SJWs Claim Another Scalp

Filed under: General — JVW @ 3:30 pm

[guest post by JVW, who is hooked on microaggressive headlines]

The president of Claremont McKenna College’s junior class appeared in a Halloween picture with two girls dressed in ponchos, sombreros, and fake mustaches, so naturally the college’s Dean of Students resigned from her job today.

Huh?

Well, this is actually apparently a conflation of a couple of separate but related incidents. The student, whom I won’t name because I don’t think her offense rises to the level of a crime against humanity, resigned her student government office earlier this week. Note that she didn’t wear a “culturally offensive” costume, she merely posed for a picture with two friends who did. If only these delicate sensibilities applied to Barack Obama’s relationship with Bill Ayres and Bernadette Dohrn.

Apparently Claremont McKenna has been a battlefield in the Enforced Tolerance Wars. Powerline published the tediously long grievance email message that a coalition of minority student groups had presented to the entire campus community. [I seriously challenge any Patterico’s Pontifications reader to slog through that prolix compendium of whiny claptrap. I’ll bet you can’t do it; I had to start skimming about one quarter in.] They accused the administration, personified in Dean of Students Mary Spellman, of not reacting forcibly enough to their grievances, with the Halloween photo apparently being the straw that broke the camel’s back. And to draw attention to their plight two students commenced upon — yes, you guessed it! — a hunger strike. Rather than playing out the string, Dean Spellman resigned earlier this afternoon.

It seems the only remaining question is which feckless cowering administrator will be next to fall upon his or her sword. I think we’re about to find out if the snake really can devour itself.

  1. How much longer can this really go on? At what point do more mainstream liberal politicians see how this is ripping apart their coalition and step in to put a stop to it?

  9. It is clearly RACIST to say “the straw that broke the camel’s back” since camels are from somewhere where people are not dead, white European males. You have appropriated another culture as well. And I bet you had a MALE camel in mind when you wrote the offensive, racist phrase so you are clearly applying your heteronormative, patriarchal privilege in a oppressive manner (as if there were any other manner to apply your heteronormative, patriarchal privilege).

    You are hereby DENOUNCED!

Even Hillary can’t stop it. The only persons who might be able to speak out without being destroyed are Obama, Biden and Warren, but I doubt they want to. Destroying society as it is now so they can “save” it is the goal.

  13. I took the Patterico challenge.

I think I would object to a professor calling a student a “cockroach” even if said student was demonstrating on behalf of Hamas at the time.

They are also complaining that the Financial Aid Office is behaving like a Financial Aid Office.

And mixed in to their chronology is evidence that the university made them a promise, and then embarked on a course of weaseling out from under that promise. Since the original promise should not have been made, that one is a problem the university created for itself.

But going through the rest, I think I see a number of students and faculty who are resisting the agenda of the Left, but feel compelled to do it anonymously. Hence the vandalized posters, etc.

I’m shocked, JVW, to see the careless words used in your post title! “Another scalp”??? How many Native Americans has your insensitive white patriarchal semantic imperialism hurt by one post title?? I bury my heart at Patterico’s… because, obviously, there is no safe place anywhere!

  19. The Claremont Colleges are advertised as “Liberal Arts” but Harvey Mudd is science and engineering. Wake me when there is a demonstration there. Those students are studying or in the library.

  20. You know all those precocious internet troll kiddies that we’ve had to deal with all these years?

They’ve now at college and are behaving the same way in public as they did online. They’ve learned no one will punch them in the nose as they so desperately deserve, so they are escalating.

    And everyone is feeding them.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  21. Proof? Have we seen Perry lately?

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  22. Mike,

Back in the day when I was at Mudd there were widespread demonstrations at CMC (then Claremont Men’s) in support of a black studies program and a community center for black students. Mudd students were massively uninterested and this pissed of the protesters, so they called in a couple bomb threats in the middle of the night. I would like to tell you that students were expelled for such actions, but instead they got their center and studies department.

As for libraries at Mudd today … how quaint. What would they put there?

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  23. No doubt unconnected to these bomb threats, but late one Saturday night a 10-story CMC dorm building had 8 ounces of butyl mercaptan poured into its elevator lobby. Sadly, this was near the A/C intake. Hilarity ensued.

  24. Since when did adults in America decide the best way to handle a toddler throwing a massive temper tantrum was to just give in and buy the damn ball already?

  25. The Claremont Colleges are advertised as “Liberal Arts” but Harvey Mudd is science and engineering. Wake me when there is a demonstration there. Those students are studying or in the library.

Actually, I think that I gleaned from the tediously long email message (before my eyes glazed over and I had to go lie down for a while) that Pomona, Scripps, Pitzer and Mudd have previously thrown in the towel and set up all of the multicultural centers and grievance boards that the Claremont McKenna kids are demanding.

  27. JVW,

As I delve into this pony-free mess, I note that the other colleges have very limited services, which the letter-writers seem anxious to puff up into a bog deal. Perhaps they are tired, too, after writing all this, and knew that no one would care much this far down.

    Can you imagine proof-reading this?

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  28. Mudd has probably the widest diversity office of the colleges, but then it has always drawn students from around the world. I had friends there from, Pakistan, Greece, occupied Cyprus and the San Diego ghetto.

It’s almost 50% female (now), and not through AA. They just made it a very attractive place for really smart women who wanted to be engineers. They get TONS of applications from women and can be selective.

They’ve tried to attract blacks, but have said that it’s difficult as there are maybe 500 African-American students a year who would qualify, and most of them don’t want to be engineers.

But they did none of this because someone threw a hissy fit. The did it because the alumni and the companies that hire Mudders wanted it that way.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  29. there are maybe 500 African-American students a year who would qualify, and most of them don’t want to be engineers.

I know and it is sad. I get black medical students but most are either foreign born and raised or odd balls like one of my students a few years ago who played water polo in college. How many blacks play water polo ?

Great kid. He’s probably in practice by now.

I think of the phrase “you broke it, now you pay for it.”

Regrettably, too many of the “champagne socialists” in the guise of the current thing in the White House will always have the ability to, when the going gets really bad and even they can’t take it — or when they realize they can talk the talk but can’t walk the walk — they’ll casually and sneakily vote with their feet and the moving van, slip out the back door in the dead of night, leaving a a big steaming stinking pile for others to clean up.

  33. I have questions. Why would anyone draw a swastika with poop? Or, more to the point, why would anyone draw anything with poop? What would drive any thinking human being to look at his or her poop and decide to draw anything with poop?

There are only two conclusions: A mentally defective person who likes to play with poop or a SJW trying to make a non-existent point. Those choices are not mutually exclusive.

  34. I have said it here for 8 years now. They have gone…”THE FULL COMMIE”. The LEFT has exhausted every legitimate notion, theory or plan for PRACTICAL/REASONABLE GOVERNANCE. They have spent and lied, and pointed their crooked lying fingers at EVERYONE and EVERYTHING for their EPIC and ABJECT failures of POLICY. Now they’ve become FECES FLINGING MONKEYS in a RAGE.

  37. As long as people spend money with companies that back these govt. hacks, conservatives will never win. If we want to win this country back, peoples have to spend their money with companies you know are on your side. Hitting these a-holes in the pocket book is all they know. We have to bury the c. of c. if we want a conservative president. Cut your damn chord today and change America. Or continue being a c.b.

    mg (31009b)

  38. #16: Col, “There’s always going to be a 1%.” This is the beginning of wisdom. Socrates could nudge her in the right direction and pretty soon she’d be a conservative.

Alas, Socrates died about 2500 years ago, and there are few today who have both the knowledge and the patience to put up with this woman-child. In the meantime, she’s educating a lot bystanders who used to think that these student movements were cute and stimulating. I also appreciate Assistant Professor Glicks’s contribution to the discussion with her call for some muscle to chase off/enlighten a photographer. I had no idea that Journalism was a higher calling than Communications, but I can see that these two tribes are at war with each other, which is a sign of progress.

And Mudd was saddled with a Stanford administrator posing as the College’s President for a number of years, and about all I can remember of her tenure was an Oxfam Feast which was her inspiration for educating students (of privilege in today’s vernacular) in the realities of the world. More specifically, she wished to demonstrate that if the ant works his butt off and collects food for the winter, this is done at the expense of the grasshopper. More generally, her insight into the modern dilemma is that systems of government and degrees of human freedom have no bearing on the prosperity of those enmeshed in the societies that are spawned by these varied cultures. This ended my financial support for the college, except for a recent scholarship in memory of a classmate who worked his butt off for the College despite its missteps.

And speaking of Stanford, I am happy to report that the UW Womens Volleyball team defeated Stanford this evening, 23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-17. During the half-time intermission, they wanted to honor veterans, cops, firemen, and first responders. So first they asked for the veterans in the audience to stand up. I was just going to watch, but when no more than 20 stood up in a crowd of 3697, I finally stood up, so there were perhaps 21 of us. Thinking back on this, it is no surprise that Seattle has become such a cesspool. The natives are willing to clap for veterans, but matters military are terra incognita. They’re satisfied to enjoy the freedoms bought with the suffering and sacrifice of others with no consideration of why those sacrifices were required. Perhaps that’s a good thing, but a city that votes 250,000 for the Ds and 70,000 for the Rs, should probably spend a little more effort on introspection and education.

  41. I’m a member of the CMC class of 1970. It wasn’t like this back then. One of the funniest things from back then was when the Los Angeles NBC station set up a debate between to professors about Vietnam. If I recall correctly it was history prof John Rodman anti vs. Harold Rood of political science pro. When we got to the auditorium the NBC people had professionally made protest signs which they were handing out and expected us to hold up during the debate. We all raced back to the dorms and made our own signs in minutes. My roommate made one the said NBC LIES IN COLOR. Some things never change.

I’ve always wondered how the student rioters were able to manufacture such high quality signs so quickly. Things have certainly changed in the little town of Claremont.
