AOC Redux: Engel Ousted in NY-16

Filed under: General — JVW @ 9:46 pm

[guest post by JVW]

Though the actual vote was taken three weeks ago, earlier today the count was finalized and sixteen-term House incumbent Eliot Engel has lost his primary race to progressive insurgent Jamaal Bowman. The final tally shows Mr. Bowman with a ten-point margin of victory and an 11,000 vote lead.

Unlike two years ago when our lovable but hopelessly clueless niece Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez surprised a lazy and inattentive Joe Crowley, Rep. Engel had every reason to fear the progressive insurgency of Mr. Bowman, a middle-school principal by trade. Whereas our Lipstick Lenin won her primary two years ago by a 4,000 vote margin from a piddly 30,000 votes cast in a stealth campaign, this year saw nearly 80,000 votes cast (er, mailed-in), and Mr. Engel had a good enough read of the tea-leaves that he practically begged for a chance to pander to the crowd at a George Floyd rally, alas to no avail. Like Mr. Crowley in the last election cycle, Mr. Engel found himself the odd man out in a district that is trending young, diverse, and leftist.

If nothing else, Mr. Bowman is substantially more accomplished in his background than our delightfully daffy beloved relative (relatively speaking, of course). Whereas she went from undergrad to bartender to Congresswoman all before she turned 30 (thanks, Saikat Chakrabarti!), he has spent two decades as a teacher, guidance counselor, and principal. Other than that, Mr. Bowman appears to have the same cookie-cutter democrat socialist views that is rapidly becoming party orthodoxy, and he was endorsed by the motley hard-left crew of the Working Families Party, Justice Democrats, the DSA, MoveOn, Kos, and the assorted racial/ethnic groups that constitute the party of Thomas Jefferson these days. As I wrote two years ago, I am pleased to see another dinosaur Democrat from a rancid and bankrupt party machine kicked to the curb by his own, but we’re quickly coming to grips with the idea that what is replacing these time-serving hacks is a new generation with whom we nasty reactionary right-wingers share quite little. It could be a really brave new world ahead of us come January 2021.

  1. Imagine going back to a time machine to 1996 and telling Bill Clinton and Bob Dole that in a mere quarter-century time, this is what we would be dealing with.

  3. Well, if Bowman had years of working at a school in the district, a goodly number of the voters would probably have interacted with him personally and know what they are getting. Also he should understand working within a system so he shouldn’t be acting like an idiot.

Um, by diverse you mean what in that sentence?

    Pffft.

  7. Biden plus a Democrat sweep of the Senate will mean terrible things. Again, I have a choice between an incompetent crook whose impulses are consistent with America, or a cabal of revolutionaries who just might be competent enough to wreck everything. Just think of what the Supreme Court would be with a couple of Critical Race Theory advocates on board.

  8. If thid long a delay is indicative of heavy mail-in ballot utilization, dont bother with election night coverage.
Thanksgiving weekend should be when the Presidential result should be announced.

Been there, done that: Nixon vs. McGovern.

  11. They disqualified over 100,000 votes in California due to this mail in scheme. Countless thousands in Wisconsin and elsewhere. Takes weeks to count the votes. But you want to do this nationwide and expect there won’t be a scandal or riots accusing both sides of voter fraud.

That’ll just hasten the clock to midnight.

You’re faulting them for enforcing the law you claim to care so much about.

Return past the due date was reportedly the leading cause of invalidation, with this being the case for 70,330 ballots. In addition, 27,525 were rejected due to no voter signature or the signature failing to match voter records.

Are you suggesting they should count ballots that are mailed after the deadline, or not properly signed?

Be prepared. I have no political signs, no flag flying because of my granddaughters health, we can’t afford any confrontations from the antifa nevertrumpers, but if they try anything on our property, I am a hunter that becomes a sniper.

  16. Dave,

it won’t happen if you show up in person with identification. I’m saying you’ll have rampant claims from the left of disenfranchisement and illegitimacy and you’ll have the right saying the left is tossing ballots to get a desired result like they’ve done in the past. And this will be on a nationwide scale.

    NJRob (eb56c3)

  17. You’re faulting them for enforcing the law you claim to care so much about.

No, I think he’s saying that the entire scheme is largely unworkable. Elections should be held on a single day, at a polling place or through technical means offering equivalent (or better) security. By spreading the election out over a month as we now do, you constantly get the “if only I had known ___ before I voted” complaint.

In the time of Covid, anything could happen.

    Kevin M (ab1c11)

  18. Mail balloting over a month can undermine the legitimacy of the elections EVEN IF all the votes are legit and counted correctly.
