Another White Woman Admits She Pretended To Be Black

Filed under: General — Dana @ 12:12 pm

[guest post by Dana]

It makes sense that the reason she has “come out” about this is that she was found out by a colleague:

Despite publicly living as a black woman for years, George Washington University associate professor Jessica Krug admitted Thursday that she is actually a “culture leech” — who is white.

“For the better part of my adult life, every move I’ve made, every relationship I’ve formed, has been rooted in the napalm toxic soil of lies,” Krug, 38, writes in a brief but life-shattering Medium post titled “The Truth, and the Anti-Black Violence of My Lies.”

The self-proclaimed “historian of politics, ideas, and cultural practices in Africa and the African Diaspora” goes on to detail a lengthy trail of public deception.

“To an escalating degree over my adult life, I have eschewed my lived experience as a white Jewish child in suburban Kansas City under various assumed identities within a Blackness that I had no right to claim: first North African Blackness, then US rooted Blackness, then Caribbean rooted Bronx Blackness,” she says. “I have built my life on a violent anti-Black lie, and I have lied in every breath I have taken.”

But of course she has: Krug has also written a book which “interrogates the political practices and discourses through which those who fled from slavery and the violence of the slave trade in Angola forged coherent political communities outside of, and in opposition to, state politics”.

And here’s what’s really um, quirky about her thinking:

She has not lived a double life, she claims, as she has no other life beyond the lie she has been living.

“There is no parallel form of my adulthood connected to white people or a white community or an alternative white identity. I have lived this lie, fully, completely, with no exit plan or strategy,” Krug writes. “I have no identity outside of this. I have never developed one.”

Krug points to childhood trauma as being the reason for the duplicity. She also says that she is unsure how to move forward from this point on:

“I don’t know how to fix this,” she goes on. “I don’t know what to build from here. I don’t know that it is possible to repair a single relationship I have with another person, living or dead, and I don’t believe I deserve the grace or kindness to do so.”

Perhaps she should contact Rachel Dolezal.

As a result of Krug’s Medium post, the university has opened an investigation into the professor. You can read more about Krug here.

  1. Hello.

    Dana (292df6)

  2. She can’t fix it, she’s lied to every single person she knows, on an ongoing basis, most of her adult life. It isn’t anti-black violence, though, it’s just a long con.

  3. But how is this different from a male athlete appropriating the identity of a female athlete? (Looking at you, Bruce Jenner.)

  5. IDK how many women intend to pretend to be of a different ethnic background and are now screwed over by “liberal women”, but I suspect it was very few.

  6. The sad part of this story: she probably got where she was based on her purported race, rather than her mental qualifications. Is she to blame? Of course. But maybe it is time to look at the system as well. Maybe we should be striving for a system where your merits get you a job, rather than your gender or race. Someone, I believe, kind of pointed that out in a famous speech. Can’t remember who…

Indeed, that is what I was wondering after reading this story.

Your sex is determined by your chromosomes.

Your skin color/race is determined by your chromosomes.

If someone can “identify” as a different sex, regardless of what chromosomes they have, including physically and/or hormonally mutilating their body to better conceal the truth of the matter, why not a different race and skin color too?

  11. It is indeed, JVW! Cringe-inducing schlock.

    Dana (292df6)

  12. @7 I realize this is pedantic and not very common, but there can be other things that make it more complicated. Some people are XXY, some people are XYY, some people have unusual hormone blockers or excessive hormones or hormone sensitivities that cause their physicality to be different than their chromosomes might indicate. Sometimes weird things happen with hormone washes in the brain during pregnancy.

Oh, no need to blame him for this. He had nothing to do with it. She’s a grown woman with agency. Let’s let her own it.

And yes, I get that you’re making a jab here, but why try to provoke? Everything is not Trump’s fault, Nor have any posters accused him of being responsible for every bad thing that happens. There’s no need to make up bad things that he is responsible for because he already gives us plenty of actual bad things to work with himself.

    Dana (292df6)

  18. Imagine reading this nonsense and coming away motivated to explain that yet again poor Trump is a victim.

reminds me of Iranian traffic jams (all about the Jews and the CIA).

  19. I was just beating all the Trump haters to the point because as I read the comments here these days everything is Trumps fault even if it isn’t. There’s a few logical calm voices but overwhelmingly it has become nothing but bash Trump and blame Trump and oh according to Patterico I am beneath contempt because I choose to on occasion defend him. Well back at ya bud.

Yes. The real scandal here is not that a white woman passed for a black woman. It is that this intellectual mediocrity is a professor at GWU.

I don’t like Trump at all and regularly call him out on his various failings, and yet I have not even suggested in any way, shape, or form that this is Trump’s fault because, as I previously stated, it clearly has nothing to do with him. What you see as a bash Trump and blame Trump sentiment here is most often an accurate take on yet one more dishonest and corrupt thing that he has said or done.

IOW, as much as you believe this has become little more of place to reflexively blame and excoriate Trump, people like you take the opposite position of reflexively excoriating any who criticizes the President. Perhaps there should be a concerted effort to not reflexively react in any circumstance but to judge each situation accordingly. But you must realize that the proposition comes with the understanding that Trump will indeed continue to be excoriated and bashed because he is deserving of it. We already know who he is. We have seen him in action, repeatedly.

I’d bet money part of Dana’s intention in this post was to give us a break from Trump stories in an election year, something we can all discuss. It’s been a dark week in the news. We need to cheer up.

Same for JVW’s hilarious chicken wing post.

The posters here don’t need me to rally around them or anything but I often find myself doing it because of how irrational and annoying the attacks on posters are.

Anyway, coming out the gate defending Trump before he’s even mentioned makes you look silly.

    Dustin (825e2c)

  25. Thanks, Dustin. And yes, that’s why I posted this story. Sometimes I just need a break from getting hammered…so I don’t go out and get the other kind of hammered in frustration.

    🙂

  26. She was probably right the first time. I’d have to measure her skull, but she looks as she could pass for black more easily than she could pass for white. Putative parentage is not the same as actual parentage. Maybe none of her acknowledged ancestors are black, but she can’t know where mama, grand-mama, great grand-mama, etc., were and what they were doing all the time. That itch to be black had to come from somewhere in the first place, and why not racial memory embedded in her genetic code? I think Jung would agree with me. What do you think?

  27. GWU plans to replace Jessica Krug, the professor who admitted to falsely claiming Black identity

George Washington University’s history department plans to replace Jessica A. Krug, the associate professor who said she lied about being a Black woman, the department chair has confirmed.

“We certainly want the classes to continue, and we’re going to see if it’s possible,” said Daniel Schwartz. “We’re looking to see if we can find a replacement.”

Krug was teaching courses on African and Latin American history in the fall semester, Schwartz said, and the department is looking to bring in a professor with experience teaching those subjects. A replacement has not been chosen, but Schwartz mentioned the possibility of recruiting someone from the GWU community.

“There are people who are not full-time faculty at GW, but have taught part-time before,” he said.

[fpunch!] That was me fpunching Marci on the arm.

  29. A colleague explains how she was fooled by Krug. It’s a revealing read into identity politics superseding common sense and reason:

Many are asking themselves how #JessicaKrug managed to fool anyone into believing she was Afro Latina. Well, let me tell you: we were both fellows at the Schomburg and I suppose she fooled me.

I mean, I don’t feel hurt or betrayed in this moment because the truth is I always knew something was off with her, but I thought the pathologies she displayed were the product of systemic violence, and not of her twisted racial fantasies…

See, not only did she try to “pass” (we need a better term here – masquerade?) as Latina from “El Barrio” but she also told us her parents were addicts and even said that there were overdoses and suicide attempts happening during the fellowship period.

She always dressed/acted inappropriately—she’d show up to a 10am scholars’ seminar dressed for a salsa club etc—but was so over the top strident and “woker-than-though” that I felt like I was trafficking in respectability politics when I cringed at her MINSTREL SHOW.

In that sense, she did gaslight us. Not only into thinking she was a WOC but also into thinking we were somehow both politically and intellectually inferior.

While claiming to be a child of addicts from the hood, she boasted about speaking numerous languages, reading ancient texts, and mastering disciplinary methods—while questioning the work of real WOC doing transformative interdisciplinary work that she PANNED.

She consistently trashed WOC and questioned their scholarship. She even described my colleague Marisa Fuentes as a “slave catcher” in the introduction to her book. Kind of amazing how white supremacy means she even thought she was better at being a person of color than we were.

That pathology remains evident in her mea culpa article. Somehow she manages to remain ultra woke and strident, still on her political moral high horse, caling for white scholars to be cancelled –in this instance her own white self.

She says she doesn’t know what accountability looks like—well, clearly, she needs to quit her job (a job that if I am not mistaken was a diversity hire) since no scholar can be respected when they engage in this kind of fraud.

Second, she needs to start a fellowship fund for afro latina scholars, and fund it with at least as much money as she obtained through her lies.

Third, she needs to stop with the Dolezal-splaining about how wrong her actions and philosophizing about her punishment. I’m not investing a single drop of energy punishing her— esp not in the middle of a pandemic. Instead, I will recommit to radical self/community care. #bye

    This response is spot-on:

If wokeness can be understood as the redistribution of recognition, then it can’t help but inspire an outrageous amount of fraudulence. Jessica Krug is just the superlative form of a much broader and subtler phoniness and exaggeration in the culture.

  30. This just in: Professor Krug will teach a new course entitled “Imposters and Con Artists 101”.

    norcal (a5428a)

  31. Dana, unless I am mistaken, Professor Krug has tenure. So while it might be fine to give her mental healthy leave, and find replacements to teach her course, I wonder what the legal ramifications will be.

    Nasty.

Me, I like tenure. It protects me, and I surely do need protection. But this is one weird case.

I wonder if Professor Krug has about the same amount of Black ancestry as Elizabeth Warren has Native American?

  32. I think it’s brave of her to voluntarily subject herself to the discrimination and likelihood of being shot by cops that comes with the identity she chose for herself.

  34. Patterico, did you see the video with Professor Krug putting on an accent and acting all street?

    hahahahahahaha

    Yeah that’s interesting

    Dustin (825e2c)

  36. @35 Ahaha! Besides the put-on accent and fake street posture, she said that white people didn’t give her enough time to speak, and that the NYPD is a colonizing force being trained by the IDF [Israeli Defense Force].

How rich is this, coming from a white Jewish girl who grew up in Kansas?!

The wokefest continues apace. No wonder people flocked to Trump.

It’s me you want to talk to, felipe. I have one degree of separation from the pretender to the throne of Montenegro and (I have been told) his sterling silver penknife.

    nk (1d9030)

  47. I didn’t know that, nk. I have read your great comments on the “Trump thinks” post. I wanted Sammy’s take because Israel is getting recognition from Kosovo. Serbia is moving their Embassy to Jerusalem. To paraphrase a Monty Python skit “Wars raged in the Middle East until, suddenly, Peace broke out!”

    felipe (023cc9)

  48. Ah! Sorry, felipe, you were ahead of me. Yes, I would like to know more about that, too.

But, you know, one way a nation gets recognition is by giving recognition. For example, Haiti was the first nation to recognize Greece’s independence in 1822. Why? Because it had only recently gained its own independence that it wanted recognized.

Quite right! Both Kosovo and Serbia need to repair their reputations to improve their standing in the international community, and Israel needs more Embassies relocated to Jerusalem. I wonder how many Muslim Embassies, in Jerusalem, will it take to make it impossible for the Palestinians to launch missile attacks against Israel?

Dustin had said (and I agree) that there can be no real peace without the Palestinians. I know that Binyamin Netanyahu should take full advantage of the current U.S. administration.

    felipe (023cc9)

  51. I’ve thought about that more, Felipe. The tendency here will be to reduce the leverage of Hamas. That could bring the Palestinians to the table.

Honestly let’s just give Portland to the Palestinians. It is a beautiful part of the country and I doubt they mind the riff raff that much.

    Dustin (825e2c)

  52. Oh. Do you have metaphors?

Only in intellectually suspect humanities departments.
