Democratic Debate Open Thread

Filed under: General — Dana @ 5:34 pm

[guest post by Dana]

The fifth presidential debate is coming from Atlanta tonight.

The contenders on stage are: Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttigieg, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Andrew Yang, Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar, Tom Steyer and that little aloha sweetie, Tulsi Gabbard.

CNN tells me there are nine things to look for in tonight’s debate. Of course, they may have worded the points a little differently, but no matter:

*It’s Buttigieg’s turn to shine in the spotlight

*Red pill Obama’s admonition and shadow looms large

*Biden’s southern firewall will be tested but he won’t know it’s happening

*The ‘Medicare for All’ fight takes a twist (but still no one will pronounce it utterly ludicrous)

*Sanders may take take off the gloves with Warren (there will be oxygen available, if necessary)

*Voting rights will not be ignored. I missed that. What?

*Kamala Harris will join Hillary Clinton as they both try to find their way out of the woods

*Amy Klobuchar will use her bare hands to take down anyone who gets in her way

*Low polling candidates will be sweating bullets as they know that it’s their last opportunity to publicly audition for the vice-presidency.

Where you can watch it: The debate will be broadcast exclusively on MSNBC and will also stream for free on MSNBC.com and washingtonpost.com, as well as on NBC News and The Washington Post’s mobile apps, according to the Democratic National Committee. Audio of the debate will be available on SiriusXM Channel 118, and TuneIn.

Should be loads of fun!

  1. I like what Jim Geraghty over at National Review Online had to say about it:

This is the seventh night that Democratic candidates have gathered for a nationally televised debate, and that stage still has ten people running for president on it. If you’ve watched them all, you’ve watched 15 hours of arguments about whether critics of Medicare for All were too timid, which candidate was most upset about the president’s latest outrage, preplanned one-liners from Kamala Harris, and Joe Biden trying to finish a sentence with the same thought that he began with moments earlier.

Sounds a lot like what I expect from tonight, but hopefully along with some fireworks from M_ L_____ A____ S______.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  2. @1. Geraghty overlooks the endless allure of live television. Folks love watching auto racing–cars literally going in circles– to see the wall-bangers crash n’ burn.

But the set graphics already are dizzying w/those big letters in motion.

Looks like a used car lot. Test drive the one in white, JVW 😉

  3. And all we have on our side is Donald Trump. Wait. Is that really our side?

    Kevin M (19357e)

  4. Hey, man, your impeachment is stepping on my debate.

    Bugg (ebf485)

  5. Huh?! AmyK raised $17k from ex-boyfriends?? Whatever she’s got– she’s hidin’ it well.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  6. IRT Klobuchar, that’s what’s referred to as either “having skills” or “being a freak”.

    urbanleftbehind (56af07)

  7. Maybe Patterico can explain, but I’m all confused.

Why, if Chinese tariffs are supposed to convince US manufacturers to move assembly back home, why does Trump want to exempt Apple — probably the lowest-hanging target — from these tariffs? Does he hope for their support in 2020? Did they promise to stay at his hotels?

Just kidding about Pat explaining; I’m fairly clear about his thoughts on tariffs. But Trump seems to be a master at undermining his own arguments.

    Kevin M (19357e)

  8. Someone should ask Bernie what the cost of his medical care– hospitalization, heart medication and so forth– costs. And what percentage of it is covered under his Senate/government health plan.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  9. Whatever she’s got ON THEM – she’s hidin’ it well.

    FIFY

    Kevin M (19357e)

  10. I’m now watching with the sound off. Bernard Sanders is a complete nut case; would we really ever elect someone who gesticulates that much?

Today is Joe Biden’s birthday. He’s 93 or 77 or something.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  11. Why, if Chinese tariffs are supposed to convince US manufacturers to move assembly back home, why does Trump want to exempt Apple — probably the lowest-hanging target — from these tariffs? Does he hope for their support in 2020?

Someone has probably told him that he can steal away some Silicon Valley votes if Elizabeth Warren is the nominee and she insists upon promising her wealth tax.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  12. And what percentage of it is covered under his Senate/government health plan.

It would not surprise me to find out that Bernie had refused to authorize the payroll deduction. Probably doesn’t have Part B of Medicare either.

    Kevin M (19357e)

  13. Turned back on the sound as soon as Andrew Yang started talking. Asked about government-run daycare, he talks about family leave instead. Way to dance away from the tough question, Andy.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  14. Stock market. Ponzi-scheme type stocks that are based on market value instead of book value take a plunge, stock market takes a plunge, economy appears to take a plunge, looks bad for the orange.

    nk (dbc370)

  15. Now he pivots back to the UBI. Jeeze.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  16. Someone should ask JoeyBee what his hair transplant and brain surgery cost and what percentage was picked up by his government Senate healthcare plan.

    And, of course, plagiarism.

  17. Who’s the cute gal asking the questions? Is she older than Miley Cyrus?

  20. Meow! Tulsi and Kamala [no, not a new detective show on Fox] got into a catfight.

Dang it! Just now? I had the sound back off when Kamala started to bloviate.

  21. @17. Ashley Parker -WaPO reporter– co-sponsor of debate w/MSNBC.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  22. Streyer is a chump, but I like his necktie.

Does Elizabeth Warren own any other earrings than those little gold balls? Are the actually permanently-implanted hearing aids?

    JVW (54fd0b)

  23. @20. No, earlier, about 15-20mins., mins., ago. Tulsi held her own.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  24. Booker’s necktie is as boring as he is, but it’s not nearly as crazy.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  25. Here you go, JVW.

    Dana (cb74ca)

  26. Thanks DCSCA. Ms. Parker is the one in the plum, right?

    JVW (54fd0b)

  27. Speaking of plum/purple, I note that it is what Sen. Lieawatha has chosen for the evening. Remember Election Night 2016 when all of the Hillary Clinton people wore purple, I’m sure trying to deliver the subtle message that they would be bringing Red and Blue together? Good times, good times.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  28. 17, 21 you meant cute as in precocious, not cute as in Lauer hit that.

    urbanleftbehind (56af07)

  29. Tulsi knows white works for her.

    Dana (cb74ca)

  30. Mayor Pete has the kind of five o’clock shadow that supposedly sunk Richard Nixon sixty years ago.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  31. Seriously, dude, touch it up with an electric razor before you come on stage.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  32. @22. The “Librarian Look” wears thin. Don’t any of these candidates have media consultants? It’s pretty bad when Rachel Maddow looks better on camera than the candidate herself.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  33. @30/31. Maybe he wants to look ‘butch’ tonight.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  34. M_ L_____ A____ S______ wants us all to eat strawberries that cost $6 per pint. Sigh.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  35. I wish Gabbard had more specifics. She’s has some well spoken broad generalities, but too many platitudes.

    Nic (896fdf)

  36. @29. Yeah– couldn’t miss her- EZ white balance adjustment for the TV cameras, too.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  37. Joe Biden saved the planet?

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  38. @35. She got ‘pretty specific’ in her catfight w/Kamala.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  39. Streyer vs. Biden with the sound off looks like two guys in the retirement home fighting over whether the TV should be set to Matlock or the Waltons.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  40. @37 I imagine he probably voted for some environmental laws in the Senate. That’s probably close enough for political standards.

    Nic (896fdf)

  41. Watch the BP, Bernie! Remember your heart attack.

    We do.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  42. She got ‘pretty specific’ in her catfight w/Kamala.

I LOVE that she called her a liar. So true. And Kamala gave us an absolutely rehearsed line regarding M_ L_____ A____ S______, just as Jim Geraghty had predicted.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  43. I imagine he probably voted for some environmental laws in the Senate. That’s probably close enough for political standards.

It counted when Al Gore claimed to have taken the lead in creating the Internet. Never get in the way of a politician and undeserved credit.

  45. Biden’s scowl always looks like he just caught me letting my dog crap on his lawn.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  46. Not fair; cheap shot at Trump, Bernie: it’s always 3 o’clock in the morning some where.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  47. Biden’s scowl always looks like he just caught me letting my dog crap on his lawn.

Watching with the sound off is very elucidating. I know I am not a neutral observer by any means, but all of the candidates look so goddammed angry. And by the way their lips are moving I get the sense that they are talking in rather loud and staccato tones. I know that is catnip to their party right now, but I wonder if they wouldn’t be better off dialing it back a bit and trying to come across as thoughtful and sincere instead of as rage monkeys.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  48. Klobuchar looks like she has a really painful rock stuck in her shoe, and she has to put all of her weight on that foot for some reason.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  49. Mr. French noted that Lizzie Warren’s decline started when she gave out the details of her Medicare-For-All plan, and none other than the New York Times shredded her Big Idea. I don’t think she’ll recover because her opponents read the New York Times and they know how to take it down. She’s just not a good enough politician to climb out of it, IMO.

    Paul Montagu (e08479)

  50. Bernard Sanders would give nightmares to small children.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  51. Biden at the podium looks like my late grandfather did— when standing at a urinal in an airport Men’s Room. Probably a two-shaker, too.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  52. I don’t think she’ll recover because her opponents read the New York Times and they know how to take it down. She’s just not a good enough politician to climb out of it, IMO.

“I’ve got a plan for that too” is supposed to leave us with the sense of a competent visionary in our midst, but it just makes me think of a proto-totalitarian busybody.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  53. Liz has one thing going for her: she’ll out live Biden. Television adds weight and Bien still looks like a light breeze or cough from Putin could knock him over.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  54. @50. Or a heart attack. 😉

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  55. I know this is a Democrat debate, but there is so very little pushback on these candidate when they espouse the typical progressive views (yeah, I know this is MSNBC). For instance, when Yang says that we have to do more for young men to keep them on the straight-and-narrow, where is the question as to whether fatherless homes are a problem? But no, we can’t make single mothers feel like they are anything less than perfectly virtuous.

Now Biden is bloviating about campus violence, but no one is going to ask him if the Obama Administration’s ugly encouragement of kangaroo courts to adjudicate sexual assault claims made things worse by unfairly tarring college men as serial rapists.

    JVW (54fd0b)

    Dana (cb74ca)

  62. And you know what, Amy, Trump will say to you: ‘Wear red; you look like a fire plug.’

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  63. None of these people can beat Trump.

And that includes ‘I’m now sorry I stopped and frisked you’ Michael Bloomberg and ‘Forgive me for sounding like I inhale helium before every word’ Devon Patrick.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  64. Sigh. Now Gabbard’s in a cat-fight with Buttigieg (I have no idea if I spelled that correctly). I don’t think it’s Buttigieg she needs to overtake.

  65. @64. He’s leading in Iowa and she wants to make it that far. Biden just hopes he makes it to the car.

    Hey, Joe

    Yeah Bobby?

    Why don’t you take her?

    You a fool?
I don’t want no woman with no skinny legs

    Dude…

    Dave (1bb933)

  75. Out of all of em I like Klobuchar the best. Not sure she can go toe to toe with the Donald, but not sure any of them can. I like that she flat out asked moderate Republicans to vote for her. Why is Joe Biden doing so monstrously well in SC? I think those respondents are making a choice borne of loyalty and nostalgia, not reality.

    JRH (52aed3)

  76. Also I kind of like Booker. He seems decent. But not Presidential.

  77. Mayor Pete talks a good game but he’s too eager. Kobuchar kind of put him in his place in a midwestern-nice way.

    JRH (52aed3)

  78. I just got a fundraising email from M_ L_____ A____ S______. She’s going all in on the “let’s stop being partisan Democrats and put country before party” angle. Here’s what the email message said:

    JVW—

    Are you watching this debate!?

Just now on the presidential debate stage in Atlanta, Kamala Harris had the audacity to go after Tulsi for… daring to go on Fox News during the Obama administration. Harris displayed the lack of vision, leadership and foresight to declare that only those who toe the line of the Democratic establishment and refuse to speak to Americans they consider “deplorables” are allowed to be crowned the Democratic nominee.

She’s out of touch. Kamala Harris may have a fancy slogan that says she’s “for the people” but she’s clearly for the few. The elite. The DC establishment and the tired status quo. Tulsi scares her, because we’re not playing by these undemocratic rules. We’re a movement of Americans who are reaching beyond party lines, to problem solve and tackle the challenges of our time.

Tulsi can beat Trump in 2020 and here’s why: Her message for the people is resonating with Americans who feel left behind by our divisive political climate, and the corrupt corporate media in the pocket of the military industrial complex. The fact that Tulsi can go on Fox News, CNN, NBC and Joe Rogan in one week is not something to apologize for, it’s necessary in order to speak to all Americans. It’s patriotism that drove Tulsi to serve and it’s patriotism that unites us all in this moment.

I give her a lot of credit for sticking to her guns.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  79. Hawaiians need Tulsi to be the govna. swimming with dolphins today what a country. Yesterday the mana rays were following me for my 2 mile swim. Long live Hapuna beach.

    Mg (49e38e)

  80. @47. Wise way to watch, JVW. Yes, consternation; they’re likely fed up with this format and process.

You can learn a lot– about television w/t sound down. One of my first classes toward my MS in TV Production instructed us to turn down the sound and just watch the images for hour of a televised program- not a movie but a television broadcast. It’s a visual medium where what is said is less important than what is seen; the pictures communicate quite a bit by themselves, as you noticed. For instance, you can watch football w/o an audio feed; it’s a linear game to telecast. Basketball, soccer and hockey as well. Baseball, less so. You’ll notice golf cuts quickly from shot to shot to project ‘motion’ as well. Motion is key in television; something always should be moving; you’ll seldom see a ‘static’ broadcast television image for more than 3 to 5 seconds.

Sorry I missed the fun, but I had some drying paint I had to keep an eye on.

I’ve been told Booker said some things that led some people to believe he might be a secret capitalist, Biden and Sanders said some things that led some people to believe their water glasses had been spiked with LSD, Warren said some things that led some people to believe she was under the impression she was running for schoolmarm, and a couple of other candidates said some things that led some people to believe they weren’t sufficiently America-hating enough to apply the coup de grâce to our little experiment in Western Civilization – was that pretty much it?

  98. Fiona Hill ripped a new hole into Trump and Nunes:

Fiona Hill tells impeachment inquiry about a ‘fictional narrative’ on Ukrainian interference

Fiona Hill, the former White House adviser on Russia, opened her testimony before the impeachment inquiry Thursday with withering criticism of Republican attempts to sow doubt that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

“This is a fictional narrative that has been perpetrated and propagated by the Russian security services,” Hill said in her opening statement.
    ….
“ Some of you on this committee appear to believe that Russia and its security services did not conduct a campaign against our country,” she said…..

“The unfortunate truth is that Russia was the foreign power that systematically attacked our democratic institutions,” Hill said. “It is beyond dispute.” ….

Hill said she sees such claims as a dangerous distortion of what happened in 2016, while warning that Russia is continuing to seek to take advantage of divisions in U.S. politics.
“I refuse to be part of an effort to legitimize an alternate narrative that the Ukrainian government is a U.S. adversary, and that Ukraine — not Russia — attacked us in 2016,” she said.

She described the United States as “being torn apart. Truth is questioned. Our highly professional and expert career Foreign Service is being undermined.” At the same time, she said, “Russia’s security services and their proxies have geared up to repeat their interference in the 2016 election. We are running out of time to stop them.” ….

    Rip Murdock (ff876c)

  99. Words I would love to hear:

Tulsi: “I won’t be lectured on ethics by someone who slept her way onto this stage!”

    Kevin M (19357e)

  100. It’s patriotism that drove Tulsi to serve and it’s patriotism that unites us all in this moment.

    More:

Tulsi: “I served my country, and continue to do so. Who did you serve?”

    Kevin M (19357e)

  101. Of course Russia attempted to interfere in the 2016 election. So did China. So what? This is a complete perspective loss. 99% of disinformation was produced domestically, a good part of that from the national media (yes, this includes Fox). Election campaigns have bee wall-to-wall lies since Jefferson went after Adams.

    Kevin M (19357e)

  102. She described the United States as “being torn apart. Truth is questioned. Our highly professional and expert career Foreign Service is being undermined.” At the same time, she said, “Russia’s security services and their proxies have geared up to repeat their interference in the 2016 election. We are running out of time to stop them.” ….

Truth is being questioned. We must put a stop to that. Perhaps some laws criminalizing the questioning of truth? A Truth Board to OK political commercials (or candidates)? Maybe the Iranian model where one Supreme Authority vets all candidates?

    Kevin M (19357e)

  103. Weird question: as the field winnows downward – whose (of the remaining or recently exited D candidaes) endorsements would help Gabbard and whose endorsements would hurt her? At this point, someone might want to buy the first drink so that they are prime for an upper cabinet post.

    urbanleftbehind (5eecdb)

  104. @98 And she’s engaging in propaganda, either intentionally or unintentionally. Later in the testimony, the report that the committee voted on was mentioned.

Why is Joe Biden doing so monstrously well in SC?
