Friday Funnies

Shocking, I know, but I really kinda rolled my eyes at this:

Donald Trump says likely presidential rival Joe Biden is ‘against God’ as he upped his attacks on the Democratic nominee. Speaking to a crowd at Cleveland airport in Ohio, Trump told supporters Biden is ‘following the radical left agenda. Take away your guns, destroy your Second Amendment. No religion, no anything, hurt the Bible, hurt God.’

The president continued his criticism against Biden, saying: ‘He’s against God. He’s against guns. He’s against energy, our kind of energy’. Biden has repeatedly pledged his support for second amendment rights and owns a shotgun. He is also a practising Catholic.

Really not clear how a mere mortal like Biden has the ability to “hurt” an omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent God, and the Book He left with us, but okay… It always makes me sigh when Donald Trump talks about God and acts like he knows what pleases Him, or what He’s about. And worse, judges the spiritual standing of another individual. (See Matthew 7:3…lock and speck, Mr. President, log and speck…) But of course, his base will gobble up this attack on Biden for breakfast, and spit it out for lunch.

P.S. Gov. DeWine retested hours after his first test, and it came out negative.

Jerry Falwell Jr. Taking Leave of Absence From Liberty University
    …………
The news comes days after Mr. Falwell posted, and then deleted, a photograph on Instagram of him posing alongside a woman with his pants unzipped and his arm around her.
    …….
In the photograph, both Mr. Falwell and the woman have their pants unzipped. His hand is close to her chest. “More vacation shots,” the post said. “Lots of good friends visited us on the yacht. I promise that’s just black water in my glass.”

Mr. Falwell responded to criticism of the photo earlier this week in an interview with WLNI, a local Lynchburg radio station. “Yeah, it was weird. She’s pregnant. She couldn’t get her pants zipped and I was like trying to like … I had on a pair of jeans I haven’t worn in a long time and couldn’t get zipped either. So, I just put my belly out like hers. She’s my wife’s assistant she’s a sweetheart. I should have never put it up and embarrassed her. I’ve apologized to everybody. I promised my kids I will try to be a good boy from here on out.”

A now-deleted video of a party on the yacht, titled “Trailer Park Boys,” showed Falwell family members and friends in costumes in an apparent reference to the Canadian mockumentary series.

Students from Liberty expressed outrage about the photo on social media. Several pointed out that it was in direct violation of the school’s code of conduct.

  15. As has long been painfully obvious, Trump has no shame. There’s no Big Lie too hilariously false for him to tell it with a straight face, call anyone with the temerity to fact check it “Fake News,” then double and triple down no matter how obvious it is to absolutely everyone that he’s gaslighting. Who you gonna believe, your lying eyes or the malignantly narcissistic Roy Cohn protégé?

Coincidentally, this happens to be the M.O. of tin-pot dictators, actual and wannabe, always and everywhere.

If you’re defending this guy with whatabouts and false equivalences, at best you’re lying to yourself. It’s true that he’s neither the first, nor will he be the last, lying demagogue to try his hand at American politics. But at least in my lifetime he’s by orders of magnitude the most vile and extreme to rise to his present office.

  18. Biden on July 27, 2020 – “I wish we taught more in our schools about the Islamic faith. I wish we talked about all the great confessional faiths. [Islam is] one of the great confessional faiths. What people don’t realize is … we all come from the same root here, in terms of our fundamental basic beliefs. I just want to thank you for giving me the opportunity for being engaged, for committing to action this November.”

Now you could argue he means that we should talk more about Christianity in school also but our legal battles and history shows that is not the case and will not be tolerated. History also shows that Islam IS taught in schools under the guise of diversity and history (revisionist most of the time) while Chrisianity is vilified in most public school texts and curriculums these days.

I seriously doubt that Biden will be encouraging discussion of Christianity and allow literature of the tenets of the faith to be distributed. The Gideons have already been banned from most school properties. But Islam, why that’s another story. He might just roll out the red-carpet where it hasn’t already been stapled down in the name of tolerance.

  23. There is a Young Life chapter in my daughter’s public high school. Its meetings are announced over the school’s PA.

And then there is also The Equal Acess Act, law since 1984, upheld by the Supreme Court.

But since it’s the Antichrist’s pimple-popper (Trump) we’re talking about, can you name one thing, just one tiny, eensy-weensy, itsy-bitsy, little thing he has done to have Christianity taught in public schools? Just one.

    nk (1d9030) — 8/7/2020 @ 5:51 pm

The point is NO religion should be taught if it isn’t a religious based school (private) OR every religion should be given equal time and access and accuracy in the depiction of their beliefs (good luck with that one). It isn’t Trumps job to get Christianity taught in public schools and it isn’t public schools job to teach religion. That, as well as many other subjects currently taught in schools, is the job of parents and family, the churches and other religious entities. NOT schools.

The Young Life meeting is not a school organization or function, it is an independent organization that is allowed to use school property due to the Equal Access law. I’ve not said anything against that. It is what takes place in the classroom under the guise of education that I have issues with. At no point have I ever hinted that Trump should install Christian teaching in schools, I would not want that. Schools should stick to education that is their business to teach and leave religion to the family. Biden clearly said, even if it was pandering to CAIR, that he wanted Islam taught in the schools. To get a vote maybe, to keep a vote, most likely.

    Marci (405d43)

  44. Nic,

Do you happen to know how much variety there is in the textbook choices (particularly history and social studies material) available to school boards? Is it a wide range, say, from progressive to conservative, or is it the case that there are just a handful of big publishers whose textbooks are basically the same, with a left-of-center bias similar to the mainstream media?

  45. Thank you. It is because of the direction I saw education going over 30 yrs ago that I chose to homeschool my children through high school graduation. My mother was a public school teacher, but she did everything she could to ensure that my siblings and I attended private schools.

    norcal (a5428a)

  46. @45 Kind of both. There are a handful of big companies that do a full spectrum of all subject areas of texts and they tend to provide two “schools” of textbooks, there’s probably a real term, but we call them Texas or California. 😛

There are also then a number of small to medium companies that provide curriculum in more specific areas, like Nat Geo has basic curriculums for Math, Science and history, but no English curriculum and it’s broadest curriculum is in history. Or Open Court which mostly does Language Arts.

It also depends on the subject area. Math is just a hodge-podge of options, but tend to be either the traditional Algebra/Geometry etc cycle or the IM1, IM2, IM3, but other than those broad categories (and one company may provide both categories), there’s a lot of internal variety. Life sciences tend to have a spectrum of conservative to Liberal (less to more evolution, less to more human biology). Hard sciences tend to be a variety. Health tends to be either abstinence only or comprehensive sex ed. History tends to be a variety, US history tends to have texts that use two axis (less to more multicultural emphasis, less to more hardcore re the civil war). English is a pretty wide variety, though 11 grade is usually US lit, with some texts tending to emphasize multicultural writers and some are the more traditional offerings.

    Nic (896fdf)

  47. Cheers, Marcie.
Both my parents were public school teachers for 40 plus years. It is child abuse to send your children to public schools nowadays. My grandchild will never go to the overly polluted public school b.s.

  48. I appreciate the information, Nic. My concerns are the biases in the history, social science, and English curriculum. It’s difficult to spin hard science, right?

That’s very funny about Texas and California.

Speaking of Texas, my mother was visiting my sister in Texas, and she noticed that my nieces’ schoolwork (from public school) was more rigorous than that of Utah schools. This cracks me up, because Utah schools are supposed to be better than Nevada schools. I guess almost any state beats Nevada when it comes to school ratings.

My mom taught at a high school (Aragon) in San Mateo, CA for one year right after my parents were married. She said it had the best students and/or curriculum of any school she ever taught at. That was in the 60s, but I suppose it’s still a good school; the real estate in that area is very expensive.

STEM for Social Justice lesson plans include:

MDM4U (Data Management) -In this lesson, students will be using their math skills to analyze statistical data on hate crime trends in Canada. Students will be given the opportunity to reflect and deconstruct their ideas of privilege and difference. Possible co-curricular links can be made to senior school Geography courses. Social justice issues that are addressed include colonialism, racism and homophobia.

SNC1D (Grade 9 Science) – In this introductory lesson, students will be exploring the foundations of the scientific method and the specific qualities that constitute a true scientist. Social justice issues that are addressed include colonialism, gender and racism. Students will further explore the implications and assumptions of the word science and explore other sciences as valid forms of investigation and research.

SBI3U (Grade 11 Biology) – Through the analysis of a 19th century short story, this lesson investigates how the field of genetics has contributed to racism and the modern implications of the sequencing one’s DNA. Possible co-curricular links can be made to senior school English and Geography courses. Social justice issues that are addressed include colonialism, sexism, ableism, homophobia and racism.

SCH4U (Grade 12 Chemistry) – In this two-day lesson, students will explore the growing issue of e-waste and chemical pollution. As the technology race continues, developing countries have become digital dumping grounds. Consequently, many individuals are forced to live in inhumane conditions and make very little money by recycling and salvaging used components. Possible co-curricular links can be made to senior school Geography courses. Social justice issues that are addressed are colonialism and poverty.

  55. Good title, written by a Liberty alum: Jerry Falwell’s Zipper Has Been Down for Years.

The Liberty community has always looked at Falwell and seen things that made us uncomfortable. He’s always shown us too much. For instance, Falwell has explicitly said that he takes no responsibility for the spiritual growth of Liberty students, even though the school is a Christian university. A loyal supporter of Donald Trump, Falwell has openly said that his political activities are not influenced at all by his faith. He called a Liberty parent—which is to say, someone who helps pay his salary—a “dummy.” He told one well-known evangelical pastor to “grow a pair,” and chided another for being unqualified to speak “on any subject.” Falwell even told Liberty students to “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s,” then threw his support behind a bizarre plan for Virginia counties to secede from the state and join West Virginia.

  56. @49 Textbooks from reputable companiest are mostly (small c) conservative, regardless of their “school” because they have to sell to a large number of districts with a wide variety orientations. If there is going to be anything more specifically oriented, it tends to come in supplementary classroom material (also has to be district approved).

State school ranking between states are often a game. As part of NCLB every state had to develop a statewide standardized test and test the kids on state standards to see if students are improving. However, no one at the national level really looked at the test to determine rigor, so you might have one state that has a really hard test and one might have a really easy test. The trick used to be (not as much anymore since NCLB has sunset) to create a hard enough test that you know what your kids are learning but not so hard of one that they do obviously badly. Percentage of successful students were often then used to rank schools by state.

San Mateo does have good schools.
