Trump, Russia And A Barrel Of Media Monkeys

Filed under: General — Dana @ 6:33 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Because the madness that was 2016 wasn’t enough:

Classified documents presented last week to President Obama and President-elect Trump included allegations that Russian operatives claim to have compromising personal and financial information about Mr. Trump, multiple US officials with direct knowledge of the briefings tell CNN.

The allegations were presented in a two-page synopsis that was appended to a report on Russian interference in the 2016 election. The allegations came, in part, from memos compiled by a former British intelligence operative, whose past work US intelligence officials consider credible. The FBI is investigating the credibility and accuracy of these allegations, which are based primarily on information from Russian sources, but has not confirmed many essential details in the memos about Mr. Trump.

These senior intelligence officials also included the synopsis to demonstrate that Russia had compiled information potentially harmful to both political parties, but only released information damaging to Hillary Clinton and Democrats. This synopsis was not an official part of the report from the intelligence community case about Russian hacks, but some officials said it augmented the evidence that Moscow intended to harm Clinton’s candidacy and help Trump’s, several officials with knowledge of the briefings tell CNN.

The two-page synopsis also included allegations that there was a continuing exchange of information during the campaign between Trump surrogates and intermediaries for the Russian government, according to two national security officials.

Important note:

CNN has reviewed a 35-page compilation of the memos, from which the two-page synopsis was drawn. The memos originated as opposition research, first commissioned by anti-Trump Republicans, and later by Democrats. At this point, CNN is not reporting on details of the memos, as it has not independently corroborated the specific allegations. But, in preparing this story, CNN has spoken to multiple high ranking intelligence, administration, congressional and law enforcement officials, as well as foreign officials and others in the private sector with direct knowledge of the memos.

Allahpundit, whose full analysis you should read, reminds readers about a report in Mother Jones last October which included claims that they had heard that there “was an established exchange of information between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin of mutual benefit.”

“Russian regime has been cultivating, supporting and assisting TRUMP for at least 5 years. Aim, endorsed by PUTIN, has been to encourage splits and divisions in western alliance.” It maintained that Trump “and his inner circle have accepted a regular flow of intelligence from the Kremlin, including on his Democratic and other political rivals.” It claimed that Russian intelligence had “compromised” Trump during his visits to Moscow and could “blackmail him.” It also reported that Russian intelligence had compiled a dossier on Hillary Clinton based on “bugged conversations she had on various visits to Russia and intercepted phone calls.”

Caution: While CNN, and other major media outlets opted not to publish the full report because it hasn’t been verified and substantiated, BuzzFeed News, always a paragon of accurate and reliable reporting, decided to run the whole enchilada anyway. It should also be noted, and amusingly so, that BuzzFeed News acknowledges that the allegations made in the report they published have not been confirmed and that the report contains errors. Professional Journalism 2017: Always maintaining high standards!

To which Trump responded:

trump

And, coincidentally:

trump2

2017 is going to be a very long year indeed.

P.S. Individuals named in the report are already vehemently pushing back.

I’ve been reading the 4chan threads on this. I find it quite plausible that it did indeed originate in 4chan, as a hoax.

But, if it’s a 4chan (or any other) hoax, it’s not a scandal, right? Wrong! It’s very much a scandal, a massive one, if a hoax really did make its way into an intel report! That would, at best, be incompetence on a truly magnificent scale – and is likely politically driven, which makes it in this case criminal, too.

“The memos originated as opposition research, first commissioned by anti-Trump Republicans, and later by Democrats.”

Our intelligence agencies are in oppo research now against domestic candidates?

    OK then.

    Gabriel Hanna (678b43)

  37. From that pro-Trump shill David French at that pro-trump rag National Review:

We don’t know if any of the claims are true. The intelligence community is at least taking them seriously enough to brief Trump. Oh, and “multiple US officials with direct knowledge of the briefings” are leaking like a sieve to CNN.

This is all disturbing. From the leaks, to the Buzzfeed document dump, to the substance of the allegations themselves. Are there “officials” who hate Trump so much that they’re willing to leak information that they know will lead to widespread public fear that the president-elect is compromised by a hostile foreign power? If so, that’s extraordinary. Or, just as extraordinary, are there officials who are so concerned by Trump’s potential ties to Russia that they’re willing to risk a public firestorm to jump-start an investigation? And yes, there are members of the media who hate Trump so much that they’re willing to print the wildest possible rumors, repeat them across the web, and then mock him relentlessly based on claims that can likely never be properly investigated, much less proven.

That our intelligence agencies are willing to involve themselves in politics like this ought to be the thing we are talking about. It’s too bad it took the election of Donald Trump to expose it, because this isn’t going to end well for anyone.

    Gabriel Hanna (678b43)

  38. @narcisco, elissa, nk, pinandpuller:

I read 4chan so you won’t have to. (For a while I was thinking the commentariat here was getting pretty unhealthy, but 4chan has readjusted my perspective on that.)

They’re arguing about whether or not it had anything to do with any of them. One of them did send something to Rick Wilson about a sextape, but they’re arguing over whether this is the “shower” story or not. The “shower” story is the only part they think might have come from any of them.

But guess what — that doesn’t change the fact Hillary only won 20 states.
America rejected a Barack third term.

It was almost certainly not “commisisoned by” but “sold to” and it wasn’t anti-Trump Republicans who came up with this, any more than they came with some of the other things against trump, or taht Trump invented the Cruz coonnection to the JFK assassination.

People who wanted Clinton to be president is a more likely actual sponser.

This is the same crowd of embedded political operatives in the FBI who couldn’t see anything of note in Fast and Furious: who looked at the Washington voting scandal in the Rossi nonelection a decade ago and determined there was nothing there; who looked at Hillary! and excused her; who bought into the “yellow rain” fabrication brought to them by McCain; who were indifferent to weaponizing the IRS to deny 1st Amendment freedoms to conservatives; and so on. Tweets, not press conference, I guess. Not my fault, I get my information from the media.

He was asked about that at his press conference, tpp. It was the first one of a barrage of questions asked by Major Garrett. Trump, like so many people answered the last one first, but he finally managed to get his question in. Trump didn’t explain what was similiar about this accusation.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/11/us/politics/trump-press-conference-transcript.html

President-elect, I have a question about the Supreme Court and border security. But I also wanted to ask you about something you said on Twitter this morning. Are we living in Nazi Germany? What were you driving at there? Do you have a problem with the intelligence community?

… QUESTION: The tweet that you had this morning about are we living in Nazi Germany, what were you driving at there? What are you trying to tell the American public?

TRUMP: I think it was disgraceful — disgraceful that the intelligence agencies allowed any information that turned out to be so false and fake out. I think it’s a disgrace, and I say that — and I say that, and that’s something that Nazi Germany would have done and did do. I think it’s a disgrace that information that was false and fake and never happened got released to the public.

As far as Buzzfeed, which is a failing pile of garbage, writing it, I think they’re going to suffer the consequences. They already are. And as far as CNN going out of their way to build it up — and by the way, we just found out I was coming down. Michael Cohen — I was being — Michael Cohen is a very talented lawyer. He’s a good lawyer in my firm. It was just reported that it wasn’t this Michael Cohen they we’re talking about. So all night long it’s Michael Cohen.

I said, “I want to see your passport.” He brings his passport to my office. I say, hey, wait a minute. He didn’t leave the country. He wasn’t out of the country. They had Michael Cohen of the Trump Organization was in Prague. It turned out to be a different Michael Cohen. It’s a disgrace what took place. It’s a disgrace and I think they ought to apologize to start with Michael Cohen.

It looks like he didn’t quite have that example with what the Nazis did to some high ranking members of the German military in mind. Maybe he had the slanders the Nazis published in mind.

See my post above. tl; dr 4chan is not sure if one of theirs planted it or not.

  95. tl; dr?

  96. The golden shower story was that Trump hired some hookers to pee on the bed Obama slept on in the presidential suite of the Ritz Carlton in Moscow while there in 2013 for a Miss Universe pagent.

In 2013 the President attended a G-20 summit meeting at Constantine Palace in St. Petersburg Russia. Not Moscow.

Getting past peeing on a bed as a revenge which is insane, Trump carrying a grudge about if Obama embarrassed him, maybe with the birth certificate thing, but getting the hotel wrong, in the wrong city?

This reminds me of the first Superman movie with Christopher Reeves. You can make the argument that Superman swooping down to save Lois Lane inches from being splattered on the sidewalk defys the laws of motion, that Lois in the real world would have hit the “arms of steel” at 300 MPH and been cut into three even pieces,
But first you have to deal with there’s NO SUCH THING as Superman!!!

It’s a comic book you dork.

    “too long, didn’t read”

It’s used for two purposes: to denigrate someone else’s comment that they worked hard on, or to indicate that you are about to present a summary of something longer that you don’t want to repeat at this time.

  98. I really cannot recommend that anyone go to 4chan and see for themselves. One does not simply walk in to 4chan.

  99. MD @ 80. I heard

First: That the airport shooter might have gone visited Islamist web sites several yeasr ago used a fake name.

Second: That there’s picture of him wearing an “Islamic scarf” And another pointing a finger in a way that Islamic terrorists do. (but they didn’t know what it meant. Maybe he was imitating them)

And also that the FBI had retrived his laptop from an Alaskan pawn shop/

He had after all, told the FBI in Anchorage that he thought the CIA was forcing him to watch Islamist videos. so it would all be the same thing: caving in to voices in his head.

Now it’s said that he converted to Islam? The Judicial Watch report doesn’t actually back taht up. It says that he used a jihadist name, not that he eer formally changed it or joined in anything Islamic. And it couldn’t be before he joine dthe army because he joined the army for the first time in 2007.

  100. Isn’t 4chan also the origin of Pizzagate? Or rather an attempt to interpret the Podesta e-mails as if they were something from Nostradamus and make them mean something else?

    Sammy Finkelman (dcc9ca)

  101. @Sammy: 4chan is like here, and most other places on the internet, but cranked up to 11. There are pro- and anti-Trump factions there. There are lots of people who just like to troll in both factions, but the shenanigans they get up to tend to have different targets.

    Gabriel Hanna (64d4e1)

  102. 103. 4chan then, can mean anybody, except that it is untraceable.

    Sammy Finkelman (643dcd)

  103. @Sammy: 4chan then, can mean anybody, except that it is untraceable.

Yeah, there is no one who speaks for that group, and no coherent direction.

  104. The whole idea that Putin was against hillary since 2011 (and now pro-Trump too, since 2011! – do they take us all for fools?) is obvious disinformation, probably intended to hide what this si all abouty.

Hillary was on friendly terms with Putin past 2011.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/24/us/cash-flowed-to-clinton-foundation-as-russians-pressed-for-control-of-uranium-company.html

I think the big break came with the Euromaiden Revolution in Ukraine (Tillerson still calls “the Ukraine”) in February 2014. Where Victoria Nuland played a big role. Putin thought Victoria Nuland was one of Hillary’s women, so everything taht Nuland wanted, Putin thought Hillary wanted.

Actually she was not one of Hillary’s women or she would not have remained in the State Department long after Hillary left. But Putin may not uncerstand that.

This can’t have anything to do with Hillary’s pro-forma criticism of the Russian Parliamentary elections in 2011. Something is wrong at the intelligence agencies for even saying that.

  105. 105. 4chan then, is just a way for anyone to start the ball rolling in a completely denianable way.

    Sammy Finkelman (643dcd)

  106. @Sammy:4chan then, is just a way for anyone to start the ball rolling in a completely denianable way.

It is every caricature of the internet, consciously emulated, how about that? The anonymity, the lack of norms, etc.

    Gabriel Hanna (64d4e1)

  107. Bob,
    I have no idea.
I’ve said before that we ought not to believe anything anyone says anymore until they have been interrogated by Jack Bauer,
Or at least cross examined by our host under oath.

If one can believe Plame was undercover at the time and compromised by somebody related to Bush, that Nidal perpetrated work place violence, and that HRC did nothing worth prosecuting,
Then one can believe who knows what.

Judicial Watch in general has been one of the groups that have kept us from full Orwell, so I do give them more credit than I would anyone else
