University Cancels Yoga Class Because of the Oppression

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:51 am

Washington Post (not the Onion): University yoga class canceled because of ‘oppression, cultural genocide’:

In studios across the nation, as many as 20 million Americans practice yoga every day. Few worry that their downward dogs or warrior poses disrespect other cultures.

But yoga comes from India, once a British colony. And now, at one Canadian university, a yoga class designed to include disabled students has been canceled after concerns the practice was taken from a culture that “experienced oppression, cultural genocide and diasporas due to colonialism and western supremacy,” according to the group that once sponsored it.

In a telephone interview with The Washington Post, Jennifer Scharf, who taught the class for up to 60 people at the University of Ottawa, said she was unhappy about the decision, but accepted it.

“This particular class was intro to beginners’ yoga because I’m very sensitive to this issue,” she said. “I would never want anyone to think I was making some sort of spiritual claim other than the pure joy of being human that belongs to everyone free of religion.”

Those crazy Canadians. Nothing like that could ever happen at the bastions of sanity that are universities in the United States.

  1. this is not good enough

this filthy Jennifer Scharf should resign in shame for how she defiled and appropriated the Yoga culture and if she does not resign she should be fired and blacklisted so she never works at an university again

this is not the sort of person who should be around small children!

  5. The English were also guilty of imposing the Western white man’s values, suppressing the practice of suttee. I wonder if the SJW’s in our midst think they want that back.

  8. The British brought modern sanitation to India. I wonder if that too is considered colonial oppression and if Indian students who are so sensitive about this have gone back to urinating and defecating in the streets.

Actually I have never met an Indian who serves as a foot solder in the Crybully Wars, let alone one who is a commanding officer. In my experience they are generally too busy excelling at academics. From the WaPo article in the link it sounds like this beastly cultural appropriation was uncovered by some committee of namby-pambies during a general review of extracurricular offerings.

Jennifer Scharf is cute and she seems to be taking this in stride.

Oy vey! I remember going to a big party years ago where the friends of a woman in a wheelchair were trying to get everyone to stop dancing because it upset her. I tried my best to encourage them to let people have fun, and help her find a way to have fun, but she wouldn’t budge and they wouldn’t stop, so I left the party.
No one is mocking yoga, and I seriously doubt if their is one single yoga master in India upset that yoga is being done around the world, probably quite the opposite. Up til now, the people most upset about yoga were Krazy Kristians fearful of its demonic influence. But now the PC crowd has to get into the act. I hope this idea falls flatter than a good corpse pose.
