Republican Or Not? Sometimes It’s Just Not Clear…

Filed under: General — Dana @ 4:10 pm

[guest post by Dana]

This is surprisingly clever, especially as one considers the source:

The skit made me think of the following statement because if you didn’t know who said this and about whom it was said, would you assume it was a Republican or a Democrat?:

The good news is in X’s state, [they’ve] been censured and [their] state poll numbers have dropped faster than any human being I’ve ever seen. So hopefully they’ll get rid of [them] with the next election.

  1. Hello.

    Dana (174549)

  2. Hey, that is funny. It has been a long time….

  3. I saw this online. It’s hilarious!

makes the point that that being a Republican is now defined by the culture war and being pro-Trump.

  5. Being a Democrat is ALSO defined by the culture war and being anti-Trump.

  6. Every once in a while, SNL will fool you and make something that doesn’t fit the “mold.” Like this, from 2016:

  7. Republican Sean Parnell suspends candidacy for Pennsylvania Senate seat
Sean Parnell, the Republican endorsed by former President Donald Trump for Pennsylvania’s open US Senate seat, announced on Monday he is suspending his campaign.

The decision comes after a judge awarded Laurie Snell, Parnell’s estranged wife, primary physical custody and sole legal custody of the couple’s three children, according to an order that was made public Monday. The judge also determined that Parnell committed some abusive acts toward his wife in the past.

So much for family values .

  8. It is funny, but it’s in the delivery, and not the content. A black guy, a black woman, and an Asian guy can’t guess whether a thirty-something white couple are Republicans or Democrats. That’s because they don’t know whom the caricatures are by and what publication they’re in, that’s the reason.

  10. Nothing on the terrorist attack in Waukesha?

  11. Did you have some new information obudman? The open threads still active if you have something good to share.

    Obudman (2184ae) — 11/22/2021 @ 5:37 pm

No, Obudman. I have no interest in posting about that. But as suggested above, feel free to post about it on the Weekend Open Thread or at your own site.

    Dana (174549)

  13. Simon Jester,

    I laughed.

  14. Pretty clever. I like some of the subtle humor, like when the contestant guesses wrong in a 50/50 question and the host chimes in with “So close!”

The part I found hard to believe is that a 30-something New Yorker would have known that there was such a place as Manhattan, Kansas. It reminds me of years ago when Kansas State had a good football team and won their conference title, and an in-studio host for one of the postgame shows declared that “They’ll be partying in Topeka tonight!” Uh, yeah, I guess some of residents certainly will, especially those who attended college in Manhattan, KS.

  15. Nothing on the terrorist attack in Waukesha?

I considered writing about it but, honestly, I don’t think at this point that there is a lot we can say. At some point down the road we may want to talk about President Biden — and the left in general — being quick to apply the white supremacist tag to Kyle Rittenhouse while studiously avoiding the Waukesha assailant’s fondness for BLM, or we may want to cover the disastrous results from the hare-brained decision to give easy bail to violent criminals, but right now I think any discussion would just devolve into noise. Better to wait a while, learn a bit more, then discuss it once the heat of the moment has calmed down.

  16. would be funnier with alec baldwin as the host

then he could ask a gun control question

contestant: gun control as in legislation, or handling a gun?

alec shrugs comically: who can tell?

    laughter sign lights up

  17. It was one of their funnier skits in months— especially the last segment- which is apparently omitted from the post- which nails Liz Cheney–and bids her luck on her soon-to be-MSNBC gig.

    Here’s the missing part:

  18. @8- Watch the last part- where they skewer Liz. That’s the ‘punchline’– and the genesis for the skit.

  21. would be funnier with alec baldwin as the host

then he could ask a gun control question

contestant: gun control as in legislation, or handling a gun?

Better: “Do guns kill people, or do people kill people?” But I doubt they’d have the cojones.

Change the line “except police or firemen, because we couldn’t find any who would live here” to “except police or firemen, because we don’t want them living here” and that sketch would be right for today.

    felipe (484255)

  24. But, you know, talk about your media bias! Everybody is reporting that the Wyoming GOP voted 31-28 to not recognize Liz Cheney as a Republican, but nobody reported that they voted unanimously not to recognize each other at the sheep camp.

    nk (1d9030)

  25. Nothing on the terrorist attack in Waukesha?

What terrorist attack? What was Brooks’ political agenda? No one mentioned Brooks chanting any Allahu Akhbars during or after the crime. He was a thug fleeing another crime scene.

  26. Great skit, by the way. You can tell by the uncomfortable reaction from the audience. Here’s another one, with Killer Baldwin.

  30. I do see that Obudman was chastised for not taking it to the open thread. I apologize, Dana.

Having a life now means not being informed on a topic. That checks out.

  32. 12, 15.

I get it – no Trumpist involved.

    Obudman (2184ae)

  33. Having a life now means not being informed on a topic. That checks out.

Then Joe must really be living it up these days in Wilmington.

Or is it Scranton this week.

  34. What terrorist attack? What was Brooks’ political agenda?

Getting even for all the black folk that Rittenhouse killed?

    Kevin M (ab1c11)

  35. Looks like you derailed Dana’s topic, Paul.

Again, I apologize for engaging. I scrolled back to see the quote that Paul used and then I saw the admonishment.

(FWIW, Obudman, JVW has always seemed pretty fair minded in his topic selection. I don’t think he really lives or dies over “Trumpist” content.)

    BuDuh (4a7846)

  36. @33, In comment 11 i asked if you had a link to a good summary or new information. I’ll be honest; I know it happened but I haven’t read much detailed reporting yet.

You’ve commented a few times since about this and you’re complaining that we’re not talking about something, but you’re not actually providing any information (new or otherwise) or a point of view to talk about. Do you have something to say on the subject or not?

    Time123 (9f42ee)

  37. Nobody tells me anything either. I’ve become inured to it.

    nk (1d9030)

  38. Everyone is getting in on it now, Paul.

    BuDuh (4a7846)

  39. Buduh, I don’t think it was a complaint about derailing, just response to the complain that we’re not talking about what he wants to talk about.

Same comment to you as to him since you seem to share his concerns; do you have information and something to say about the event? At this point what I know is that it’s a developing story and all the hot takes line up with everyone’s priors. Doesn’t leave a lot of runway to have something to say.

    Time123 (9f42ee)

  40. Shouldn’t you ask that question on the open thread, Time? It was your suggestion after all.

    BuDuh (4a7846)

  41. @41, maybe, I also asked he had some new information to share. Apparently the totality of his, and your, stance in it is that people should talk about it more. Dana can speak for herself but I doubt she’s going to be super angry if a thread about a funny SNL skits morphs into some other interesting conversation. Which isn’t the same thing as attacking her for not writing on a topic you’d rather talk about.

    Time123 (9f42ee)

  42. You have gotten my “stance” wrong, Time. No surprise.

I made one comment on Paul’s off-topic pronouncements. My comment is self explanatory.

After that one comment, I realized that this isn’t the thread for this kind of engagement. For some reason, though, you persist. If you want to know more, take it to the appropriate thread or start your own blog are the rules.

    BuDuh (4a7846)

  43. Sorry I got your stance wrong.

    Time123 (9f42ee)

  44. Looks like you derailed Dana’s topic, Paul.

Say, BuDuh, who died and appointed you Thread Nanny?

    Paul Montagu (5de684)

  45. @42 the first derailment was of course Rip @7, but that had the right partisan spin so no one called it out

    JF (e1156d)

  46. This is what I meant by “snippy.”

    BuDuh (4a7846)

  47. When I entertained the conceit that I had a blog, I had Terms of Use. Here they are, in their entirety:

“I maintain this site for my own amusement and no other reason. By visiting you expressly agree that you have no rights or expectations to anything here. If you don’t like something, tough titty. Take your snivelling to your mommy and ask her to wipe your nose and give you a great big hug and ice cream.”

    nk (1d9030)

  48. @49, What flavor?

    Time123 (9f42ee)

  49. This is what I meant by “snippy.”

I’ll take your answer as “no one appointed me Thread Nanny, I was just being a troll”.
Thank you, BuDuh, for that clarification.
BTW, can anyone confirm that there was a political motive for Brooks mowing down parade-goers with his SUV? Because I haven’t such seen indication. When it came to Nice and the German Christmas market mow-downs, the jihadist political motives were apparent almost immediately.

    Paul Montagu (5de684)

  50. @49, What flavor?

Heh! You just reminded me of a Trevanian story about a semi-eccentric art lover who provided a free studio for impecunious artists, with free canvas, paints and other art supplies, and cheese and wine. One of them would occasionally complain about the quality of the cheese.

    nk (1d9030)

  51. Captain Ed embedded some video and, at around the 2:00 mark, the Waukesha police chief stated that “this is not a terrorist event”. Unless or until there’s some convincing evidence, we’re left with that.

    Paul Montagu (5de684)

  52. Kevin Williamson is a pretty insightful guy.

    Paul Montagu (5de684)

  53. @54. “The case against Fox News is that it is tedious, repetitive, and lurid.” – KW

ROFLMAO. Kevin Williamson should be strapped into a chair a la ‘A Clockwork Orange’ and force-fed ‘Network’ for 7 days around the clock to get his head on straight- -and get educated on the ways and means of cable television news. He can have all the respect he wants for ‘Hannibal’ Hayes and ‘Kid’ Goldberg for quitting and trying to go straight– but quitting their gigs on a broadcast platform of scale that reached the demographic they wish to persuade was just plain stupid.

As Williamson, Hayes and Goldberg will learn from ‘Diana Christensen’:

“I watched your 6 o’clock news today; it’s straight tabloid. You had a minute and a half of that lady riding a bike naked in Central Park; on the other hand, you had less than a minute of hard national and international news. It was all sex, scandal, brutal crime, sports, children with incurable diseases, and lost puppies. So, I don’t think I’ll listen to any protestations of high standards of journalism when you’re right down on the streets soliciting audiences like the rest of us. Look, all I’m saying is if you’re going to hustle, at least do it right…

I see [Tucker Carlson] as a latter day prophet. A magnificent messianic figure in vain against the hypocrisies of our times! A strip Savonarola, Monday through Friday, that I tell you, Rupert, will just go through the roof! And, I’m talking about a six dollar cost per thousand show. I’m talking about a hundred, a hundred and thirty thousand dollar minutes and you ought to figure out the revenues of a strip show that sells for a hundred thousand bucks a minute! One show like that could pull this whole Network right out of the hole. Now, Rupert, it’s being handed to us on a plate, let’s not blow it.

Hayes, Goldberg… I’m offering you an hour of primetime television every week, into which you can stick whatever propaganda that you want. We’re talking about thirty to fifty million people a shot. That’s a lot better than handing out mimeographed pamphlets on ghetto street corners.” – Diana Christensen [Faye Dunaway] ‘Network’ 1976
