Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:50 pm

There you have it.

  2. hmm, here a bit closer to the border with Canada, he was expected to win.
the Prem Harper was not well regarded for several reasons by several groups.
I think the upset was the amount of seats won and how one of the other parties lost a lot of their gusto.

1 PP removed from medicaid program in Texas. Depriving them of the final 2 mil of taxpayer $$

2 Austin city council puts PP lobbyists on payroll to promote funding of PP.

  7. I’m stunned. Most of my Canadian relatives, two batches of them, are rock-solid conservatives. One of them was a friend of Justin Trudeau at the university, and when Justin wound up a complete failure following his graduation, he begged to stay in a spare room at my cousin’s house, shortly after my cousin got married. They were stuck with him for a couple of years. He’s a pathetic loser, and I can’t believe he became the Liberal leader, much less won this election!

  8. It is very hard for a party to stay in power for an extended length of time. Only a particularly successful party leader can keep things going more than a couple of terms. Even after their main opposition disintegrated int the 90’s, the Liberals could only hang on for 12 years.

One of the reasons I’m pretty sanguine about the 2016 election, the only real worry is that Trump will get the nomination then throw the election.

  9. I’m unsurprised that Harper lost; i’m surprised that the NDP did so poorly — just a few weeks ago they were leading in the polls!

  10. Also, it’s really baffling to me that this is viewed as a surprising result. Threehundredeight – the Canadian equivalent of fivethirtyeight – viewed this as the most likely outcome. http://www.threehundredeight.com/

    aphrael (4eae3a)

  11. Er: correction, they seemed to view a Liberal minority as the most likely outcome. Even so.

  13. Just a reminder that Justin’s father Pierre, viewed WW2 as unjust. That Mao and Soviet style politics were misunderstood in the west and the ideas just needed to be tried by the right people who were enlightened. Oh and lets not talk of the Quebec fines where you have to appeal and appease to a minority of speakers by having French language first in the city (and province) and smaller English translation under it. Even if you aren’t French Quebec descent. Fines that are in the thousands, oh and the secret language police that go around fining business for this infraction. Finally, the legacy of Pierre was the Canadian constitution which mandates unionism but not free association. In that you can join a union if you want but denial of the right to not join a union as well. That isn’t very feee.

  15. I’m sure there are complex political and social reasons for this result, but Canadians have always loved the Trudeaus. They are political celebrities like the Kennedys in America.

  16. Most conservatives were not surprised that Harper lost but that Trudeau’s win was so large. This Justin Trudeau spent most of his life in school, never held a real job and I believe was convinced by liberals to go into politics to get him off the streets. Ok, maybe not the streets part. Anyway, he rode his fathers name (and a lot of liberal cash) into a parliament seat and he did it with half his fathers intellect. Really, young Mr. Trudeau is not a bright man certainly unprepared for governing and I suspect within a year will want to get out but his Liberal advisers will ensure they stay in power, er I guess that should read that HE stay in power. All in all the biggest reason were that the media all attacked Harper and deified Trudeau and Canadians of the new generations having their hands out for free stuff saw more of a chance with Trudeau then with Harper and finally the majority of Canadians switch their vote back and forth between the Liberals and the NDP and never vote Conservative. The key is getting the right balance and Harper managed to do it through 4 elections and ten years.

  17. A very Troilic family. When Margaret’s infidelities became too blatant for the media to ignore, there were bumper stickers that said “Honk if you’ve slept with Maggie”. Geraldo Rivera wrote that he did. In a canoe. But I don’t think it was standing up — only that would have it made it unusual for Maggie.

  20. People want what they want. And mostly they want a free ride, and they want to hear they can get it at no cost.

We are, I am afraid, on the cusp of electing a woman who never did jack s**t except get an M.R.S. degree and marry Billy Jeff. Which I suppose is a fitting fate for a country that elected and reelected a man who wrote two autobiographies before he accomplished jack s**t (I doubt he wrote them; are we supposed to believe a man who is supposedly so intelligent the presidency bores him to death had the discipline to sit down and write books).

    I know it’s a small thing but:

    https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/remarks-president-cairo-university-6-04-09

…it was innovation in Muslim communities that developed the order of algebra; our magnetic compass and tools of navigation; our mastery of pens and printing; our understanding of how disease spreads and how it can be healed. Islamic culture has given us majestic arches and soaring spires…

There was zero, zip, nada Muslim innovation involved in any of this.

The Obama’s seem to like to vacation in Spain. Perhaps they can wander over to Segovia and see the aquaducts the Romans managed to build in 50 BC without Islamic “innovation.”

I don’t think Obama is nearly as smart as he’s made out to be. But he’s smart enough. He knows that he’s full of s**t. But his sycophantic worshipers will eat up his obvious BS and beg for more.

I can’t spew this BS, which means I can rank no higher than O-5.

    Steve57 (9b30eb)

  21. I bet that Obama shows up at the inauguration.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  22. Naturally the politi(cized) fact checkers rated Obama’s BS as TRUE!

He didn’t use the word “invented.” He didn’t say Muslims had “invented” the arch. Which I thought was awfully big of him considering the Babylonians were building arches since I don’t know how many millennia before Mohammed’s dad developed a passion for Mohammed’s mom.

The people who are destroying the Buddhas of Bamiyan gave us something? The Taliban and Boko Haram and the Islamic State (note how the people Obama wants to credit for preserving the library of Alexandria are treating Palmyra) are to be credited for modernity?

I p**s on the very idea.

    CrustyB (69f730)

  24. CrustyB @23, I hope you realize you’ve sparked a conversation on the left about what part of Obama’s anatomy tastes dreamier.

    You do know that, right?

    Steve57 (9b30eb)

  25. O/T, I’m sitting in Mission Planning and I look up at the Pilot Landing Aid Television (PLAT) and I’m thinking “Why is that Corsair in burner?”

In a nanosecond it dawns on me, A-7s don’t have afterburners.

It turns out the guy had caught the wire at such a high angle that he slammed his plane onto the deck, driving pieces of the front gear into the intake, and what I mistook as afterburner was the jet destroying itself.

The thing is, I was watching it on TV. He walked away from it.

    Who am I to criticize?

    Steve57 (9b30eb)

  26. Thus proving that all a liberal has to do to win on the North American continent is stay hundreds of miles away from Obama. Hillary and the rest are surely taking notes… as well as drawing up security plans to keep him locked out.

  27. Canada’s middle class now has a higher per capita income than the United States. The Heritage Foundation ranks Canada higher than the U.S. on the index of economic freedom. Their total state debt stands at 86% of GDP, compared to our 103%.

From what I understand, Trudeau’s election platform is to increase taxes and run deficits in order to “stimulate” the economy. It would appear that Canada aspires to U.S. levels of economic mediocrity. Coupled with the defeat of Tony Abbot in Australia last month and our own Democrat party openly embracing socialism, it appears that the Anglosphere is drifting inexorably to the left.

BTW… is this guy the lovechild of Margaret Trudeau and Mick Jagger?

    Colonel Haiku (8fd90b)

  29. JVW – two months ago the polls showed the NDP, which is much more left-wing than the Liberals, winning the election. Their loss, and the Liberals victory, makes it seem less like inexorable leftward drift and more like exhaustion with a nine year old government.
