Debate (Mostly) Open Thread

Filed under: General — JVW @ 4:33 pm

[guest post by JVW]

I didn’t take the time to try and make some cutting remarks about last night’s candidates, so I’ll bypass that opportunity for tonight. But let’s set the stage with a few questions to ponder:

Does Joe Biden need to hit Kamala Harris with a zingy one-liner tonight, even if it isn’t quite a haymaker of a blow?

Will Kamala Harris say something tonight that her campaign will immediately be forced to “clarify” once the debate ends?

How in the world does Cory Booker get his campaign untracked without telling an embellished story which casts himself as selfless and heroic?

Who among the rest of the crowd — Michael Bennett, Julián Castro, Bill de Blasio, Tulsi Gabbard (ta-thump! ta-thump! goes my heart!), Kirsten Gillibrand, Jay Inslee, and Andrew Yang — will be making his or her final appearance on the debate stage tonight?

  1. If Biden has guts, he might hit Sen. Harris on her penchant for flip-flopping, but I somehow don’t see him going for it. I wonder if a craven phony like Booker, who is swimming in the same lane that Harris is, might go for it.

  2. If today goes like yesterday you won’t hear the first question till 8:23. Good for me, actually.

  3. This will be broadcast on Bloomberg radio, 1130 AM in New York and on several other stations around the country, and on Sirius radio and the audio is available in some ways too.

  4. Gosh, JVW, this might be the last time Tulsi makes an appearance. The left is mad at her for suing Google and aligning herself with Trump in fighting the “unchecked power” of the Big Tech. Worse yet, she made an appearance on Tucker Carlson’s show. My advice: Drink her in tonight for there might not be a tomorrow with her. Sympathies.

  7. Let me check my watch… yep…. Joey-Bee is another minute older.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  8. Who among these will call out the bulk of the candidates for being charlatans and fools?

Who among these would you prefer to Trump? (It IS a binary choice!) What is the chance the Democrats will nominate them? (Remember, Obama drove the GOP to Trump, Only God knows Trump will drive the Democrats to do).

    Kevin M (d9e49b)

  9. Like Tulsi? Send her money. But don’t expect me to weep for could-have-beens. 2016 was enough for me.

    Kevin M (d9e49b)

  10. Tulsi is wearing a lovely pants suit from the Tom Wolfe Collection…

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  11. But for me, I’ll pass. Medicaid-for-all is a showstopper. I paid through the nose for Medicare for 40 years, and I’ll be damned if some snot-nosed Millennial will get it for free.

    Kevin M (d9e49b)

  12. Yes, Biden is older, and so are you, DCSCA.

    And now you’re older still…

    …and now you’re older still…

  13. I think Joe Biden will be hit hard by Kamala and Booker (who embarrasses me with his desperation, which is right up there with Gillbrand…). And then I think everyone else will go after him to because they know it’s do or die and why no go for the top dog.

Anyway, apparently he’s ready to keep the punches from landing:

Biden campaign adviser Symone Sanders told Politico that her boss is prepared for another onslaught. “He’ll be ready on that debate stage to discuss his record. He’ll be ready to defend himself against attacks from those who mischaracterize his record,” she suggested. She also previewed one line of defense Biden might use if confronted with his record on criminal justice. The 1994 crime bill, said Sanders, came at a desperate time when “there were mayors across the country—black mayors, clergy folks—white and black people were calling out for change, and they were begging their elected officials to do something.” That may play well to an older cohort of voters baffled by modern wokeness, but it won’t save him from having to face another week of controversy in the press as his record is picked apart again.

  41. It’s better that way, JVW. I understand she’s a married lady.

  42. Poor Eric Garner’s mom: all of her personal time is probably taken up with meeting with ambitious Democrat politicians.

    JVW (54fd0b)

    nk (dbc370)

  122. Gotta hand it to CNN: their post-debate analysis is even more stupid than what the Democrat candidates said on stage (well, ok, Harris, Inslee, Booker, Gillibrand, and Castro excepted). One of those schmoes just opined that Biden lost a hypothetical debate with Elizabeth Warren tonight. Huh?

The 1994 crime bill, said Sanders, came at a desperate time when “there were mayors across the country—black mayors, clergy folks—white and black people were calling out for change,

  138. I didn’t like the way everybody accepted that Eric Garner was killed by a policeman. If so, who killed his daughter, Erica Garner, who died of exactly the same thing. And there was also an allusion by one candidate (though not by name) to Trayvon Martin.

Trayvon Martin attacked George Zimmerman! There should be no doubt about that.

The question is why. Most likely, I speculated, because he took GZ for a Blood who was going to call other members of his gang to kill what he thought was a Crip. I don’t think TM was on some kind of drug.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/-30-

-30- has been traditionally used by journalists in North America to indicate the end of a story. It is commonly found at the end of a press release. There are many theories about how the usage came into being,[1][2] e.g. from that number’s use in the 92 Code of telegraphic shorthand to signify the end of a transmission in the American Civil War era.[3] It was included in the Associated Press Phillips Code of abbreviations and short markings for common use. It was commonly used when writing on deadline and sending bits at a time to be typeset, as a necessary way to indicate the end of the article.[4]

  169. Someone better tell that SOB Jim Geraghty that I saw her first:

One of the more dramatic moments in the second hour came when Tulsi Gabbard went after Harris hard on the less flattering parts of her record as prosecutor: “She put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana . . . When you were in a position to impact these people’s lives you did not and worse yet in the case of those on death row, innocent people, you actually blocked evidence that would have freed them, until you were forced to do that, and the people who suffered under your reign as prosecutor, you owe them an apology.” Brutal. Those of us who studied her prosecutorial record early know there is more controversy, but all of this is probably news to a lot of the Democrats watching at home. Gabbard makes a much more effective attack dog against Harris than Biden did. You have to wonder if Biden gets the nomination whether Gabbard would be on the running mate list. (Then again, Gabbard looks so much younger than a traditional presidential candidate. She’s 38 but looks like she’s in her twenties.)

  175. But as it is, it’s like going up against the French and your army is the Czechoslovakians.

The Czechs kinda got sold down the river by … the French.

But they performed an amazing military feat during WWI and the ensuing Russian Civil War, though, fighting their way from PoW camps in the Ukraine all the way across Siberia on the trans-Siberian railroad, capturing all the major cities along the way, defeating the Germans, Bolsheviks and Japanese, and almost saving the Czar and his family from execution. They were eventually sea-lifted out of Vladivostok and back to Europe.

The Czech army in 1938 would have been no push-over, and their tanks were better than many of the Germans’ at the time (the Germans used captured Czech tanks two years later in their conquest of France, which was poetic justice…).

As an aside – somebody on a World War II history forum I was reading asked a really interesting question the other day: suppose there was a battle between a Vichy French army and a Free French army; who would surrender first?

“Political discourse nowadays is enough to depress anyone, and the media don’t help by ignoring good economic news. But buck up, Americans: Worker wages are growing much faster than previously reported.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) on Tuesday published its annual revisions to personal income data, and the surprise was the huge jump in disposable income and employee compensation.

The revisions show that employee compensation rose 4.5% in 2017 and 5% in 2018—some $4.4 billion and $87.1 billion more than previously reported. The trend has continued into 2019, with compensation increasing $378 billion or 3.4% in the first six months alone. Wages and salaries were revised upward to 5.3% from 3.6% in May year over year. And in June wages and salaries grew at an annual rate of 5.5%, which is a rocking 4.1% after adjusting for inflation. . . .

The BEA also revised overall personal income up by 1.7% for 2017 and 2018 and transfer receipts down 0.7%. In sum, Americans are earning more and relying less on government. Personal savings estimates were also increased by $217 billion for the last two years and are now $1.3 trillion, which means Americans are socking away more of their earnings.

The personal savings rate was revised upward to 8.1% from 6.1% in May, which is much higher than the roughly 5% before the last two recessions. This should make the current economic expansion more durable since consumption isn’t being pumped up largely by increased household debt. Instead consumer spending has increased as wage growth has accelerated amid a tight labor market.

Recall how liberals blamed “secular stagnation” as the reason worker incomes weren’t growing faster during the latter years of Barack Obama’s Presidency. Yet employee compensation has increased by $150 billion more in the first six months of 2019 than all of 2016. Compensation increased 42% more during the first two years of the Trump Presidency than in 2015 and 2016. This refutes the claim by liberals that the economy has merely continued on the same trajectory since 2017 as it was before.

The economy barely skirted recession in the final Obama years, and economic policy changed in 2017. Deregulation has unleashed repressed animal spirits, especially in energy. Tax reform has also spurred business investment in new facilities and equipment, which over time should translate into higher worker productivity and wages.”

  203. Haha, yeah, imagine being involved in a pointless conflict for 16 years in a row.

Comparisons of our current situation to Indochina or Algeria are completely dishonest.

Since the start of 2015, we have suffered 55 KIA in Afghanistan, an average rate of exactly 1 per month.

We could sustain that rate of casualties for almost 250 years and still come out ahead on American lives if we prevent *one* 9/11-size terror attack in that time.

From what I can determine, there are about 14,000 US troops in Afghanistan. If so, the rate of 12 KIA per year corresponds to 86 deaths per 100,000 troops per year. The murder rate in St. Louis is only slightly less (66 per 100,000). The murder rate in East St.Louis (~100 per 100,000) is actually higher than the death rate of our troops in Afghanistan.

The situation there is far from perfect, and every servicemember who loses their life or comes home wounded is a terrible price to pay.

But it could get a lot worse, and certainly will if we pull out. A less than perfect, but stable, situation is better than a chaotic and catastrophic one.

By the way there is a new audio recording of saint ronnie reagan calling black people from africa monkeys.

One of the Nixon tapes, from October 1971, when the substitution of Mainland China for Taiwan to hold the United Natons seat had just been approved. Reagan called Nixon to complain. Nixon had had George HW Bush, who wa his Ambassador to the United Nations lobby for it. Reagan was complaining that a number of African diplomats had not jst voted for it, but had celebrated that. And he said “those monkeys”

He said they didn’t used to have shoes up until they got to the United States or something like that.

When Nixon repeated that “observation” to Bebe Rebozo, he changed the word “monkeys” to “cannibals” (probably because he didn’t want to seem to be endorsing, even in private, the theory of evolution)

But Bebe Rebozo came right back at him with something about tails and trees. Nixon had also mentioned the idea they were new to shoes.

As Norah O’Donnell mentioned on the CBS Evening News yesterday, this would have been shocking if it had come out at that time, in 1971.

Apparently Biden was saying to text joe at 30330. Which is some way to get his campaign to text you and ask for money. Another Biden gaffe.

I read in the New York Post column by Michael Goodwin what it was supposed to be:

(according to what his campaign’s Twitter account has)

    Text JOIN to 30330

Text, not go to (it’s not a website) and JOIN not JOE

You’d think maybe he’d try it out once, just in order to see that it worked; just in order to help his memory.

People fed it to him without explaining to him what it was! Or, he had no curiosity, or he was too embarassed to say he didn’t understand and please do this again. And again. And again.

  220. 210. It was the Tanzanian delegation to the United Nations (not a number of different African countries, as Ronald Reagan thought) that was shown in television dancing in the General Assembly after the United Nations had voted to give Chna;s seat to Peking. And what Reagan said about shoes was “They;re still uncomfortable wearing shoes” (well if that’s the case, maybe there;s areason)

The thing was Tanzania was, Tanzania (the result of the annexation of Zanzibar by Tanganyika) was pretty much a dictatorship at that time, ruled by Julius Nyerere. And he evidently ahd develped pretty close ties with Red China. (probably because it helped to maintain his dictatorship – I wouldn’t suspect any other reason.)

    Proof:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_Nyerere

Although his vision of socialism differed from that promoted by Marxism–Leninism, Tanzania developed close links with Mao Zedong’s Marxist–governed China.

Of course, this was politics, not ignorance, and Reagan was too naive to realize this. Maybe Nixon too,

Nixon repeated what Reagan had said, not to Bebe Rebozo, but to Secretay of State William P. Rogers, only he changed “monkeys” to “cannibals” and said that reagan said “they weren’t even wearing shoes” which I don’t know if it is true, but maybe Nixon saw it on television also, and maybe they took off their shoes to dance. He quoted Reagan as saying it: “and here the United States is going to submit its fate to that” and so forth and so on. The last six words from Nixon.

Incidently I read a letter in the Daily News yesterday that said anyone having children in the back seat of a car in a car eat should take off their left show and put it in the back – that way they won’t forget ther children. That sounds more effective than a handbag or a cell phone.)

The remark about tails and trees was made by Bebe Rebozo in a separate conversation. Rebozo said it “proves how they ought to be still hanging from the trees by their tails.”

These people didn’t give them any credit at all for being corrupt.

No, it would NOT have been SHOCKING in 1971. The media was full of things making fun of Africans. And most people didn’t appreciate these African countries that we were providing aid for, and had worked so hard to set free from Colonial Rule, siding with Mao and CELEBRATING It. Nixon had not yet gone to China, we were still fighting the Vietnam War, and we’d only stopped killing Chicoms in Korea in 1953.

BTW, you’ll notice that Nixon repeats what Reagan said, but he never agrees with it. That’s because Nixon was ALWAYS positioning himself as the “Moderate” between the squishy Liberals and the “Crazy” Right-wingers. And as the Center moved left over his life-time, Nixon moved Left.

No, it would NOT have been SHOCKING in 1971. The media was full of things making fun of Africans.

No, not really and certainly not in that way. It wouldn’t even have passed muster in the 1950s in most of the country.

Or even the 1930s. That’s how far back they ahd to go to find a Kate Smith song or two. Early 1930s basically, and a song sung later that could be taken in more than one way.

And most people didn’t appreciate these African countries that we were providing aid for, and had worked so hard to set free from Colonial Rule, siding with Mao and CELEBRATING It.

First of all, it was actually apaprently just one country: Tanzania. And that’s not the same thing as calling their delegates monkeys.

Reagan did not give them credit for being under orders, or their goverment corrupt and under Chinese influence, and probably also getting the kind of aid from Mao’s China that the United States would never give. We’d never train their secret police – or stuff like that which I would suspect China did. Never, ever, ever.

In some countries the United States might work with bad people, when their opponents were worse, or considered worse, but they’d never train them to be bad. That’s why the Soviet Union, and sometimes Red China, had some success in getting governments to favor them.

Nixon had yet gone to China,

Nixon had announced, earlier that year, on July 15 1971 that he would visit Communist China.

I was under the impression that he favored Mainland China taking over the United Nations seat of China, but the newspapers today are saying no. GHWB seemed happy with it, though, I remember.

BTW, you’ll notice that Nixon repeats what Reagan said, but he never agrees with it.

He also altered it. Changed “monkeys” to the more acceptable “cannibals” and said Reagan said that they weren’t wearing shoes rather than that they were unconfortable in them.

Cannibalism is cultural and cannot be said to be genetic. The only thing is, I’m not sure where it was tha cannibals were supposed to be eating missionaries at one time. Maybe that was put in Africa in people;’s minds, even though it didn’t happen there.

    It happened in New Guinea:
