Trump 2005: I “Won’t Do Anything” to Take Care of My Kids

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 1:09 pm

This would play well in a general election:

“Do you actually change diapers?” host Anthony Cumia asked Donald Trump on the Opie and Anthony show in November of 2005.

The then 59-year-old businessman, whose wife Melania was pregnant with his fifth child and her first, responded bluntly: “No, I don’t do that.”

There’s a lot of women out there that demand that the husband act like the wife and you know there’s a lot of husbands that listen to that,” Trump added. “So you know, they go for it.”

It goes deeper than that. He did nothing to take care of the kids, except provide the money:

“I mean, I won’t do anything to take care of them. I’ll supply funds and she’ll take care of the kids. It’s not like I’m gonna be walking the kids down Central Park,” Trump said in the interview. He repeated the same sentiment to Stern two years laters, saying, “Melania is a wonderful mother. She takes care of the baby and I pay all of the costs.

Trump’s five children — Ivanka, Eric, Donald, Tiffany, and Barron — have been a highly visible part of his presidential bid and have all publicly praised their father as a parent.

You gotta say nice things if you want to stay in the will.

But Trump himself has described himself as hands off, and, in the same 2005 interview with Howard Stern, expressed disdain for his ex-wife Marla Maples for suggesting he walk their daughter, Tiffany, down the street.

“Well, Marla used to say, ‘I can’t believe you’re not walking Tiffany down the street,’ you know in a carriage,” Trump said. “Right, I’m gonna be walking down Fifth Avenue with a baby in a carriage. It just didn’t work.”

I don’t envy this man.

More at the link, including a bit about his suggestion to Maples that one of his now daughters be aborted (“Well, what are we going to do about this?”).

  1. Manafort will try to re-make him or adjust the “Trump Brand,” but that’s a doomed effort: Trump never will stop being Trump, and that’s the opposite of being presidential:

Trump also criticized those who recorded the conversation with Manafort, even while insisting that the comments have been misconstrued but were ultimately correct.

“To show you how honorable the people in the room were, they taped these conversations. They didn’t tell anybody. Probably illegal,” he said in Bridgeport. “I wonder if it’s legal. Maybe they have to go to jail.”

You got that, Trumpkins? Your boy was too chicken to show up in person in Florida to court these high-powered delegates, so he sent Manafort to lie on his behalf. If it weren’t a lie, why would Trump be threatening people who exposed it with jail?

Seriously, why is it that Trump wants his shills like Manafort to preach one gospel to the establishment, while he wants his public shills (like the ones who comment here) to be kept in the dark about that?

It’s because he’s a liar, and he’s lying to you. Suckers.

You cannot point to a single word or phrase in Patterico’s post above — or, for that matter, at the Buzzfeed link — which makes the slightest attack or negative portrayal of any of Trump’s children.

So you’re doing exactly what Obama does — you’re creating an alternate universe filled with strawmen for you to attack, while you ignore the actual point of the post.

This isn’t attacking Trump’s kids. It’s so intellectually sloppy to claim otherwise that one has to doubt the good faith of the person so claiming.

Rather, this post attacks Trump and Trump alone, directly and without ambiguity, as being insincere and inconsistent about himself. Almost everything in the post and in the Buzzfeed link consists of things Donald Trump said. Only in Trumpkin/Obama logic does publicizing something that Donald Trump said constitute an attack on Donald Trump’s children.

Whether Trump’s a good or bad father isn’t on my list of the top 100 most important reasons to vote against him. I’m not “on the fence,” trying to decide whether, for example, Trump is deeply misogynistic or whether instead he merely plays a misogynist on TV and in politics.

But some voters are on that fence — at least for purposes of deciding, for example, between being #NeverTrump stay-at-home, on the one hand, and being a hold-your-nose and vote-against-Hillary voter in November. Other voters are on another version of the fence, deciding whether to be a stay-at-home-’cause-it-ain’t-Bernie voter or a turn-out-against-Trump voter in November.

And stuff like this — remember, we’re only seeing the dribbles, all the good stuff is being saved for the fall — is going to keep pushing people off those fences in ways that ensure Hillary Clinton’s election.

If that Trumpkin thinks that the Trump paradigm, as expressed in Trump’s own (pre-campaign) words, is one worth emulating, then he couldn’t possibly understand how eager I am — having rearing four of my own, with active roles in rearing various nephews/nieces/others, and with a personal diaper-odometer count already in the tens of thousands — one of my main goals in life is to stay alive at least long enough to change a significant portion my next generation’s diapers.

  39. Those of us who have never been fooled by Trump have all surely detected that deep insecurity oozing from Trump. Every grandiose praise of himself, every ‘piece of ass’ he brags about, every helicopter with his name writ-gold on it… this is a man who finds himself deeply wanting for worth.

Trump has more money, but he is not richer in the ways that matter, and he knows this inside.

A good example is how he doesn’t actually care about politics enough to even have real positions on matters, or interest in talking about any specific political ideas, but he’s running for president.

It seems the poor fellow as approached by a well-meaning if somewhat overzealous priest who, in horrific detail, described the unfading torments of Hades which awaited him if he did not repent his misdeeds. The condemned man listened patiently to all that the priest had to say, and when he was done, grinned broadly and replied, ‘Eat it raw, fuzz-nuts.'”

  47. nk, I know all the other Churchill stories. I’m looking for the original of that one.

The GB Shaw one is my favorite.

In real life, Shaw sent Churchill two tickets to “Pygmalion,” with the note “Bring a friend, if you have one.”

Churchill actually sent back the tickets with the following: “I’ll come to a second performance, if there is one.”

I think “You gotta say nice things if you want to stay in the will” probably counts as a bit of a negative portrayal. Not that I think there’s anything wrong with a bit of a negative portrayal of Trump’s adult children.

I am tempted to make fun of Baron Trump’s name as well, but I know it’s not his fault so I will refrain. Donald Trump is just a pompous idiot.

Apparently, it was the French surrender-monkey generals who told the Vichy government that in three weeks the Germans would have wrung England’s neck like a chicken. Churchill said, “Some chicken!” “Some neck!” Got a standing ovation.

  57. Trump’s adult children have volunteered to enter the public fray by going on radio and television shows and in some cases explicitly taken shots at Ted Cruz. They’re spokesmen for their father, thus they’re now fair targets. Donald Trump Jr said on tv the other day that the only way Cruz can win is if he bribes the delegates.

  59. Leviticus,

I think Patterico’s statement about Trump’s children and his Will was a reference to Trump’s history in disinheriting his brother’s children, where it was reported Trump not only helped write the Will but also cut off their medical benefits in retaliation for the lawsuit they filed contesting their disinheritance. To me, Patterico is saying Trump has smart kids who learned from their father’s past behavior what he is capable of.

    DRJ (15874d)

  60. I agree we should push back against the more outrageous things happyfeet says. We’ve seen him confuse and shock commenters who aren’t regulars, even if we’ve become impervious to his ramblings. But his insecurity is palpable and he clearly needs friends.

I will try to be more kind to you, happyfeet, and I hope you can be more tolerant.

    DRJ (15874d)

  61. So Trump is looking to buy a present for Melania and not wanting the usual furs and jewelry decides to buy her a parrot.

The pet shop owner says, “I can make you a tremendous deal on this one I got schlonged with. His former home was a brothel and he has a huge potty mouth, so he turns off all potential buyers. Here, see for yourself.”

He uncovers the parrot’s cage, and the parrot, seeing Trump sqawks, “Awk, new pimp”. Trump laughs and says, “I’ll take it”.

He takes it home, and up seeing Algo Al Mar, the parrot sqawks, “Awk, new pimp, new house”. The maid opens the door for them and the parrot sqawks, “New pimp, new house, new madam”.

Trump is grinning from ear to ear. He calls to Melania to come and see what he bought her. She walks in and the parrot sqawks, “Hi, Melania!”

    Is that okay, Leviticus?

  62. Hey, DRJ, that is up to Mr. Feet. What is rewarded, becomes more frequent. So is the reverse.

And she knows that and will exploit it for all its worth. Simon Jester (c8876d)

  68. The problem with our analysis of Trump is that we consider him the disease. He is just the symptom of the disease. Like a runny nose, there are multiple symptoms. And we see them displayed here only too frequently.

The disease is the comatose state of the Republican leadership. One example will suffice. Over the weekend the Republican Caucus in Maine, with Delegates from 39 Districts, voted 19 Delegates for Cruz, and only two for Trump in the Delegation to the National Convention. This was in contradiction to the initial voting that sent the Delegates to the Caucus, which split something like 12,8,1. But it was within the rules of the caucus, and it is the way things have been done for a long time. Remarkably, the loudest voice protesting the Saturday result was the Republican Governor of Maine. This person is a career politician serving his second term. He did not become Governor without understanding and using this caucus system and its connections to the grassroots, including the creation of the platform that the Party runs on every election cycle. The same could be said of Susan Collins. But neither will defend the system, and one suddenly wants to tear it down. Of course this person is a Trump supporter, so he can expect popular support for his change of heart. Expediency seasoned with a dash of cowardice has cause these careerists to abandon the system. The only question is how many other things will they betray.

This is a very “progressive” way of doing business, and supporters of the Republican Party have become disgusted with this feature of “compassionate” conservatism. Two years of controlling the House and Senate and all we have to show for it is a continuation of budgeting by omnibus bills, ensuring an ever growing presence of Federal intervention into every aspect of our lives.

    BobStewartatHome (a52abe)

  69. I’m cynical and I DO blame the people (not the GOP leadership), the stupid masses not seeing that with Cruz you get what Trump promises plus well-thought-out policies and positions. The masses don’t see that mimicking Putin puts the nation under Putin’s sway, while adhering to carefully thought and defended principles beats Putin, who as Kasparov says is only playing one day at a time. Cruz will lead and Putin will have to follow, Trump will be Putin’s poodle, like Schroeder. The answer is there but the people have to be wise enough to support it.
