  1. Yesterday Allahpundit posted some amusing excerpts from the recently red-pilled Mooch’s interview with Vanity Fair:

(Scaramucci:) The red line was the racism—full-blown racism. He can say that he’s not a racist, and I agree with him, okay? And let me explain to you why he’s not a racist, ’cause this is very important. He’s actually worse than a racist. He is so narcissistic, he doesn’t see people as people. He sees them as objects in his field of vision. And so therefore, that’s why he has no empathy. That’s why he’s got his thumb up in the air when he’s taking a picture with an orphan. That’s why when someone’s leaning over the desk and asks [Nobel Prize–winning human rights activist Nadia Murad], “Well, what happened to your family members?”—they were murdered—he just looks at her and says, “Okay, when are we getting coffee here?”

You know, he doesn’t look at people—and by the way, if you and I were in his field of vision and he had a cold and the two of us had to die for him to get a Kleenex, you’re f***ing dead. I mean, there’s no chance. You understand that, right?

He goes on to lament the absence of a credible primary alternative with an apt Game of Thrones reference:

“We need an Arya Stark, okay? We gotta take this guy out because this is like the Night King. The minute the Night King is vaporized, all the zombies are gonna fall by the wayside, right?”

  2. Navarro and Kudlow (who should know better) have been hitting the talk circuits, claiming that tariffs are not hurting American businesses and consumers, echoing Trump. These people oare delusional at best, and economically ignorant at worst. Or they’re lying.

  3. I guess eleven days in the White House was not long enough for Scaramucci to be eligible for the tax deferment he was looking for from the sale of his hedge fund.

Would you buy a used car from Scaramucci? I’m not Trump’s biggest fan, but I wouldn’t trust that foul-mouthed dwarf (Scaramucci) to tell me the time of day.

claiming that tariffs are not hurting American businesses and consumers, echoing Trump. These people oare delusional at best, and economically ignorant at worst. Or they’re lying. </blockquote. No, they're just saying, or saying without saying, that Trump is lucky.

The devaluation of the yuan is compensating for the tariff, and they made an exception for end of year goods becaue contracts had already been written. Postponing tariffs till December 16 allows import oontracts to be re-written and the price dropped.

A second reason they (or was it only Kudlow?) said the tariffs are not/would not impact American consumers is that manufacturers are moving production out of China and into other countries.

  6. The idiot Bay Area language sanitizers strike again.

The words “felon,” “offender,” “convict,” “addict” and “juvenile delinquent” would be part of the past in official San Francisco parlance under new “person first” language guidelines adopted by the Board of Supervisors.
Going forward, what was once called a convicted felon or an offender released from jail will be a “formerly incarcerated person,” or a “justice-involved” person or simply a “returning resident.”
Parolees and people on criminal probation will be referred to as a “person on parole,” or “person under supervision.”
A juvenile “delinquent” will become a “young person with justice system involvement,” or a “young person impacted by the juvenile justice system.”
And drug addicts or substance abusers will become “a person with a history of substance use.”
“We don’t want people to be forever labeled for the worst things that they have done,” Supervisor Matt Haney said.

It would hurt a felon’s delicate sensibilities–committing a felony and going to jail for that felony–to be labeled a felon.

    Paul Montagu (a2342d)

  7. I take it that “San Franciscans” are now “persons residing in San Francisco”, but not “residents of San Francisco”, because “resident” is as much a depersonizing (not “dehumanizing” because “dehumanizing” is anthropocentric and disregards the personhood of other species) label as “San Franciscan”?

  16. It would hurt a felon’s delicate sensibilities–committing a felony and going to jail for that felony–to be labeled a felon.

This probably derives from the disability rights movement, and the fight over terminology. Is (an obvious example here) Trump a narcissist or a person with narcissism?. The overall idea is that by calling a felon “felon” you are making his legal status of felon the only important thing about him, whereas by saying “person convicted of/in jail for/a felony” you are stating there are other, possibly more important things, about the person. After all, which is more important to know about Trump: that he is a narcissist or that he is currently POTUS?

  17. The conservative talk radio phenomenon and its influence on the movement should be talked about more because of how it’s affected the political landscape. I used to listen to Rush in the late 1980s when he was a novelty, then listened to more of the talkers as they filled the dial. I even wrote a 3-part series (here, here and here) about the talk radio scene 14 years ago.
I pretty much quit listening after the 2012 election. Now that there’s been some distance, I think political talk radio has been a net negative to conservatism. It appeals more to emotions than facts, and it’s all the more obvious to me that the talkers are chasing populist ratings, not conservative values. Hence Trump.

Over the ensuring decades, conservative radio talkers commanded increasingly larger audiences, including many high-propensity voters. The 1994 GOP revolution, when the party won majorities in the House and Senate and cleaned up in down ballot races nationwide, showed the power of talk radio in full force. Limbaugh had spent the prior two years lambasting President Bill Clinton, and his message stuck on the right. Leaders of the new House Republican majority named Limbaugh an honorary member.
Conservative talk radio, though, was never about propping up Republican establishment leaders. Rather, it always had a particular populist bent, which is where Trump comes in. Long before the one-time real estate developer, casino owner and Apprentice star strode down Trump Tower’s gold-plated escalator, he mouthed off on issues that were regular talk radio fodder. Concerns over illegal immigration were talk radio staple for decades. A broader concern about “elites” telling average Americans what to do also appealed to listeners’ sensibilities. Trump, a self-proclaimed billionaire, exploited this endlessly with rants over international trade deals he claimed meant the U.S. continually lost jobs and international standing, to Mexico, China, and any number of other bogeyman, real or perceived.
Talk Radio’s America further shows how some of the biggest names in the industry now set a precedent for Trump’s rise and appeal.
“Trump owes his political career to the likes of Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham, and to conservative social media. They gave him a platform, and, if his rhetoric is any indication, trained him in political oratory. His election is the purest product of the revolution Limbaugh began,” writes Rosenwald, a prolific tweeter about American political history, Philadelphia Phillies baseball, and other topics.

  18. Donald Trump’s latest conspiracy theory target? Fox News.

Before he boarded Air Force One to fly back to Washington on Sunday afternoon, President Donald Trump was asked about a recent Fox News poll that showed him in serious trouble vis a vis the 2020 election. Trump, as he is wont to do, went off at length on his once-favorite network.

The poll showed Trump’s approval rating in the low 40s and had him losing by six or more points to Democratic 2020 rivals Sens. Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and former Vice President Joe Biden.

Unsurprisingly, Trump didn’t like that. Here’s the key bit:

“Well, Fox has always given me — I’ll tell you, Fox is a lot different than it used to be, I can tell you that. … Fox has changed. And my worst polls have always been from Fox. There’s something going on at Fox, I’ll tell you right now. And I’m not happy with it.”

“There’s something going on at Fox.”

    […]

Trump’s worldview doesn’t understand that nuances like this can exist. Again, you are either for him or against him. No gray area. Simply put: Trump wants Fox to be state-sponsored TV of the sort they have in authoritarian regimes like Russia and North Korea.

So the Fox poll does not compute for Trump. And the way he handles things that don’t compute is to assume some dark conspiracy that is out to get him.

  20. “Kudlow (who should know better)”

I’m not so sure about that. Some of Kudlow’s recent predictions:

Deficit would decline in 2018 – increased 18%
4-5% growth off tax cuts – closer to 2.5%
GDP spikes as high as 5% – max of 3.5%

Not to mention that he completely missed the Great Recession. You’re better off assuming the compete opposite of what he predicts.

  22. San Francisco is currently populated by little people dwarfed by those of generations before them that actually built a magnificent city… a city that current residents befoul with human waste and wackadoo politics. 24. Kudlow has always claimed to be a free trader, but he, like practically every other Republican, has abandoned his principles and lost all sensibility. Navarro is simply economically ignorant.

    https://reason.com/2019/08/19/peter-navarro-says-data-show-americans-arent-paying/

I actually watched that interview on CNN. (Just call it opposition research.) The man is in complete denial, or he is an inveterate liar.

I remember the Freeze of 1983. I’ll never forget it. Woke up Christmas morning, went outside, and everything was covered in inches of ice. I mean, everything, everywhere, inches of ice all around Temperatures had dropped to 16 degrees overnight and didn’t get above 32 for weeks.

It was a freak weather event, an arctic blast that blew in from Canada. Something like that happens maybe once every thousand years. It’s what killed small family farms throughout the Midwest corridor, and in Texas from the panhandle to northern Mexico, but it hit the Rio Grande Valley particularly hard.

Prior to that the RGV had become the agricultural center of the US and the citrus capital of the world. The reason why is because all the land is about 80 feet below sea level; low-lying ground, fertile soil, humid air, temperate climate, combine to make the ideal environment for agriculture. Then, practically anything could be grown here, from sugar cane to citrus, and it was.

Remember TexSun orange juice? It was the No. 1 best selling brand, made from oranges grown here. The ruby red grapefruit comes from here. Yeah, I knew the farmer; he used to send a crate of grapefruit to the White House every week, when Reagan was in office.

Unfortunately, the low-lying ground and humid air made the RGV the ultimate victim of an arctic blast.

Everything died. The Valley became a frozen wasteland. And it was an economic disaster. There were over 40,000 foreclosures within three months, and thousands more to follow in the months and years ahead; banks failed, businesses closed.

Arctic Armageddon, that’s what I would call it, because it completely destroyed the agricultural base of the economy. Pretty much the same thing happened throughout the Midwest, although to a lesser extent. It’s what led to the development of corporate farms. The government came in an tired to help–yeah, right, “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help you”–but what the government was offering was a bailout with conditions–you can only grow certain crops and sell at a certain volume. And most of the farmers said, to hell with that, I don’t work for the government.

So what happened is that private equity firms swept in and bought family farms in foreclosure, then formed corporate farms. That didn’t happen so much in the RGV. It’s one thing to replace a wheat or corn field. That would take a season or two. To replace a citrus grove takes at least a decade.

Economic growth and development did not return to the RGV for almost twenty years. I know, because my mother made the smart move, as a broker she cornered the repo market. That’s what made her real estate company the most successful in South Texas.

I went into real estate when my father was dying of cancer to help my mother; resigned from my teaching positions in high school and at college. That was during the financial bubble and burst, between 2004 and 2014. You have no idea. We, just us two, were dealing with 120-odd properties a year. (The average realtor nationwide deals with 6 properties a year.) It was the financial crisis create by the government that forced banks to lower their lending standards. Loans were given to people who didn’t have credit; houses were sold to people who couldn’t afford the payments, and the result massive foreclosures. It was insane.

What killed the Valley was a freak weather event. What killed the economy was government intervention. And we see the same with these idiotic tariffs and trade wars.

  25. “Since there was nothing in the MSM about what happened in Portland on Saturday, here’s some info:”

The linked article is at least 50% bullshirt.

In the second paragraph, it mentions the Oath Keepers. The Oath Keepers specifically did not attend because they felt that the organizers weren’t doing enough to keep nazis and white supremacists away.

The “young girl” mentioned further down is in fact a 24 year old woman, who attends these things with her father, who shows up in body armor with the intention of getting into fights.

The buses were brought there by a nazi group, and had been attacking other people. They are the ones who brought the hammers. This was covered in detail at the bottom of the previous protest thread.

All in all, this meets the high standards of a typical daily caller article.

  26. ” It was the financial crisis create by the government that forced banks to lower their lending standards. Loans were given to people who didn’t have credit; houses were sold to people who couldn’t afford the payments, and the result massive foreclosures. It was insane.”

The first half of this is incorrect, no banks were forced to make loans of this type. They did it voluntarily, because they had no intention of keeping the loans on their books. Instead, they sold the loans off to places like Goldman-Sachs, who then packaged them into Mortgage Backed Securities. The banks, investment companies, and rating agencies perpetrated an breathtaking fraud, for which nobody saw a day of jail time.

We need to talk about this lie from Andy Ngo and why from this point forward anybody who normalizes him as a reputable person should be ridiculed.
Andy gives us a brief video, in mid-encounter, and tells us Antifa attacked some people on a bus and hit them with a hammer.
In reality, a bus carrying hardcore fascist militia “American Guard” was passing some counter-protestors when it stopped at a light. After an exchange of taunts, members of American Guard opened their bus door and started attacking with hammers.
Yep, the hammers belonged to the fascist militia. And they opened up their bus door to attack people who weren’t doing anything violent.
Andy Ngo saw this attack by fascist militia thugs, and in reporting the skirmish, he painted the fascist thugs as pitiful victims of “ANTIFA VIOLENCE!!!” This what he does. This is all he does.
A bunch of lunatic fascist gangs are bussed into Portland. And then some thugs attack residents with a hammer. But when that same hammer quite rightly gets thrown back at them, people like Ngo now try to craft a fake story where the thugs become victims.
And it’s been very successful. Every deranged MAGA boomer in America now thinks Antifa attacked some poor man with hammers. And this bullshit propaganda campaign owes its success to every weak-willed media person who accepted Ngo as an honest actor.
In short, Andy Ngo creates fake horror movies to give cover for his fascist terrorist friends, and anyone who denies that should not be taken seriously.

The US military is no longer the primary force in Asia, and missiles from China’s rapidly improving military could overwhelm its bases in hours, according to a new report.

    […]

The report highlights areas where China’s military is making huge strides in comparison to the US and its Asian allies and partners. Chief among those is in missiles.

“China has deployed a formidable array of precision missiles and other counter-intervention systems to undercut America’s military primacy,” the report states. Those missiles number in the thousands, the report says.

Almost all US military installations in the Western Pacific, as well as those of its key partners and allies, “could be rendered useless by precision strikes in the opening hours of a conflict,” according to the report.

  55. Question… why do these Democrat politicians keep pandering and talking about what a blight on society this student debt is, and saying the taxpayers must pay it off and one-upping each other on free tuition? If it’s so destructive, stop offering the goddam loans.

There are otyehr more important links I have like India’s witch hunt for illegal immigrants but I may not have time to pt them all here and maybe I should wait until the next Breaking News and Off Topic Links post.

  68. No bites, eh? Well, if at first you don’t succeed ….

I think I’ll call this one “Love Potion 409”. Nigerians in Los Angeles combining the lonely hearts scam with the Spanish prisoner (409) scam to cheat money out of women worldwide.

David Koch, Billionaire Who Fueled Right-Wing Movement, Dies at 79

“Fueled Right-Wing Movement”. That’s scummy even by Sara Jeong standards.

  71. The very best people:

The New York Times reported President Donald Trump’s new White House Press Secretary has two arrests for driving under the influence and lost two jobs over alleged charges of plagiarism and cheating expenses.

The real question is this: Leaving aside the dissonance of a two-time DUI loser working at AAA, can a person still be called Press Secretary when she has had only one interview with a reporter and zero press briefings?

    Paul Montagu (a2342d)

  72. It sounds like Trump found the perfect person for the job, actually:

    Bad judgment, check
    No moral scruples, check
    Gross incompetence, check

    Welcome aboard the Trump train!

    Dave (c4bb53)

  73. Err, excuse me, sir, just exactly what kind of people do you think would be willing to work for Donald Trump? Moreover, just exactly what kind of people would Trump be willing to hire except those who can’t afford to tell him “Take this job and shove it, you orange-skinned pansy?”
