Happy Halloween, I Think…

Filed under: General — Dana @ 3:29 pm

[guest post by Dana]

I don’t know about where you live, but in my neck of the woods, Halloween is a community effort (and elevated art form) resulting in amazing hundred-year old Victorian homes decked out like massive pirate ships with skeletons at the helm, haunted houses with ghosts flitting across big front porches and giant spiders creeping down from rooftops, as well as cackling witches popping up from behind headstones in front yards transformed into cemeteries. In other words, it’s a fabulous night where the community turns out in all its ghoulish finery, ready for a howling good time. And because everyone seems to be having such a great time, no one much seems to care what anyone else is wearing.

But, never a group to waste an opportunity, the Social Justice Warriors have been out in full-force as they once again instruct the public about Halloween costumes and being culturally sensitive. At the top of the Costume Hall of Shame list, of course, is the Caitlyn Jenner costume, because it “marginalizes the entire transgender community. Not only does it mock a living person, but also trivializes the struggle of 0.3% of the U.S.’s adult population.”

A few more unacceptable costumes, in all their absurd glory:

Perhaps most offensive frightening of all: the sexy Donald Trump costume. Yes, it’s a thing:

Untitled-5

And just so Patterico readers don’t show up at a Halloween party wearing their Cultural Ignoramus costume, you can watch this instructive video:

Anyway, you get the picture. But you know what costume isn’t considered socially offensive and doesn’t make any list of social awfulness? Uber- ghoul Lena Dunham tells us:

Because nothing screams newsy, sexy and cool like a baby butcher. Of course, those most hurt and offended are dead and unable to voice their objections.

  1. Hello.

  2. I skipped shaving for two days and I’m wearing a white t-shirt with Sansabelt slacks to accentuate my “spare tire”. I’m going as Lena Dunham.

  3. swell, nk.
Are you going with your sister?

    mg (31009b)

  4. One year I put on a suit and tie and jumped in the shower. Then I showed up with a bottle of scotch and a steering wheel. Voila, Ted Kennedy.

  5. I just think it is interesting to see how Halloween has become as big a holiday as Christmas.

Of course, I don’t believe in conspiracy theories.

  6. It used to be a bigger thing for us when the daughter was in elementary school. The parents would put on a play for the kids, who would come to school in their costumes. I’ve been Chewbacca, the Phantom of the Opera, and a Ghostbuster. Then we’d have the cast party at my house and I’d get all the PTA moms drunk. Even now, the street is pretty lively. I’ve given away about 4 lbs. of candy so far. The Hershey “snack-size” is much more generous than Mars, BTW.

  7. Re: Planned Parenthood Costume:
You’re supposed to dress as a monster for Halloween.

  8. nk, you are cracking me up.

  9. I don’t know what your problem is with the Planned Parenthood costume, it sounds to me like a perfect one for Halloween, truly in the, er, spirit of the day. More topical than Charles Manson, anyway.

  10. Just finished 3 hours of trick or treating with an Elsa and a Daisy Duck, along with their friends Anna, Donald Duck, Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Free candy keeps their engines going even when it starts raining.

I can’t recall the last time I dressed up.

All Hallows eve (Halloween) has been a Christian celebration for a very long time. It is day 1 of a three-day observance with All saints day (Nov 1) being second, and All soul’s day being third. It has been around for so long that many scholars claim that, like Christmas, Halloween is a Christianized version of a pagan ritual.

  12. Yes, but Halloween, with costumes, trick-or-treating, and pumpkins, was unknown outside the USA as recently as 20 years ago. It’s now become universal under the influence of USAn TV.

  13. “This is our most desperate hour. Help us Marco Sleazio. You’re our only hope,” muttered the team r whorestablishment, only somewhat boozily.

“I’m gonna wash that bush right outta my hair I’m gonna wash that bush right our of my hair,” the whorestablishment sang to itself softly, and then sank onto the divan to enjoy an evening of bootlegged duggar-themed incest porn vids.

    Happy Halloween, failmerica.

  16. But, these racists are honoring native Americans by dressing up in costume and masquerading as Native Americans.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Zkn9wMyHMI8

Masquerade: a false show or pretense; to dress up
    As someone you are not…

So masquerading at Balloween would not be ok, but dishonoring Native Americans by masquerading as someone they are not at Mardi Gras is ok because….

  17. …because it’s all bulldust. Cultures are costumes, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with dressing up as someone different, including black- or white-face. Oh, and if I wanted to dress as one of the original Boston Tea Partiers, how would I do it without being “insensitive”? Or is that inherently insensitive anyway. It’s all BS. If you want to dress up as a hasid, feel free, I give you permission.

  18. Yoda, trick or treat he does not do! In the
country I live, with only one young human pup
in miles around. But if young woman in Donald
Trump costume in picture above shows up she does,
    Yoda trick and treat
    her he will!

  19. A little dark side slipped thru it did!

  20. In a place in a place and Time when the Woman of the Year has a johnson, nothing says sexy like Lena Dunham… a sow who is comfortable in her own pigskin.

    Colonel Haiku (436b69)

  21. A woman complains to her husband’s doctor: “Since that operation you performed on my husband, he has lost all interest in sex.”

“Ma’am, I am an ophthalmologist. Your husband’s operation was cataract surgery.”

  22. Good going Royals. The Mets deserve to lose. A comedy of errors.

    mg (31009b)

  23. The comments and questions the Amazon costume are pure comedy gold. The hatred and low jokes are so bad that you can’t help but laugh.

    Charles (3cf0f0)

  24. A creative type blended the two Bruce/Caitlyn costumes. The shaved right leg was a nice touch.

  26. Halloween a bust here. Maybe 10 groups on a Saturday. I guess the parents had time to plan “safe” Halloween events. Trick or treating is almost dead.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  27. I think kids should spend Halloween with their grandparents and be regaled with tales of what Gramps was doing when he was a kid in the 60’s. Hair-raising indeed.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  28. A self confessed child molester showing up as a Planned Parenthood doctor. Pretty ghoulish.

    Davod (f3a711)

  29. Dana, I told the daughter “Dana posted a picture of the sexy Donald Trump outfit” and when I showed her the post she asked “Is that Dana?”.

  30. All Hallows eve (Halloween) has been a Christian celebration for a very long time.

I know that but how many under 30 know it? Any idea ?

    Mike K (90dfdc)

  31. OT: I’ve liked this guy’s work in the past but reading the tea leaves in NYC is to my mind problematic.

One of 200 ICBMs trained on the place gets thru and its off the map for centuries.

  32. Congruence (e.g. “=”)/exclusion, pro-choice/abortion, and Planned/cannibalism? Spooky.

  33. Oh and this happened up in Berkley
    http://abc13.com/news/goodwill-store-removes-holocaust-themed-costume/1052226/

The claim is they didn’t know what the significance of this imagery meant.

    Charles (3cf0f0)

  34. Even if they had known, can someone explain what is wrong with dressing up as a concentration camp prisoner, or as a guard? They both seem to be taboo, but surely if one is bad then the other must be good, mustn’t it? If dressing up as someone is seen as mocking that person, then what’s wrong with mocking a Nazi? And if it’s seen as celebrating that person then what’s wrong with celebrating a prisoner? The operating principle seems to me that whatever you do is wrong and offensive, and earns you a lecture from the selfless and unbiased guardians of correctness.

    Milhouse (8489b1)

  35. Clearly the president found this really cute, but would he be laughing all the way to the candy if instead of the Pope, the little guy were dressed up as Mohammed?

I think we all know the answer to that.

    Dana (86e864)

  36. Lena Dunham may not realize it, but by dressing up as a Planned Parenthood Dr., she has equated that character with such notable monsters as Frankenstein, The Werewolf and the Wicked Witch of the West!
