Open Thread: GOP Debate

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 4:54 pm

On a Saturday night? What are we, Democrats?

It will be interesting to see where the fire is aimed. At the person everyone says won in Iowa: Marco Rubio, who “won” by coming in third? (Coming in third isn’t everything. It’s the only thing!) Or Ted Cruz, who actually won? Or Donald Trump, who is heavily favored to win New Hampshire?

By the way, Mary Katherine Ham will be one of the moderators! Go MKH!

Coming up in moments. I plan to be in the comments.

You can live stream the debate here.

  1. Ding!

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  2. Right now it’s Cardhu 12 for me. Never tried it before.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  3. Was glad to see MKH added.

    mg (31009b)

  4. I’m going to go ahead and declare Marco Rubio the winner, just so I can be in line with Big Media.

I know it hasn’t started, but I know an incipient narrative when I see one.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  5. I hope they have to take rubio off on a stretcher.

    mg (31009b)

  6. I’m sure the winner will be one of the two non-authentic Hispanics… Hopefully it will be a night of brains over beauty.

    Dana (86e864)

  7. Very, very smooth. (The Cardhu. I know you were curious.)

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  8. How were the pancakes?

    mg (31009b)

  9. The alternative narrative: Trump won by not losing. And look at what a gentleman he was! Uncharacteristic!

It’s kind of annoying to be facing THREE HOURS of this when we all know what they will say at the end.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  10. mg: Haven’t had them yet. I think we’re actually going to get dinner at our favorite Greek restaurant instead. Haven’t quite decided. Thanks again to happyfeet for the kind gesture.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  11. I just really hope Trump doesn’t get fixated on menstruation tonight.

    Dana (86e864)

  12. I just watched 10 minutes of How I Met Your Mother at my undisclosed location. Trump will be a breeze.

    nk (9faaca)

  13. Hey! I know that Greek restaurant!

    Dana (86e864)

  14. Cardhu 12 sounds good. I’ve seen it a million times but never tried it. I’ll pick up some next time.

    felipe (56556d)

  15. Oh look it’s Lindsey Graham and John McCain.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  16. Dana,

    You do!

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  17. Is Fiorina being allowed to participate in the debate?

    Dana (86e864)

  18. The primary ads along with the debate will make this way too long.

    mg (31009b)

  19. We need to do that again, P.

    Dana (86e864)

  20. Come on out, Ben.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  21. WHAT IS CARSON DOING???

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  22. High DRAAAAAAMA. Good stuff, Ben!

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  23. what a disaster

    mg (31009b)

  24. HIlarious! No Kasich

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  25. Good Lord. He can’t even figure out when he’s supposed to come on stage. Sheesh.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  26. abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxy and z
    ABC is lost.

    mg (31009b)

  27. Moderators already exposed as tools. Niiice.

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  28. Is the moderator going to say WHY Cruz said that about Trump?

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  29. Hugh Hewitt, on Twitter, of course making excuses for the moderators.

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  30. Ted never does well when he gives “policial” answers. Voters know when he switched from his directness.

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  31. I hope you are happy GOPe. This could have, and should have, been a conservative debate. This Muir crap is what you get.

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  32. whiny lispy fruit loop is whiny

    happyfeet (831175)

  33. They should all walk off the stage.

    mg (31009b)

  34. Why do I get the feeling rubio was given his questions for rehearsal purposes.

    mg (31009b)

  35. If Ted has such a vaunted machine, how is it that for two consecutive debates, they failed to salt the audience with Ted supporters???!!!!!

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  36. ohnoes latino ken doll’s settings are stuck

    happyfeet (831175)

  37. Rubio, you already delivered that line.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  38. Lol, happyfeet.

    Dana (86e864)

  39. Twice.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  40. He said the same thing THREE TIMES IN A ROW.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  41. Rubio needs a more gravelly voice. It would help.

    Dana (86e864)

  42. that’s just creepy rico

    just creepy

    happyfeet (831175)

  43. Wow. Rubio sub-routine crashed! I am stunned. He walked right into that Christie uppercut! Kasich loving life right now, by the way.

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  44. With visions of a Berliner* dancing in his head, Christie goes for Rubio’s throat.

    * a German jelly donut

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  45. Rubio keeps repeating himself multiple times in a row.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  46. The Jersey Pumpkin scored.

    mg (31009b)

  47. Hook boosh

    mg (31009b)

  48. If Christie/Rubio was a boxing match, they would’ve ended that a long time ago and taken Rubio to the hospital in an ambulance.

    Bugg (fa64ec)

  49. GQ guy and Granny Clampett moderating? I just tuned in…

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  50. whats the bell for?

    mg (31009b)

  51. Kasich still being ignored by the moderators. Amazing.

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  52. Long hair on an older woman is not attractive. Just my opinion.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  53. Kasich still being ignored by the moderators. Amazing.

Thank God. It can’t last. He’ll interrupt any second now.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  54. It’s a circular firing squad. And that’s not a Chris Christie joke!

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  55. Why is Skeletor in a fright wig running this debate?

    Bugg (fa64ec)

  56. I’m watching Notre Dame – North Carolina basketball instead. I haven’t watched any of the debates. Does that make me a lazy and bad voter, or does it mean that I’m way smarter than the people who burn 180 minutes of their lives on this dog-and-pony-show? I think I could argue either way.

    JVW (d60453)

  57. Martha Raddatz is kind of a punk.

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  58. Reince Preibus, take a bow-and please LEAVE. WHY?

    Bugg (fa64ec)

  59. admiral ackbar to the white courtesy phone ‘it’s a trap’

    narciso (732bc0)

  60. The impossible is happening – moderators worse than MSNBC!

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  61. “Implicating our allies”-what the hell is Rubio talking about?

    Bugg (fa64ec)

  62. Is Kasich a mailmans kid?

    mg (31009b)

  63. 55… That’s what I was looking for… the correct action figure to compare Raddatz to.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  64. Quite a bit of policy discussion in the thread? Um. I thought the Jon Stewart approach was awful? I guess that doesn’t apply if you don’t like the candidate.

You see, that’s the strategy the hurts Republicans and Conservatives.

But have fun. The trouble is, you won’t be able to complain when folks pile on the nominee.

We do tend to shoot ourselves in the foot. It’s the gleeful providing ammo to the progs that saddens me.

    Simon Jester (7130cd)

  65. i don’t care this much about north korea

    happyfeet (831175)

  66. Hugh Hewitt says Latino Ken doll (that’s a keeper, happyfeet) line being repeated three times is a win for Rubio.

    Whaa?

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  67. simon, the rnc’s ability to steer right into the ambush is extraordinary, #they has one job’

    narciso (732bc0)

  68. does anyone care this much about north korea

    happyfeet (831175)

  69. You need a handkerchief, Simon?
Man up for christ sake, team republican is a bunch of babies.

    mg (31009b)

  70. Is it true? Is ABC doing a more in-the-tank job than PMSNBC did?

    John Hitchcock (61d4f8)

  71. #61 Bugg, have you ever spoken on TV? It’s hard. It’s reasonable and expected for someone to trip over a word every few minutes or so. Rubio explained clearly in his answer (twice) that we have a policy of shooting down a missile in mid-flight if it poses a threat to our assets or assets belonging to allies.

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  72. Deport all 50 million of these crimaleins.

    mg (31009b)

  73. Shut up Kasich.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  74. 71-done some public speaking, but no, I’ve never been on TV. But also I am not running for president.

    Bugg (fa64ec)

  75. Kasich says he should be running as a Democrat. His words.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  76. is a win for Rubio

    yup the narrative’s in place

so far Mr. Trump is the only one what heard and thinks hey let’s try and disrupt that

not that i think he succeeded (so far)

but it’s interesting he’s the one who sees the narrative coming – Candidates Maul Each Other While Establishment Boy Stands Above The Fray And Keeps His Sights On Obama

    happyfeet (831175)

  77. Deport 11.5 BILLION undocumented immigrants?

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  78. End the Hollywood tax cuts too, Ted!

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  79. That’s more than the population of the Earth.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  80. Nice answer by Cruz.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  81. Cruz is doing very well. Rubio looks rote, rehearsed, shallow.

    Bugg (fa64ec)

  82. And end the tyranny of Steponpoupolus!

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  83. Gotta deport the zombies, too. And the vampires. And the Lupi. And the German Cockroaches.

    John Hitchcock (61d4f8)

  84. “Bill Clinton deported TWELVE MILLION illegals.” Why in hell didn’t ted lead with that in his response?!!!!!

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  85. #66 Patterico, what Hugh Hewitt is saying about “three times” is the public relations/marketing axiom that you need to repeat your important word/phrase/slogan three times for the average person to have a better ability to process it. A lot of political consultants teach that, and that’s why in radio ads for “Joe’s Plumbing” they’ll mention the phone number or website three times or so. Repetition. Repetition. Repetition.

Look, we here are all junkies about politics, history, and the like, but there’s a large swath of the electorate even among the GOP primary voters, who don’t pay attention to who said what and who supports what policy. Like you mentioned earlier in another thread, lots of Americans watch Snooki! (LOL)

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  86. roobs wants 20,000 new federal employees?

    happyfeet (831175)

  87. Rubio is a liar. GONG him.

    mg (31009b)

  88. Enough with the governor bit, Christie. We get it and it’s boring.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  89. i want a wall and i want mexico to pay for it and i want it to have cool murals thank you

    happyfeet (831175)

  90. Someone take the fat guy out to Pine Barrens, please.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  91. Rubio/amnesty/2016

    mg (31009b)

  92. Someone better hold a mirror under Dr. Carson’s nose… or check for a pulse.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  93. Christie is spanking Rubio with a paddle. I know Christie screwed Romney having dealt with FEMA in NY after Sandy. And his hug of Obama was a betrayal that means he cannot ever be trusted. But Christie’s smacking Rubio off the head with a baseball bat repeatedly.

    Bugg (fa64ec)

  94. What’ll it be? A paddle or a bat? Pick your take.

    John Hitchcock (61d4f8)

  95. repeal

    replace (with something awesome)

    private companies bad

    deregulation and competition

    HSAs!

pls don’t die street people not in the street

    ok thx

    happyfeet (831175)

  96. Jeb just fell into the orchestra pit.

    mg (31009b)

  97. I just saw a bubble thought come out of Mr. The Donald’s head what said hey this Ted guy would make a great veep

    happyfeet (831175)

  98. ‘Not let anybody die in the street?’
Even if you shoot them in the middle of 5th Ave., eh Donald.

    DCSCA (a343d5)

  99. Kasich would drop the mean age of the Democrat Candidates from 72 down to 69.

    JVW (d60453)

  100. Another Ted answer that “sounded” like avoidance. Did he not just her DT talk about the elimination of state lines and expansion of the HSAs?

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  101. #93 Bugg, Christie comes across as Sonny Corleone when he does it. That kind of “I’m gonna whack with him a bat!” plays in certain quarters, but it’s not very Reaganesque. The circular firing squad thing does not appeal to me all that much.

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  102. Repetition. Repetition. Repetition.

    This classic bit from “Cheers.”

    JVW (d60453)

  103. It’s all very depressing. They are all awful.

    SarahW (67599f)

  104. Hey jeb go cut some brush

    mg (31009b)

  105. jebbio heads straight for the weeds

    happyfeet (831175)

  106. Boy, has the worm turned. Trump has finally lost the GOP culture.

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  107. It’s all very depressing. They are all awful.

    Candidates? Moderators? Both? Do tell.

    JVW (d60453)

  108. well more like clemenza teaching michael to shoot,

    narciso (732bc0)

  109. I love trump telling the donors to eat crow.

    mg (31009b)

  110. the audience is trashy where did these people come from

    happyfeet (831175)

  111. Trump is ready to throw tomatoes at the audience. And vice versa. Love it.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  112. They are – almost to a man – by leaps and bounds better than what and who the opposition is offering

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  113. So far Rubio and Trump both have been hammered.

    I like it!

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  114. This is better than saturday night live.

    mg (31009b)

  115. I think Trump may drop as low as 4th in New Hampshire as a direct result of this debate.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  116. So there’s that.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  117. i want a wall and i want mexico to pay for it and i want it to have cool murals thank you

The Berlin Wall had REALLY cool murals and world-class graffiti. Just not on the side what put it up.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  118. I can’t stop giggling. And I have not had booze in decades.

    mg (31009b)

  119. Notre Dame just upset #2 ranked North Carolina.

    JVW (d60453)

  120. They should quit early…if they have time.

    mg (31009b)

  121. yeah I’m thinking more Dali

    happyfeet (831175)

  122. Boy, the Democrats – personified by Karl and Steponpoupolot – are sure afraid of Rubio.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  123. Rubio says Obama knows exactly what he’s doing and Trump says he’s just incompetent and doesn’t know what he’s doing. So it’s not ideology it’s competence according to Trump. Who here agrees with Trump?

    Gerald A (7c7ffb)

  124. I think Trump may drop as low as 4th in New Hampshire as a direct result of this debate.

Optimistic. You already know my prediction: Rubio edges out Trump then Cruz. Although I’m feeling a little better about Cruz’s chances — and I think Kasich/Bush/Christie may surprise people.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  125. stop just stop, kasich.

    mg (31009b)

  126. “We want to conserve, we want to conserve our money, we want to be smart ….”

    Says the four-time bankruptcy champion.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  127. Rubio pivots to canned answer.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  128. Patrick, I responded to your gloomy prediction at length on that thread earlier tonight. I’m not nearly so gloomy.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  129. There goes Mr. Roboto.

    Bugg (fa64ec)

  130. Kasich and I have had our disagreements – bad blood started when I refused to buy grass from him at teh ’76 convention – but he really, really annoys me when he gets that twitchy smirk going!

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  131. Does Kasich think being praised by the NYT is a badge of honor?

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  132. Trump isn’t wrong here. Honda has plants in the US because Reagan put his foot down. It can be done.

    Bugg (fa64ec)

  133. The gang of eight medallion will never leave the neck of Rubio.

    mg (31009b)

  134. New Hamster is squishville. And, being from New England — more specifically, the Beantown Burbs — they like their loudmouths, too. So, for that reason, people like Trump and Christie get a bump, while the Conservative in the race — Cruz — starts off with a deficit.

    John Hitchcock (61d4f8)

  135. roobs turned his back on the so-cons with his definition of conservative

just flat out turned his back

    happyfeet (831175)

  136. Anti-Refugee Rallies Sweep Europe As Nationalists Declare “We Will Not Surrender Europe To Islam”

“German media put the number [of protesters in Dresden] at up to 8,000,” Reuters notes.

“We’re demonstrating against the Islamisation of Europe, we’re demonstrating against immigration, against an invasion,” Robert Winnicki, leader of Poland’s far-right Ruch Narodowy (National Movement), told a crowd of hundreds in Warsaw.

At the rally in Birmingham, PEGIDA supporters carried signs that read “TRUMP IS RIGHT.”

  137. Am I the only one who realizes that Scott Adams is supporting the Pointy-Haired Boss for President?

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  138. ALL, JVW. Throw in the unwholesome worthless chavs in the audience whose absent alcoholic parents never taught them deportment.

But you can guess which group is the worst of it for me. Once expects debate moderation to stink, an audience to think it’s at a european soccer match or a taping of “Judge Judy.”

Our party has nothing and no one ready to be a national leader, and it is very, very painful to me that this is so. I hate them all (as candidates) and this is too painful to watch.

    SarahW (67599f)

  139. I’m waiting for him to say “we have to negotiate smarter” or something.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  140. Fat Boy is attempting mind control… he is staring right into my soul.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  142. Kasich makes me want to go Postal.

    mg (31009b)

  143. FOURTH TIME!

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  144. Long-faced GQ boy feeling his oats, getting argumentative.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  145. How many freaking times is Rubio going to give the same canned answer?!

    Four so far.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  146. Rubio isn’t wrong here, but it sounds canned, rehearsed. A decent sound bite, but perhaps nothing more behind it.

    Bugg (fa64ec)

  147. i can’t even stand how smarmy roobs is

oh neat jebbio has the same definition of conservatism as roobs does

    happyfeet (831175)

  150. Stop it Christie!

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  151. Our party has nothing and no one ready to be a national leader, and it is very, very painful to me that this is so. I hate them all (as candidates) and this is too painful to watch.

Jeeze, SarahW, this is supposed to be the best crop of candidates that the GOP has ever fielded. I’m afraid that you may be hoping for a white knight (yeah, I denounce myself) who is never going to come.

Maybe if it is as bad as some folks are saying, Carly will benefit by not being there.

    JVW (d60453)

  152. Me, upon hearing Marco Rubio say the same thing for the fourth time:

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  153. During the break, someone said to Rubio — someone insane, mind you — “You need to clarify your remarks about Obama doing this on purpose and wanting to be America.”

Rubio’s first mistake was hiring that guy. His second was listening to him. His third was on national TV and couldn’t have been more obvious. He’s really, really rattled.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  154. Funny line, Ted. Just at the wrong time. So frustrating that he has such a tin ear.

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  155. Ted will need ice on his podium poking finger

    mg (31009b)

  156. Goddam it! Christie ordered me to buy a mixed dozen of Krispy Kremes.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  157. At least the daughter got some eye candy with David Muir. The candidates probably made a mistake letting him moderate. None of them could look as good. I’ve had enough. Nothing new or interesting from anyone, not even Trump sushing Jeb.

    nk (9faaca)

  158. i’m betting it’s alex conant, formerly with tpaw’s campaign,

    narciso (732bc0)

  159. Rubio has finally gone off the cliff completely here. Think Will E Coyote.

    Bugg (fa64ec)

  160. JVW – Is a white knight anything like a large flaming space-rock? 🙂

    SarahW (67599f)

  161. The variation of cadence, pace, tone; the lists rapid-fire; the strategic pauses: Cruz is at his rhetorical best tonight.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  162. I finally figured out what makes Rubio look so weird. Droopy left eyelid. Still droops no matter how high he puts his left eyebrow.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  163. sunni days sweeping the clouds away

    happyfeet (831175)

  164. One of these guys ought to make the point that our frackers are doing more to save Western Civilization than any other group, including this useless excuse for an administration

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  165. we know what ADHD looks like

    happyfeet (831175)

  166. Credit where it is due…Rubio is killing it in re sunnis/shia/kurds. Excellent.

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  167. All it takes is some shia to hit the fan to ruin your sunni day.

    Bugg (fa64ec)

  168. Right-on, Col.

    mg (31009b)

  169. Trump is content to be silent. He was rattled tonight too — will he find another way to get booed? Magic 8 Ball predicts: Yes!

    Beldar (fa637a)

  170. Applauding Bugg for 167.

    mg (31009b)

  171. Mr. Trump understands the banking hand motions

he’s the only one up there that knows the banking hand motions

    happyfeet (831175)

    happyfeet (831175)

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  199. in radio ads for “Joe’s Plumbing” they’ll mention the phone number or website three times or so. Repetition

A phone number or a website you really have to repeat because people have to remember it exactly, or write it down. That’s not the case for other things.

The repetition could be, though, because the audience is not the same, or for emphasis. But that depends if it obvious that it is being deliberately repeated. If it is answer to a question, and it doesn’t vary, it could also look like he has nothing else to say, or that it is canned. If the repetition is limited to one sentence or so, it may be good. If more is repeated and the entire answer is repetition, especially when it calls for somethinbg to be added, it is not so good.

    TWO:

But I would add this. Let’s dispel with this fiction that Barack Obama doesn’t know what he’s doing. He knows exactly what he’s doing.

    THREE:

Here’s the bottom line. This notion that Barack Obama doesn’t know what he’s doing is just not true. He knows exactly what he’s doing.

    FOUR:

Well, here’s the response. I think anyone who believes that Barack Obama isn’t doing what he’s doing on purpose doesn’t understand what we’re dealing with here, OK?

She meets every expectation for a LHMFM hack. But she seemed to be unable to distinguish between registering for the selective service and being drafted. In fact, she seemed to think that the draft was still in effect. Oh well …

Nationally, Rubio’s theme of attacking BHO and HRC cemented the impression he is the one most likely to win a general election. Cruz cemented himself with the Southern evangelicals with his sincere and personalized response to the drug issue.

Heard Rush Limbaugh recount a story of golfing with some Catholic buddies who’s daughters had reached their 20s and started to..get after it.And how these men who had previously been adamantly pro life suddenly were okay with their daughters having abortions. Suspect there’s a lot more of that than anyone admits. Abortion is a bad ugly thing. When the left celebrates it, they lose When we say pay for your emanating penumbrial right yourself, stop late term abortions, sensible limits, we win. But when you start asserting abortion needs to be banned, the GOP loses votes. At a loss why they continue to be absolutist when it’s a loser position instead of merely trying to limit it.

  308. Marco Rubio:

Let’s dispel with this fiction that Barack Obama doesn’t know what he’s doing. He knows exactly what he’s doing.

It’s DISPENSE WITH, not DISPEL WITH. With DISPEL, you go directly to THE FICTION, and do not include the word WITH.

Is the transcript right? Did he say DISPEL WITH?

I guess that by the third time, he’d forgotten the word altogether, or knew that he had, while he hadn’t the first time he repeated it. He didn’t use the word FICTION at all the third and fourth times. The third time, he said JUST NOT TRUE and the fourth time he tried the old “ANYONE WHO BELIEVES..trick.

He didn’t find a good ending to ANYONE WHO BELIEVES – all he could come up with is JUST DOESN”T UNDERSTAND, and OK?

Hillary Clinton would, YOU KNOW, say ANYONE WHO HAS (EXAMINED or some other word) and maybe LOOK

It is not true, really, what Rubio says. Not about all things, anyway.

Obama makes mistakes because of incompetence, too – his Syrian peace talks are an example of that, and so was of course, the technical failures of healthcare.gov in 2013.

And there are other situations where he doesn’t understand what is wrong with what he is doing – but he may understand that something is politically valuable to him, or he may think it is, and maybe doesn’t understand the whole issue really, but he doesn’t understand that what he is doing is wrong. Example: The minimum wage.

And in other cases he does understand something is no good – like with disapproving the Keystone pipeline. When that’s the case he does try to either limit the damage or comes upo with some reason for doing that. I am not sure what category his war on Louisiana charter schools belongs in.

In a lot of things, he’s half-hearted, in my opinion, and that may mean he recognizes that the policy is wrong. And/or it’s really being driven by lower ranking people, and he doesn’t understand it at all. But it can sound justified.

I think there are very few things taht he understands the consequences of it are bad, and goes ahead anyway. When he does he tried to limit it. Example: Reviews of alleged bad police killings. What he really should do is try to straighten people out. Instead, he arranges reviews, albeit he does not indict anyone unjustly.

  327. As MD in Philly would surely affirm and possibly expand upon, a drooping eyelid is called “ptosis,” which is a wonderful Scrabble word. I’ve had one for almost thirty years now, a sequela from a temporary and long-resolved neurological issue. It’s worse — that is, the discrepancy between left and right eyelid — when I’m tired.

  342. I’ve been playing online poker — Texas Hold’Em — during tonight’s debate. My $5000 initial table stake when I sat down, I’ve turned into $49,538.

    Play money, of course.

I may therefore have missed a few good exchanges. But I think tonight’s debate won’t hurt Cruz (whom I don’t expect to win in NH.

I think Trump has hurt himself in New Hampshire since the Iowa results, and tonight I think he hurt himself worse. But the kind of GOP voter who’s as delusional as Trump himself — the kind who can’t distinguish between seizing property to build a pipeline that will benefit the entire country, versus building a casino parking garage — will still vote for him. I will be surprised if that turns out to be as many as 20% of New Hampshire voters, and I don’t think Trump will end up in first place; if he does, it will, I predict, be a near-tie.

I think a lot of NH folks who might have ended up voting for Rubio if there’d been no debate tonight, might be having second thoughts. He hurt himself.

It’s likely to be a very, very fragmented vote. I think New Hampshire will almost certainly end Dr. Carson’s campaign; and I think it’s possible that Jeb might also recognize the inevitable — although he has the money to continue, which Carson doesn’t.

I think Rubio, Christie, Bush, and Kasich end up splitting the traditional NH Sununu-Republican vote. So the question becomes: How many others will show up — will there be the kind of turnout of Cruz voters that his campaign got in Iowa, for example? — and can they propel someone else, either Cruz or Trump, into first or second place? I think it might.

  344. Support for legal abortion in the U.S. has edged up to its highest level in the past two years, with an Associated Press-GfK poll showing an apparent increase in support among Democrats and Republicans alike over the last year.

While support for legal abortion edged up to 40 percent among Republicans in this month’s poll, from 35 percent in January, the survey found that the GOP remains deeply divided on the issue: Seven in 10 conservative Republicans said they want abortion to be illegal in most or all cases; six in 10 moderate and liberal Republicans said the opposite.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  351. I’m getting tired of all these excellent extemporaneous speakers such as Rubio, Cruz, and Fiorina. Jindal, too, although he got zero traction.

We need to revert back to the old days when we Republicans would pray that our World Class Public Speaking Champions such as Bush or Dole or McCain or Ford would even be capable of giving a somewhat rehearsed sounding answer on a debate stage in between all of their answers and statements that began and ended with, “Umm, and uh, well, you know, ummmm…” (LOL)

My droopy eyelid is left over from an episode of this, which felt like Athena had burst through my skull with her axe but wouldn’t go ahead and climb out; instead she just kept bashing my skull, for about two weeks. Then I got better. But my eyelid still blinks, and I always look like I have a concussion because one pupil’s smaller than the other. I doubt Rubio’s eyelid is anywhere nearly as significant, but again, perhaps someone with medical expertise can opine for us.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  354. oh that’s in the Althouse comments too

  356. The Washington Post transcript also has Marco Rubio talking about “the Girls Count Act.” Could that be, maybe “the Girl Scout Act?” (some kind of law he helped pass in Florida?)

Anyway, this is not tyeh way to answer the inexperience question. He basically arguing that experience or inexperience doesn’t mean very much. That may be more or less true, but it doesn’t mean that knows what he is doing is wrong. He can point out, or say, that after seven years Barack Obama isn’t so great, so that experience made somebody good, he’d be very good by now. Or does only the experience BEFORE somebody becomes president matter, and the pace of the presidency is too hectic to learn on the job? Maybe no amount o experience helps some people, and others need little or none.

He can say that a lot of what goes into good or bad decisions is general background, and judgement and you have ideological bias, and say that after seven years Barack Obama isn’t so great. That’s maybe worth repeating a third time. But you don’t say that Obama knows what he is doing is wrong – that if he is destroying the country, or its military, or its ability to fight wars, orits economy, it’s because that is exactly what he wants to do. That is, unless you see some real reason to think so.

  358. I’m not a Christie supporter, not by a longshot, but damn, I think he had the best night of this, or any 2016, debate. He really hammered Rubio, and Rubio going into infinite loop(y) mode just as Christie hammered him for mindlessly repeating himself… wow, talk about playing into the other guy’s hands. I suspect foul play – somebody must have tinkered with Rubio’s software.

    Governor Christie, thank you.

  364. Perhaps it’s time to start rumors, humans can’t function properly without talking sh!t…my rumor is that Elon Musk and Google own the robot we call Senator Rubio, unfortunately the Wi-Fi connection briefly failed and he went into safe mode which entailed repeating canned campaign rhetoric.

    pieter (ec44a2)

  368. JVW,
I enjoyed your link (way up the thread) about the messaging axiom which was integral to that old ‘Cheers’ episode about “Beer and pretzels,” “Beer and pretzels,” and “Beer and pretzels.”

But apparently messaging is bad in politics. I yearn for the old days when our not very telegenic (think Bush, Ford, McCain) GOP nominees couldn’t string four sentences together on the debate stage in front of the camera, much less repeat them again twenty minutes later. Those guys all won their elections, didn’t they? (LOL)

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  369. Abortion is back burner for most because it’s no longer yes-no but when. I’m pro life, but you’d be hard to convince me the first ten weeks is more than hopeful tissue. If otherwise, explain the common place nature of miscarriage. Let the states determine their collective conscience.

    pieter (ec44a2)

  373. Christie and his pro life shtick was a little over the top…there are limits to preserving human life- abortion, execution, war, etc. Only Democrats are allowed to believe in the mutually exclusive BS of killing the unborn after the first trimester and getting rid of state sanctioned execution.

Trump indicated he would not only bring back waterboarding but that he’d go medieval on ISIS, presumably this means actual torture like the rack and removing fingers and stuff. How does this play with the average voter wrt the temperament question? It seemed like a number of people were taken aback.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  384. Carly has bought time during the Super Bowl in NH.

    happyfeet (831175)

  385. Rubio’s challenge to the news media to ask the Dems about abortion and suggesting that Hillary would be OK with an abortion on delivery day what a high point for him. Anyone in NH who’s primarily moved by social issues had to like this.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  386. Yes, but her pitch probably won’t be promoting meg whitman.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  387. We shouldn’t nominate an intelligent telegenic guy like Rubio who speaks knowledgeably on foreign policy issues without hemming or hawing or getting his tongue tied.
Instead, we need a salt-of-the-earth, un-robotic, flawed-looking Jerry Ford to insist that there’s no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe. (Well, there was definitely no domination by Jerry Ford during that debate.)

Instead of nominating the ambitious, hungry (and thirsty! guffaw, guffaw!) son of a bartender and Motel 6 maid, we need to nominate an ambitious entitled Bush, who like President Daddy, might famously get caught on camera during a low-energy moment of a debate looking at his watch out of sheer boredom. We really need another McCain who refused to lower himself to actually debate his opponent during the debates. We need a George W. Bush, who when asked during a primary debate to name an influential political philosopher, replied, ‘Uhh, Jesus.’ (And that’s exactly what I yelled at the TV in response to his response—except I added the word, ‘Christ.’ LOL)

We need a Mitt Romney who when at the pivotal moment on the debate stage, famously became a shrinking violet in the presence of a woman named ‘Candy’ as she literally carried water for the President of the United States.

    That’s winning!

  390. Heh: “Christie Smokes A Cuban” – post-debate article up at the Daily Caller.

    Dana (86e864)

  391. Christie:

I’d like to ask all the veterans listening out there tonight, who are waiting in line for healthcare, who are literally dying because the Veterans Administration doesn’t work, do you think Barack Obama knows what he’s doing? I don’t.

But this is a Barack Obama who’s had seven years of experience as president! Christie, if elected, would also have seven yeasr of experience – but only as Governor.

Is it Christie’s contention that experience as Governor gives a person the experiece to know how to run things, but experience as president does not??

You could actually a case for that, incidentally. Maybe you need to learn gradually how to delegate effectively.

I’ll tell someone who didn’t have executtive experience: Richard Nixon. And the result was Watergate.

    Sammy Finkelman (dbec95)

  392. That Washington Post transcript has got have a dozen obvious mistakes I noticed. Donald Trump did not say CONVERSE but CONSERVE, every time. It’s EMINENT domain, not IMMINENT domain. The city where ISIS says there will be is not TIBET but Dabiq. In he previous debate Marco Rubio corrected his pronunciation because he said it sounded like he had Dubuque.

    Sammy Finkelman (dbec95)

  393. I admit that Rubio was uncharacteristically tongue-tied. I think that Christie spotted a habit and devised a way to knock him out of his tracks. Because boy did he. There was a moment when the Marco doll was on its side and kicking in circles on the floor.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  394. What gets me is just how little of a killer instinct Jeb Bush has. Every time Chris Christie talked about his hurricane (which, technically, was not a hurricane), I expected Jeb to say something like, “Oh, you had a HURRICANE? I have a FILE CABINET labeled “Hurricanes”. But no.
