Steve Lopez Error on Mass Shootings Corrected

It’s a tough job keeping these folks accurate, but that’s why we’re here.

That error by Steve Lopez regarding the number of mass killings in the U.S. has been corrected:

FOR THE RECORD

Mass shootings: In the Dec. 4 California section, a column about the San Bernardino shootings said the incident was the 355th multiple-death shooting in the country this year. It should have said San Bernardino was the 353rd mass shooting in the U.S. this year, not all of which involved deaths.

My original post on this was here. I’m confident this was not deliberate on his part, by the way. He explained to me by email that he misread a report about it, and I accept the explanation.

    Don’t assume malice when incompetence is an adequate explanation.

    When dealing with the media, however, we sometimes need to remember

    Just because you know they’re malicious, don’t forget that they’re also incompetent.

    Really, in this case, “incompetent” is much to harsh a judgement; the error was significant but easy to make, and professionally corrected. I just had to use that word to fit the quote. My apologies to Steve Lopez for the exaggeration.

  3. They have an agenda. “A child has been killed by a handgun every day this year.” Except that “child” means nineteen and under, and nine out of ten (or more) of the “children” were gangs shooting at each other.

  5. Lopez had a pretty good rep when he was in Philly.
    His book Third and Indiana was based 2 blocks from where I once practiced.
    I never read the book, but my friend the chaplain at the local hospital did and said he recognized some of the characters,
    He said the book was pretty realistic, but too positive.
