Hillary Email Leaks: Paid Speech Excerpts and Possible Illegal Coordination

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 4:21 pm

Let’s talk a little bit about the Wikileaks releases on Hillary yesterday — you know, the stuff that the Trump p***y-grabbing video was designed to obscure.

First, we have this email titled “HRC Paid Speeches.” It’s worth reading the whole thing, as someone in the Hillary camp was kind enough to identify all of the problematic passages from her paid speeches and assemble them in one place: that email. Here are some excerpts:

*CLINTON ADMITS SHE IS OUT OF TOUCH*

*Hillary Clinton: “I’m Kind Of Far Removed” From The Struggles Of The Middle Class “Because The Life I’ve Lived And The Economic, You Know, Fortunes That My Husband And I Now Enjoy.” *“And I am not taking a position on any policy, but I do think there is a growing sense of anxiety and even anger in the country over the feeling that the game is rigged. And I never had that feeling when I was growing up. Never. I mean, were there really rich people, of course there were. My father loved to complain about big business and big government, but we had a solid middle class upbringing. We had good public schools. We had accessible health care. We had our little, you know, one-family house that, you know, he saved up his money, didn’t believe in mortgages. So I lived that. And now, obviously, I’m kind of far removed because the life I’ve lived and the economic, you know, fortunes that my husband and I now enjoy, but I haven’t forgotten it.” [Hillary Clinton Remarks at Goldman-Black Rock, 2/4/14]

*CLINTON SAYS YOU NEED TO HAVE A PRIVATE AND PUBLIC POSITION ON POLICY*

*Clinton: “But If Everybody’s Watching, You Know, All Of The Back Room Discussions And The Deals, You Know, Then People Get A Little Nervous, To Say The Least. So, You Need Both A Public And A Private Position.”* CLINTON: You just have to sort of figure out how to — getting back to that word, “balance” — how to balance the public and the private efforts that are necessary to be successful, politically, and that’s not just a comment about today. That, I think, has probably been true for all of our history, and if you saw the Spielberg movie, Lincoln, and how he was maneuvering and working to get the 13th Amendment passed, and he called one of my favorite predecessors, Secretary Seward, who had been the governor and senator from New York, ran against Lincoln for president, and he told Seward, I need your help to get this done. And Seward called some of his lobbyist friends who knew how to make a deal, and they just kept going at it. I mean, politics is like sausage being made. It is unsavory, and it always has been that way, but we usually end up where we need to be. But if everybody’s watching, you know, all of the back room discussions and the deals, you know, then people get a little nervous, to say the least. So, you need both a public and a private position. And finally, I think — I believe in evidence-based decision making. I want to know what the facts are. I mean, it’s like when you guys go into some kind of a deal, you know, are you going to do that development or not, are you going to do that renovation or not, you know, you look at the numbers. You try to figure out what’s going to work and what’s not going to work. [Clinton Speech For National Multi-Housing Council, 4/24/13]

Also, her campaign may have illegally coordinated with a Super-PAC. John Podesta, a Hillary campaign guy, was emailing and coordinating with David Brock, who runs a pro-Hillary Super PAC. The only reason they might technically get away with it is that it was a month before she announced. Get your coordination in before the announcement, I guess is the takeaway.

Big Media has reported all this. Today, nobody cares. There is an ever-growing list of GOP pols who have publicly backed away from Trump, and that is the only story anyone is talking about. It’s a little astounding to me, frankly. Who is pretending they are surprised by this? Donald Trump was crude and misogynistic? GET OUTTA TOWN! But apparently this is the straw breaking the elephant’s back for a lot of people. It will be the first question at the debate and will dominate headlines for days.

  1. THIS turns out to be what kills Trump?

    THIS?

    Patterico (bcf524)

  2. No, what kills Trump is his stupidity, coupled with his followers stupidity. He was never able to get the focus on to Hillary’s weaknesses instead of his own.

Remember all that nonsense about how he was a master of publicity? Horse manure.

  5. From the conventions on, I’ve believed that the primary strategy of the Republican Party has had to be “make sure that if HRC manages to win, she is facing a hostile Congress and that she has been crippled to the maximum extent possible while staying within the bounds of legality.” The recent Trump revelations haven’t changed that. Whatever happens with Trump, no mercy can be shown to the Clinton campaign.

  6. It could get really ugly,
Trump could say that while he was saying it,
somebody else was doing it and being enabled by his wife
and it could get so ugly as to drive the lowest voter turnout ever

    These things by Clinton

Whoever it was about the Iran negotiations,
    And then ask,
“Do you want to keep electing the party that lies to you and calls you stupid?”

Frankly, it shouldn’t be. A lot of those names were tepid, fair weather fans to begin with.

Well here is your down ballot, state party defense of the stupid little man. “Well they did it too.” which has become such a tired worn out defense by both sides of the aisle. Here in WA the state GOP offices are getting ripped apart via phone calls, letters and emails saying “Stop the stupid”. Oh well it was a nice country while we had it.

  19. It will be the first question at the debate.

I think he would welcome being asked about it at the debate so he could point out about the insincerity of Hillary and company’s outrage – for the obvious reason. He’d probably have to remind people of exactly what Bill did for it to be effective. Then say that this is intended to distract from the issues and list a bunch of things. If he did it skillfully enough he could probably win some people over.

I have a feeling it won’t be asked at the next debate.

GOP bought the ticket, GOP can take the ride. Every person on that list The Hill compiled was full well of Trump’s moral deficiencies long before this most recent bomb was dropped. I want to know what makes now so different.

Well, he could drop out, then proclaim his magnanimity across the ages. I’d like to see what the True Believers do when the god they have every fiber of their being invested if he drops out. For sure, Breitbart would become a barren wasteland.

  31. If a Cape Buffalo is too regal for you, how about Ned Kelly or the West Hollywood bank robbers?

  34. The only resemblance Trump has to a Cape Buffalo is in the hindquarters. Like you said, the Cape Buffalo is a regal animal. Trump is an obscenely fecund deranged weasel.

    nk (dbc370)

  35. @Bill H:Well, he could drop out, then proclaim his magnanimity across the ages

Trump could drop dead tomorrow, or commit harakiri or something, and he STILL could not be taken off the ballot and electors would still be bound to vote for him.

The GOP establishment is committing mass suicide. That is not Trump’s fault. Trump can lose the election because he’s an ass, but he didn’t make the GOP office-holders pick the worst possible course of action, to get on the Trump wagon and then try to jump off.

Disavow and deny at the media’s command has never helped the GOP in any way. Democrats stick to their people no matter what, which is how they get to implement their policies on everybody even with people way worse than Trump is.

And who makes up the GOP? It wasn’t the ruling class that selected DJT for their candidate.

    Bill H (971e5f)

  39. That may be why I like Trump. I kind of like members of the mustidae family.

    Pinandpuller (e2e35f)

‘member when you said guys talk rough?

    ‘member?

    Peperidge Farms remembers.

Yes, it’s exactly the same thing as hitting on married women and grabbing their p***ies. (It’s not.)

    nk (dbc370)

  41. Actually, maybe it will be asked at the town hall debate by a Democrat plant like guy with the ponytail at the Bush-Clinton debate. Allegedly the questioners in those are undecided. I’m guessing a female who will claim they’re a Christian who now has great difficulty bringing herself to vote for Trump, and will then tick off a whole list of things Trump has said or done.

I’ll be surprised if he’s asked about it with minimal commentary, e.g., “Mr. Trump please respond to the questions that have been raised by the video in which you made some remarks about actresses”.

    Gerald A (a48c32)

  42. @nk:hitting on married women and grabbing their p***ies.

As weird as that “move” sounds, it was in Canterbury Tales.

That on a day this hende Nicholas
Fil with this yonge wyf to rage and pleye,
Whil that hir housbonde was at Oseneye,
    As clerkes ben ful subtile and ful queynte;
And prively he caughte hire by the queynte,
And seyde, “Ywis, but if ich have my wille,
For deerne love of thee, lemman, I spille.”

    Gabriel Hanna (4b5ebc)

  43. Trump could drop dead tomorrow, or commit harakiri or something, and he STILL could not be taken off the ballot and electors would still be bound to vote for him.

I should have been clearer, I guess. I was trying for sarcasm. I see it didn’t work as intended. It was an outsized answer to the question “should Trump drop out?”. You look at my post a bit further upstream, you’ll see how I really think.

The GOP establishment is committing mass suicide. That is not Trump’s fault. Trump can lose the election because he’s an ass, but he didn’t make the GOP office-holders pick the worst possible course of action, to get on the Trump wagon and then try to jump off.

I don’t care how the GOP handles this. Trump is a POS. I knew that from the day he announced his candidacy. They should have known it, too.

    Bill H (971e5f)

  44. In short Gabriel, you and I both know Trump ain’t dropping out. His ego will put the kibosh on that move.

    Bill H (971e5f)

  45. *CLINTON SAYS YOU NEED TO HAVE A PRIVATE AND PUBLIC POSITION ON POLICY*

This is the worst one. Although, the excerpt cited is about something else – secret dealmaking – and you note she justifies this and cites Abraham Lincoln gettimh the 13th amendment through Congress as a precedent.

CLINTON TALKS ABOUT HOLDING WALL STREET ACCOUNTABLE ONLY FOR POLITICAL REASONS*

This one could also be described as having both a (false) public and true private position.

Clinton admitting she is out of touch wouldn’t mean anything. Her answer to that is that she goes on listening tours and talks to average people. Nonsense, but enough to take care of any problem that woudl cause. It’s not like her competition consists of average people in the phone book (if you still get a phone book.)

She was obviously playing to her audience

    Sammy Finkelman (6e331b)

  46. @Bill H:you and I both know Trump ain’t dropping out.

Agreed, but even if he did it would not fix anything, just make things worse.

    Gabriel Hanna (4b5ebc)

  47. *Hillary Clinton Said You Know You Can’t Bring Your Phone And Computer When Traveling To China And Russia And She Had To Take Her Batteries Out And Put them In A Special Box.

A problem for Hillary if that’s not what she did. I don’t know if she actually did that or not, or f she sometimes didn’t do it. This is from a a speech given on October 29, 2013 before anybody knew anything about her emails.

*CLINTON REMARKS ARE PRO KEYSTONE AND PRO TRADE*

She waffles on that, actually. This does not contradict the public record. She may have reversed herself on the virtues of free trade, which she was 100% for at taht time, but probably has not on the general principle.

*CLINTON IS MORE FAVORABLE TO CANADIAN HEALTH CARE AND SINGLE PAYER*

It just clarifies what people would have guessed. It’s just that she avoided public statements about that. Of course all this is just for the benefit of her audience, and she probably really doesn’t believe it does only good, but that’s the “inside dope” she’s telling them..

    Sammy Finkelman (6e331b)

  48. Agreed, but even if he did it would not fix anything, just make things worse.

I’m not sure how. We already have to equally, exceptionally bad candidates. The Stupid Party is running around with it’s hair on fire yet again. And the electorate outside of the True Believers on either side just don’t seem all that motivated. Just how could Mr Tangerine Man dropping out/dead be any worse?

    Bill H (971e5f)

  49. We already have to equally…

That should be two. English really IS my first language, I swear!

    Bill H (971e5f)
