About That Conspiracy Theory that CNN Removed a Critical Episode of Larry King from Google Play

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 1:45 pm

Here is the allegation:

The 1993 episode of CNN’s “Larry King Live” featuring an anonymous caller who was later identified as the mother of Biden accuser Tara Reade was no longer listed in Google Play’s catalog late Saturday.

Twitter user J.L. Hamilton shared a screenshot showing the Aug. 11, 1993, broadcast of “Larry King Live” was no longer listed in the season three catalog of the iconic CNN talk show. Mysteriously, though, the Aug. 10 broadcast, which is listed as “Episode 154” is followed by the Aug. 12 broadcast, which is listed as “Episode 155,” suggesting that episode and the ones that follow could be incorrectly listed and off by a number.

Fox News later verified the Aug. 11 episode is not listed on the streaming service. It is unclear when it was removed from the catalog.

The allegation was repeated by Tiana Lowe at the Washington Examiner:

[A]fter months of the media hedging on the Reade story, the specific Larry King Live episode apparently featuring Reade’s mother has inexplicably gone missing on CNN’s Google Play archives of the show. …. Given CNN’s relative silence on the Reade allegation, the network’s top bosses’ toxic obsession with Trump, and the size of the Larry King Live archive on Google Play, it cannot possibly be ruled out that the episode’s disappearance was the result of Biden-backing CNN executives intentionally memory-holing it. Now tell me, do you corrupt your credibility so thoroughly when you think a man is innocent?

The Daily Caller reported the same thing.

This allegation created quite a buzz. Every political hack and incurious partisan — you know, the kind who get huffy about “fake news” except when they spread it themselves — hurried to their keyboards to tap out knowing and cynical takes about the dishonest media that covered up this episode.

I could go on, but you get the idea.

So is it really true? Nope, it does not appear to be.

Here’s the grain of truth. If you go to Google Play, and search for Larry King episodes from 1993, you do in fact see that the search results show no episode from August 11, 1993. Go ahead and click to see for yourself, even though I am about to show you a screenshot:

Screen Shot 2020-04-26 at 12.56.25 PM

BOOM! as they say on Twitchy. The precise thesis of the Fox News article, borne out by actual screenshot evidence! Now go forth and spread this rumor far and wide!

… or maybe don’t. First, before we get to the really hard evidence that this is bullshit, let’s apply some common sense to the notion that CNN (which broadcast Larry King Live) was trying to cover this up by … publishing a whole article about it and putting it on their front page yesterday:

Helluva cover-up, to publish an article about it. But still: why the removal from the archives? Well, if you’re asking that question, you probably have not noticed the (faulty) assumption you’re making. I’ll take you through how I uncovered it. First, I noticed (as the Fox News article did) that the numbering was consecutive, as if the episode had never been there. The call by Tara Reade’s mom happened on August 11, 1993. The episode the night before (August 10) was Episode 154 according to the screenshot. The episode the night after (August 12) was Episode 155. What’s the deal? Did someone go back and renumber all the episodes? Was the missing episode called Episode 154.5?

Curious, I clicked through Episode 155 to see what it said there. Was it labeled Episode 155 when you click through? Here’s what I saw:

Episode 155 Unavailable

See that language in the bottom left corner? It says “This show is currently unavailable.” So I clicked through some other episodes from Season 3, and every time I clicked through I got the same message. So I tried a few other seasons, up to and including the most recent. Every time I clicked through, I found that I could not actually pull up the episode.

I figured maybe I didn’t understand how Google Play worked. After all, so many outlets had confidently reported that you could access the other episodes. I went to Twitter and put up my findings:

TV’s Andy Levy sent me a link to this tweet from CNN spokesman Matt Dornic:

Turns out I understood Google Play well enough. It was just the case, apparently, that not a single one of the media outlets or talking heads who retweeted this ridiculous conspiracy theory had bothered to check to see if any other episode of Larry King was available on Google Play.

Note that the original version of the Fox News story did not have Dornic’s response (thank you, Wayback Machine!), saying merely: “Neither CNN nor Google immediately responded to Fox News’ requests for comment. Fox News also reached out to the representation of Larry King and have not heard a response.” (I love those “they did not respond immediately” sentences in media stories. Just how many minutes or seconds do they give people to respond?) But now their story says:

On Sunday afternoon, CNN provided as a statement a reply tweet from CNN Communications spokesperson Matt Dornic, who denied that the network removed anything from Google Play, calling the allegation from Hamilton “B.S.”

“Listings on the site are not sourced thru CNN. Click any episode, it will say ‘not available to watch,'” Dornic added in the reply to the Twitter user.

Which pretty much blows up the whole premise of the story, wouldn’t you say? The guy who made the original observation thinks so. He has deleted his original tweet and is now retweeting the response from the CNN spokesman.

Now, there’s still the issue of the absence of that episode from the search results. Here’s what I have to say about that: it is odd, but it has nothing to do with the validity of the dumb conspiracy theory.

So here’s the thing. If CNN spokesman Matt Dornic is full of crap, and other episodes of Larry King can be played on Google Play, here’s your chance to make yourself famous. Go make a screen recording of yourself playing any episode of Larry King Live from Google Play. CNN’s Matt Dornic says it can’t be done. If he’s lying, go to the link, click on one of those episodes you think actually is available, and play it. Because, as always, there’s a chance I’m wrong. And if I am, you can make a name for yourself as the guy who proved a CNN spokesman was full of crap.

If you have been repeating the conspiracy theory, you owe it to the truth to do this. If you can’t play any Larry King episode on Google Play, it means the conspiracy theory is crap — which means you really ought to go to all the places where you repeated it, take it back, and admit you were wrong.

Oddly, many of the people to whom I have pointed out these facts have suddenly gone radio silent. A few quibble with questions about why the episode is missing from the search results and such, but not one person who was pushing this theory has come back to me and said: “You know what? You’re right. I tried playing other episodes and I can’t. I guess I was wrong to push this.”

It would be so refreshing if people would do that in this age of partisanship. And if I turn out to be wrong about this — which is possible, although the possibility seems increasingly remote — I’ll admit it.

Now let’s get out there and put an end to baseless rumors — even if they are about the media and confirm your biases. The truth is more important than confirming your prejudices.

  2. I didn’t fall for the conspiracy theory — let’s chalk it up to taking so long to write my story — but I have noted that, a day and a half after the news of the Larry King tape broke, The New York Times and The Washington Post have no mention of it on their websites. The uber-feminists? They are silent, too.

    I wonder why that is?

It’s possible that they will ignore it, and it is also possible that they are working on a story that is not half-assed like the Fox News one was. Time will tell.

The New York Times published, on April 13th, “The Times Took 19 Days to Report an Accusation Against Biden. Here’s Why.” Perhaps they’ll be able to investigate the new evidence in less than 2½ weeks this time.

  6. This is what the Daily Mail says:

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8256367/New-clip-emerges-Joe-Biden-assault-accuser-Tara-Reades-mother-phoning-Larry-King-1993.html

A new clip appears to show Tara Reade’s mother Jeanette Altimus calling into Larry King and asking about her ‘problems’ with a ‘prominent senator’ in 1993. The clip does not mention sexual assault allegations. Reade filed a formal complaint against the VP this month

There is also a transcript of the call which I can’t cut and paste.

Tara Reade now claims she filed some sort of complaint with the Senate in 1993 but no trace of it can be found and this year she filed a police report that did not name any person.

  7. Correction: A trascript of the start of the call.

The mother asks if there is any way for her daughter to proceed without going to the press, which hr daughter didn’t want to do out of respect for the Senator

  8. You were correct about the unavailability of any of the episodes (as I mentioned earlier on the other thread).

However… If CNN spokesman Matt Dornic is full of crap… I have to say there are no ifs, ands or buts about it. Anything/anybody associated with CNN is full of crap.

  24. Occam’s Razor, Google got caught with their hand in the cookie jar so they pulled ALL episodes.

I don’t think you know what the law of parsimony means. The simplest explanation is they’ve never been available on Google Play. Or are you saying that when Google was choosing what to buy for content for its service, it intentionally chose to not include any any Larry King shows because Biden would run for president, in 2012 when they were choosing shows to add to the marketplace?

    Colonel Klink (Ret) (305827)

  25. Occam’s Electric Shaver

Someone thought the call exposed LKL or CNN to a potential libel suit long before Google Play listed it, and possibly without knowing, or even caring, who the assailant might be. That would account for Google Play’s sequential numbering.

    Kishnevi (7eee2b)

  26. I have followed the Tara Reade story.

Points in her favor: She seems to be a life long democrat, so this probably isn’t a partisan hack job. She quit abruptly and reported at the time and over the years of having been uncomfortable. Something seems to have happened. Her mother’s phone call seems to support that something happened.

Points not in her favor: Up until 2017, she seems to have been a Biden supporter. Currently she seems to have been a Bernie supporter and having some kind of admiration for and/or connection with Putin and Russia. The Bernie fanatics appear to be willing to do or say anything to get their way. Russia has undermined the democratic candidate in the past in order to get Trump into office. Her story has not been consistent over the years. Her mother’s phone call to Larry King does NOT support the story that Biden shoved his fingers in her vag. No one remembers her reporting this, even though she says she did. There are Biden papers from that era available, though currently sealed. Law enforcement would be able to get into them and there don’t seem to be any reports of paperwork evidence. She also says she reported it to the Senate and there doesn’t seem to be any paperwork related to that. No one she says she reported it to professionally seems to remember. There people who have had her position have said that she is not being accurate in describing what the position would have entailed.

Misc. data points: There have been no reports of Biden casually screwing around over the years. None of the other reports on Biden have been similar to Reade’s accusation. Would someone say “Come on, man.” to a girl they were trying to talk into bed? While it is a casual verbal tick of Biden’s, it doesn’t seem like it would be one in that sort of situation.

Other points I’ve considered: I cannot imagine having “too much respect” to report a person who sexually assaulted me by sticking his fingers in my vag. Reade reports having voted for Biden several times since then. Neither Romney nor McCain were extremists. If you had a choice between voting for a person who sexually assaulted you or voting for an otherwise reasonable person that you had some disagreements with on policy, would you vote for your assaulter? Would a mother describe sexual assault as “a problem with a senator”.

My personal conclusion: Something happened, but not what she is currently describing. I do not think Biden stuck his fingers into Reade’s vag. No objective evidence appears to exist as she reports it. Her story does not make sense and it does not fit with other things we do know. I do think she was very offended by being asked to waitress at a fund raiser because her legs were good. (no one would carry this relatively minor event as a full detail for the better part of 2 decades if they didn’t have a strong reaction to it.)

  28. Everybody else has withdrawn from the race, but Mr Biden, with 1,312 pledged delegates, is still short of the 1,991 he needs to win the nomination. The Democrats can still deny him the nomination if Democratic leaders and primary voters take this seriously.

There was already some discussion about that — admittedly, mostly among the Bernie Bros — because it was becoming increasingly obvious that he’s in mental decline; dude has trouble finishing sentences! This can only pick up steam as time passes.

But to stop him at this point, the Dems would have to unite behind one candidate, and only Bernie Sanders is anywhere close in pledged delegates, with 938. A lot of Democrats might have chosen Elizabeth Warren as the alternative, but the Democrats can’t afford angering the devout Bernie Bros by picking any alternative but him.

It’s virtually certain that there is no absolute proof, but it was the Democrats who were insisting, during the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation, that absolute proof isn’t required; the Dems exonerating Mr Biden at this point would stink of hypocrisy.

Between the two cases, there were only two pieces of contemporaneous evidence: Mr Kavanaugh’s retained social calendars, which tended to clear him, and Miss Reade’s mother’s call to Larry King, which tends to show guilt. Everything else is he said/she said.

This is one of those times the GOP can sit back and let the Dems self-destruct. Peter Daou, who worked on both John Kerry’s and Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaigns, has already started the process. Trouble is, he’s a Bernie Boy, too. It’s going to take a Biden partisan to make a big break.

Ultimately everyone has to draw their own conclusions as to what happened/did not happen. I have laid out where and why my reasoning is currently. If further evidence arrives, it could change my conclusion.

(I can give you my ultimate Kavanaugh conclusions as well, if you want, which are not dis-similar- Something happened but not what she thought was happening.)

Paperwork from 1993? On a complaint about a sitting Senator? Given that Al Gore’s campaign managed to find the younger George Bush’s DUI record, I suppose it’s possible, but any paperwork on a complaint about Mr Biden, well, that’s likely to have hit the roundfile a long time ago.

I can see it having happened, and I can see the claim being false; either is equally possible. But I do have quite a feeling of schadenfreude on this one. 🙂

  53. First Matt Dornic claimed CNN didn’t have a distribution deal with google Play. I exposed that on twitter showing that Jake tapper shows are currently available for purchase, ON Google Play. Then he changed that to “We do not have a distro deal for LKL w/ Google Play.” But then why are all those shows listed there? Because the deal they had was either cancelled or expired. All those LKL listings didn’t appear in a puff of smoke. They were offered for download by CNN thru Google Play. The inscription “seasons only” means you can’t buy just one show; you need to take the entire season. That sort of stipulation would be on agreed to by CNN and Google. It wouldn’t just appear there out of thin air. I’m sure I’ve seen them for sale in the past on Google Play (and wondered why anyone would buy them.) So Dornic is not being very forthright and honest about this. And none of it explains why one show is missing, if in fact it is.

  63. Let see we can’t say the video doesn’t exist or the veracity of it, so we will throw this red herring out their and fool people into discrediting story that way.

You can watch the video on the front page of the CNN site right now, this isn’t complicated. There’s a lady, that says she has a daughter that had an issue with a senator, and didn’t go to the press about it. There were no names given, of the mom, the child, or the senator. It may be Tara Reade’s mom, maybe.

    Colonel Klink (Ret) (305827)

  64. The argument explaining why the video is not available may be reasonable, but that still does not explain the obvious cataloging error. The sequential numbering skips over that episode as if it did not exist. Initially I thought it may have been the weekend, but that day falls on a Wednesday and the show was in fact filmed on that day. It seems clear there was an obvious attempt to conceal that footage.

It seems clear that you’ve obviously never worked in the television biz nor had to deal w/ferreting through, or cataloging video ‘archives.’ Hell, when I was at CBS/NY and tried to access more benign video ‘archive’ footage- of some of the videotapes of the space shot coverage, it was a bloody nightmare; ‘reels’-files, etc., were simply marked “Gemini”– or ‘Cronkite/Canaveral,’66,’etc., – and dealing w/the materials was usually left to low level staff, or interns [certainly not the video engineers] so mislabeling — even getting footage transferred from reels to carts and transferred between departments was costly, time consuming– and involved a fair amount of paperwork. ‘Archives’ are also costly to maintain– and ‘holes’ [due to lost material by erasing and reuse of tapes, etc.,] can sometimes be filled w/footage found down the line preserved by station managers at local affiliates. And some of the machines to access the master materials no longer operate, so getting dupes can be time consuming. The archives were such a PITA to deal w/Paley eventually used the core of the CBS archive as a tax write off to start the Museum of Broadcasting. Of course there are usually print transcripts available someplace as well but again, storage and costs are a factor. Hollywood studio archives have faced similar problems. NASA as well; properly archiving materials is costly and easily redlined in budgets. So it isn’t necessarily “obvious” that it was an attempt to conceal– while the 18 1/2 minute gap on the Nixon audio tapes clearly was.

  68. Here’s what gets me.
For all the attention that adoring Trump loyalists want to put on Biden for something that may have happened 27 years ago, and for all the arguments from those same superfans that Biden is unqualified to be president because of this incident, perhaps the Trump sniffers should try to be intellectually honest and consistent.
Trump was elected president despite literally dozens of women alleging sexual misconduct, and despite multiple marriages and despite multiple extramarital affairs, yet somehow the American people deemed Trump morally fit enough to be president. How could Biden be considered less morally fit than Trump on this front? What would Biden have to do?
Well, to start with: (1) In addition to Ms. Reade, Biden would have to grab at least a couple dozen other pu$$ies; (2) Biden would have to have a notable amount of sex outside his marriage; (3) once he’s well demonstrated his unfaithfulness, the next thing Biden would do is rape Jill Biden once or twice, and then divorce her; (4) after that, Biden would marry a second-rate actress for a few months and then dump her; (5) Biden would then find some skanky Eastern European model with a bad accent who wants a sugar daddy, and then marry her; (6) when this married skanky Eastern European model is knocked up, Biden would then have an afternoon tryst or three with a porn star and Hustler centerfold, separately or together.
That’s the low moral bar that Trump set, and only all six of the above steps taken together would make Biden morally worse in the sexual misconduct arena. For all of Biden’s shortcomings, he’s nowhere near that, not even close.
P.S. This does not mean that I support Biden.

  70. Do I think Google and CNN conspired to remove this video? No. But I will point out that Google Play provided the Larry King show season and episode information either for future use (i.e.: pending distribution deal) or to gauge audience interest. In either case, Google Play didn’t pick and choose what episodes to display – they’re just pulling the available data from a database somewhere. Whether the videos are available to play or not doesn’t explain why that particular episode, or any info relating to it is missing.

  71. @68, Any conspiracy theory is going to need to explain why they put it on their front page (googling “larry king CNN” brings up their Tara Reid article) and then tried to hide it in google play store.

  74. Imagine Tara Reade is telling the truth. She was a partisan democrat and kept this secret for years, and now, the only way her claims are analyzed is obnoxiously. Her ‘supporters’ keep talking about how this is payback for Kavanaugh (meaning they don’t believe her any more than Ford, but they will pretend they do to prove a point). Her supporters believe in far-fetched conspiracies that CNN and Google are memory holing the account (that you can find on Google and CNN really easily). They don’t care if Reade gets justice. They want to improve the power of the fake news defense that Trump counts on every day. Instead of a sober analysis of the evidence, we see people laugh that they might as well vote for Trump (himself with a shocking amount of sexual violence in his past).

If Tara Reade is telling the truth, a compulsive sort of creep like Biden probably did this to a few other staffers. Of course this should have come up when he was vetted for VP.

while the 18 1/2 minute gap on the Nixon audio tapes clearly was.

The 18 1/2 minute gap clearly was an accident, caused by a malfunctioning tape recorder that caused the record head to be pressed down at a point when it should only have been the playback head. There was a buzz, not normally produced. It was nothing like a normal erasure.

But they had a biased panel (or even maybe malicious panel) examine it and they declared it was done on purpose, because there were 9 separate erasures. The 9 separate erasures actually indicates a desperate attempt to hear things.

That picture of Rosemary Woods stretching herself so as to touch to things at the same time, of course is nonsense. Even after it happened the Nixon White House did not realize how it did. They wouldn;t know how it happened if it was an accident. (and maybe even somebody tampered with the tape recorder in the ope that something would get erased. You can’t rule that out.)

It can only be explained by a malfunctioning machine, and that it was malfunctioning there can be no doubt because …whence came the buzz?

It wasn’t the on;y tape recorder there. They had bought many tape recorders of the same model. So when this didn’t work, or stopped working properly, and played back no sound, others were substituted. They didn’t understand that anything had been erased until later and then didn’t realze when.

If you are right that Trump was serious, you have to also be saying Trump intended for people to inject lysol into their blood.

He wanted doctors, and his coronavirus panel, to examine the idea.

You can tell, just from the transcript, that the UV idea was a real thing. Not necessarily a safe or a useful idea, but a thing. And the stories don’t really cite that.

Just thedininfectant and they claim that people wanted to use it and called up a state poiso hotline to ask about it.

I don’t think we’re getting honest summaries as to what the people calling the hotline in Maryland were saying.

And calls to poison hotlines had been growing, in general, for some time. Because more inexperienced people were using these cleansers.

All totally unnecessary because Covid-19 is not spread that way. It;s not staph.

And standing away 6 feet away from someone is no sure fire protection. And passing by someone who is silent is no special danger. It matters how long you stay in proximity.

The Supreme Court on Monday ruled the federal government owes health insurers massive payments from an Obamacare program shielding them from financial risks after the companies accused Washington of reneging on its funding promises.

The 8-1 decision could open the floodgates for federal cash to the insurance industry. Insurers who accused the government of a “bait and switch” claimed they’re owed $12 billion from the Affordable Care Act program.
    ……
The high court agreed with insurers that the congressional spending restrictions didn’t release the government from its original promise to fund the Obamacare program. The court said Congress had created “a rare money-mandating obligation” that later appropriations language couldn’t repeal.

“These holdings reflect a principle as old as the Nation itself: The Government should honor its obligations,” wrote Justice Sonia Sotomayor in the majority opinion.

    ……
But the White House and Senate Republicans blocked such aid in last week’s package.

They said they feared that states and localities would move more slowly to reopen their economies if they received federal assistance. State and local leaders retorted that they will open their economies as soon as public health authorities say it’s safe to do so.

“Every elected official wants to reopen their economy,” said Matthew Chase, executive director of the National Association of Counties. “We are incredibly disappointed that we are left behind and asked to wait for the next package.”

The other argument against federal aid, voiced by McConnell, is that it would bail out states that he said have mismanaged their finances in the past, such as by incurring large pension obligations for teachers and other public employees. In a radio interview Wednesday, McConnell suggested instead that states declare bankruptcy.
    ……
    The comment drew widespread backlash.

“This is grossly irresponsible with a naive sense of what state and local governments do,” tweeted Amy Liu, director of the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program. “Without emergency relief as their revenues crater, state and local governments will not be able to run key programs like unemployment insurance, social services, housing assistance and small business outreach needed to protect people and businesses in this crisis. … The lack of federal aid to state and local governments may force premature reopening of the economy when [covid-19] cases are still rising.”
    …….
“If you want to send the country into an extended depression, sending state and local governments into bankruptcy is a great way to do it,” said a local government budget expert, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Last week, doctors on Long Island in New York started treating (male) Covid-19 patients with estrogen in an effort to increase their immune systems, and next week, physicians in Los Angeles will start treating male patients with another hormone that is predominantly found in women, progesterone, which has anti-inflammatory properties and can potentially prevent harmful overreactions of the immune system.

“There’s a striking difference between the number of men and women in the intensive care unit, and men are clearly doing worse,” said Dr. Sara Ghandehari, a pulmonologist and intensive care physician at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles who is the principal investigator for the progesterone study. She said 75 percent of the hospital’s intensive care patients and those on ventilators are men.
    …….
Both hormones are believed to be safe, especially when used for short durations. Participants will be warned of possible side effects that may be a first for many men, like tenderness in the breast and hot flashes.

If it was deliberate there would have been one erasure, or maybe two or three, and not over the same portion of tape, and also, the sound wouldn’t have been replaced by a buzz, which a normally working tape recorder wouldn’t produce.

  125. Supreme Court Dismisses Challenge to New York City Gun Ordinance
The Supreme Court said on Monday that it would not decide what would have been its first decision on the scope of the Second Amendment in almost a decade, finding that New York City’s repeal of the gun control regulation under challenge had made the matter moot.

When the court agreed to hear the case, the possibility of such a ruling alarmed gun control proponents, who urged New York officials to repeal the regulation.

The city did so, and state lawmakers later enacted a law that seemed to make it impossible for city officials to change their minds.

The regulation, which appeared to be unique in the nation, had allowed residents with so-called premises licenses to take their guns to one of seven shooting ranges in the city. But it prohibited them from taking their guns to second homes and shooting ranges outside the city, even when the guns were unloaded and locked in containers separate from ammunition.

The Supreme Court seemed unlikely to uphold the law, and its decision in the case would have given it an opportunity to elaborate on the scope of Second Amendment rights.

  126. And ‘the single-bullet-theory’ is a fact as well.

    Indeed it is.

The first bullet missed the car entirely, and it was fired about 5 seconds before the second one; the second bullet hit Connally and Kennedy; and the third bullet went into JFK’s head. Oswald’s aim improved with each shot, and Kennedy’s car was moving away from Oswald almost in a straight line.

The driver slowed down (to figure out what it was) rather than, as they are now all trained to do, speeding up and away.

The Warren Commission asserted that there were most likely only two bullets fired.

Science can be a PITA, eh?!

Yes, the ricochet of JFK;s head violated the laws of physics according to some, but Luis Alvarez proved (by mathematics, by experiments with melons, and also by films of U.S. soldiers killed in Vietnam) that the “laws of physics” were wrong.

One of the criticisms of Trump’s handling of this issue is that he has ignored his many opportunities to learn, in private, by attending briefings, reading a book or two, and asking his pros these questions. Instead he really likes winging it on national TV, even after that one couple took that poison he recommended (yeah he did). You’d think he would save recommended treatment miracle fantasies for in private. Then there really would be no such thing as a stupid question. The bully pulpit, to all Americans? Not a good way.

Even in this thread we see folks trying to crack the code in a way that makes Trump’s comments sensible. The goal isn’t the truth. It’s honoring Trump. That’s not the best way to the truth.

We wouldn’t say that about Biden. If Biden started a rambling, weird discussion of injecting disinfectants, we would all agree this proved (or rather verified) that his brain function was not normal. This simply isn’t a normal thing for an American of average intelligence and education to propose on national TV.

Of course, first we got the Trump fanatic standby: deny Trump even said it. Then we got the ‘you just don’t get it’ argument that Trump was referencing some cool UV light and bleach research on the cutting edge of outside the box thinking. Then Trump said he was being sarcastic, which he obviously wasn’t. He lied to our faces, and importantly, the lie was also dumb.

You think this is backing Trump’s idiotic statement?

Why is the first inclination of Donald Trump’s supporters to lash out at the press when he says something ridiculous? Part of it is political expediency, of course. Most of it, though, is completely understandable.

Even when Trump badly mangles science, journalists, who spend vast amounts of their time chasing gotchas, offer a misleading and histrionic rendering of his comments. Trump doesn’t want Americans to inject themselves with disinfectants or ingest bleach and die. Journalists know this.

His theory, in general, is correct, in specific to this incident, idiotic. Trump said the words, lied about saying the words, then just today denied he had responsibility for people doing the thing he said, with his words.

  150. CNN published over 700 articles on the accusations against Kavanaugh in the same period as it wrote 2 article on those against Biden. The former began within days of the accusations being first made, the latter took over 3 weeks following the accusations. The CNN article linked above which addresses the King video is only the 2nd article mentioning them, and it only was published to address accusations against CNN of having the episode personally scrubbed from Google Play. Why the silence if not to protect Biden? It certainly wasn’t silent when it rushed to his defense regarding his dealings in Ukraine. Of course Ukraine was the means through which CNN could politic for impeachment, so Biden didn’t do anything wrong by default.

Most other non-conservative mainstream news organizations, ie MSNBC, NY Times, Washington Post, have also barely covered the story. Never have the accusations even been a topic during the democrat debates. Some, like the NY Times, have even been critical and skeptical of Reade’s accusations, an approach they have yet to apply when it is a Republican being accused. Call it a conspiracy theory if you like, it’s a popular ad hominem attack to use to dismiss inconvenient truths, but there is clear/extreme bias in most of the mainstream press favor of the democratic establishment which leads it to cover for people like Biden, and which appears to be collusion.

In fact, The New York Times’ executive editor Dean Baquet admitted to stealth editing an article on the accusations after the Biden campaign complained that it made it appear as though there are other allegations of sexual harassment against Biden. The problem is, there are multiple other allegations against him, but The Times dismisses these, saying “The Times found no pattern of sexual misconduct by Mr. Biden, beyond the hugs, kisses and touching that women previously said made them uncomfortable.” Ok. So long as they “just” made them uncomfortable.

As for Trump’s comments. Agree with him or not, his opponents do themselves no favor by misrepresenting, misquoting, cherry picking or decontextualizing what he says. He said, “And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning? Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it would be interesting to check that. So, that, you’re going to have to use medical doctors with. But it sounds interesting to me.”

Where does he say to ingest or inject yourself with anything? He specifically said it is something researchers may be able to look into, and, if we get to the point where something beneficial is discovered, it would have to be administered by a doctor.

But we’re both off topic. If the democrats replace Biden, how do they do that at this point? Who do they go with?

Big question. There is no heir, although Biden can name one. If he pulls out after choosing a vice president, it would most likely be that person. If he is forced out, there will be a little bit more freedom.

In New York State yesterday, they cancelled the presidential primary. Every candidate but Biden had withdrawn, and New York State does not hold primaries with just one candidate on the ballot (although it does hold judicial elections with all the same candidates nominated by four different political parties.)

That doesn’t mean the June 28 election will be cancelled altogether statewide. There are still primaries in places for members of the House of Representative, and for the State Senate and Assembly, and maybe somewhere a District Attorney or judges..

Every registered voter (limited to people who have some race to vote on, so mostly Democrats for starters) will be mailed an absentee ballot application. The New York State constitution prohibits no excuse absentee voting, so it’s only an application. If they fill it out, and mail it back in the postage paid envelope, they will be mailed a ballot.

But the polls will also be open, and also probably the more limited locations for the new nine (9) days of early voting.

    Sammy Finkelman (af3697)

  164. No, Trump talked about doctors (or nurses acting under medical instructions) injecting people with disinfectants.

    Dustin (e5f6c3) — 4/27/2020 @ 7:45 pm

No he didn’t. The noun in the sentence was “you.”

Let’s look again (taking this from #154):

“And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning? Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it would be interesting to check that. So, that, you’re going to have to use medical doctors with. But it sounds interesting to me.”

The pronoun is “we” That;s who can “do.” “You” appears in the phrase “you see” “You” there means anyone and everyone. It’s basically a passive statement. What “you” do is see.

“You” also are going to have to use medical doctors.

(It would be better, in Trump’s mind, if a person could do this at home, or with the help of a family member, but it is too complicated to do things that way, or would require specialized equipment. Despite that drawback, it sounds interesting, says Trump. If he does say so himself, he could have added. Unless he got this from somebody else, but it sounds like he’s talking about his own bright idea..)

And he would like (no antecedent, but he clearly is speaking of some people on his coronavirus task force) to check it out. Which means that He’s not ready to recommend it.

The audience of a national TV broadcast is the nation. That’s why some poison control centers are seeing a massive increase in ingested disinfectants.

That predates this. And if this had anything to do with that, it’s the reporting on it.

    Sammy Finkelman (af3697)

  165. Interesting analysis and sentence diagramming, Sammy. Do you think the people who discuss using bleach as medicine are smart enough to parse Trump’s words so carefully (and frankly with cynical intent to reach a particular result)? Do you think it is responsible to suggest extremely toxic chemicals as having medicinal value, on national TV, in a panic?

If a high school teacher said this to his class, it would be unacceptable. If someone grabbed the PA system at the grocery store to say this, they would probably be liable. Let’s all agree Trump’s mental problems have compromised his ability to do his job. We’ll never know how many people this harms, but it’s going to harm some.

  166. Sammy,

I think Trump was asking research doctors to experiment with his ideas about the effect of light and disinfectants on Covid. But everyday people have light and disinfectants, and they might be afraid enough of Covid that they decide to experiment, too.

That struck me as new, because a primary ha s not been canceled before. It seems like New York Sate changed the law in the budget bill they passed about March 31, to allow the removal of candidates from a primary ballot if they’ve withdrawn from the race.

n response to the new coronavirus pandemic, Gov. Andrew Cuomo moved the Democratic primary from April 28 to June 23. Later, a provision was added into the state budget that permits the state Board of Elections to remove from the ballot presidential candidates who have dropped out. If all names other than Joe Biden are removed, the state would be able to cancel the primary. That’s effectively what happened with the Republican presidential primary – President Donald Trump was the only candidate to qualify for the ballot, so the state Board of Elections Republican co-chairs canceled the election rather than have a ballot with just one candidate.

The Sanders campaign didn;t like this. He or they want their people at the convention.

Nott even to experiment, but to examine the idea and consider experimenting.

But everyday people have light and disinfectants, and they might be afraid enough of Covid that they decide to experiment, too.

    But how?

What Trump was doing was make a suggestion that was virtually impossible for anyone to carry out.

And if there was anything here that was irresponsible it was saying that Trump had said to ingest disinfectants.

Because in any dispute between Trump and the media, some people are going to believe Trump over the media and here the major media is now telling people that Trump said to take bleach.

…When he didn’t even say what they say he said!

Yes, the were also saying that what Trump said was terrible, but they did so without even offering a hint of an explaining as to why. It was saying because we said so. They sometimes didn’t offer a single argument sometimes as to why it was bad. That’s going to convince anybody?

I don’t think we should assume people are stupid, because if we do, then we must say that almost anything at all could cause somebody to do a bad thing.

I will say that just talking about disinfectants, in general, in any context, could cause people to try to use them – to clean yes – but misuse them or get into accidents.

It caused a rise in calls to poison control center of 7% one place. Of course most of those calls, or at least the rise was requests for general information.
