Trump Won’t Debate Sanders

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:29 am

He said he would — if they put up enough charity money. Then the networks pledged a million and he said it’s gotta be ten million. Then a savvy company got its name in the news by pledging ten million. D’oh! Never saw that coming, did you, moron? Now Lewandowski and the giant pile of hair on his head say Trump won’t waste his time. The joke is, yet again, on anyone who believes anything Donald Trump ever says. Chump suckers.

  2. I agree with not debating Sanders, but it was stupid to float the “promise” to debate him.

  3. SHOCKING! “But he never said he would actually debate Sanders, so he’s not going back on his word! This is all the GOPe’s fault, especially that Lyin’ Ted.”

  6. I think Rick Ballard has nailed it. Trump has no internal sense of honor, of being bound by what he said yesterday. So when he says, “I’ll do X,” in that moment, he probably thinks he means it. So he’d pass a polygraph, because he thinks he isn’t lying. But because you can’t trust him to carry through on his promises, for all intents and purposes, it’s not really any different than if he was lying.

  12. “because he thinks he isn’t lying”

I believe it has more to do with his assessment of the intelligence and attention span of TrumpChumps. The multitude of intentional lies uttered by Clinton and Obama rely upon parsing and/or unverifiable model constructs targeted slightly above the O-bot/TrumpChump level of gullibility and credulity. Trump is quite capable of shooting a little higher, as will be made manifest in the dissection of the lies of inducement used to perpetuate the Trump University fraud.

four lean hounds crouched low and smiling
    the merry deer ran before.

Fleeter be they than dappled dreams

Horn at hip went my Trump riding
    riding the echo down

four lean hounds crouched low and smiling
    the level meadows ran before.

Softer be they than slippered sleep
    the lean lithe deer
    the fleet flown deer.

Four fleet does at a gold valley
    the famished arrows sang before.

Bow at belt went my Trump riding
riding the mountain down into the silver dawn.

four lean hounds crouched low and smiling
    the sheer peaks ran before.

Paler be they than daunting death
    the sleek slim deer
    the tall tense deer.

Four tall stags at a green mountain
    the lucky hunter sang before.

All in green went my Trump riding
on a great horse of gold
    into the silver dawn.

four lean hounds crouched low and smiling
    my heart fell dead before.

If three more Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s on the Supreme Court appeals to you, don’t vote for Trump.
If the idea of loosing Congress turns you on, don’t vote Trump.
If you think completing Obama’s total takeover of the government by leftist communists is “cool” don’t vote for Trump.
If you don’t need the First and Second Amendments, don’t vote for Trump.
If having a President who is 100% against everything you stand for is more appealing than having a flawed President who’s only 50% for what you stand for, don’t vote for Trump.
And if you admire a person who you’ve never once heard say: “I love America”, don’t vote Trump.

It’s obvious. Hillary’s a communist and Trump’s a capitalist. If they’re both scoundrels, fools, liars, vulgar pigs, law breakers and narcissistic idiots there is still a communist hiding under Hillary’s pantsuit. Trump wins.

45 years ago today I was crawling around a stinkin’ sweaty jungle because it was my duty. I fought, bled and killed for this country and I didn’t do it for a$$holes like Obama, or grifters like Hillary or even foul-mouthed idiots like Trump. I did it for us. For you and me and I didn’t even know you. For our families. For what I believe to be the Great and Noble promise that once was America and can be again. We need to stop Hillary. God Bless America.

    Whatever happened to:

Now if you feel inclined to set yourself up as a judge of those who sin, let me assure you, whoever you are, that you are in no position to do so. For at whatever point you condemn others you automatically condemn yourself, since you, the judge, commit the same sins. God’s judgment, we know, is utterly impartial in its action against such evil-doers. What makes you think that you who so readily judge the sins of others, can consider yourself beyond the judgment of God? Are you, perhaps, misinterpreting God’s generosity and patient mercy towards you as weakness on his part?

  48. I believe Ecclesiastes 2 sums up Trump, and the internal and external changes a leader of his type must make:

Study of Pleasure-seeking. 1 I said in my heart,[a] “Come, now, let me try you with pleasure and the enjoyment of good things.” See, this too was vanity. 2 Of laughter I said: “Mad!” and of mirth: “What good does this do?” 3 Guided by wisdom,[b] I probed with my mind how to beguile my senses with wine and take up folly, until I should understand what is good for human beings to do under the heavens during the limited days of their lives.

4 I undertook great works; I built myself houses and planted vineyards; 5 I made gardens and parks, and in them set out fruit trees of all sorts. 6 And I constructed for myself reservoirs to water a flourishing woodland. 7 I acquired male and female slaves, and had slaves who were born in my house. I also owned vast herds of cattle and flocks of sheep, more than all who had been before me in Jerusalem. 8 I amassed for myself silver and gold, and the treasures of kings and provinces. I provided for myself male and female singers and delights of men, many women.[c] 9 I accumulated much more than all others before me in Jerusalem; my wisdom, too, stayed with me. 10 Nothing that my eyes desired did I deny them, nor did I deprive myself of any joy; rather, my heart rejoiced in the fruit of all my toil. This was my share for all my toil. 11 But when I turned to all the works that my hands had wrought, and to the fruit of the toil for which I had toiled so much, see! all was vanity and a chase after wind. There is no profit under the sun. 12 What about one who succeeds a king? He can do only what has already been done.[d]

Study of Wisdom and Folly. I went on to the consideration of wisdom, madness and folly. 13 And I saw that wisdom has as much profit over folly as light has over darkness.

    14
Wise people have eyes in their heads,
    but fools walk in darkness.

Yet I knew that the same lot befalls both.[e] 15 So I said in my heart, if the fool’s lot is to befall me also, why should I be wise? Where is the profit? And in my heart I decided that this too is vanity. 16 The wise person will have no more abiding remembrance than the fool; for in days to come both will have been forgotten. How is it that the wise person dies[f] like the fool! 17 Therefore I detested life, since for me the work that is done under the sun is bad; for all is vanity and a chase after wind.
Study of the Fruits of Toil

To Others the Profits. 18 And I detested all the fruits of my toil under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who is to come after me. 19 And who knows whether that one will be wise or a fool? Yet that one will take control of all the fruits of my toil and wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity. 20 So my heart turned to despair over all the fruits of my toil under the sun. 21 For here is one who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill, and that one’s legacy must be left to another who has not toiled for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. 22 For what profit comes to mortals from all the toil and anxiety of heart with which they toil under the sun? 23 Every day sorrow and grief are their occupation; even at night their hearts are not at rest. This also is vanity.

24 [g]There is nothing better for mortals than to eat and drink and provide themselves with good things from their toil. Even this, I saw, is from the hand of God. 25 For who can eat or drink apart from God? 26 [h]For to the one who pleases God, he gives wisdom and knowledge and joy; but to the one who displeases, God gives the task of gathering possessions for the one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a chase after wind.

  79. Trump’s problem in debating Sanders is that the kinds of answers he gave in the GOP debates were largely either about himself, or attacks on his opponents, or a few generalities that were targeted to specific voting blocks, e.g. “We aren’t protecting Christians”, “The police aren’t getting enough support”, “We don’t win any more”, etc. And of course there was his bread and butter issue, illegals. Other that he had little to say. For some weird reason that got him lots of votes.

However in debating Sanders he might have to explain why Sanders’ Medicare for All proposal isn’t a good idea. The problem is Trump doesn’t really know why.

  80. Rev. Hoagie,

I do hope to meet you face to face sometime,
and you certainly have real world war experience that demands our respect even if there is some degree of disagreement.

Kevin M. can speak for himself, but I thought he meant that for someone to voice the words “God bless America” doesn’t mean anything about the person saying those words, not that the phrase itself is devoid of meaning.

I don’t think I know if Trump agrees with 1% or 100% with me on policy positions, that is the problem comparing him to anybody. By the given history, Trump is for the Trumpster at the expense of the legitimate claims of others, be they sick family members or workers on a project that went through bankruptcy.
As I have said before, I want to see what people have done over time,
not what they have said in the last 6 months.
If the choice in November is Clinton vs. Trump, I will vote for Clinton because of all that she stands for,
but that will be the only solid reason I will have to vote for Trump,
whatever he promises means nothing to me.
I would not trust him to invest money in a development of his
I will not trust him to vote for him for president.
I will vote for him if I have to and hope and pray that the devil we get is better than the devil we know

But I am still hoping and praying that will not be the case.

    Do you know this poem?

    http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems-and-poets/poems/detail/42633

It has what I thought was a horribly depressive line:

Time is the fire in which we burn

But in the poem, there is a hope of sorts:

Time is the school in which we learn

My nickname here was never my preference, but I had little choice. I love me my some RAH, and TMIAHM is my favorite of his novels, so there you go.

Just wait until October when he quits the race and endorses Hillary.

I (and a few other people) heard from someone, who said he heard from someone, who was in the room, where a group of Russians offered to finance one of the candidates against Vladimir Putin. I don’t know the election, and I wasn’t familiar enough for the name to have stuuck in my mind. Maybe Vladimir Zhirinovsky. (in that case before his political profile became too well known) But this candidate didn’t want to take it. It seems like he wanted to be “Leader of the Opposition” not president. Anything more maybe scared him.

But this is not Russia. And none of the candidates actually quit there, in all the elections Vladimir Putin has run. Putin’s tactic was always to have an unacceptable opponent.

  120. Trump has all the idiots in a fog of confusion. He has them chasing their own tails worrying about petty details while he wraps up the big prize. He says stuff to provoke people until they bite, then he claims he never said it. He knows you can prove it, he’s not an idiot. But he doesn’t care that you can prove it. It’s a nothing, a distraction intended to tie up critics with pointless trivia and arguments of no substance.

Do you think a man known for lying and breaking his word can get by on handshake deals like he does? Trumps’ business model is not admirable:

The major banks, for their part, say they are leery of lending to him after having lost millions of dollars on past deals. Lawyers and contractors he has hired in the past say he is slow to pay his bills, and often shortchanges them. Even the few Wall Street executives who say privately that he is a friend are loath to speak publicly about him.
    ***
    Unpaid Bills

Besides the legal battles, the way Mr. Trump has managed business relationships has been a source of friction.

One contractor, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of being sued by Mr. Trump, said Mr. Trump underpaid on one large job, at one of his towers, by almost $100,000. The contractor opted not to sue, estimating the litigation would cost more than the losses. The two parties have not done business since.

Lawyers who spoke to The Times had similar stories.

Mr. Trump revels in his reputation, boasting about not paying some of his outstanding legal and construction bills. “If they do a bad job, they have to suffer,” he said. “If they overbill me or if they don’t do a good job, I take plenty of time to pay them and I negotiate with them.”

Trump’s guiding principle is and always has been about Getting Even, and his authoritarian-craving supporters seem to love him for it.

…A skeleton crew returned on board the Yorktown, and attempts were made to
tow her to safety. Hammann came alongside on 6 June to transfer a damage control party. The destroyer then lay alongside, providing hoses and water for firefighting, power, and other services while tied up next to the carrier.

The salvage party was making progress when the protective destroyer screen was penetrated by Japanese submarine I-168 after noon on 6 June. Four torpedoes were loosed; one missed, two passed under Hammann and hit Yorktown, and the fourth hit the destroyer amidships, breaking her in half.

As the debris from the explosion rained down and the ships lurched apart, it was apparent that the Hammann was doomed.

MASTER-AT-ARMS SECOND CLASS MARK A. MAYO
    UNITED STATES NAVY

for service as set forth in the following

    CITATION:

For heroism while serving at Naval Station Norfolk Security Detachment, Norfolk, Virginia on 24 March 2014. While performing his duties as Chief of the Guard, Petty Officer Mayo was alerted to a suspicious individual walking towards USS MAHAN (DDG 72) on Pier 1, Naval Station Norfolk. Petty Officer Mayo pursued the individual up the brow of the ship while both he and the Quarterdeck watch-standers directed the individual to stop and provide identification. Failing to comply, the individual approached the Quarterdeck, attacked and disarmed the Petty Officer of the Watch. After boarding the ship, Petty Officer Mayo realized that the Petty Officer of the Watch no longer had control of her weapon. With complete and total disregard for his own personal safety, Petty Officer Mayo immediately placed himself between the Petty Officer of the Watch and the assailant. While fearlessly engaging the assailant and shielding the Petty Officer of the Watch, Petty Officer Mayo was fatally wounded. His exceptionally brave actions saved the lives of four watch-standers and ensured the safety of the entire crew of USS MAHAN (DDG 72). By his courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk, Petty Officer Mayo prevented the loss of lives, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service…
