Shootings At Two Military Facilities in Tennessee, Four Marines Killed

Filed under: General — Dana @ 1:22 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Four Marines have been killed in an attack on two separate military facilities in Tennessee. A Marine recruiter and police officer were also injured in the attack. The gunman was killed.

The shooting incident began on the U.S. Naval Recruiting on Lee Highway in Chattanooga ended at the U.S. Naval Reserve Center on Amincola Highway Thursday morning about 11am.

The gunman’s name was not immediately released, and authorities offered no immediate information on a motive. Bill Killian, the top federal prosecutor for eastern Tennessee, said the attack was being investigated as an act of domestic terrorism.

The shootings happened about 40 minutes and six miles apart, first at a military recruitment station and then at a Navy and Marines reserve center. A defense official said the gunman used an automatic weapon.

Authorities said they had no reason to believe anyone else was involved in the shooting. They also said there was no intelligence indicating the attack ahead of time. Several defense officials said there was still change in alert status for U.S. military installations.

  19. According to this report by U.S. Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, is chairman of the House Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade, there are two reasons argued against the government shutdown of terrorist twitter accounts:

“The first — and easiest to set aside — is the claim that if the U.S. government were to shut down terrorists’ social media accounts, these measures would be violating terrorists’ free speech rights.

My own belief is that the Constitution does not apply to terrorists.

These thugs gave up their right to free speech the first time they killed innocent civilians. We should certainly not be helping them kill more. But this isn’t just my thinking.

The Supreme Court has already held this to be the case in Holder v. Humanitarian Law Project, when it ruled that if someone has aided a terrorist organization, their free speech rights were not protected. Indeed, free speech does not apply when it harms others, such as creating and distributing child pornography.

The second argument is that terrorists’ use of social media provides the intelligence community with information that they would not otherwise be able to acquire. But while terrorists may slip up from time to time, they are also aware that by its very nature, social media is about sharing, which means what they say can easily become widely shared.

Nor is terrorist use of social media a new phenomenon. We have had years to weigh the kind of intelligence that we can gather about terrorist groups against the advantages in messaging and recruitment that terrorists gain from it. And from what I have heard, allowing this public, online jihad to continue has provided no significant intelligence breakthroughs. The fact that there are more terrorists using social media than ever before should say all we need to know about whether they are benefiting from it.”

He concludes: “In 2011, the White House promised a strategy to prevent online radicalization. But more than three years later — and despite a summit last week aimed at tackling extremism — we are still waiting on a that strategy. Without one, the federal government’s efforts to combat terrorist use of social media will be as haphazard and lackluster as the efforts of private social media companies. Instead, we need a strategy that clearly articulates our goals and roles, and the responsibilities of each federal agency that needs to be involved, as well as how we are going to work with civil society. “

  20. Why does “ISIS” get a Twitter account? That doesn’t make sense. Bad Twitter.

It’s probably in our interest to let ISIS have a Twitter account. Perhaps they will get sloppy and provide us some tips on where their operatives are. It looks from the screenshot like some people retweeted the ISIS tweet. We might want to be learning more about who they were and perhaps scheduling a drone visit their way.

  24. Historically, one objection to arming military members is because we want to avoid even the military could to be used domestically in violation of the Posse Comitatus Act. But the reality is our military is a target of terrorists, and we are preventing them from protecting themselves and us. They should at least have the same ability to protect themselves as any other target, like the White House and the Capitol, so either provide armed guards at every military location or let them carry their own.

    DRJ (1dff03)

  34. As I am bracing myself for the inevitable lecture about how this has nothing to do with Islam. That Islam is a religion of peace, and that Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez is twisting it out of all recognition.

And possibly a replay of what Prom Queen clearly thinks is a masterstroke of insight and logic. Just like ISIS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez is not a cleric.

So a stray thought occurred to me. He just concluded a nuclear deal with the Mullahs in Iran. Who are clerics; the leading clerics in twelver Shiism, the largest contingent in Shia Islam.

And these clerics lead chants of “death to America” and “death to Israel” just as enthusiastically as any other Muslims. Because as the leading state sponsor of terrorism in the world, who put bounties on the heads of US servicemen, and who have killed more US citizens than any other terror group, they have concluded the same thing about what Islam requires.

So I’m curious if at any point Imams Kerry and Obama told them they’re hijacking a great religion of peace, that they just don’t understand their own religion, and they’re just doing it wrong?

Our Defense Department may not survive Barack Obama in any great shape to fight due to budget cuts.

But thanks to Obama, the elite terrorist arm of the Tehran clerics’ Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Quds force, will get a massive budget increase.

And no one will, mg. There are no “moderate” moslems. That was a term made up by our politically correct government and media so as not to paint The Religion of Peace in a negative light. There is no room for religious moderation in Islam, period. There are terrorists and terrorist enablers. Just like the people who allowed the nazi’s to take over and murder millions, those who the left call moderates are just enablers by another name. Exatly whose side do you think they’d be on in a religious war? The Christians and Jews of the USA, the secular goverment of the USA or Islam?

Exactly why we (the government) allows enemies of the United States to immigrate here is beyond me. Moslems have absolutely nothing in common with the republic, society, culture, history or traditions of the United States. So what the hell are they doing here? Why would they want to be among non-bekievers? Why would religious fascists want to live under a Constitutional republic? Because they are Islams 5th column. They’re no better than nazi’s hiding behind a thin vail of religion which is only bought into by weak-kneed leftists like Obummer and Pajama Boy. #WeAreAllTargets.

(Almost irrelevant: in the 1960s, to bring a personal firearm onto base you had to check it in at the gate, who would record make, model, serial number and your ID. When you left with it, through the same gate, the firearm was checked against the recorded checkins, and you were allowed to go on your way, with the sheet if you wanted. If you didn’t want, that you’d left with it was recorded, and the sheet filed so when you next brought it, you didn’t have to fill in all of that, just the new entry date was recorded.)

  60. Tradionally, enlisted troops are only armed when under command. This has more to do with worrying about some private taking exception to the sergeants assignments to KP than any worry about civilians, but I’m also sure that this is a small factor. The other issue is that the military is definitely a “one size fits all” organization. Worry about some testosterone-loaded 19 year old with a bellyful of beer and a gun? Solution: nobody gets one.

What’s needed is a simple formula for who carries – for instance: senior NCO and any officer on duty in a recruiting office is authorized to be under arms. E6 and greater with >6 years in service are authorized CC if the have CC permit from state of residency when in civilian clothes or non-dress uniform.

OTOH, this is the Army (Marines, Navy, etc) so I don’t hold out much hope for something that sensible.

    Transcript:

We generally do not have military with guns walking around, uh, domestic streets or shopping malls, as we’ve seen. And so that’s why they’re unarmed. If he did, he’d probably start the conversation talking about how wonderful it was that the ESPN Awards gave a “courage” award to Bruce “Caitlyn” Jenner, or something like that. Or in the grand tradition of 5 years ago.

nbcconnecticut.com, October 6, 2010: After news broke out of the shooting at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas, the nation watched in horror as the toll of dead and injured climbed. The White House was notified immediately and by late afternoon, word went out that the president would speak about the incident prior to a previously scheduled appearance. At about 5 p.m., cable stations went to the president. The situation called for not only his trademark eloquence, but also grace and perspective.

But instead of a somber chief executive offering reassuring words and expressions of sympathy and compassion, viewers saw a wildly disconnected and inappropriately light president making introductory remarks. At the event, a Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Indian affairs, the president thanked various staffers and offered a “shout-out” to “Dr. Joe Medicine Crow — that Congressional Medal of Honor winner.” Three minutes in, the president spoke about the shooting, in measured and appropriate terms.
