Labour Goes Hard Left

In an outcome that was nearly unthinkable just eight weeks ago, Jeremy Corbyn, Member of Parliament from Islington North, has become the head of Britain’s Labour Party and the Leader of Her Majesty’s Most Loyal Opposition. Mr. Corbyn’s agenda includes ending austerity such as it is in Britain, fighting attempts to reform welfare (as Mark Steyn likes to remind us, about one in ten adult Britons has not done a day of work since Tony Blair took office eighteen years ago, and one in five children are being raised in a home where no adult is employed), apologizing for Labour’s (i.e., Blair’s) support of the Iraq War, pushing Britain to admit more refugees from the war-torn Middle East (on the grounds that the war is Britain’s fault), and delegitimizing Israel and forcing it to accede to the demands of a fanatical group that wants to destroy the Jewish state. He would possibly support removing Britain from the EU (yay!), but would definitely support her leaving NATO (boo!). Whereas Bernie Sanders is trying to get America to at least wade into the shallow end of socialism, Corbyn would no doubt feel right at home at a Code Pink rally or a faculty meeting of the Sociology Department at Columbia or Brown. First up for Corbyn will be to build his shadow cabinet, as the more moderate holdovers from Ed Miliband’s leadership appear to be resigning en masse. Once that is done, it will be quite interesting to see if Corbyn can unite and revive the British left, or if he just oversees its fracturing into regional parties and a mass exodus of members to the Liberal Party. Can the falcon hear the falconer?

Actually, for demographic and socio-cultural reasons, I think Mexico is a better glimpse into our future. IOW, Euro-sclerotic Europe, including the UK, has a tendency of being not much less foolishly liberal than a Central or South American society — or a typical entrenched-true-blue urban American area — but the extra baggage of Third-World idiosyncrasies (perhaps a bit worse than the quirks of Islamo-ization) will add another dimension to the US as we enter the latter half of the 21st century.

Spent the day at Ypres today and there are thousands of British who visit the war dead memorials and cemeteries all the time. My guess is that most do not vote Labour and may do so less endless as Corbyn talks about giving the Falklands away.

The people of that nation were able to experience for several years the debacle brought upon them by Hugo Chavez, but they doubled down on stupid and voted for his successor not all that long ago.
When a society becomes increasingly socialistic and liberal, the only thing left for it to hang onto — as a safety vest — is the characteristics of its population. Or whether enough people in such places are intrinsically stable, skilled and reliable. But much of humanity isn’t made up of that, referring to a rare confluence of dumb politics but uncommon demographics (eg, the limousine-liberal enclaves of the SF Bay area, New York City or a Scandinavian nation).

Hoagie, actually I didn’t want my own comments to be too focused on the demographics of a society based on race or ethnicity as much as based on politics or ideology. Hence, my comment about the city of Detroit, either as what it currently is (and, no, not predominately black as much as predominately liberal or leftwing), compared with what it would be like if it were suddenly (no, not predominantly white) predominantly conservative or rightwing, or even truly centrist.
The innate ideological biases of humans and societies don’t receive enough attention as far as I’m concerned, in which too many people — particularly among the cocktail-circuit crowd in places like NYC or DC — tend to say, “shhh, don’t talk about his (or her or their political) orientation! That’s rude, intrusive or overly personal!!”

I get where you are coming from, brother in Christ, and your points are well taken, even your point about the Pope, because The Catholic church promotes what I call “familial socialism.” This is (I believe) the socialism that is foundational to every functioning family. Beginning with the covenant between a man and a woman, to the procreation of children, the caring and rearing of children, to the education and and orientation of children for the common good of society. But this kind of socialism frees individuals to take their places as adults instead of enslaving them by rendering them dependent children for the rest of their lives. The Church has always said that the family is the Domestic Church. So when the Pope encourages the faithful to engage in what are easily identified as acts of socialism, he is encouraging individuals to take action in their respective domestic churches. Yes, he also urges these actions on a larger scale because we live in a larger world. But the Pope is the shepherd of many souls, but the master of none.
However, and True socialists will never forget this, Socialism is the enemy of the Church. So when the Pope is perceived to spew “socialist” ideas, the True Socialists pounce on the chance to twist his words to further their agenda, hoping to pick off not a few weak minds as collateral damage.
The Church has seen many attempts, both without and within, to hijack the faithful for a worldly agenda. The Church has seen the birth of many regimes and has presided over the funerals of of all of those that have broken on the shield of the Holy Spirit. The Church will bury this newest onslaught against the faithful. Jesus promised us that the gates of hell will never prevail against His church. You and I both pray right alongside Jesus that we may be One as he and the Father are One, so that we may all be One together. Here’s to the unity of all Christians. Amen.

Father Coughlin was immensely popular until he began to openly support the Nazis. The Holocaust made antisemitism verboten. It is probably no coincidence that it is returning now that the last survivors of that era are dying off. (Anyone born in 1945 would now be 69 or 70…add five or ten years to be old enough to have coherent memories of that time.)

I believe you are confusing “socialism” with Socialism” the same way people confuse “catholic” with “Catholic.”
A covenant is not a dictatorship. A man has his place in the Lord’s plan just as a woman has her place in the Lord’s plan. Anyone who believes that the fundamental role and responsibilities that go with that role are somehow beneath the “dignity” of either the man or woman are listening to the father of lies.
Likewise children are very much a part of the Lord’s plan. If you are a family man then you are well aware that a father is engaged in socialism with respect to his family. Or are you in denial? The parents (as dictators) get tp lay down all the rules, own the means of production, centrally plan everything. Sound familiar? When parents do this, it is “good.” When governments do this it is catastrophic. I believe you and I are separated by a common language where the same words having different meanings. Especially when you take into account that one of the central ideas in the Bible is that of “Covenant;” foremost between God and His people. Is God a dictator? That error on my part completely changed my understanding of what you were trying to convey and it was completely on my part. I just returned from my one outing per week for dinner with my wife ( I’m hooked up to oxygen in a lengthily process of tests awaiting a lung volume reduction surgery) and when I can actually get out of the house any more I go, go, go! There is no way our labor market can survive tat ay entering the lowest level at once. We just don’t need that many entrance level workers when combined with our own.
