Patterico's Pontifications

I have worked all day, and it’s now late and I still have work to do — but I didn’t want to let the day go without mention. Here are two remarkable pieces, both of which I found on Glenn Reynolds’s Facebook page.

One link is to a Politico Magazine piece containing personal reflections of September 11 from high-level folks from G.W. Bush’s administration, such as Andy Card discussing the decision to interrupt Bush’s reading to the schoolkids. I’ll break my usual taboo and throw Politico the actual link on this one, because it’s a good piece.

The second is The Falling Man, an in-depth piece at Esquire about the famous picture of the upside-down man falling from the World Trade Center. Trust me: read past the initial paragraph; the writer eventually reveals that the description therein is wholly inaccurate and he knows it. Part of the story is about the search for the identity of the man. I won’t give anything away.

Hillary Clinton Falls

This morning, according to Hillary Clinton’s campaign, Clinton left the 9/11 memorial ceremony in New York City due to feeling “overheated”. In a video, Clinton can been seen standing at the curb supported by an aide as they wait for their van to arrive. As Clinton attempts to step toward the vehicle, she stumbles and begins to fall:

The candidate for the presidency was then transported to her daughter’s apartment without any press allowed to follow. A full 90 minutes later, she exited the building and told reporters that she felt great.

And while Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post brushed off Clinton’s frequent coughing jags and said we should stop talking about her health, (this in spite of his own extensive reporting on John McCain’s), it’s interesting to see that after this morning’s fall, Cillizza now agrees that her health is indeed an issue:

Whereas Clinton and her campaign could laugh off questions about her health before today, the “overheating” episode makes it almost impossible for them to do so. Not only has it come at a time when there was growing chatter — with very little evidence — that her health was a problem but it also happened at a 9/11 memorial event — an incredibly high-profile moment with lots and lots of cameras and reporters around.

Her campaign may well try to dismiss this story as nothing more than an isolated incident, meaning nothing. (Democrats were already pushing the story of George W. Bush fainting in 2002 after choking on a pretzel, via Twitter.)

But the issue is that Clinton kept reporters totally in the dark for 90 minutes after her abrupt departure from the 9/11 memorial service for a health-related matter. No reporter was allowed to follow her. (Clinton has resisted a protective pool for coverage because Donald Trump refuses to participate in one.) This is, yet again, the Clinton campaign asking everyone to just trust it. She got overheated! But she’s fine now!

I would note that right now, hours after this morning’s ceremony, it is a comfortable 81 degrees. . Clinton arrived at the commemoration at 8:00 and left at 9:30 a.m.

As a reminder, at a fundraiser on Nantucket back on August 20 when the temperature was in the high 70’s, the heat didn’t appear to be of any concern to Clinton:

I have no clue what is up with Clinton’s health, but it is just awful to watch a person’s feet refuse to step as commanded. I wish her the best, and hope whatever is ailing her is treatable. But after this morning’s mishap, her campaign is going to have to address the matter with at least a modicum of transparency. And that in itself is a very high bar for Hillary Clinton to meet.

UPDATE: This afternoon, Hillary Clinton’s doctor, Lisa R. Bardack, said Clinton has pneumonia:

Hillary Clinton has pneumonia and has been advised to rest, the Democratic presidential nominee’s doctor said on Sunday, after Clinton abruptly left the 9/11 memorial ceremony in downtown Manhattan because, her campaign initially said, she “felt overheated”.

“Secretary Clinton has been experiencing a cough related to allergies,” Dr Lisa R Bardack said in a statement. “On Friday, during follow up evaluation of her prolonged cough, she was diagnosed with pneumonia. She was put on antibiotics, and advised to rest and modify her schedule.

“While at this morning’s event, she became overheated and dehydrated. I have just examined her and she is now re-hydrated and recovering nicely.”

UPDATE BY PATTERICO: There will be more of this. Maybe she will have a coughing fit during a debate.

I’m starting to think it’s gonna be Trump.

Either way, we survived eight years of Obama. We’ll survive whatever happens next.

I’m reading a book about the Nordic countries that gives me hope that people can actually turn towards the free market when they see socialism failing. Full report when I finish it.
