  8. Another miracle of modern psychiatry. Have the therapists provided their usual lifetime, money back guarantee should Mr. Hinckley begin to develop plans to once again impress Ms Foster? Or is this whole thing predicated on the revelation that Ms Foster is gay, thereby removing the underlying cause of Mr. Hinckley’s obsession? Or did the psychiatrists conclude that since, as a felon, it would be illegal for Hinckley to possess a gun, there was no longer any need to be concerned about a gun shooting someone? Should Ms Foster increase her security team since word has it that Hinckley was outraged upon discovering her sexual orientation? Any chance that Hinckley will be given an apartment in the same building as his psychiatrists, or the members of the parole board who made this decision? What, just for argument’s sake, is the recidivism rate for insane murders?

Another step down the road to Wonderland.

Yes, it is inconceivable that an insane murderer would use a hack saw or cable cutters to remove such a device before heading off to shoot the President of the United States, or some other victim. It is beyond inconceivable, it is insane!

I’d say that he is almost certain to repeat, but using an AK-47 to ensure that every Democrat in the country will mentions him by name. He already has a “Get of Jail” card, and he might even think that this time the legislation will be named after him and not an unintended victim. Pavlov would understand even if it is beyond the scope of modern psychiatry.

I put this “Hinkley is nuts and so we’ll never investigate” as every bit as nefarious a political calculation as Comey’s pronouncements on Hillary’s server.

They don’t have that excuse anymore. The GOP (we the lowly retail voter) weeded out the last Bush.

There was a trial, but he was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

    http://law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/hinckley/hinckleytrial.html

because it would have implicated the Vice President.

And let us say John Hinckley’s real motive was to make George Bush 41 president, and not something as irrational as impressing Jody Foster, it doesn’t follow that George Bush the Elder instigated him to do this, even if George Bush knew members of his his family, or maybe it is that his family knew members of his. This would be true even if George Bush once shook his hand, which apparenly never happened. Maybe he was afraid of nuclear war. Who knows?

    http://law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/hinckley/jfostercommun.HTM

    12:45 P.M.

    Dear Jodie,

There is a definite possibility that I will be killed in my attempt to get Reagan…

…Jodie, I would abandon this idea of getting Reagan in a second if I could only win your heart and live out the rest of my life with you, whether it be in total obscurity or whatever.

I will admit to you that the reason I’m going ahead with this attempt now is because I just cannot wait any longer to impress you. I’ve got to do something now to make you understand, in no uncertain terms, that I am doing all of this for your sake! By sacrificing my freedom and possibly my life, I hope to change your mind about me. This letter is being written only an hour before I leave for the Hilton Hotel. Jodie, I’m asking you to please look into your heart and at least give me the chance, with this historical deed, to gain your respect and love.

So, if he gets killed, she’ll love him? How will that benefit him after he’s dead? Why would he think Jodie Foster would like to see Ronald Reagan dead? Something seems to be missing here. Would any movie him this idea??

But I think anyone it’s long past when he wanted anyone dead. He could be prosecuted for murder, now hat Jim Brady’s death has been ruled a homicide, but they just didn’t want to bother..

wasnt he found not guilty by reason of insanity? – 5A – double jeopardy.

    joe (debac0)

  32. So Hinckley isn’t a felon. Just another success story in modern psychiatry. Should we presume that he’ll be able to purchase a firearm? If he’s caring for his mother, I’d assume that he will be able to get a driver’s license.

And Doc, if that alarm goes off in Hinckley’s house, who will hear who will also want to intervene. And if the alarm goes off in the local 911 response center, who’s to say they’ll be able to respond before Hinckley gets on a bicycle and puts a couple of miles between him and his last known location. Who’s to say they’ll even respond? What if the house is aflame and the vehicle is in the driveway. How many days will it take to figure out he’s fled?

This release is predicated on nothing more than Hinckley wanting to obey the rules.

    BobStewartatHome (a52abe)

  34. papertiger,

Will you and your bud ropelight please stop with the silly “Bush 41 conspired to have Reagan assassinated” insanity?
Between now and the November election, please put your Crazy Uncle Papertiger conspiracies under wraps, eh?

We don’t need to jeopardize Hillary’s forthcoming defeat simply because on-the-fence voters stop to consider that the Trump guy (you!) is sitting on a park bench ranting about the Loch Ness Monster or a kooky Bush-Hinckley Conspiracy.

Trump supporters need to come across as rational, normal human beings who aren’t visited by flying saucers or little green men from Mars.
Let’s allow the Hillary supporters to publicly embarrass themselves with anecdotes about political assassinations and aliens and monsters, okay?
    Thank you, Sir.

  35. mainstream news doesn’t like to reference the subject for some unknowable reason

The Brady Bill (1993) was one well-publicized result of the assassination attempt. As for more recent publicity, Hinckley failed in his task as far as our current media is concerned. If it doesn’t fit the narrative, it is ignored. Assassinating Cops is more in line with current media priorities. And for the record, Ford was the subject of two attacks, both by women associated with lunatic fringe groups … not the Tea Party or they’d continue to be celebrated in the media.

    narciso (732bc0)

  38. I’m not arguing hard.
In my experience, supervision is often a joke,
but if treatment is a shot every two weeks, and the med doesn’t completely lose effectiveness for 3-4 weeks the situation usually is well controlled,
with the problem being that most people can’t be ordered to take their medicine,
But the alternative being jail helps…a lot.

I’m just sayin we often remind ourselves to wait and get all of the facts before we jump to conclusions,
    that is all.
Maybe it is a terrible idea,
Maybe the details make it only a questionable idea.

    Yes those parolees are nuts.
People come out of hard time hard.
They meet all the wrong people and sometimes come out owing some very bad people a debt.
A lot of them arm themselves as soon as possible because even their friends are dangerous.
The cops give them no slack, and if they are robbed and/or beaten, the cops just drive on.
    So yeah, they are nuts.
No money, no food, no job and a f*** the man attitude?

I don’t think they could prosecute him for that, because it’s already been legally established that he was nuts at that time. Collateral estoppel should prevent the government from asking a new jury to find that he was sane.

  85. So Mark David Chapman stays in, but they release the guy who tried to assassinate the POTUS?

What difference does it make whom they shot? The only relevant question is whether they’re still dangerous. If they’re not then there’s no justification for keeping them imprisoned, no matter whether they killed someone or did nothing at all. If the nature of their actions while insane can affect their release, that would be punishing them for what they did, which would be thoroughly illegal.

In principle, you’re right. However, killing the President is especially dangerous to society, so the standard of certainty for releasing the killer should be proportionally higher.

Similarly, a mentally ill person committed over destroying a sign may be released more readily than one committed over slaughtering a family.

I hate to burst anybody’s bubble but the only tracking device Hinckley will have to put up with won’t be attached to his body in any way, shape, or form. He’s merely required to carry a GPS-enabled smartphone when he leaves the house.

    Steve57 (2d3b12)

  90. You’re not bursting any bubble, just giving info.
Everything I said was preceded by a big IF,
and you’re pointing out that indeed they do not appear to be serious about keeping him within monitoring.

    MD in Philly (fd8637)

  91. MD, how is your emotional state, on this last? day of the convention? Is your heart-rate closer to normal and did you sleep better last night?

    nk (dbc370)

  92. Actually things have been pretty low key, per reports of son the detective working plain clothes / under cover observing for trouble.
We personally are far away from it, living within the city limits but at the north end of Broad St, and the activities are at the southern end (and city hall in the center)
The pope’s visit was a much bigger imposition on normal activities.

    MD in Philly (fd8637)

  93. Good to hear it. You worrying about your son was what I was thinking of.

    nk (dbc370)

  94. The person in Ausbach Germany was obviously in contact – undetected – with someone else from ISIS. He also made a video which ISIS or somebody pretending to be ISIS, had a copy of. And he probably didn’t learn how to build a bomb from the Internet. As a German official said, if you have a book about knitting, that doesn’t mean you know how to knit.

He had been wounded in Syria or Iraq and had left the battle zone for hospital treatment. At that time ISIS did not want its fighters to go leave their territory, but only wanted “soldiers” to come. They didn’t 100% stop them from leaving, or succeed in stopping them.

The one in France who killed a policeman also did not act on his own. In both cases, communication with other people was missed.

He was later re-activated. I think his name was Mohammad Daleel, and also “Abu Yussuf al-Karra”

    Sammy Finkelman (372aad)

  95. Hinckley also is supposed to maintain no contact or write to any member of the Reagan or Brady family or that of any of his other victims, and stay away from any place where a president or vice president or even a Congressman might live. (if I understand the retriction)

    Sammy Finkelman (372aad)

  96. Thanks, nk.
Actually, he was undercover observation with a sign and a story that put him in the class of “loonies to be left alone”. I won’t divulge unless he says I can, in case he wants to reprise the role… his wife said he was getting into it too much, altering his posture and everything.
His comment, “Even the socialists shook their heads and walked away…”
his job was to observe and report, unless an immediate life threatening event occurred. Pistol in small of his back under backpack, panels of a vest in his backpack to use as a shield, so along with the elemnet of surprise he was likely a lot safer than people in uniform and FBI who looked like FBI agents, complete with earpiece.

But as of this morning things have gone very well. the protestors in general have been very well self-policed to be peaceful, the green Party and their leader have taken up the role of being “the disrupters of the disrupters”, when people start to get riled up they inflitrate with their hippie clothes and hippie mannerisms, like cadmium rods in an atomic reactor.

There was one incident last night where about 20 serious anarchists, black bandanas and such, stormed the barrier wall, and were taken into custody. The rest of the protestors were against them, an overwhelming police presence that “could handle a riot of 500 people” easily corraled them.

I think, tragically for the police of Dallas and baton Rouge and their families, those police deaths reminded all of the non-anarchists that things were risking getting out of hand,
just as the anti-war mobs in madison in 1970 essentially disappeared overnight after the bombing of Sterling Hall and the death of a grad student.

Hinckley also is supposed to maintain no contact or write to any member of the Reagan or Brady family or that of any of his other victims, and stay away from any place where a president or vice president or even a Congressman might live. (if I understand the retriction)

He was also supposed to not shoot a President, or anyone else, so there’s some concern that Mr Hinckley doesn’t always not do what he’s not supposed to do.

so there’s some concern that Mr Hinckley doesn’t always not do what he’s not supposed to do.

That was the way Hinckley was 35 years ago. But now he does tend to not to do what is not supposed to do, even though they may be onerous for him. They say he’s rarely violated any of the (hospital?) rules or
lied to his therapists in recent years.

Kenneth Duberstein, who was Ronald Reagan’s Chief of Staff for a brief period was quoted in the New York Times as saying:

The consequences of trying to kill the leader of the free world should be prison for life

But, technically, this wasn’t prison, but a form of preventive detention, and his doctors say he’s been largely OK for the past twenty years.

For the last 27 years, he no longer talks or ruminates about all the things that led to his murder attempt – no more Jodie Foster or assassination talk, or apparent interest in any of that any more. And he last attempted to commit suicide in 1983.

Note: Another condition is that he is not supposed to have a Facebook or Twitter or other social media account without the unanimous consent of his treatment team.

One of the conditions of his release should be that he is required to live in a “shall issue” or “constitutional carry” state. Just in case he doesn’t not do what he’s not supposed to do. Things have changed since 1981.
