Trump Leaves White House for Walter Reed

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 5:43 pm

New York Times:

President Trump received a promising experimental drug to treat Covid-19 on Friday, according to a memo from his doctor, and later went to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for what was expected to be a stay of a few days.

In a brief video message the president tweeted shortly after arriving at Walter Reed, he looked tired. He declared that he is “doing very well” and suggested that he was visiting the hospital only as a precaution.

. . .

The president has a low-grade fever, nasal congestion and a cough, according to two people close to Mr. Trump.

Jim Acosta has a concerning report about the president having trouble breathing:

I think we have to take media reports with a grain of salt. As Allahpundit has said many times, the problem we have is the problem of the two unreliable narrators. One, Trump, downplays coronavirus news to avoid panic. The other, Big Media, may have a tendency to sensationalize for eyeballs.

In the end, we must remain patient.

UPDATE: Meanwhile, Mike Lee and Thom Tillis, two members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, have tested positive. Sen. Lee was hugging everyone in creation without a mask at Barrett’s nomination ceremony.

  3. Yes, any breathing issue is concerning. I hope he has an easy go of it. It’s incredible how quickly this has spread through the White House:

In the past 24 hours, the total of confirmed cases now includes President Trump, the first lady, a senior White House aide, two Republican senators who sit on the judiciary committee and the head of the University of Notre Dame.

All have links to Saturday’s White House event.

Three White House journalists have also tested positive in the past 24 hours. How many people have these individuals with confirmed cases been in contact with?

  7. The way I see it, this goes one of three ways:

    1. Trump has minor symptoms, he comes back and is able to show everyone that COVID is not as bad as Biden and the Democrats say. Advantage: Trump

    2. Trump has major symptoms and has trouble recovering. Biden and the Democrats point out that COVID is as dangerous as they say. Advantage: Biden.

    3. Trump dies from COVID. Pence is now the Republican nominee for president. Biden’s camp has to pivot to a whole new candidate, who is nothing like Trump. Pence, though, has to run for president the first time with only a month before Election Day. Advantage: who knows?

  10. Mark Steyn brought up a salient point on Tucker Carlson’s show. He was very close to Boris Johnson at one time and he is insistent that BJ has changed since he fought the Covid. Granted, BJ was hit very hard and we don’t know what it has in store for DJT.

Yet the question of vigor is rather large. Nobody has ever seen a reduced DJT. Ever. Could we be in for the alltime most ironic twist in presidential electoral history with a more vigorous Biden winning on that basis?

The other thing that has struck me is the virtual silence as to Melania’s illness. She has remained in the White House. What are the reasons for this disparate approach/treatment? With alllll the repetitive extemporaneous speechifying by the various reporters, no references to our FLOTUS? I would think any new data points would be welcomed by those stuck saying nothing of note for hours on end.

Those are not the RNC rules. There is a selection process at that point, and they may well pick someone else.

  17. The “experimental drug”: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/REGN-COV2

REGN-COV2 is an experimental drug developed by the American biotechnology company Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. It is an artificial “antibody cocktail” designed to produce resistance to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic. It consists of a mixture of two monoclonal antibodies, REGN10933 and REGN10987. The combination of several antibodies is intended to prevent mutational escape.

As of September 2020, REGN-COV2 is being evaluated as part of the RECOVERY Trial.

Regeneron has a deal in place with Hoffmann-La Roche to manufacture and market REGN-COV2 outside the United States.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals provided “a single 8 gram dose of REGN-COV2” in response to a “compassionate use” request from the president’s physicians after President Donald Trump tested positive for COVID-19.

    Kevin M (ab1c11)

  18. 8 grams is a lot of dose.

  19. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals provided “a single 8 gram dose of REGN-COV2″ in response to a “compassionate use” request from the president’s physicians after President Donald Trump tested positive for COVID-19.

That’s why he’s in the hospital. They’re not going to give him an experimental drug at home. And that should answer Ed’s question about Melania too.

  20. Herman Cain was a wealthy man, and presumably had access to the best medical care. It gives me pause.

    Won’t Trump share?

    Kevin M (ab1c11)

  22. Melania reportedly ‘has a headache.’

Wonder how many times The Donald has heard that one?

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  23. @19 NK What is Melania, chopped liver? I get that the toned and younger Melania has a phenomenal expectation of a good outcome. Why not give her the best of the best treatment regimens?

So, why so aggressive with DJT, who has been hailed by his physician as of his last physical as a particularly robust man?

Where is the curiosity from our intrepid press corps?

    Ed from SFV (f64387)

  24. Melanie is a disposable accessory.

    Rip Murdock (1b7516)

  25. Melania. Darn autocorrect.

    Rip Murdock (1b7516)

  26. Why not give her the best of the best treatment regimens?

The jury is still out on the Regeneron drug. It is still only experimental. I wonder if Trump made them pay an endorsement fee before he agreed to have his name associated with it? 😉

Melania and her doctors may otherwise feel that she is getting all the care she needs at home, without lying in a hospital with a needle in her arm and peeing in a bottle (they do that even if you can go the bathroom so they can monitor the urine).

    nk (1d9030)

  27. What is Melania, chopped liver? I get that the toned and younger Melania has a phenomenal expectation of a good outcome. Why not give her the best of the best treatment regimens?

Gee whiz, maybe Melania said she didn’t want to have the treatment. She’s a grown woman with agency, and could have said no – with or without her doctor’s blessing. She’s only 50 years old and obviously physically in very good shape and takes care of herself. She’s not a 74-year old obese man with high blood pressure.

There was an interesting article on Putin’s apparently extremely robust precautions that came out on the morning before Trump’s positive test.

Russians Were Urged to Return to Normal Life. Except for Putin.

Russian journalists who cover Mr. Putin have not seen him up close since March. The few people who meet him face-to-face generally spend as much as two weeks in quarantine first. The president still conducts his meetings with senior officials — including with his cabinet and his Security Council — by video link from a spartan room in his residence outside Moscow, which has been outfitted with Ms. Izranova’s disinfectant tunnel.

    Sounds almost … Biden-like, doesn’t it?

Stop spreading misinformation. Masks are to protect others. Don’t ask what a mask can do for you. Ask what a mask can do for your country. 64. One of his conditions is that he is not in need of supplemental oxygen. Survival concerns are not on the radar for his situation.

Full disclosure; I spent several days in the hospital due to covid and did require oxygen. My family lived the lives of hermits(is plural allowed for hermit?), full masks when we went out for supplies from places that employed fully masked people. Hand sanitizer, wipe the groceries, etc. Still got it.

It is so weird that you guys get starry eyes for any politician. Obama girl, but for Trump? Insane.

He hasn’t lived more fully than others. This is a man who never won a fight, never really earned friendship with a fellow man through loyalty or adventure, never served in a good military unit, never put a bad guy where he belonged, never saved the day, hands on. He’s never changed a motor. He’s never turned someone around by mentoring them. He is deeply in debt, has to lie about himself, tell us who he wishes he had been, every day. He even tries to fool us about having a woman who loves him. It isn’t like he can hop in his Ferrari and go get an ice cream cone. He is a prisoner.

Do not elevate him as your role model by buying lottery ticket. You want a home of laughter, not a house of golden chandeliers.

When Biden pushed Trump, just a little push, at the right moment, with a “do it” Trump pushed back.
He let us know those Proud Boys are ready to tear it up. Trump will show us. That’s not Hugh Heffner. That’s Jared Loughner. That’s not how a fulfilled person thinks.

lived the lives of hermits(is plural allowed for hermit?), full masks when we went out for supplies from places that employed fully masked people. Hand sanitizer, wipe the groceries, etc. Still got it.

I don’t want to call BS. Everyone I know who stayed distanced and did curbside or delivery for stuff, has stayed healthy. But if you have a family, and they are moving around, it can happen. Or do you hide your eyes seeing Star Trek’s sexy, miniskirted Yeoman Janice Rand [Grace Lee Whitney] strut her stuff in 1968… and who died at age 85 in 2015? LOL

  96. @99 That is correct!

However, some would say the term gained more resonance when Gladys Knight joined the church and sang with the choir! Motown-Tabernacle. Get it? (She really did join. Maybe it was the Vegas proximity to Utah.)

    AJ_Liberty (a4ff25)

  107. If Trump wins in 2020, we get four more years of feckless leadership, scandal, and lowering the bar on acceptable conduct. Trump then is positioned to then groom his successor. If Biden wins in 2020, we have a man well past his prime in a position requiring vigor and competent decision making….with a VP whose primary qualifications are race and gender…who’s been an unexceptional candidate and Senator. We also get a defeated Trump who will still likely try to dominate the coverage by simply not going away, probably promoting conspiracies, and acting as an unfortunate king maker for the GOP….making it harder for traditional Republicans to reclaim the party. If he succombs to the virus, there is a small chance for a complete GOP reboot…..Pence likely becomes the candidate at this late juncture….but could there be a crack of an opening for a universally liked Nikki Haley? No one should wish for outcome three…..but a tiny bit of me wants what is best for democracy and for something to shock our system out of its current partisan pathology….and then there’s karma……

Trump’s campaign still has not paused negative ads as Biden’s has. This is the Trump campaign’s “question of the day” for Biden, after he wished Trump well:

“Do you regret repeatedly attacking President Trump in a Michigan speech on the same day he was diagnosed with COVID-19?”

It’s definitely the case that Biden gave a speech in Grand Rapids yesterday critical of Trump’s leadership of the economy. But Biden was careful not to attack Trump and spoke about his diagnosis as something he was sorry to see.

  114. For Kellyanne, I do feel bad. She has young children to raise.

I want everyone to recover fully, and I feel bad for everyone who caught it, except for Trump. This is Trump’s fault for creating this environment, not so much theirs. I feel bad for Ms. Conway, but she was still foolish for not masking up.

  117. I feel bad for Ms. Conway, but she was still foolish for not masking up.

She has been out there every day for nine months, parroting the cynical idiocy that encourages people to jeopardize the lives of their family, their friends, and everyone else around them; perpetuating the hell of this American Holocaust for (she hoped) political gain.

Sympathy is the last thing she and the rest of Trump’s accomplices deserve.

    Dave (1bb933)

  118. Has this been verified in a double blind study?

Sure, let’s do a double-blind study. After that, let’s do a double-blind study on Russian roulette. The morality of it isn’t all that different. Which is why the question is intellectually dishonest.*
The best available science supports the contention that masks significantly reduce the spread of transmission.
    *

The gold standard in science — a randomized, double-blinded controlled trial — is impossible to conduct in a pandemic, so researchers have turned to other analyses, said Andrew Noymer, an associate professor of population health and disease prevention at the University of California at Irvine who was not part of the review.

    Paul Montagu (77c694)

  119. They should blame the guy who hired Atlas since the Stanford neuroradiologist is just the chucklehead who told Trump what he wanted to hear.

    Paul Montagu (77c694)

  120. A neuroradiologist is exactly the kind of doctor you want if you suspect mini strokes. And now there’s this:

The president has a low-grade fever, nasal congestion and a cough,

There is no blood-brain barrier from a portion of the nasal cavity to the brain. Atlas may still earn his pay.

But it would be good for the country.

Nikki Haley or Pence would be better in all respects. Anyone having a problem with this comment is simply not conservative. Trump on power grabs, accountability, and objectively on spending, is the most liberal president we’ve had. He is only not liberal on social issues and racism. Those are not priorities to me, cough.

  122. Sympathy is the last thing she and the rest of Trump’s accomplices deserve.

    Dave (1bb933) — 10/3/2020 @ 9:22 am

I don’t feel sympathy really, but on a level I feel empathy. We’ve all been proud, selfish children at some point in our lives, so we can understand the series of mistakes, the refusal to admit they were mistakes, that captures most of the Trump administration. Now they pay for it, and I feel pity for them even if this will obviously be remembered as some kind of sick justice.

Conway was one of the worst spinners of COVID, not just insisting it’s contained by being ugly to those who suggested otherwise. It is still sad if she’s in pain, the same way it’s sad a guy in prison misses his family.

    Dustin (4237e0)

  123. We’ve all been proud, selfish children at some point in our lives, so we can understand the series of mistakes

I agree with you in general. But we’re not talking about blaming your little brother for something you broke, or refusing to share your M&M’s.

    Dave (1bb933)

  124. @109 I haven’t, but now I have. She never would’ve gotten away with it today. Parents are very easily offended on behalf of their kids.

    Dave (1bb933) — 10/3/2020 @ 10:49 am

I think you have the stronger point. Pitying an idiot for stubbing their toe doesn’t really capture hundreds of thousands of families unable to attend funerals for needless losses.

    Dustin (4237e0)

  126. @115 You are correct and funny! Actually, neither Coke nor Tab were officially banned by the Mormon church. Coffee and tea were, and still are. Some church members decided that the reason for the ban must be caffeine, so they took it upon themselves to put caffeinated sodas on the black list.

The church has definitely sowed confusion on this front, however. When I was attending BYU, caffeinated Coke was unavailable on campus. Caffeine-free Coke was, however. In fact, I recall seeing a caffeine-free Coke vending machine that was gold in color, just like the uncaffeinated cans. Have you ever seen such a thing?

Up until a couple of years ago, one could not buy caffeinated sodas at a BYU football game played at the home stadium, which of course had fans from the visiting team who were not necessarily Mormon. BYU’s spokeswoman blamed “lack of demand”, which was very Baghdad Bob of her, and became a joke amongst the many Mormons who were just fine with caffeine in their sodas, and would have liked to have some real Coke at the game.
