Kerry: Charlie Hebdo Killings Perhaps “Legitimate” — OK, Maybe Not Legitimate But You Know What I Mean

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 5:05 am

He means “legitimate”:

Secretary of State John Kerry suggested on Tuesday that there was a “rationale” for the assault on satirical French weekly Charlie Hebdo, unlike the more recent attacks in Paris.

“There’s something different about what happened from Charlie Hebdo, and I think everybody would feel that,” Kerry said in Paris, according to a transcript of his remarks. “There was a sort of particularized focus and perhaps even a legitimacy in terms of — not a legitimacy, but a rationale that you could attach yourself to somehow and say, OK, they’re really angry because of this and that.”

Responding to bombings with violence is crazy, but targeting cartoonists for death because they insulted your prophet? Hey, that’s legit. Well, not legit, exactly. But we get it, man.

So says the country’s top diplomat.

How soon can we get these people out of there?

  2. I am amazed they put such idiocy in writing. If I said something so stupid, I would not want anyone to know. It shows how dumb kerry is.

  3. When you give legitimacy to the PLO and its offshoots, it is only a short stone throw to giving legitimacy to ‘Hebdo’ type attacks.

  4. I had the misfortune to see some of Kerry’s speech, and the guy is so in love with his own voice that you could sense that tingles that went up and down his leg as he emoted with great gravitas over the distinction between Charlie Hebdo and this most recent attack. Let us hope that this caps his illustrious “career”, but the reality is that he has 14 months to plunge to even greater depths. Indeed there’s a “climate change” conference coming up, which may present him with another opportunity to embarrass the U. S. before a different audience.

    Oscar if not Nobel.

  6. I thought nothing could plumb the depths of flaccid inanity like John Kerry and James Taylor in Paris. Then Kerry goes solo. What a moronic twit.

…the guy is so in love with his own voice that you could sense that tingles that went up and down his leg as he emoted with great gravitas over the distinction between Charlie Hebdo and this most recent attack.

Or as John would have said back in his Winter Soldier days: “Heavy, man.”

  8. Post6: Those two sentences captures the essence of Mr. Kerry as Secretary Of State. Moreover, “smart power” being replaced by a “moronic twit,” is “flaccid inanity” in spades.

  9. And a video kind of sounded like a plausible motive in Benghazi. And if not that, maybe the killing of al-Libbi. And if not that, the fact that it was September 11th.

But in Paris, November 13, 2015, – no special, limited, motive!

And the people attacked weren’t even Jewish! They weren’t all Christian! Or secular humanists! Or Shiites. It wasn’t even that they were French. Or in Paris. It was really an attack against all of humanity and its values!

Well, Kerry might concede, all of humanity except those belonging to or allied with Daesh.

Note: Kerry has been using Daesh instead of ISIL since December 2014. He evidently has a special dispensation from President Obama to do that.

  10. This is why I think Kerry would make a perfect ambassador to Antarctica.
I don’t think we have an embassy in Antarctica yet, though, so we’d have to send him with some plywood & scotch tape to get things started.

About 428 days. Although, given your reasonable anger, other methods to speed up the process might be legitimate rational.

  13. Kerry and Obama could be the greatest exacta of arrogant stupidity in the country’s history. Add in Biden and it’s scary as hell. None of them should be trusted with as much as a coffee order.

  15. The thing is John F’n Kerry can’t walk back the fact he thinks the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack was legitimate. Because of this:

“There’s something different about what happened from Charlie Hebdo, and I think everybody would feel that,”

If he hadn’t said exactly what he meant, that the attack on Charlie Hebdo was legitimate and the attack last Friday wasn’t, what else could possibly be different?

It’s almost funny. The craven multiculturalists in Europe think that all we need to do is educate these Muslim migrants about “Western values” such as not raping women simply because they’re white and not wearing a veil and they’ll get on board with the program and become good Germans or Swedes and obediently support the welfare state by getting jobs at the Volkswagen and Volvo factory.

As an aside, to illustrate the insanity, in one of the tiny German villages that Merkel is overwhelming with 10 times the local population worth of refugees, one of the locals welcomed the newcomers because they would, he said, rejuvenate the village. He said, “What is a village without a church and a school and a pub?” Apparently the locals couldn’t keep those places afloat.

I’m thinking, “Yeah, right Hans. The Muslims are going to really keep that church and that pub alive.”

But back to our SecState; why should these Muslims respect “western values” when people like John F’n Kerry are conceding that the very principles on which Western Civilization are based such as freedom of speech aren’t worth defending. But somehow messing with trivialities such as going to metal concert or a soccer game is beyond the pale.

It is precisely because morons and buffoons like Obama and Kerry represent the US, and therefore in the eyes of the Muslim world the West in general, that terror groups like AQ and ISIS have decided there’s nothing about Western Civilization worthy of respect.

Because if we ourselves respected Western Civilization, and had any respect for ourselves, we’d never sink so low as to let these fools anywhere near a position of authority. So if we elect a leader whose first act is to run off to Cairo and grovel and to have a chief diplomat who is also embarrassed by the whole Western Civ thing, why shouldn’t they think it’s time to destroy this house of cards?
