NY Post: Woman Claims Husband Left Her For Rep. Ilhan Omar

Filed under: General — Dana @ 5:40 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Well, this is shocking news::

A Washington, DC, mom says her political-consultant husband left her for Rep. Ilhan Omar, according to a bombshell divorce filing obtained by The Post.

Dr. Beth Mynett says her cheating spouse, Tim Mynett, told her in April that he was having an affair with the Somali-born US representative — and that he even made a “shocking declaration of love” for the Minnesota congresswoman before he ditched his wife, alleges the filing, submitted in DC Superior Court on Tuesday.

The physician, 55, and her 38-year-old husband — who has worked for left-wing Democrats such as Omar and her Minnesota predecessor, Keith Ellison — have a 13-year-old son together.

“The parties physically separated on or about April 7, 2019, when Defendant told Plaintiff that he was romantically involved with and in love with another woman, Ilhan Omar,” the court papers say.

According to the filing, Tim Mynett made it clear there is not a chance of working this out, and the marriage is over. Further, from the report: “Defendant’s more recent travel and long work hours now appear to be more related to his affair with Rep. Omar than with his actual work commitments.”

Anyway, there apparently have been whispers about this for some times, and there have been photos of Omar with Mynett out in public, with her daughter.

And then there is this tibdit:

The 37-year-old congresswoman and mom of three paid Tim Mynett and his E. Street Group approximately $230,000 through her campaign since 2018 for fundraising consulting, digital communications, internet advertising and travel expenses.

In light of that bit of news, the National Legal and Policy Center announced it will be filing a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission:

“This arrangement where Ilhan is paying her lover consulting fees could be illegal if he’s not doing the work,” said National Legal and Policy Center Chairman Peter Flaherty.

“And we’ll be asking the FEC for an investigation to determine the nature and level of his work product.”

Further:

More than $70,000 of that money was transferred in 14 payments to Mynett’s E. Street Group LLC between April 22 and June 11, records show.

The fact that Omar’s campaign committee continued to pay Tim Mynett’s firm for months after his wife said he left her for the congresswoman isn’t outright illegal.

A public-affairs specialist at the FEC noted that the agency’s regulations include a section that says, “Salary payments to a member of a candidate’s family are not considered personal use, provided that the family member is providing bona fide services to the campaign and at a rate that does not exceed fair market value of the services provided.”

The question is whether that actually occurred here, Flaherty said.

He noted that six of the expenditures in Omar’s filings are simply labeled “travel expenses” worth $12,673.43 — and that in Beth Mynett’s legal papers, she questioned whether her husband’s purported work travel was all for legitimate purposes.

“The law states that travel expenses have to be itemized, but Ilhan’s campaign is just reporting large amounts for ‘travel,’” Flaherty said. “Our question is whether this was necessary travel or whether she was just bringing her boyfriend along for the company.”

Just last month, it became public knowledge that Rep. Omar and her husband, Ahmed Hirsi, were splitting up. Again. She first married Hirsi in a religious ceremony in 2002 and they split up in 2008. Here’s a look at the confusing timeline:

2002: She marries Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi in a religious ceremony but it is not recognized legally. The pair go on to have two children.

2008: She and Hirsi separate. Because the marriage was never recognized by law, neither is the separation

2009: Omar marries Ahmed Elmi in Minneapolis

2010: He enrolls at North Dakota State University to study fine art and lives with Omar as well as her first husband

2011: Omar claims she and Elmi split this year and he went back to the UK. She reconciles with Hirsi

2012: Omar and Hirsi have their third child.

Elmi is still in the US according to college officials and social media

2013: Elmi starts working in London

2017: Omar divorces Elmi

2018: Omar marries Hirsi in a civil ceremony

2018: The marriage is brought up during Omar’s campaign for congress. She denies it and it is largely ignored because of the lack of proof around it

How this will play out with her constituents and her community, as well as family members is yet to be seen. I wondered how a Muslim woman would be regarded in this situation, and saw this:

So far, no tweet from President Trump about the shocking news. And so far, no public comment from Rep. Omar, who doesn’t really owe anybody a comment. The dissolution of a marriage is a sad and awful thing, especially when children are involved, and especially when the world is watching. Unfortunately, you choose to become a public figure, you can wave goodbye to your privacy. Whether anything unlawful occurred with the payments to Mynett is a separate issue.

  1. Ugh. What a messy situation all the way around…

It doesn’t have to be. DC is a no-fault jurisdiction. This sh!t (pardon my French) that the hubby is alleging is not only entirely unnecessary, it is entirely irrelevant legally. There are only two grounds for divorce:
    1. Both spouses want the divorce and they have been living separate apart for six months; or
    2. Only one spouse wants the divorce and they have been living separate and apart for one year.

It’s just plain wanting to hurt.

  4. Sorry. Not “hubby”. “Wronged wife”. I did read the post but it somehow got into my head that Omar’s husband was the one asking for the divorce by the time I wrote my comment. But it’s the same thing, though it’s the other wronged spouse.

    nk (dbc370)

  5. She first married Hirsi in a religious ceremony in 2002

Actually, I don’t think we even really know that. It might be true, I think I read something tothe effect that she made an applicaton for a marriage license. Its even less clear if they did anying to divorce in 2008.

    2017: Omar divorces Elmi

2018: Omar marries Hirsi in a civil ceremony

She did that for political reasons.. She was gettng involved in politics and preparing to run for Congress

2018: The marriage is brought up during Omar’s campaign for congress. She denies it and it is largely ignored because of the lack of proof around it.

Which marriage? The one to Hirsi or the one to Elmi? Or was that the idea that Elmi was her brother? (which, considering that he was not the father of her children, she might have been resposible for?)

  11. I’ll say this for Ilhan Omar, she sure has assimilated American family values and sexual mores.

    nk (dbc370)

  12. She will be lauded by feminists as a woman standing on her own two feet and doing what she wants with her life, while conveniently ignoring how she grievously wounded another woman to get what she wanted.

    Dana (fdf131)

  13. I guess I’d find this more inflammatory if

    1. I’d ever had a high opinion of Omar.
    2. There is any evidence to support that she misappropriated campaign funds. Would like to see the results of the FEC investigation.
    3. I ever thought she was basing her politics on her personal morality. When family values people do this sort of thing there’s an element of hypocrisy, just as there is any time someone steps off of a private jet to talk about CO2 emissions.

But at this point, it’s the sad story of two people that worked together starting a relationship and fracking up the relationships they already had.
Oh, for people who had a high opinion of Omar’s character this is maybe a problem. But I don’t think there are many of them.

  18. “Well, this is shocking news”

Certainly news, but given how she arranged her previous marriage to her brother, hardly ‘shocking’.

I guess I’d find this more inflammatory if…

Yes, it’s almost like you don’t really have any cultural connection to her that would inspire you to hold her to a higher standard, or really any basic standard like ‘doesn’t violate immigration laws’ or ‘doesn’t stan terrorists who share her religion whenever she gets an opportunity’. Like she’s just a convenient placeholder performing a function rather than a fellow citizen who you might see as…I don’t know…representing you.

But if she VIOLATED CAMPAIGN FINANCE LAWS, boy howdy, it’s on! Alien tribal affiliations and reprehensible behavior in the pursuit of power don’t matter if you’re representing America, but if you mess up the FEC paperwork, it’s OVER for you as far as I’m concerned!

Forgive me if I’m not actually convinced to subscribe to your newsletter.

  19. If I were to spitball, Dana, the women with Somali heritage may react differently than the men, but it’s a religiously conservative community and they take their traditions seriously. It can’t help that she’s a two-time loser at marriage.

  20. nk is just jealous that he didn’t post it first.

  21. Since you’re here, Dana, can you take my comment out of purgatory in the Bolsanaro thread?

    Paul Montagu (a2342d)

  22. Done.

    Dana (fdf131)

  23. Garcias!

    Paul Montagu (a2342d)

  24. Ms. Omar has directed a lot of campaign cash to her lover’s consulting firm.

Here’s the odd thing: The overwhelming majority of Omar’s funds spent on the E Street Group were paid after she won the contested primary and during the totally noncompetitive general election race in her D+26 district. Contrary to FEC rules, Omar’s filings did not designate whether her E Street Group disbursements (or any of her disbursements) were for the primary election or the general election.
The Omar campaign payments to the E Street Group, often reported as “fundraising consulting” fees on her FEC filings, have accelerated in the 2020 cycle. Her campaign has spent $160,000 at E Street this year, the campaign off year. That’s nearly one in every three dollars spent on her reelection (again, not including transfers to other campaigns or committees) going to her alleged lover.

    Paul Montagu (a2342d)

  25. “In Somalia, the penalty under sharia law is stoning to death.”

She shows her face in NorCal, there might be a rock or two chucked…

  26. 15…complicated, too.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  27. If he was doing the work, fine, whatever. As far as her morals are concerned, that’s her problem and maybe her constituents. Her choices seem to have been sketchy at best, IMO, but she’s not my rep.

    Nic (896fdf)

  28. I find this hard to believe as they are not related.

    mg (8cbc69)

  29. The FEC is disabled right now.

The terms of all (but one?) of its memers have expired. That’s all riht, if no replacements are named, the terms are extended, but it has only 4 members, and now the 3rd one has resigned as of the end of this week.

With 3 members it has no quorum and cannot make any decisionsm although its staff can continue to operate.

By law, no more than 3 members can be members of the same political party.

Trump named a Republican two years ago but he has not been confirmed. Usually, he Senate confirms members in bunches, one Republican and one Democrat. There is enough comity in the Senate stilll left so that they are not going to not do that.

It is speculated that the Senate might now confirm Trump’s nominee since the balance n the FEC would now be even.

  30. Time123 (ca85c9) — 8/27/2019 @ 7:33 pm Oh, for people who had a high opinion of Omar’s character Some people might have thouht she had principles – bad principles, but principles. Or is it principals? But not even her near or actual anti-semitism is genuine.

The question is: Why does she consider that to be in her self interest?

It’s probably all about the Benjamins.

    Sammy Finkelman (42d229)

  31. “I guess I’d find this more inflammatory if…”

I emphasized the parts your wrote have have nothing to do with this post. It makes me think you don’t really care about the issues raised in this post and just view it as a means to attack her. She doesn’t represent me. I don’t live in her district. The represents the people of her district. If I did live there I wouldn’t have voted for her.

I believe in the rule of law. I want all elected officials held to the law. I’m fine with districts electing cooks I don’t like such as AOC, Omar and Steve King. That’s the choice of the people that live there and I respect that. But they need to follow the law.

Seems like a pretty reasonable stance to me.

  33. In follow up on my original comment here is a more information about the financial aspect.

Of the $145,406 reported earnings by the E Street Group during the 2018 campaign cycle, $62,674 came from Omar’s campaign. Not counting payroll taxes and transfers to Minnesota’s Democratic Party, E Street Group was Omar’s second-largest vendor, according to FEC data. From Labor Day through the end of the year, E Street Group ate up more than 10% of her campaign’s spending (not counting transfers to other campaigns).

Here’s the odd thing: The overwhelming majority of Omar’s funds spent on the E Street Group were paid after she won the contested primary and during the totally noncompetitive general election race in her D+26 district. The Omar campaign payments to the E Street Group, often reported as “fundraising consulting” fees on her FEC filings, have accelerated in the 2020 cycle. If she’s misappropriated campaign funds thats a crime and should be prosecuted. Not saying this is certain proof, I can imagine explanations for all of it, but it looks like probably cause for an investigation to me.
