader and later (1987-8) White House Chief of Staff Howard Baker from July 5, 2001 to February 17, 2005.

President’s daughter and would be Senator
Caroline Kennedy from November 12, 2013 to January 18, 2017 (she’s now Ambassador to Australia)

Former member of Congress, White House Chief of Staff and mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel from March 25, 2022 to date.

(The post seems to have been vacant for a few years from 2019 to 2022)

Which is the one thing that could most get at the truth. Not directly, because the police would not know if the two knew each other beforehand, or even knew to ask, but there would be something to look into. In the report she claims she was introduced to Hegseth. There’s nothing like the recently memo about her being is minder. Rather she was someone important to the attendees.

It is notable that the woman did NOT go to the police, but to the hospital only, which is not inconsistent with her lying to her husband.

There is an contradiction between what Hegseth
s lawyer says and what she said about her being sober. Lawyer claims video proves it but it was not released. Report says no video was known to exist but it is later mentioned as exempt from disclosures.

She claims memory was going in and out and implies she might have been given some drug by someone other than Hegseth, which however did not immediately take effect.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. compared Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler and disparaged his supporters on his podcast in 2016.
    ………..
In the now-eight-year-old radio show broadcasts, first reported by CNN, Kennedy said Trump was stoking fear on the campaign trail with his rhetoric and compared him to Hitler, the former-segregationist Gov. George Wallace and other divisive leaders. On another episode from 2016, Kennedy also said that Trump was unlike Hitler because “Hitler had like a plan, you know, Hitler was interested in policy.” And Trump did not, he said.

Kennedy also praised then-Rolling Stone writer Matt Taibbi’s description of Trump supporters on the show, reading from an article of his: “We may not have that many outright Nazis in America but we have plenty of cowards and bootlickers.” ……..

    (2) be appointed US Senator by DeSantis to replace Rubio, if the FL governor could politically handle appointing a statutory rapist.
    (3) run for Florida governor or Senator in 2026, which assumes that Florida men and women would vote for a statutory rapist, or
    (4) there’s an opening at FoxNews that Hegseth just vacated, assuming Hegseth doesn’t withdraw or get voted down for his pizda-grabbing and/or categorical lack of qualification for the post.

    That was quick.

And the withdrawal was quick. As late as this morning, Donald Trump was telephoning Senators (to ear what they were telling him)

I expected Gaetz’s nomination to most likely end this way, but not so fast.

CBS News reported that there were eight Republican Senators who had indicated they would not vote to confirm Matt Gaetz.

Donald Trump was anxious to have an Attorney general in place right after he takes office, because he wants to sign or have signed a number of executive orders right away.

Trump just nominated Pam Bondi, who actually has some experience being an AG.

I don’t think she was on a list of 5 names being considered that CBS News broadcast.

It looks to me that Todd Blanche wants avfigrehead over him. This person would take the heat for signing anything of dubious legality.

It could be any number of things. Declarations of emergency. Legal opinions. Etc.

  40. You ever seen a game where a basketball player is hitting every shot from pretty much everywhere on the floor and looks like he or she just can’t miss? Usually it ends when they do something kind of outlandish like launch a 38-footer or try to shoot a sky hook from 18 feet. That sort of shot is colloquially referred to as “a heat check” where the shooter just wants to see what kind of shots they can shoot before finally missing.

I think the appointment of Matt Gaetz as Attorney General was a heat check for Donald Trump. If I were a GOP Senator I still would have wanted him to have a confirmation hearing, because I would have been interested in seeing how he managed to beclown himself in that venue.

Members of President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team were blindsided by the latest details to emerge about a 2017 sexual-assault allegation against Pete Hegseth, increasing their frustration with the man nominated to lead the Pentagon, according to people familiar with the matter.

The transition team, which hadn’t been told about the original allegation before announcing Hegseth, was surprised again late Wednesday night when the Monterey, Calif., city police released a report about the 2017 allegations. The heavily redacted report details a boozy night at a hotel in California, a poolside argument and two conflicting versions of what ultimately took place inside Hegseth’s hotel room.
    ………….
The details about the incident contained in the report, which was released to media the evening before Hegseth was set to meet Thursday with a number of senators, are likely to draw renewed scrutiny to the allegations at a pivotal moment for his nomination. Hegseth was already bracing for a bruising confirmation hearing next year amid questions about the alleged sexual misconduct and his qualifications for the job.
    ………….
The 22-page report cites video-surveillance footage, text messages and interviews with witnesses. While it is unlikely to settle the question of exactly what happened on the evening of Oct. 7, 2017, the report offers a detailed, lurid and often conflicting portrayal of the events leading up to the alleged assault. It also reveals that the police involvement was sparked by a request from the woman for a sexual-assault examination at a clinic four days after the encounter.
    ………….

I don’t think Hegseth will drop out, he’s made of stronger stuff than Gaetz. As I said, every nominee deserves to have a hearing. The Senate Armed Services Committee should be prepared to call everyone involved as a witness.

I recall that a couple of years earlier Gaetz was mulling over leaving Congress to take a position at NewsMax. It’s true that I don’t care for the guy one bit and am unlikely to give him the benefit of the doubt, so it probably won’t surprise anyone to hear that I always figured he was the sort of guy who spends a few terms on Congress just to become famous so he can then move into the lucrative venues of media and “consulting.” I’m kind of surprised it took him this long. He’s the yang to the yin of all of those Democrats (and some Republicans) who spend 30 years in Congress because they love it so and that’s the best that they can possibly do career-wise anyway.

    Allow me to help here.

BEFORE 11-5-2024, some things were fine and understood to be Good and Right: pack the supreme court, and eliminate the filibuster.

    And appoint all manner of people that not even a local McDonalds would hire, e.g., to manage nuclear waste, while stealing luggage at airports; a “Transp. Sec” that was a small-town mayor, justices that cannot define “Woman,” officials insisting that the border is “secure,” even as 10M people came thru w/o impediment, and people who gleefully indicted a major-party a presidential candidate for the first time in 248 years;

But its AFTER 11-5-2024, so all of those old rules and understood conventions have become magically unmentionable. In the middle of the card game, all those KINGS and ACES you got somehow, that were of great value before, are now “valueless” under the “new rules.” And its rude, gauche and diversionary for you to even mention the “old” rules “they” applied.

Because there are no rules. Only what “I want right now.”

A constitutional amendment is not absolutely necessary, a reinterpretation by the Supreme Court as to what the 14 Amendment says is also an option.

But a court decision would be retroactive and not even Stephen Miller wants to open that can of worms, with its resulting genealogical investigations, resulting probably soon in new law grandfathering citizenship in – to probably more people than he wants. He does like the idea of converting people from legal status to illegal status, like by ending TPA after people have been in the United States for many years, but not the kind of situation that could cause his policy to lose support.

The Biden Administration is taking steps against people being converted from one status to another, like by missing a personal appointment. They want to guarantee electronic check-in. The official objection to that is that then people could check in while giving a false street address but the real reason ICE people want it is that people would come to them and they would not have to hunt out people. They want to trick people into surrendering, or so the Biden people think.

He had to reiterate that today. I guess it wasn’t final – but there is that House Ethics Committee report waiting for him if he attempts to join the next Congress. There will be a vote on the House floor about releasing it after Thanksgiving (unless maybe the sponsor withdraws it)

The Committee divided 5-5 on its release (membership in the House Ethics Committee is even by party with a majority needed to do anything)

The argument the Chairman used against release was that the report wasn’t finished up. They had evidently been working on a timetable for release just before Congress adjourned sine die.

You say that like it’s a bad thing-it’s not. I’m not sure what you mean by “genealogical investigations”; and I doubt the new Congress (and Trump) would favor a law grandfathering citizenship.

In any case, the Court (if it wished) could make its decision overturning Wong Ark Kim prospective from the date of ruling and not necessarily retrospective.

I think determining the (illegal) immigration status of the parents (or patients) should be fairly easy, it’s being done in Florida and Texas right now. They’re just not reporting the information to immigration authorities.

No Florida isn’t “determining” the status of the parents and it’s probably the same in Texas.

    1. This applies only to hospitals accepting Medicaid.

    2. The parents are asked a question.

2a. They don’t have to answer that.

2b. They don’t have to tell the truth/

    2c. Nobody is checking.

2d. To encourage truthful answers, they are told there will b consequences to them of gibing any answer.

    3. If this became a requirement for getting a Social Security card, some women would lie about not knowing the father, or about who the father
    was.

    4. You wouldn’t need the parents to sue. The doctors and hospitals would sue to get paid even without suppling a Social Security card number for the patient, and school districts and whatnot.

They are also thinking of using expedited removal for anyone who has been in the country less than two years. (Why stop at two years? Do they think judges will recoil at anything more?)

    Sammy Finkelman (e4ef09)

  79. 2d. To encourage truthful answers, they are told there will be NO consequences to them of gibing any answer. (because they tell them nobody involved with immigration will be informed.)

And that would be real judge made law.

You’d have to investigate going back generations because it would not be established that the parents were truly citizens unless you trace ancestry back to before 1882 when some immigration became illegal.

Congress would have to set this straight, and they’d legalize the Dreamers and others at the same time. Or else no bill would pass.

  83. Matt Gaetz was still proceeding with confirmation on Wednesday.

What caused his sudden withdrawal on Thursday morning was being presented with a whip count by some Senator(s) and a conversation with Donald Trump.

    https://nypost.com/2024/11/21/us-news/matt-gaetz-withdraws-from-attorney-general-consideration

One source familiar with the process told The Post Gaetz was shown a private whip count shortly before he withdrew — demonstrating in black and white that he had “no path to confirmation.”

    https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/21/us/politics/matt-gaetz-withdraws-trump-attorney-general.html

.,..But in fact, Mr. Gaetz had come to realize that he was struggling to amass enough votes to win Senate confirmation. He spoke with Mr. Trump late Thursday morning and decided to pull his name, according to people familiar with his thinking who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss his private decision-making…

It would not be clear whose decision this actually was, but both Gaetz and Trump probably mutually agreed on statements.

CA’s Prop 187 (1994) attempted to do this kind of thing but was squelched by the federal courts. To be fair, Governor Gray Davis refused to defend it in the courts. Davis was later recalled.

Wong Kim Ark itself is “judge-made law.” Why would you need to “trace their ancestry”? It should be pretty easy to determine if people are here illegally. They wouldn’t have US birth certificates, naturalization documents, or legal Social Security numbers.

  87. Strike two:

First, Trump calls Putin and warns him not to escalate his war in Ukraine (a call the Russians have said is “pure fiction”), followed by a Russian missile attack on Dnipro; now this:

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared to rebuff the prospect of reviving his nuclear diplomacy with President-elect Donald Trump, according to his first public remarks about disarmament talks since the election.
    ……….
……….(S)ince Trump left office in 2021, Pyongyang has strengthened its leverage. The regime has expanded its nuclear arsenal, warded off economic collapse from Covid-19 and deepened military and economic ties with Moscow, including deploying troops for Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Kim has fewer reasons to seek sanctions relief from the U.S. and has repeatedly played down the need for disarmament talks. He has grown more unwilling to disarm, rewrote his country’s nuclear doctrine to allow pre-emptive strikes and vowed to pursue a limitless expansion of North Korea’s weapons.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is also providing Kim with things that the U.S. can’t, from diplomatic cover at the United Nations Security Council to sensitive military technology.

This sets the stage for a different Kim-Trump dynamic from their first go-round. The two met face-to-face on three occasions during Trump’s first term in Singapore, Vietnam and the Korean Demilitarized Zone. They also exchanged a series of “beautiful” and “excellent” letters, as the two leaders called them. At one 2019 rally, Trump even remarked: “We fell in love.”

On the campaign trail this year, Trump suggested he could better control North Korea’s outbursts if he returned to the Oval Office. “I think he misses me,” Trump said of Kim, at July’s Republican National Convention.
    ………..
