UPDATE MAY 7 9:41 CENTRAL: Please update your feedback. Is it better now?

  1. Let me know.

    Patterico (48cb2e)

  2. I have to sign in anew every time I comment, if that’s what you mean.

    nk (6b506d)

  3. My comment posts, my sign-is erased, even though I remain on the same page.

    nk (6b506d)

  4. Yep. Screen name and email address each time. Been that way for a while; just more finger exercise. FWIW,  text block window has been acting sort of funny all of a sudden today, too.

  6. I’m not having problems with being logged out. I am using Opera version 85.0.4341.75 on Mac, and I am logged into my admin account. However, I do not have the toolbar of HTML shortcuts above my comment box, nor do I have a comments preview window below the box. Same thing when I use Chrome version 101.0.4951.54.

    JVW (020d31)

  7. Yes. Every time. Firefox/Windows 10.

And the toolbar is now gone completely.

    Kevin M (eeb9e9)

  8. Now the toolbar is back with the new format.  Has anyone gotten <blockquote>quoted text</blockquote> to work?

    Kevin M (eeb9e9)

  9. I have to sign in every time (including seconds ago) but it probably is a blessing to the others on the board because 1/2 the time I am too lazy to take the 5 seconds to sign in

    steveg (643ea5)

  10. I had to fill in the “Name” and “Mail” boxes, with some typing involved.

    Paul Montagu (5de684)

  11. My comment in the open thread is in moderation.
The paragraph spacing is off. Too much separation at times.
There’s no blockquote button, and when I typed the blockquote HTML it didn’t take.

    Paul Montagu (5de684)

  12. Needed to re enter name / email

    urbanleftbehind (3f0175)

  13. #MeToo.

Has to re-enter name/email everytime I want to post anything.

    whembly (7e0293)

  14. Using Google Chrome, I click on the name or email box, which causes the program to display my name or email, which I then click on, to fill in the box. Simple.

Above the text box, where I am typing, I see the familiar four, bold, italic, link, and quote. Let’s see if the first two work.

    Jim Miller (406a93)

  15. Finally, the

    quote

    .

    Jim Miller (406a93)

  16. Let me try again on the

    quote

to see if I can eliminate the extra spaces.

    Jim Miller (406a93)

  17. So, here I have no buttons for italics, etc. Just the 3 fill-in boxes, which I have to fill in by clicking on them and choosing my preferred entry.

    Kevin M (eeb9e9)

  18. Let’s see if explicit HTML works

    italics
    bold

    blockquote

    link

    Kevin M (eeb9e9)

  19. And suddenly, the buttons are back. Unless someone is changing stuff behind the curtain, this seems inconsistent.

    Kevin M (eeb9e9)

  20. Unless someone is changing stuff behind the curtain, this seems inconsistent.

We restored this. The code is obsolete so we’re looking at options.

  21. Old buttons are back

  24. We have rebuilt this. Underneath the form, you should all now see a checkbox that reads, “Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.” Next time you comment, make sure that’s checked, and your browser should remember your information in perpetuity.

    Astroluxe Innovations (9a02f1)

  25. Let me see if this works
    bolditalicslink

    -Sigh-

Until just now, the comment box, itself, would auto-justify (even with zoom levels) with the window so that the comment box would not be hidden by the side bar on the right – which was wonderful! But now it does not.

I can still use the comment box resize tab that is located in the lower right corner. I will click “submit” and see of my resizing of the comment box persists.

    felipe (484255)

  26. Good, the four styles buttons function.

And checking the “save my” box also worked, but the comment box returned to the default size which, for me, runs past the right side-bar and is hidden by it.

    felipe (484255)

  27. DRAT! Before I submitted my previous comment, I noticed that the “save my” box was unchecked. So my info was lost when it posted! It looks like I will have to re-enter my info, and check the “save my” box every time I comment.

    felipe (484255)

  28. Ok, my info is saved, and the “save my” box is unchecked. I know that if I submit another comment, the next time my info will not be saved unless I, again check the “save my” box. I’ll check the box.

    felipe (484255)

  29. Until just now, the comment box, itself, would auto-justify (even with zoom levels) with the window so that the comment box would not be hidden by the side bar on the right – which was wonderful! But now it does not.

That should be fixed now. You may have to clear your browser cache.

    Astroluxe Innovations (9a02f1)

  30. Yep. So it appears that the “save my” box does not persist from comment to comment, and I must check that box every time I submit a new comment. The can, for me, is just kicked from filling out the login boxes, to checking the “save my” box.

Progress, but the problem is not quite fixed. I am not checking the “save my” box with this comment submission , just to make sure that my observation holds.

Okay. That clearly isn’t working for you. You should have to check it only once, and then it should fill a cookie in your browser that persists for a year. Can you tell me which browser you’re using, etc.? We have tested this on Safari, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.

And yes, I have ublock-origin (turned off for this site), and yes, I’m using Firefox 91.9.0esr with a several css mods (tabs on bottom, compact bookmarks toolbar, mostly)

Thanks. We can’t replicate this. On our Windows 10 machine, in Firefox, we fill in the ‘Name’ and ‘Mail’ fields, check the ‘Save my name . . .’ box, write and submit the comment, and then, when we return to the site or click on any page and navigate to the comments, both the ‘Name’ and ‘Mail’ fields are pre-filled in. You’re saying that when you do that, they remain blank?

    Astroluxe Innovations (9a02f1)

  56. Not quite. Any time I forget to check the box subsequently, the form is clear the next time.

    So.

1 Blank form, Fill form out, check box, submit.
2 Form already filled out, check box again, submit
3 Form already filled out, don’t check box again, submit
    4 Blank form

  57. When you get to Stage 4, can you navigate anywhere on the site in Firefox, then right-click and select ‘Inspect,’ then click on the ‘Storage’ tab on the bar that pops up at the bottom, and tell me which Cookies are listed under https://patterico.com? In the ‘Name’ field, do you have either ‘comment_author_[hash]’ or ‘comment_author_email_[hash]’?

  69. After Step 1, I have the two cookies

    Kevin M (eeb9e9)

  70. name field has:

    _utma

    felipe (484255)

  71. From Firefox, 100th update, Windows 10.

    nk (48b518)

  72. Hitting submit without checking the box clears the two cookies.

    Kevin M (eeb9e9)

  73. Without the Save box. The sign-in blanks out but is remembered as soon as I type the first character of my name and email. So just four clicks to sign in, if you forget to check the Save box.

The comment box is fine, just fine, and with a pretty blue border, too.

    nk (48b518)

  74. oh, I see. the bottom two fields out of ten have:

    comment… author site hash

    comment email site hash

    felipe (484255)

  75. submitting a comment with box checked reports:
    _utmt 1 site /
    .gat 1 site /

    felipe (484255)

  76. submitting comment with box unchecked reports:

    .gat 1 site /

    Name fields blank

    felipe (484255)

  77. I appreciate that you are working on a Saturday!

    felipe (484255)

  78. Hey! I submitted a comment and noy the new screen has the box checked! However, the names fields have moved to a position below the comment box instead of above it.

    I’ll take it!

    felipe (484255)

  79. Persistence is now working. The comment box has room to show
    this
much typing – for me it is three lines. I can resize it, though.

    felipe (484255)

  80. And the comment box no longer auto-resizes

    felipe (484255)

  81. It auto-resizes now! Thank you!

    I am GOOD to go!

I’ll talk to Santa Claus to make sure you get something good this year. He and I go waaay back.

    felipe (484255)

  82. Ooh, this is nice to use.

    felipe (484255)

  83. This is fine, since — so long as I never have to touch them — I don’t care where the name box is.

    Bold
    Italic

    Quote

    Kevin M (eeb9e9)

  84. Could the Link color be a bit more different from black?

    Kevin M (eeb9e9)

  85. Alright. This should now be working. The ‘Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment’ checkbox will now remember your preference persistently. Once you’ve checked it, it’ll stay as is forever until you explicitly uncheck it and post a new comment.

Side note: This is unlikely because the CSS is versioned, but if the whole commenting area is looking strange to you (if any of the boxes are tiny, basically), do a hard refresh on your browser and it’ll clear.

    Astroluxe Innovations (9a02f1)

  86. If you want to add easy stuff, buttons for strikeout, bullets and numbered lists might be nice.

Embedded images would be good, too, but I think that’s a policy matter.

  87. I’d like an espresso with two biscotti and a glass of chilled spring water.

  92. Thank you, Patterico! Thank you, tech person!

  100. Maybe it is because the check ark stays next to:

Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.

    Sammy Finkelman (b434ee)

  101. Yes, it’s back to “normal” except for no preview box. Not sure how much I care.

  102. (about the preview box)
