Trump To Launch Social Media App Called, Ironically, “TRUTH Social”…

Filed under: General — Dana @ 9:19 am

Well, this should be…fun?? Is this part of gearing up for a run in 2024? It would make sense. Without Twitter and Facebook, he’s going to need a way to reach his supporters bigly:

Former U.S. President Donald Trump will launch his own social media app, TRUTH Social, that he said would “stand up to Big Tech” companies such as Twitter and Facebook that have barred him from their platforms.

TRUTH Social will be created through a new company formed by a merger of the Trump Media and Technology Group and a special acquisition company (SPAC), according to a press release distributed by both organizations.

“We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favorite American President has been silenced. This is unacceptable,” Trump said in a written statement included in the release.

“I am excited to send out my first TRUTH on TRUTH Social very soon. TMTG was founded with a mission to give a voice to all. I’m excited to soon begin sharing my thoughts on TRUTH Social and to fight back against Big Tech,” he said.

Clearly, the actual, unvarnished “TRUTH” continues to mean nothing to the former president:

The insurrection took place on November 3, Election Day. January 6 was the Protest!

  4. I wonder if whoever thought this idea was good told Trump that a tech media company will lose hundreds of millions of dollars to build a platform?

My assumption is this will end up being GeoCities with a paywall hosted on someone’s old thinkpad only to run credit card transactions or basically a porn site, in fact that is probably the exact model they’re thinking, which makes sense. MindGeek has made a boatload of money exploiting people, if that’s not Trump, nothing is.

  5. increasing the irony exponentially, i’m waiting for a self-anointed “fact-checker” to give four pinochios to the name

i’m sure to see that on a site called “news” or politifact or something most here have comically thought to be lacking in irony for years now

  6. Trump SPAC halted multiple times as stock jumps again in volatile trading
Digital World Acquisition Corp., the SPAC that is taking former President Donald Trump’s planned social media platform public, soared Friday following a massive rally in the previous session.

Trading in the stock was halted due to volatility multiple times Friday. The SPAC, which trades under the ticker DWAC on the Nasdaq, skyrocketed 216% at one point and last traded up nearly 140%. The stock surged more than 350% to close Thursday at $35.54 in explosive trading volume and volatility.
    ……..
Phunware, the advertising software startup involved with Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign, jumped in unison with DWAC. The stock last traded up a whopping 624% to $11.09 per share Friday, bringing its week-to-date rally to nearly 980%.
    ……..
Signs emerged that small-time retail investors could be behind the monstrous rally in the SPAC. On Thursday, DWAC the single most actively traded stock on Fidelity’s brokerage platform. Meanwhile, the ticker was among the most popular mentions on Reddit’s WallStreetBets. The SPAC was also a trending topic on Twitter, which indicated that DWAC could be having a meme stock moment like GameStop and AMC.

  7. Trump’s terms of service forbids users from saying anything to “disparage, tarnish, or otherwise harm, in our opinion, us and/or the Site.”
With those arbitrary “standards” (assuming they’re enforced), Trump’s social media site will make Twitter look like the Wild Wild West.

This might be the funniest news item this week. It’s like one of those Russian nesting dolls of irony and sarcasm. It’s a real life Onion article. Even the name is an oxymoron. You think it started out as Social Truth and someone said “no, that’s too on the nose”?

Careful with that popcorn though. Moderation is the key. Otherwise, with this one, you’ll drown in popcorn. There will be so much popcorn you’ll get tired of popcorn. This might dent the global supply of corn, salt, and butter. There might be so much popcorn you get high blood pressure or hardened arteries. Popping the corn might spike energy costs.

Or this will be a flash in the pan and all those popcorn supplies I bought will sit idle. Those commodity futures I bought might have been a bad decision.

  9. If Trump makes a go of this — more power to him. Given his history running businesses, though…

Of course, why did Trump choose “TRUTH”. Is the concept really exotic to him, like the Taj Majal or Melania, and suggests something unattainable and therefore really hot? Or was it this conversation somebody recorded in Helsinki when he was with Putin…

“Yes, Comrade Trump, you should start a newspaper and call it Pravda”

    Appalled (1a17de)

  10. As opposed to TRUTH:

BIDEN ON THE BORDER: “I guess I should go down, but the whole point of it is I haven’t had a whole hell of a lot of time to get down. I’ve been spending time going around looking at the $900 billion damage done by hurricanes and floods and weather and traveling around the world.”

There are conservatives who voted for this.

  11. I’ll believe it when I see it.

    nk (1d9030)

  12. “I guess I should go down”

I’ve always wondered, does the President really need to make a staged appearance somewhere to understand what is going on? Of course, the same could be said of surveying hurricane damage.

    AJ_Liberty (ec7f74)

  13. @9 more likely they told him to start a newspaper called Izvestia

  14. Speaking of varnishers of truth, did Psaki just greenlight Taiwan?

“Some of the principles of the Taiwan Relations Act that the United States will continue to abide by, of course, is assisting Taiwan in maintaining a sufficient self defense capability. Another principle is that the United States would regard any effort to determine the future of Taiwan by other than peaceful means a threat to the peace and security of the western Pacific and of grave concern to the United States,”

So. Is the US only going to abide by some of the principles now, or all?
    WTF is a “grave concern”?
I assume Tsai Ing-wen is currently seeking clarifications in order to find out if Biden’s words the other day in support of Taiwan are contrary to that of his puppeteers

It’s unlikely in the extreme that we’d go to bat against China for Taiwan. Biden has displayed a distinct aversion to anything like active US military conflict.

I think China has larger issues though and has moved annexing Taiwan down on the to-do list.

  16. You want to eat some popcorn? TRUTH Social was hacked within hours after Trump announced its formation, and it hasn’t even launched yet!

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/donald-trump-s-social-media-platform-hacked-just-hours-after-it-was-announced-reports-say/ar-AAPQiin?ocid=msedgntp

Now that’s funny. The hacker group Anonymous was able to gain access to the preliminary platform because Trump put up a pre-order ad on Amazon. If they can do that, within hours, imagine what they can do when the actual platform is online.

The thing is that TRUTH Social will be a paid subscription app. If not, why put out a pre-order ad? I predict the same thing will happen that happened with the Trump fund raising scam for his campaign. If anyone made a donation, but didn’t check the barely visible little box at the bottom of the website to indicate a one-time donation, they were automatically enrolled in monthly donations without their knowledge or consent. That bankrupted thousands of Trump supporters and ended costing the campaign over $10 million in refunds.

If you make a donation, you are expected or required to make monthly donations. If you opt out, you are branded a traitor to Trump. See how that works? If you order a subsciption to TRUTH Social, you will be expected or required to make monthly payments. If you cancel the subscription, you will be branded a traitor.

It’s the same with the Gratuitously Obsequious Party. If you are a Republican, you must pledge absolute fealty to Trump as a supplicant. If you refuse and stand on principle, do not condemn his lies and conspiracy theories, you will be branded a traitor. It’s obscene fraud.

Trump is not a cancer in the party; he’s leprosy. He is willfully and actively destroying the Republican party, telling his cult supporters to not vote if he is not the nominee.

  18. Back in 2015, Trump discovered that there was a large and disaffected group of erstwhile Republicans, who were joined together by talk-radio and websites like Free Republic and such. They had been clearly harmed by the juxtaposition of outsourcing and unchecked immigration and they were mad as Hell and weren’t going to take it anymore.

So, he became Howard Beale, and showed up at the GOP debates with all these folks in tow. A few dared to oppose him and were immediately cast into the outer darkness. The rest tried to outlast him, while placating his minions.

They are still trying. Maybe more cowbell.

    Kevin M (ab1c11)

  19. There are two things that can dislodge Trump.

    1) Death, infirmity or imprisonment.

    2) An electoral shellacking of the GOP candidates who support him. Preferably in the midterm primaries, with support for Cheney et al and successful challenges of his most sycophantic supporters.

Failing that, an unseating of the hard-core Trumpists in the Congress, as an example to the others. The benefit of Trump has be be seen as less than the danger of Trump. The only way to do that is to make support for him toxic at the polls.

Don’t have to sink the get-along go-alongs, bad as they may seem they are salvageable when the wind stops blowing from Vichy. It’s the folks that want Trumpism as the party’s future that need to go, not those who just back the strong horse.

    Kevin M (ab1c11)

  20. The thing is that TRUTH Social will be a paid subscription app.

This is of course brilliant. People get invested this way. What is a religion without offerings?

  21. Has anyone been charged with insurrection?

Not yet, but if Trump is re-elected in 2024, you can be damn sure there will be some.

Astute point. The more a religion requires of someone, the harder it is to leave. As a Jack Mormon, I know this all too well.
