Trump vs. Trump

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 1:59 pm

Start it for the blatant lies. Stay for the idiot Trumpalo at the end.

It’s really well done. It’s probably the most effective compilation of blatant Trump contradictions I have ever seen.

  1. I don’t care for the picture they use, which makes it look like it is going to be silly, when in fact it is smashingly effective.

It’s a Dallas vs. Maude election. So ask yourself which would you prefer in your face for four years on TV: Hagman haggling as Tilton, Principal and Gray jiggle into you living room across a 40 inch screen? Or a pantsuited Bea Arthur, who reminds you of your first wife from 1975, wagging her finger, nagging you to take out the trash in the middle of the 4th quarter of Monday Night Football?

If I suddenly decided to renounce my pledge and vote for Trump, my vote would not save you from the fate of President Hillary. If all of us were to do what you wanted, you’d STILL have President Hillary. Look at the polls, man. Look at the polls.

As for me, since I’m going to suffer a Hillary presidency in either event, I will at least not fall to the ridiculous depths of Homer Simpson. I will not vote for Kodos.

There are some polls showing it close. I believe Trump will outperform his polls by several percent. I could see as much as 5%, based on net difference. Jeffrey Gundlach, a leading Wall Street money manager, believes he’ll significantly outperform his polls.

    Gerald A (76f251)

  45. Trailing candidates always say they will outperform the polls. Sometimes they do. But not by a lot. Hillary’s mistakes are largely behind her. Trump’s occur daily and there will be film at 11.

thank goodness though Mr. Trump will be there for to help with leadership and such

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  48. There are some polls showing it close.

Clinton is leading in every one of the last eleven polls listed, at this date, in the RCP average main page. Eight of those polls have her up by 5 or more. Of the eight polls with close dates in August, five have Clinton leading at or outside the margin of error. Two have her leading inside the margin of error. The one that doesn’t list a margin of error, interestingly, is the one where Trump does best. And even there, Clinton leads by 1.

Which is my long-winded way of saying that while your statement is literally true, your evidence is not strong enough to draw the conclusions that you want to draw.

I believe Trump will outperform his polls by several percent. I could see as much as 5%, based on net difference.

    1) Lots of people believe lots of things. Not to be rude, but who are you, that I should weigh your beliefs so heavily? What is your background in polling? Why should your opinion count as much as, or more than, the opinion of a proven expert — like Nate Silver? Why should I give your opinion even as much weight as the evidence of my own eyes?

    2) On what is your belief based? I don’t have time to go back and research the exact numbers right now, but when the Republican primary was in full swing, Trump rarely outperformed his polls. In fact, he often significantly underperformed them, by roughly the 5% margin you’re citing. If he so often underperformed with Republican voters, why should he do better in the general, which include far more voters that should be far less inclined toward him?

    3) What net difference do you mean? The net difference between two particular sets of polls? The net difference between Trump’s past polling and his past results? (Surely not that…it wouldn’t cut in your favor.) The net difference between Trump’s past results-against-polling and Clinton’s past results-against-polling? And where do you get this number of 5%?

Jeffrey Gundlach, a leading Wall Street money manager, believes he’ll significantly outperform his polls.

Oh. Well, if that is the opinion of Jeffrey Gundlach, an authority I’ve never heard of in a field totally unrelated to political polling, then it must be true. Yours is obviously a well-founded contention, and how silly I was to think otherwise. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m due for a conference call with Katy Perry to get her insights on Middle Eastern disarmament, followed by a dinner with John McCain where we’ll be discussing which of the current “Dancing with the Stars” pros is the best technical dancer.

  52. ‘Hillary Clinton recklessly discussed, in emails hosted on her private server, an Iranian nuclear scientist who was executed by Iran for treason, Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., said Sunday.

“I’m not going to comment on what he may or may not have done for the United States government, but in the emails that were on Hillary Clinton’s private server, there were conversations among her senior advisors about this gentleman,” he said on “Face the Nation.” Cotton was speaking about Shahram Amiri, who gave information to the U.S. about Iran’s nuclear program.

The senator said this lapse proves she is not capable of keeping the country safe.

“That goes to show just how reckless and careless her decision was to put that kind of highly classified information on a private server. And I think her judgment is not suited to keep this country safe,” he said.’

  55. I believe Trump will outperform his polls by several percent </blockquote. I think that's correct unless the people doing the polls adjust for that.

Bob Dole, in 1996, outperformed his polls in 1996 by about 8%, although Wikipedia says the Gallup poll (which it used) hit it on the mark (but Clinton got 3% less than he polled)

The polls were wrong, but they weren't wrong enough.

One factor this year, is that that people could drift to and from the Libertarian Party candidate, but mostly nott to Donald Trump.

Mr. Trump is the only thing standing between Hillary and the White House.
Everything that weakens him improves her chance.

Sorry you didn’t get the champion you wanted, your preferred champion failed to make the cut.
Mr. Trump is champion we have.

As a wise man once said, you go to war with the army you have, not the army you wish you had.

Maybe Cruz or Rubio or Kasich or whoever could have beaten Hillary. Maybe, maybe not — it’s impossible to prove a counterfactual.
But that doesn’t matter now; none of them are in the ring.

Mr. Trump is the only thing standing between Hillary and the White House.
Everything that weakens him improves her chance.

  59. Kevin M,

It’s not about infidel conservatives “owning” up to their mistakes.
It’s about a choice between two nominees.

  61. Cruz Supporter… the perfidy and arrogance of certain folks is appalling.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  62. @ Cruz Supporter, #53

Is that the best you can do? Respond to substance with snark?

Oh, yes. Trump supporter. Never mind.

And you proved it again with #62, by the way. I am not trying to punish you. Neither is Kevin. Anyone who voted for Trump or Hillary, helping them to secure the nomination, has already punished all of us. I’m just not buying into your binary narrative — you know, the one that says if we refuse to vote for the Democrat who’s running as a Republican, that means we’re supporting the Democrat who’s running as a Democrat. Also, the one that says if we refuse to vote for a man we know we can’t trust, that means we’re supporting a woman we know we can’t trust. Not every binary choice has a good, or even a less bad, answer. And Gary Johnson IS on the ballot.

If you persist in ignoring Trump’s record of going back on pretty much every damn thing he says, and his long cronyist history of supporting progressive politicians and causes, that’s your affair. If you can’t quite bring yourself to ignore it, but nevertheless think he’d have to be a better president that Hillary just because she’s so bad he can’t possibly be worse, fine. But people like me don’t agree with you. That’s all there is to it.

    Demosthenes (09f714)

  63. @ Colonel Haiku, #64

That wasn’t a very nice thing to say about Cruz Supporter. He’s not perfidious or arrogant. He’s just wrong. Okay, maybe he’s being a *little* arrogant about it, but still…

    Demosthenes (09f714)

  64. I assume that paterricco chooses to boost the Hillary campaign because he imagines Trump losing will validate his life choices and he can claim to have been one of the cool rebels all along. However when Trump wins, what will he be? Part of the loser chorus who did their very best to derail their own party candidate. I can imagine his readership sinking into 3 digits shortly after. It will be well deserved.
