  1. Arnold Palmer was the first sports superstar who changed sports through his marketing and charisma, plus he treated his fans well. RIP.

  2. I used to follow golf a whole lot more as a child than now, and Arnold was one of the very best! Seemed to be a decent bloke too, as DRJ says.

  3. The passing of the great Arnold Palmer has brought genuine tears.

Those of us born in and familiar with Western Pennsylvania– Pittsburgh…. Latrobe [and it’s Rolling Rock beer] hold a special kinship to this truly fine man. My late grandfather knew him in his prime. And I had the pleasure of watching him play at a U.S. Open years ago. The hush as he putted remains etched in my mind.

The sport of golf and our nation has lost one of the few remaining Ambassadors of Goodness.

    God bless you, Arnie.

  4. @Patterico Do you mean you never got to see him play in person?

  5. First followed him in the 50’s, personality made for T.V. Every athlete who has ever made money endorsing a product owes this man a huge thank you. Go for broke attitude with a flawed swing made him a everyday guy.

  6. Youngsters like Patterico came along after Arnie’s prime.

Slightly off-topic: Vin Scully called his last Dodger game in Dodger stadium last night. He will call 3 more games in SF next weekend, then that’s it. Televised in LA and probably elsewhere. Sixty-seven years — only job he’s ever had.

Under the fold: Dodgers clinch division with walk-off home run in 10th.

  8. As a friend of Bill W., I will say Arnold Palmer has contributed more to the health and richness of American life than just his brilliant golf game.

I’m no student of golf, but Godspeed, Mr. Palmer. “In my father’s Kingdom, there are many mansions.”

    Hotcha!!

I don’t think so. My brother could correct me, but I don’t recall him coming through Colonial when I was a young man. I may have to research that to check my memory.

  10. This page suggests Arnie was playing Colonial in 1982, when I would have been 14. I would have been attending the tournament then, but I don’t remember him or Nicklaus. I remember virtually every other player: Weiskopf, Watson, Crenshaw, Payne Stewart (RIP), Hubie Green, Trevino, Chi Chi Rodriguez, etc.

  11. If Obama and Bubba can fly hallway across the planet for Peres’ funeral, given their love of the links, they could at least head to Latrobe on Tuesday to honor Palmer’s memory. Arnie did a helluva lot more for American prestige than those two bogies.

  12. I saw Palmer battling Nichlaus at the 67th U.S. Open in June, 1967 at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, NJ.

Palmer at play remains etched in my mind. And the green club towel I bought as a souvenir nearly 50 years ago still hangs on my bag of clubs.

Arnie’s memorial is being televised today on the Golf Channel– a broadcast outlet he conceived. I will be watching.

In my lifetime the only people who have ever projected all that is truly good about America to the world and were welcomed around the globe carrying that message– have been America’s astronauts– and Arnold Palmer.

    Ad Astra, Arnie.
