Outrage: Colts Linebacker Was Killed by Twice-Deported Illegal Immigrant

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 9:00 am

For years, I collected stories of preventable killings by illegal immigrants, under the tag Deport the Criminals First. My last post under that tag was about the killing of Kate Steinle in June 2015. Although I stopped writing about the issue, the killings keep happening. The latest example occurred this weekend, ending the life of an NFL player and his companion. CNN:

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson and another man were struck and killed in a suspected drunken driving accident early Sunday morning.

Indiana State Police say the man they believe hit them is an undocumented immigrant who has been deported twice.

. . . .

Police identified the driver of the F-150 as Manuel Orrego-Savala. Police said he gave them an alias at the scene — Alex Cabrera Gonsales — and attempted to flee on foot. He was taken to the Marion County Jail, accused of driving without a license and on suspicion of intoxicated driving.

Detectives said Orrego-Savala is a citizen of Guatemala who is in the United States illegally and was deported twice, in 2007 and 2009. They’re working with US immigration officials, who have placed a hold on Orrego-Savala.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement released a statement late Monday saying Orrego-Savala was previously convicted of driving under the influence in Redwood City, California, in 2005. He has other “misdemeanor criminal convictions and arrests in California and Indiana,” the ICE statement said.

Stories like this outrage people not because illegal immigrants are worse criminals than citizens — they’re not — but because they are not supposed to be in the country to begin with.

For example, the reason that the killing of Kate Steinle was such an outrage was because it was totally preventable. Had San Francisco officials simply returned her killer to the custody of ICE (which had been preparing to deport him), rather than kicking him loose onto their streets, that beautiful young woman would be alive today. Similarly, if we had any semblance of border protection, maybe Edwin Jackson and Jeffrey Monroe would still be alive.

I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir here, but this all illustrates the need for real border security. The fact that this is obvious does not make it less true. It’s a security issue for multiple reasons, not the least of which is that when we fail, Americans die as a direct result.

  5. If you don’t already, maybe you should consider supporting President Trump’s efforts to build the border wall. Or does your low opinion of Trump preclude associating yourself, even tangentially, with one of his pet initiatives?

  6. 5, is this to imply that this could be a “greenlight”, a long drawn out road rage incident, or that the deceased football player (and/or the uber driver) may have been what is called “ridin’ dirty” (i.e. a transaction gone bad)?

  9. Nice post, Patterico, especially you noting that the often heard argument that illegals aren’t any more likely to commit crimes has zero relevance to immigration policy. If we could deport all repeat drunk drivers, regardless of resident status, I would favor that. We can’t, so we deport those we can.

  10. No, silly maybe someone used Dollar Store fake toy bills behind the first couple of Benjamins in an envelope. A Red Lincoln will stand out in the crowd on top of that and make it easier for the hitman to spot the quarry.

If my GoogleMap mien and knowledge of Paisa hoods is on point, its possible the pickup driver was either intending to exit at Holt Road or was merging from the Holt Road (which is the closest interchange to the Washington Street corridor in West Indianapolis, something akin to Buford Hwy in Gwinnett Co. GA or Nolensville Rd in Nashville). The car carrying Jackson might have been stopped in the shoulder rather close to either the off- or on- ramp, which covers Ropelight’s point of being focused on a single point.

  12. Trump should pick the five most vociferous sanctuary cities and announce that he will absolutely respect their policy and suspend all ICE operations in those cities. That no illegal alien inside those cities’ boundaries will be detained or deported, and that any local law enforcement who tries to pull an Arpaio will be prosecuted for civil rights violations. I’m thinking Malibu, Berkeley, and San Francisco for sure. Honolulu for catch and release — just fly them there and let them loose. Which other(s)?

  13. I have heard, not sure I believe it, that if an immigration office gives an illegal a deport post haste order, the “deported” box is checked whether or not the guy actually leaves.
    Anybody know about this?

  14. But what do statistics say about regular citizens living here compared to illegal immigrants (per capita) getting DUI’s? If the percentage is considerably lower for the immigrants, then I have no problem with it. In that respect, they would be better / more responsible than we are. An isolated case here and there can always be made for political gain, but it’s biased, not smart.

    Tillman (a95660)

  15. Ten American citizens are shooting at you. What kind of a bigot are you not to want the illegal alien to be the eleventh? Racist!

    nk (dbc370)

  16. Mr. Tillman, does putting an illegal alien drunk driver on the highway along with American citizen drunk drivers reduce or increase the number of drunk drivers and, statistically speaking, reduce or increase the chances that a drunk driver will run into you?

    nk (dbc370)

  17. Hey nk-#16, stop talking about Chicago proper (and half the hispanic perps are PRs you cant do anything about), though jacking your car would seem to be more the crime du jour now.

  27. The Mexican government’s abetting of this influx could be considered a hostile act. Any renegotiation of NAFTA needs to change their behavior. And if we have to take in those that are here now, Mexico needs to reciprocate in some way. The restrictions on American ownership and other rights within Mexico have to end, for starters.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  31. Kevin M, you’re missing the point. If, and I will emphasize “if” since I don’t know, they are more responsible drivers than we are when it comes to not getting DUIs, then how can we complain about that? We’re worse than they are. If you don’t want them here, fine, then say that. But don’t use that particular thing as an excuse.

    Tillman (a95660)

  32. It doesn’t matter what kind of driver they are they are illegal and shouldn’t be here. Every American they kill or injure would not have been killed or injured if they weren’t here. Whether the victims are Republican or democrat. That really not hard logic to grasp.

    Rev.Hoagie (6bbda7)

  33. I don’t think they are more responsible drivers in any respect.

There’s an auto auction in Nashville every Thursday. Almost anytime that afternoon or night I come across caravans of crummy cars towing two more even crummy cars “In Tow” headed west. Usually with Chihuahua plates on the front cars. Almost always three three car rigs.

    Pinandpuller (16b0b5)

  34. It’s a horrible, horrible thing to have happen, but for Heaven’s sake, don’t pull over on the shoulder of the Interstate at 4:00 am so that someone can barf out the window; just let them barf in your damn car and clean it up the next day. I’ll bet that most drunks who do that in your car usually feel remorse and kick you some extra bucks anyway.

I’m still not convinced that the border wall will be that effective. My guess is that Orrego-Salava spent the last years that he was here (after sneaking back over from his exile for a second time) working in some capacity or other. Since he initially gave authorities a fake name it seems likely that he worked with a phony ID and social security number. I think that cracking down on employers of illegal immigrants, as well as requiring stricter verification of immigrant workers (fingerprints, etc.) is a much better way of spending money than building the wall. But I do admit that a future Democrat administration and Congress can very easily weaken the eVerify employer requirements as well.

    JVW (dadb0c)

  35. Pin, are the cars in tow all of the same model year (make/model might vary)? There some asinine law that limits American car imports to a particular model year ten years ago (e.g. this is the year to bbring in a 2008).

    urbanleftbehind (5eecdb)

  36. Tillman, the days are over when the “Whatever Crisis!!!” suddenly appeared with a Republican president meme carries any weight whatsoever.

    Patricia (3363ec)

  37. I don’t think they are more responsible drivers in any respect.

I kind of doubt it too. Several years ago there was a bit of a controversy because law enforcement in the Los Angeles area was being told not to cite illegal immigrant drivers for minor traffic violations (and, allegedly, some major ones) because by law their cars would be impounded since they were driving without a license. So that artificially lowered the number of citations given to the illegal immigrant community. When the city/county of Los Angeles announced they would no longer automatically impound automobiles, one of the reasons is because they admitted that they were unfairly letting driving infractions go unpunished by that community.

    JVW (dadb0c)

  38. The border areas are pretty desolute and rough, JVW, at least in Texas. Hikers did in Big Bend every month, and they go for fun with supplies, backup, and after registering with the Park rangers. Every barrier we raise will make it that much harder to come and will discourage some people from trying. Many die trying and it’s better for us and for them if they focus on coming legally.

    DRJ (15874d)

  39. Hikers die, not did.

    DRJ (15874d)

  40. As much as the Bush Administration was mocked for the idea of a” virtual wall” with security cameras and sensor beams and drones and all that, I think that for large parts of New Mexico and Arizona that is way more cost-effective and sensible than expecting to build a wall. But, as I said earlier, ultimately our success in enforcing immigration laws depends upon the willingness of our bureaucratic and political class to do so, and that’s where we’re ultimately lacking.

You may cross the border dozens of times on a river trip down the Rio Grande and not even know it. The international border technically is defined as the center of the deepest channel of the river, and running rapids takes you on the Mexican side of this channel as a matter of course. This is not illegal, but landing on the Mexican side of the river can earn you fines and even jail time.

  45. It should have been schumer or schiff for brains that needed tire tracks on their backs. When will these illegals start running over the lefties?

  46. NBC had a report one night mocking Trump’s increased border enforcement because every other car coming through the checkpoint had drugs. So Trump’s not stopping drugs!!

But isn’t it better to catch them at one checkpoint rather than patrolling the entire border??

    Patricia (3363ec)

  47. I think the Texas-New Mexico-Arizona borders are much longer and more porous than California’s, and there aren’t as many checkpoints. It makes sense to me to enhance border checkpoint security but it’s pretty strong already.

    DRJ (15874d)

  48. IOW it isn’t a choice of border vs checkpoint. They are crossing everywhere.

    DRJ (15874d)

  49. More Trumpenfuhrer.

Well, Obama fired no one over the OPM data breach, which was FAR worse as it let loose answers to questions like “Have you ever done drugs? When and how much?” or “List all your relationships over the past 7 years.”

  50. they are more responsible drivers than we are when it comes to not getting DUIs, then how can we complain about that?

And you miss mine. They aren’t supposed to BE HERE. They are uninvited squatters. So, even if they are the most perfectest drivers in the world, they still clog up the roads. When they ALSO drive drink they are wrong-squared.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  51. But I do admit that a future Democrat administration and Congress can very easily weaken the eVerify employer requirements as well.

Or a future Republican one. No politician wants to see employers (read: donors) cracked down on. In some states, the government colludes with them. If they’re Republicans they’re just more circumspect.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  52. But, as I said earlier, ultimately our success in enforcing immigration laws depends upon the willingness of our bureaucratic and political class to do so, and that’s where we’re ultimately lacking.

Consider that the last administration let people in after catching them crossing. Gave them help in adjusting, too, and lawyers to fight their case. There is no amount of border security that will help if the government is going to turn a blind eye.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  53. it’s better for us and for them if they focus on coming legally.

That is reasonable only if they think they have a reasonable chance of coming here legally. Which under every Congress and Potus, Dem or GOP, they haven’t had for a long time.

I think the Wall at least in its Trumpian version, is a boondoggle. Unless it is extended into the Pacific and the Gulf to impede smuggling by boat….

I understand the need for border security. But to get that, you need to cut down on people wanting to get here illegally. To do that you need to liberalize immigration rules, so that people think (even if the reality is not actually so) trying to come here legally is the better choice.

I’ve said this before: the best way to stop illegal immigration is to increase the possibility of legal immigration. People here disagree with me, sometimes vehemently. To me it’s such an obvious point I just have to scratch my head in disbelief when they do.

    Kishnevi (f60e29)

  54. BTW, I assume everyone here has seen the thing about ICE wanting the ability, in the name of enforcement, to track every license plate in the US on a round the clock basis.

  55. “Last week, Jimmy Kimmel, the late-night talk show host with a terminal case of Trump Derangement Syndrome, wanted to host a segment with voters who oppose DACA. To find willing guests, ABC casting had reached out to me and fellow Trump supporters to appear on the show. At first, I was reluctant. Kimmel uses every shame-inducing prop imaginable to attack President Trump and conservatives in general. I reached out to a friend and fellow activist, Robin Hvidston, director of We the People Rising, for advice. She encouraged me to go with her and four others: Chanell Temple, Wes Parker, Lorie Masonas, and Celeste Grieg. All of us know each in other conservative circles throughout Southern California.

After a brief “rehearsal,” we finally met Jimmy Kimmel who interviewed each of us about the program. I told him that nearly 50% of DACA recipients are fraudulent, and illegals commit proportionally more crime than Americans. He finished our brief interview with: “I want you to meet somebody.”

After the interviews, our team waited in the Green Room. I pondered who Kimmel was going to have us meet. “He’s going to present a child who is in this country illegally,” I imagined. Lo and Behold, Kimmel introduced us to Esmeralda, a DACA recipient brought into this country by her law-breaking illegal parents. She was seated with a baby girl in her lap. Kimmel staged the most compassionate scenario, hoping to shame us into silence.

Immediately, I showed the mother and child my shirt, which featured the profile of young Ruben Morfin, an all-American 13-year old boy executed by an illegal alien. “He had dreams, too,” I quickly shared before Kimmel shushed me.
He would attempt to silence me an unprecedented five times. Little did Little Kimmel realize, however, but all of us were seasoned activists trained in how to deal with fawning, guilt-trip inducing liberal media hacks.

Right away, I opened up about our need to put Americans first, including our homeless veterans and foster children. “OK, Arthur, that’s enough.” And why couldn’t I finish? “Because this is my show!” Kimmel fired back. He would say that three more times. What a dictator! I mentioned general statistics about illegals committing a higher rate of crimes that native-born citizens. “OK Sean Hannity, give it a rest,” Kimmel mocked me. “I don’t watch Hannity,” I countered. Other people in our group were shocked to see how triggered the comic had become….

The piece de resistance occurred when Kimmel tried one more time to silence me. Bursting through all of Kimmel’s attempts to shame us, Lorie reminded the audience about the needs of American citizens. In rude yet repeated fashion, Kimmel championed Esmeralda but talked over Lorie, and I finally calmly asked: “Jimmy, why won’t you let this Latina for Trump speak? You keep interrupting her. Is it because she has darker skin than you?”

With that, Kimmel completely lost it and shouted at me: “Shut up, you a—hole!”

  59. Although they are not as bad as the SS, you can make comparisons. They go around rounding up people they consider are illegal immigrants, albeit majority are but some have been green carded citizens. They also hold no place sacred as they’ve gone to lie-and-wait outside churches, stormed into mosques, gone into hospitals, etc to get people on the list of Trump America’s Most Wanted Immigrants to kick out. They claim they are only going after criminal element, but have grabbed many who have not committed crimes except for being brought here as children. They even wait outside Immigration and Naturalization Services for immigrants going for their green cards.

President Obama deported one of the highest number of illegal immigrants. Yet, ICE had boundaries they could not cross, such as churches, mosques, hospitals, etc under the President Obama administration but those boundaries have been destroyed under the Trump leadership.
