Breaking Story: Shootings in San Bernardino [UPDATED]

Filed under: General — JVW @ 12:24 pm

[guest post by JVW]

Hot Air is updating the story. As of 12:20 pm Pacific Time the reports are that 20 people have been shot. Some unconfirmed reports on Twitter are claiming that 12 are believed killed. A local television news station is also reporting that same number of deaths, and that police are looking for up to three white males dressed in military gear as suspects. [Edit: Cleaned up some clunky wording in my original post.]

Expect some very heated arguments in the coming days.

UPDATE: Bob Owens, the editor of Bearing Arms, is also providing updates on Twitter. He is apparently following the action on police scanners.

UPDATE 2: Predictably, the LA Dog Trainer already has an editorial up (and, no, I’m not going to link to those jackwaggons) excoriating everyone who thinks the Second Amendment is (1) a part of the Constitution and (2) applies to individual citizens and not the militia. They denounce the Heller decision, the NRA, gun manufactures, and pretty much everyone who doesn’t fully agree with Dianne Feinstein on this issue, and more or less drone on as if they were all auditioning for a guest column on the Huffington Post or Slate. I don’t recommend anyone bother reading it.

  1. Hot Air already included a Tweet from a HuffPo lefty who wants this to be all about Planned Parenthood. None of us looks forward to how Obama will capitalize on this incident.

  2. Interesting. Thanks narciso. I imagine there will be lots of developments like this over the next few hours.

  3. i’ve been afraid of this

climate change has hit San Bernardino very very hard

    especially at high tide

  5. If it turns out to be Muslims or Illegal Aliens then the Left won’t care.

But they creamed their pants when they heard about “three white males.”

I think they busted a nut right out of their nob.

Except of course for the general inveighing against our nation’s “culture of guns.”

… it must get worse for us as a people before it gets better. We still have too many people with their heads firmly buried in the sand or people whose only interest is undoing the USA — “fundamentally transforming it” that is.

The reverse could never by said of “the Right,” of course.

  14. The bias in reporting is stark. Any shooters/bombers are always GOP/Tea Party, even if later proven to be left wing nutjob Democrats.

Huffington beclowns itself by leaving up comments asking if the victims shot back at all. With what weapons you left wing bozos?????

    PCD (39058b)

  15. Gerald, he didn’t say that. But you can’t deny that if it turns out that these are Moslems and/or illegal immigrants many of us will make political hay of it.

    Milhouse (8489b1)

  16. With what weapons you left wing bozos?????

Is it a gun-free zone? Do you actually know that for a fact, or are you just assuming because it usually turns out to be one?

  17. Whoever it is, and without blaming anyone, Obama really needs to come out and be a peacemaker. No more scolding, no more disgust for the American people. I doubt if he has it in him, but he’s got to try.

  18. Whoever it is, and without blaming anyone, Obama really needs to come out and be a peacemaker.

I just checked out my window and I didn’t see any pigs flying, so I’m guessing that the President will slip into his usual mode of moral scold, chiding us backwater bitter-clingers for our inability to comport to his obviously superior moral code.

  19. #13 Q:Who is Rodney Ling, anyway?

That be Rodney King’s half chinese brother with a different father. Mom figured since the last name’s were different there was no need to be creative with the first name so make it the same.

I just don’t see where I misread Leviticus.

Whether conservatives make political hay out of it is a different question.

    Gerald A (949d7d)

  21. #16: Milhouse,

many of us will make political hay of it.

If a house is burning, and someone yells “Fire!”, is that hayworthy?

It wouldn’t surprise me if PP was on a jihadists list of suitable targets. I just did a search on “riyhad abortion clinics” and found two prospective hits. One was “abortionpilldoctor” and they promised discretion with their mailings to clients. The other was a clinic in India which is just a few hours by air to the east. But as to the imams’ views on abortion, I’m just guessing here.

Based on his remarkably insightful remarks in Paris, I’m sure if jihadists are found to be the culprits, Kerry will regard the attack as a legitimate, or at least rational, act.

  22. Listening to Shep Smith on Fox ignore the Faroquiiiiii name makes me sick.

Not the White Male Christians with the Tea Party you were fantasizing about.

It looks the same here — more religion of peace types.

    But we shall see …..

We can’t jump to conclusions because it does not suit the Left’s demented war on white male christian conservatives.

Like the Planned Parenthood or SC Shootings.

  24. I have a prediction.

Up to now, “swatting” has usually been false reports of some man killing his wife. Wasn’t that what was claimed about Patterico when he got swatted?

From now on, at last some swattings will be false claims of mass killings like is genuinely happening today.

    Milhouse (8489b1) — 12/2/2015 @ 1:27 pm

F*** you Milhouse. Some of spent a good chunk of our lives defending this country and we hate to see TFG in the WH destroy it.

Call that “making political hay” if you want. But after Pearl Harbor ADM Kimmel was relieved wasn’t he? In the Navy when a ship is lost in combat there’s a board of inquiry, and if the Captain is culpable then there’s going to be a court martial.

If this is what I think it is, then just as in those examples it’s the guy at the top who is toblame. I realize Prom Queen never takes the blame for anything, but he’s the one leaving the border unguarded, he was the one playing down the ISIS threat because it didn’t fit his reelection arrative according to LT GEN Flynn (Ret), former DIA commander. If CENTCOM J2 was cooking the intel to make everything look all rosy it’s because of Prom Queen, he’s the one who won’t attend his daily briefing, and he’s the one who apparently refuses to be briefed if he doesn’t consider a group to be a terrorist group even if it’s on an official US listing, and he just said hours before the Paris massacre that ISIS was contained.

I don’t know if he gave his testimony today, but the CJCS testified that ISIS is most definitely not contained.

I expect President never-let-a-crisis-go-to-waste to politicize this because he said after Oregon that he ought to politicize this. While I’m at it, f*** him, too.

But somebody correct me if I’m getting any details wrong so far.

    1. Target had had something like 600 developmentally disabled patients. Very hard to move. That would keep first responders tied up a good long while, wouldn’t it?

    2. The suspects clearly knew the building, ingress and egress.

    3. They moved very methodically.

    4. The GMC Yukon was not parked at the target but drove up as they were exiting.

    5. The shooters calmly got in, and the SUV drove away very calmly (later dumped).

    6. They kicked things off by shooting up a Christmas party. Anyone see any symbolism there?

It’s not political, Milhouse. The buck stops, and his time it’s got to really stop, with the commander of this ship. In this case, the CinC.

If this is what I suspect. I could be wrong. This was no group of crazed loners, though.

Enjoy your Christmas shopping season, folks. I hear there’s a cell of grinches in every state in the union.

I could be wrong. I hope I am. But if turns out to be ISIS then this time time somebody’s heads have got to roll. I mean symbolically, as in getting fired and if appropriate prosecuted.

Nobody ever gets fired in this administration no matter badly they screw up, how many veterans dies waiting for appointments at the VA or no matter how many state or Navajo reservation water supplies they pollute with mine wastewater or how many confidential records the Chinese steal because nobody will get off their @$$es and fix vulnerabilities that were identified years ago.

This time it will be different.

How’s that for playing politics, Milhouse?

    Steve57 (a13395)

  30. I’m listening to the radio and I’m hearing a lot of nonsense. Some people think it can’t be ISIS because the shooters didn’t stick around to commit suicide. Seriously? It’s stupid to think your enemy is going to do everything the same way every time.

How does anyone know it’s over yet? It’s still early in Kali. They could have secondary, tertiary, even more targets picked for today. Or they could wait for another day to collect their 72 virgins. Just because they didn’t wait for cops to show up and get in a shoot-out in San Bernardino doesn’t mean anything.

    Steve57 (a13395)

  31. #32

If it is an Atheist we will be told there is no war on Christmas and to be tolerant.

If it is a Moslem we will be told Islam is a religion of peace and to be tolerant.

If it is a GOP Voter we will be told all Conservatives are evil murderers.

    Rodney King's Spirit (ab8c0d)

  32. Let me jump to an admittedly unfounded but educated guess; these attackers are not done.

    Bugg (fa64ec)

  33. Has anyone present reported the gunmen where shouting Allahu Akbar?

    ropelight (896a6c)

  34. No reports of that, ropelight. But that doesn’t mean they didn’t.

If they remained silent it just means they want to deny the cops as many cues as possible. They left a lot of witnesses. If they remain silent no one knows what language they were speaking, or, if they were to speak in English they might have identifiable accents.

    Steve57 (a13395)

  35. About two hours agoe the news was reporting the police found an abandoned black GMC Yukon. It had been abandoned in Pasadena.

Now, I’m hearing that the San Bernardino PD have shot the h3ll out of a black SUV, that there’s a body lying next it, and the cops are searching the neighborhood.

Who the h3ll knows what’s going on? If they were still driving around in the get-away vehicle up until a few minutes ago then this wasn’t at all what it first appeared.

    Steve57 (a13395)

  36. Heat words in the coming days?

Go to social media whether its twitter or facecrack and the usual suspects of the left from Chucky Pierce and Bob Bates of Esquire are calling for the abolishment of the 2nd Amendment and that all the gun owners are terrorists. On over to all the rest of the print media from the Atlantic to the WaPo, LAT, NYT, etc that are just talking about how evil the NRA is, Wayne La Pierre has blood on his hands and that this is now the “new America” where its more dangerous here than in Aeppo Syria.

    Charles (174c38)

  37. 3 anonymous shooters who execute mass carnage and escape sound like bought and paid for mercenaries.
    Cui bono?

  41. The reverse could never by said of “the Right,” of course. — Leviticus (f9a067)

Well, I’ll be honest. If a sickening, bloody act of violence involves liberal whites, or liberal blacks, or liberal Latinos, or liberal Asians, or liberals males, or liberal females, or liberal Jews, or liberal Christians, or liberal Muslims, or liberal GLBTers, or liberal straights, etc — or any group that pings the hearts of many on the left (as has been the case with a good portion of the notorious instigators of murderous rampages — or the types who the left loves to sympathize with — during just the past 10 years), while I don’t bust a nut (as Rodney characterized the response of many on the left), I am reminded of studies that show a good percentage of liberals (compared with conservatives) exhibit traits that are just the opposite of true compassion, true generosity, true tolerance.

And then I go “hmm” and snicker.

    Mark (74fce8)

  42. Is it a gun-free zone? Do you actually know that for a fact, or are you just assuming because it usually turns out to be one? — Milhouse (8489b1)

Another reason, Milhouse, why you shouldn’t claim or imply you don’t have more than a bit of liberal bias, and why I’m not imagining that particular trait (which is underwhelming to me—certainly if it involves a person who is well past his teenage or college years) based on at least some of your posts.

    Mark (74fce8)

  43. This certainly wasn’t at all what it appeared. And I’m glad it wasn’t. But it’s still very curious.

    This is up at Drudge:

    http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-san-bernardino-shooting-dramatic-video-shows-police-storming-inland-regional-center-20151202-story.html

At first, Dorothy Vong assumed it was a drill — just like all the others at her work.

At the Inland Regional Center, where she’s a nurse, the staff works with clients and parents of clients who are sometimes angry. They have active-shooter drills every month or so.

“Drill started,” she texted her husband, Mark, around 11 a.m.

She walked to a window nearby and filmed a video as law enforcement sprinted toward the building.

“Oh, that is scary,” a voice says calmly in the background.

“They’re all geared up!” someone else says. “Rifles and everything!”

In the background, someone laughs — they still didn’t know.

    Then the reality set in.

She texted her husband again: “Well it’s real.”

…Mark Vong said he told his wife to stay calm and not to panic.

“They train for this,” he said, standing outside a police barricade Wednesday afternoon. “They know it’s going to happen.”…

They know it’s going to happen?

There’s lots of places where the clients and their parents are sometimes angry. But I’ve never heard of a place that has active shooter drills every month or so.

    Steve57 (a13395)

  44. HCF’s here in #Failifornia are all #GunFreeZones, because that makes them safe from violence.

if you’re lucky, and it’s a government facility, you *might* have a couple armed security types somewhere on campus, but nothing suitable for repelling a coordinated attack by people bent on violence. they’re only there for the random unhappy person, not this sort of thing.

    redc1c4 (51aab8)

  45. I also heard that you need an e-card to get in the door of the place, but maybe it was left open for people coming to the party? As to targeting…I don’t know. Maybe the building, but they could have headed for the sound of all those voices.

I wonder if the Saeed Farook tip is for real, but it could be a revenge/jihad thing if he was a disgruntled employee.

JVW, I know it was a fantastical thought, LOL. A scorpion gotta be a scorpion.

  46. Doesn’t Cal State U have a sizable Arabic Studies Program in San Bernadino?

    Rodney King's Spirit (ab8c0d)

  47. By “places” I meant places where they work with the developmentally disabled. Such as those with autism, Down’s syndrome, mental retardation, etc.

Does anybody know what kind of place this Inland Regional Center is? Because it’s the only place that works with the developmentally disabled I’ve ever heard of that has active shooter drills every month.

    Steve57 (a13395)

  48. Enjoy your Christmas shopping season, folks

    no one’s shopping anyway…

and if we do, it’ll be at a gun store or on line.

    redc1c4 (51aab8)

  49. The LATimes, yes I know not considered reliable, has an ongoing updated story

Currently there is a story that there was an argument at a party using the space but not affiliated with the facility, and that someone left the party mad and came back armed, perhaps with an accomplice or two.

Perhaps there is an Islamic jihadist component,
maybe a work place violence incident or a Hassan work place violence incident.

Maybe we need to wait, and hope we hear some truth along the way

MD in Philly (not in Philly at the moment) (deca84)

  50. I also heard that you need an e-card to get in the door of the place…

glass doors aren’t bullet proof… nor are the windows next to them.

a round or two and you’re inside.

    redc1c4 (51aab8)

  51. #49: got mad & came back loaded for bear, pipe bombs and all?

the Slimes is likely just making stuff up, so they don’t have to take the terror angle seriously.

    redc1c4 (51aab8)

  52. Currently there is a story that there was an argument at a party using the space but not affiliated with the facility, and that someone left the party mad and came back armed, perhaps with an accomplice or two.

As somebody on Twitter put it, who the hell has friends that they can enlist on the spur of the moment to go shoot up a social services center? It certainly sounds like people who are predisposed to mass violence.

    JVW (d60453)

  53. #49, #51, if this report is true (and who knows, at this point), it could be that someone at the event made sure that the intended target was there before beginning the assault. But until more facts become public what this is about is going to remain unclear.

    Katherine (f9c276)

  54. Agree that best to wait for more facts,
yes, it sounds like not the “usual” disgruntled employee out for personal revenge

but it does sound like an odd target if no personal issue involved, and if there was an individual target, again, why such a setting

    who knows,

but the twitter feed by Owens seems very helpful, including pictures of an escape car riddled with holes,
something somewhere about a helicopter armed with an M-4
i have no idea, just passing it on

MD in Philly (not in Philly at the moment) (deca84)

  55. @44

Actually, there are a number of places that are taking on “active shooter drills” or “anti-terrorism drills” and making them mandatory for all of the staff and management to participate in. Yes, some of them are becoming monthly events, like fire drills. Simply because in some cases the cities, businesses or other entity; they can prove they are reducing the potential insurance risks by having people trained what to do if something goes down the people know what to do.

    Charles (174c38)

  56. Charles, I believe public entities, from school boards to agencies of the Federal leviathan, are “self insured”, meaning those few of us who still pay taxes are on the hook for all their misadventures. Their “drills” are simply to reinforce the propaganda that substitutes for effective policies.

    BobStewartatHome (a52abe)

  57. Charles, the fire dept. generally doesn’t show up and conduct those monthly fire drills. Usually it’s just the employees practicing to evacuate the building.

At this place it’s the San Bernardino PD that gears up and does the monthly active shooter drills. And it’s the staff and management just sitting around watching them.

    Steve57 (a13395)

  58. 53. Currently there is a story that there was an argument at a party using the space but not affiliated with the facility, and that someone left the party mad and came back armed, perhaps with an accomplice or two.

And who has friends who not only up for that at the spur of the moment, but have their ski masks, BDUs, and body armor ready to go?

At this point, I know, it’s ridiculous for me to expect that the LHMFM got even those basic facts correct.

  64. So white males with Muslim names.

Here’s the skinny on the source of all these migrants, Crack Whore is behind that as well:

    http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-12-02/russia-presents-detailed-evidence-isis-turkey-oil-trade

Here a Nebraskan ships the oil via his railways, Erdogan has only dirt roads but plainly the US is fighting a proxy war with ISIS, is starting another WW in Europe with ISIS, and will declare martial law here by means of ISIS.

    DNF (755a85)

  65. We know Obama will call for more gun control but this is looking like international terrorism. I don’t think Obama can blame a video so will we see him blaming insensitive Americans for having a Christmas party at government expense?

    DRJ (15874d)

  66. there must’ve been a lot of people there what didn’t believe in the second amendment just like the la times

many of them are dead now or in the hospital

i believe a lot in the second amendment and I had a tasty sammich and we had firecakes donuts again today

tomorrow i’m gonna believe in the second amendment some more and knock out some christmas shopping and make some tea (pu-erh) so i need to stop and get some half n half at the cvs on my way in to work

    guns! love em!

    happyfeet (831175)

  67. We don’t know much, but we know enough that this involved organized planned shooters, likely Arabic ones. But the “party’ story sounds really implausible. Nobody shows up to a Christmas party, gets a tad displeased (lack of pigs in a blanket perhaps? no buffalo chicken dip?warm beer?) and THEN goes and gets 2 heavy-armed tactically-dresses pals to shoot up the place 10 seconds later, leaving in an organized fashion. That could be the most ridiculous thing the MFM has ever tried to sell. Which given how The One glided into office is saying something. Simply these BASTARDS will do ANYTHING to not say IT’S ISLAMIC TERRORISTS.

    Bugg (fa64ec)

  68. I don’t think Obama can blame a video so will we see him blaming insensitive Americans for having a Christmas party at government expense?

Should we award a prize to whomever discovers the first lefty who tries to blame this on the House vote against Obama’s plans to bring in Syrian refugees?

    JVW (d60453)

  69. Well, the police are saying there was an argument and someone left, but they cannot say whether that person was involved in those who came in the attack.

As pointed out, even if it was the same person coming back with associates, it clearly wasn’t an unplanned attack by a disgruntled employee and friends.

It may have been a planned thing by an employee that was there earlier, and that was involved in why that was the site for the attack, as opposed to somewhere else.

Why plan an attack at a Christmas party of county mental health workers at a specific site unless there was a personal contact,

The “party” line came from the fact that on the Facebook page or some other social media site there was a holiday party video and photos of the residents at this location. However, it also has for rent conference rooms and currently some of the media is reporting that there wasn’t so much a party, but rather a meeting of a government board (media is conflicting about whether its a PTA like meeting, some committee of the city council or some other council of government like environmental health sort of meeting). At which the attack begun in this meeting point and not in the actual residency portion of the building. However, just like the nutter who shot up CO Springs neighborhood. The investigation wasn’t done, but because he hid out in Planned Parenthood building, then he was targeting abortion providers. The reality might be completely different, doesn’t matter anymore. The “truth” has been established that he was hunting abortion providers and the patients of said providers.
So the “truth” here will be that it wasn’t terrorism (even if will be ruled that later) but instead it will be some nutter who tried to killed and in later printings of the history books did kill some disabled folks. That is the way it works now.

That would be Posse Commitatus Act (or Pussy Communists for those of you from LA or any place south of the Mason-Dixie Line) that prevents the DoD from doing Law Enforcement on the US or its territories unless the President (or someone else in the National Command Authority if the POTUS can’t be found) authorizes it. So the US Army was in Ft. Irwin and the Marines were in Miramar and 29 Palms and did nothing but watch this from the news. The US Law Enforcement is radically different than most of the rest of the world. We don’t have a federal army unit that also acts as domestic police with super jurisdictional powers, like what the UK, France, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Italy, Germany, Israel or any number of other nations do.

One indication of just how sickeningly “leftie” our leader probably is (or is, period) compared with even the socialist/leftist president of France, is that if a US city ever experienced the same bloodshed that Paris went through recently, Barry Obama, unlike Francois Hollande, would clumsily and grotesquely politicize the whole thing and, worse of all, struggle not to proclaim that the US had it coming. nk (dbc370) — 12/2/2015 @ 11:28 pm

Indeed they did not. My first thought was that if this was terrorism, the terrorists chose the target because it was full of patients who would be difficult to evacuate. They would be more useful alive, sort of like filling the roads with refugees would delay the arrival of opposing force. The terrorists could move on to a secondary target while the police and other first responders were still evacuating and clearing the first. Shoot and scoot.

    Steve57 (a13395)

  135. Although all the witnesses say there were three shooters, the authorities sound like they are almost ready to say it was done by only two people involved. The public release of information has been pretty bad.

If what Steve57 said above is correct, and the car in which they drove away was not parked there but driven there by another person, that makes at least four, and since there is no record, as Powerline blog says, of a mixed gender assault team (that would probably be somewhat un-Islamic and in any case unusual, although not impossible) the woman killed with Syed Farook, who turns out to be his wife, may not have been part of the assault team, and that leaves 3 men on the loose, maybe all three who took part in the assault. (The 3rd man arrested has now been released – he’s considered not involved.)

You know they were saying in the late afternoon that possibly one was arrested and one was “down” – they were treating the SUV like it might be boobytrapped, or at least have loose explosives in theer. The police were clearly not wary of someone in the car, though. There wass something on the ground that the helicopter couldnt see. Now hey say two dead people, a man and a woman = Syed and his wife.

It doesn’t sound like the suspicious house with men coming and going is the same house where Farouk lived with his wife, baby and mother. And it’s also not the getway car – maybe.

Farook was identified as a result of a tip – not clear where that tip came from – and the only thing known is that he had an argument there and he left.

He may even have been part of he conspiracy – and yet not part of the 3-person assault team.

It’s not clear what the argument was about – it ould have been staged.

One thing that occurs to me is: If he knew what was coming and had let some people in, he might want to ger out of there but have a good excuse for leaving. Ot maybe he might have been the driver of the getaway car. In that case, sine he couldn’t know exactly when it would end, he must have been in telephone (cellphone) contact, probably via text with one or more of the killers.

It looks like Islamic terrorism and perhaps even what ISIS was claiming it was going to do – in which case this would actually be a minor plot, while there are other plots in the works. You can think of other possibilities – non-ISIS jihadists, an unaffiliated group, or people against vaccinations, but a very elaborate plot related to ISIS seems to be the best idea.

The workspace connection would be more because it was ready at hand and available than because someone thought this was the best target.

By the way, this was a “Holiday Party” and not a Christmas party – after all this was December 2nd.

No way was this a spontaneous decision, altough it is possible something caused someone to jump the gun. A very elaborate plot with some elements of a cover-up in place seems to be the best idea, and
and the cover-up may be working. The cell has not been busted, but if the authorities act like it has, the cover-up is working. Syed Farook may even have been selected as the fall guy.

    Sammy Finkelman (4d9cfa)

  136. On the other hand the Daily News says (in an artivle written before the second person was identified as a woman) that both people pulled from the car were wearing assault style clothes. so that could make the part of the initial team.

What was though unusual about the car is that it was within a mile of the attack, and yet it was 3 or 4 hours later. But Syed lived around there?

    Sammy Finkelman (4d9cfa)

  137. The names have changed:

The mass murderers — a couple identified as Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 27,— were gunned down four hours later and 2 miles away when police pumped a fusillade of bullets into their fleeing SUV on a quiet residential San Bernardino street.

Cops said Farook and Malik were either married or dating.

Really, DRJ? I doubt it because the leftists have instilled political correctness so well people (other than myself) are afraid to call it for what it is. Like this guy who watched some unusual activity but didn’t want to be called racist.

A man who has been working in the area said he noticed a half-dozen Middle Eastern men in the area in recent weeks, but decided not to report anything since he did not wish to racially profile those people.

“We sat around lunch thinking, ‘What were they doing around the neighborhood?’” he said. “We’d see them leave where they’re raiding the apartment.”

if there really was a white “christian” sect that advocated violent overthrow of the government and random acts of violence to terrorize I would be happy to have them monitored as well.

The logical conclusion from dumbass Perry is they’re Teaparty’ers and NRA members. That’s how incapable he and his ilk are of taking logic to it’s conclusion. Moslem names + bombs + Saudi = NRA to this deluded putz. And if you look around the internet all the leftists are spouting the same crap. It’s like they are programmed. Or mentally ill. Or both.

    Rev. Barack Hussein Hoagie™ (f4eb27)

  149. I had a neighbor that was looking suspicious. It was a house that I passed walking the dog and we saw a lot of women in burkhas and multiple cars parked there as though there was a meeting. My daughter is an FBI agent and we told her about it. She said they checked on the address and nothing came of it. Too bad those neighbors were afraid to report their suspicions.

The Flying Imams and possibly the “Clock Boy” incident might have been planned to discourage reporting suspicions. Certainly, the medical staff at Fort Hood had plenty of warning about Major Hassan and did nothing, probably due to the influence of senior generals like Casey who said “The worst thing that could result is a change in the Army’s Diversity.”

    Mike K (90dfdc)

  150. The LA Times and many other liberal news media, websites, and pundits are framing this as another in a long line of gun crimes: “355 mass shootings in 2015” — says the Washington Post.

WaPo cites the Guns Are Cool website that defines mass shootings as 4 or more people shot in one event (as opposed to the FBI definition of 4 or more murdered). This definition includes terrorism but also personal disputes, gang, domestic, and police shootings.

That’s part of why The Atlantic calls guns “America’s top killing machine,” because it is estimated that guns will kill more than cars this year. I wonder how many lives guns would have saved in the hands of the innocent victims at that holiday party?

    DRJ (15874d)

  151. I have an acquaintance/friend of my sons who is in Homeland Security, having been an air marshal at one point. He said “of course” the flying Imams was some sort of dry run, and “it happens all of the time”, as if there was enough surveillance going on to keep an eye on folks to see when it went from thinking to acting.

I saw a blurb (but didn’t read it and now lost it) about some recent grad of that school in Texas who is Muslim and wrote with accolades as to how well she was treated in that school, that there was no “Islamophobia”, and if someone had raised suspicion they had earned it.

I don’t think being alert to unusual activities especially by those who fit the profile of “terrorist” is denouncing anybody, nk. Why is it that if this were 1943 and the house next door had Nazi flags nailed on the walls and guys goose stepping around the property calling the FBI would be okay but the murdering moslems are somehow hands-off because Freedom of Religion? F of R only works when it’s a real religion not a political dictatorship hiding as one.

    Rev. Barack Hussein Hoagie™ (f4eb27)

  154. Now that this has happened in America, I think most people have a survival instinct and will worry when they see suspicious activity and/or groups of Arabs/Muslims. I think this is especially true if thsee shooter wrren’t on any watchlists. Of course, some people won’t do anything and some won’t be concerned, but some will.

I think another reason people won’t do anything is if they don’t trust government or law enforcement to do anything about it. I have my doubts about the DOJ, Homeland Security, ICE, etc.

Consider the possibility Syed Farook was curious about jihad and began to look online for information and in the process was exposed to extreme ideas about the religious responsibilities of young Moslim men. He began to meet and associate with like minded Moslims here. Over time as he became more and more radicalized he was identified as eligible to import a trained jihadi into the US and encouraged to do so.

He goes to Saudi Arabia to marry the trained terrorist he’s been introduced to online, and brings her home to California. She instructs him in tactics and techniques of mass murder and they go on to worship their god in the way he finds most pleasing and to collect their reward for strict adherence to the most sacred tenets of Islam.

Doesn’t that seem like a more accurate definition? I mean, if I got shot and survive, I was still shot, right? So why should it be different for a group of 4 or more? And why should the motive matter when it comes to measuring the number of incidents?

    Leviticus (dfc5ce)

  175. Leviticus,

I don’t have a problem with including people who are shot rather than murdered. However, that website is crowd-sourced and is not based on FBI or other official statistics, so there is a possibility of errors. My main concern is that I don’t think it’s helpful to compare domestic violence incidents, gang shootings, and bar fights with (as this seems to be) terrorism. The victims are all dead or hurt but the similarities end there, and why just care about guns?

I think it makes more sense to look at the causes and solutions for each group. Dealing with domestic violence incidents seems completely different to me than dealing with gang shootings or terror attacks, whether they are by gun or knife or whatever.

The left opened the doors of the mental wards, the media chooses to facilitate the celebrity status that is then given to the mentally ill attention seekers, a large faction of our society bathes itself in a smelly sewer of grievance and perceived victimhood and the rest of us can’t seem to put a stop to this via a national reality check.

And we’ve allowed a sizable number of people inside our borders who should’ve been stopped at the other end. We’ve asked to be “proper F’d” and we are reaping the whirlwind, so to speak.

Beyond that, handguns weren’t necessarily any less plentiful decades ago when all the violent behavior of deranged people witnessed during the past few years or decades wasn’t quite so common. Along with that, and if anything, restrictions on guns are greater today than in the past, while social-political restrictions on “do your own thang,” “if it feels good, do it!” and “gangsta-rap behavior is hip and cool!” are much lower, if not non-existent.

    Leviticus (dfc5ce) — 12/3/2015 @ 10:26 am

Leviticus, it isn’t like these things don’t happen in other developed societies. This article looks at other OECD countries and, I believe, is the latest data for OECD countries.

    http://www.ijreview.com/2015/06/348197-obama-said-mass-shootings-dont-happen-in-advanced-countries-like-in-us-one-chart-proves-him-wrong/

Security Magazine commented on the data findings:

Between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2013,there were 413 fatalities from mass shootings in the 34 member states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). From the five-year period of 2008-2012, there were 373 total spree shooting fatalities.

According to the OECD’s latest version of the Rampage Shooting Index, a pair of deadly shootings in Switzerland in early 2013 pushed the U.S. out of the top five OECD nations for the most per capita fatalities, but the U.S. continues to have the most rampage shooting deaths (one reason could be its size – The U.S. population accounts for 25 percent of the OECD total). However, the U.S. saw a drop in mass shooting deaths from 93 in 2012 to 68 in 2013.

The U.S.’ index of 0.12 per 5,000,000 places it behind Norway (recall the Anders Breivik massacre), Finland, Slovakia, Israel, and Switzerland – at half the ratio…

If you just compare total shooting deaths then, of course, the US has far and away the most total fatalities from mass shootings. But as the article points out there are 34 member countries of the OECD. And the US has 25% of the total population of the entire combined member population.

This year on a per capita basis France will undoubtedly rank higher than the US, which is a competition we don’t want to win.

Also, r.e. your earlier assertion that it makes more sense to count you as a statistic if you get shot and survive, actually it doesn’t. If you get shot and survive no one is going to do an autopsy on you to figure out exactly what happened. It’s not always clear-cut if you’re wounded whether you were shot or were injured by something incidental to the shooting. Perhaps you didn’t stop the bullet, it passed through and through. Hate to tell you but it might be a cops bullet, who knows? Just be thankful you didn’t stop it.

There are just too many variables. The bottom line is if you’re injured then the priority is saving your life, not gathering evidence. There are several reasons why the FBI’s definition of a mass shooting begins and ends with those killed in the shooting.

  193. Leviticus:

But what in the hell is wrong with us as a society, that this keeps happening?

I don’t know. I’m sure there are a number of reasons but let me offer one as an example: It could be something as simple as the fact that the media covers every incident and it gives people ideas.

I’m not being flippant. When I was in college in the 1970’s, the local and college papers deliberately did not publish stories regarding the many, many student suicides — even if they occurred in public — because they had learned doing so resulted in copycats. I found this out after witnessing someone jump off a building on campus and wondering why there was nothing in the local or college papers. Even way back then, the media choose not to publish these suicides because they had learned that reading about a student’s suicide was suggestive enough to make others copy it.

So maybe the cost of being informed about these incidents is that some people will, for various reasons, view them as good ideas instead of things to avoid.

    DRJ (15874d)

  194. Unlike my college years, I don’t want the media to protect us from this. I want to know.

  203. that was just my excuse to post a Diana pic from the 80s,

Hillary! is capable of swallowing mammals as large as a black-tailed jack rabbit whole. When she does, she coughs up the inedible parts, the fur, bones, claws, etc., back up in a compact unit the size of a quail’s egg.

If you find a number of these under a tree this is your greatest clues to determine Hillary!’s favorite perch, and perhaps could lead you to discover her leaf-covered larder of prey, which has been known to draw her out of cover and it is advised one carry a slug-loaded 10 gauge shotgun just in case.

Even a slight clawing can prove fatal if untreated, given the nearly seven decades worth of rotten flesh under her nails.
